Subject: RS: Want to be RAKed or RAK others?
It is the greatest feeling to get a RAK card. And also it is a good
learning tool for the beginning stamper. If you have never been RAKed,
email me your snail mail address and I'll add you to the list. If you would
like to RAK others, email me and I'll forward you the list. A RAK is a
Random Act of Kindness. When you send a RAK card you are expecting nothing
in return, just the warm fuzzy feeling you get from cheering someone else up.

From: lingama@ozonline.com.au (J & A Lingam)
Subject: RS: SST received: Jessica Lingam
On Friday I received the February package from my SST. It was a great start
to a rubberstamping filled weekend (I went to the RDU convention over the
weekend and I'll send a report to the list later).
I just want to say a big Thank You to my SST - you sure know how to spoil me
<BG> The package you sent me was way above and beyond the call of duty!
Everybody will be so jealous ;)
First of all I received 2 stamps, one of a German Shepherd and a small
abstract pattern stamp. I have a really soft spot for German Shepherds
because we used to own three of them when I was young so that stamp is
really special to me. And I can't get enough of pattern stamps because I
love making my own background papers, so this pattern stamp will definitely
come in very handy.
Next I received an uninked felt ink pad. This is just great because I
really like making my own rainbow ink pads but the last time I tried to do
so, I used foam pads for my dye reinkers which didn't work too well. Now I
can make myself another rainbow pad which should work much better :)
I also received a circle cutter - what a great idea! Now I can cut out
perfect circles instead of wobbly ones! I'm going to try this out when I
start on my memory album pages and use it for cutting out frames for my
photos. And to help me remember events so I can journal them in my memory
album, my SST sent me a small notebook and also stickers (Aussie Christmas
theme) to accent my memory album pages.
But wait, there's more! My SST sent me a packet of satin ribbon bows, a
packet of animal confetti and a packet of foam shapes for making abstracts
or pictures. My SST made me a flower card which was made from the foam
shapes - that is just so cool! Last but not the least, my SST gave me
chocolates - Whitman's Sampler which I just love:D I have to add that
everything was wrapped in light blue and violet tissue and the whole box was
covered in little punched out bows - it must have taken ages to glue all
those little paper punches on the box!
SST, I can't say Thank You enough and I can't wait to find out who you are.
I hope your SST really spoils you too :)

Subject: RS: ORLANDO tornados
Thanks Terri for sending the call out. Our family is all accounted for
and alright. It was THE most wicked night of storms since we moved
here!!!
I haven't heard from Nana Bev or Nancy Green, yet. I know both of their
areas were hit, too!!
The news is saying there were more than 43 tornados. 27 confirmed dead
and some missing. My dau and I sat up all night so we (hpoefully) would
have time to move the boys and DH into the laundry room for safety, if
necessary. We are exhausted!!
The county thaat Nancy Green is in, all the schools are closed and the
news said most of the roads, too. I hope she is ok.
EVERYONE IN THIS AREA PLEASE CHECK IN!!
Hugs,
Maralee

From: Phil Schloss <phil@red-castle.com>
Subject: RS: Abbreviations in email--and all the other junk also.
Has anyone thought about just using the words instead of
the abbreviations. The more abbreviations the harder it
is to read. I think it is funny that people use abbreviations
to reduce the size of messages and then send them in html or
add a graphic that is many times the size of the orginal
message.
I don't want to have to have my secret decoder dictionary
in order to read a message. I find that with 700+ messages
a day, if it is not VERY EASY to read it is gone.
If you run a program that tells you the clarity of your
message against a message with a lot of abbreviations, it
will come out very poorly. The idea of email (any communication)
is to get your idea across to another person (thing) with the
least effort. In the case of a email group where there are
500+ people trying to read it with at least 5 or 6 differnt
operating systems and likely 30 or 40 different email readers,
it would seem to me that if the writer spends a second to not
use an abbreviation, than the 500+ readers will save many times
that when they read it.
The same is true of the fancy colors, font sizes, font types and
attached graphics, they may look nice to the sender but unless
you have tested them with how they look on all of the different
systems and email reading programs, your message is likely being
dumped unread by a lot of people. Many people have their email set
to not processe and email with an attachment. Others if your
email is not plain text and easy to read will just filter all
of your messages to the trash. Or if they don't like your posts
they may also do that, like an order I received a while back,
the person said she had not seen my orginal post, that a friend
of hers had forwarded it to her. She filtered all of my messages
to trash because of my comments on copyright.
So you can see, if you want it read keep it simple.

If you're playing, get these in the mail tomorrow! Due by the 23rd!
Okay players, here's the scoop:
* Each player should send me 7-10 CUTE UNMOUNTED stamps. Sayings are
okay as long as they are not strange, remember this is cute stuff.
I have enough for two groups. Each bag will be sent to it's group and
each person in the group will get a turn to see, take and add stamps.
* Each player must put the bag in the mail no later that 48 hours after
they get it. Get it on Monday, in the mail no later than Wednesday.
* Each player may take as many as they like and must place back in the
bag as many as they take. Remember to try to replace large with large
and small with small.
Cute only, please. When the bags have gone through all the groups, I
will divy up the remainders and send each player a packet of stamps to
close the round robin.
I still have some room for more players if there is anyone out there who
wants to play.
Send UMs to me by Feb 23, and I'll get them bagged and back out to you by

Subject: Re: RS: Stamping under glass
I, too, have tried this. Although I did not see the Effie video. Instead I
had Besy Ritter as a teacher. She opened up her stained glass studio to our
stamp club for a night. We went there and did this. Although a little
differently. Fist we stamped and colored images. I did most of mine with
watercolor pencils. then we went and chose pretty colored and textured glass,
which her glass partner Bill cut to the right size for our pictures. Then he
also cut a piece of clear glass the same size. Betsy then took each piece of
glass separately and foiled them with the copper stuff, which we then smoothed
with this roller thingy. The next step was to sandwich our picture between
the colored and clear glass. Then the whole thing was foiled again. They
came out terrific. The colored glass adds a lot to the piece!I used a couple
of the pieces I made for Christmas gifts. It was a lot of fun! I hope to go
back there again sometime.

<<I watched the Effie Glitzfinger video's and saw a bunch of things I
wanted to try. What I tried yesterday was stamping under glass.
I went to a frame shop and asked them to cut me a bunch of 2 inch
squares of glass. I got a good deal. They took an 8x10 piece of glass
and cut it up for me for $5.
I bought some copper foil tape from the Make an Impression, here in
Issaquah.
Then I made a computer generated saying (duplicated about 15 times) and
stamped my image right above it. Then colored, embossed, added AIG.
Then mounted it on a nice background paper.
Holding the paper and the glass tightly together, I applied the copper
tape. Burnished it with a plastic picnic knife. Added a magnet on the
back.
I'm very happy with the result.
Some of the people in my Same Swap are going to get these. I hope you
like them! The ones at the end look a lot better than the ones in the
beginning. This is definately a practice makes perfect technique.+>>

HI all - I heard from several with the following request
"Marcia, is there any chance of getting you to post the addy and phone
number for Northwoods? I've heard so many good things about them. And
can you tell me what kind of images they have?
Yep, we want a review!"
Northwoods
841 Eagle Ridge lane
Stillwater, MN 55082
Catalog is $13.00 but well worth the steep price.
This catalog is 190 pages. It is B&W on a heavy quality paper. the
contents are in the following sections: Scrap Booking, Scenery, Special
occasions, floral, nature, then all the holidays.
What I love in this catalog is the nature scenes. There are beautiful
full size typically nothern scenes like "Mallards in Marsh, Grindstone
Creek, the Cabin, Country Road, Nothern Pines, Leaning Pines, Nothern
Stream,Peaceful river, After the Strom, Forest Friends, Winter Road"
etc etc. Each of these is a drawing of that scene which is peaceful and
heart warming. The amimals, flowers, and single scene stamps like trees
are also the same sketch style drawing that is very artistic and very
well done.
This is not a cute catalog. so if that is your style skip it. Nor is
it wierd. The images are beautiful, realistic, and artistic. Many
sayings and images are Christian and very tasteful.
And there is a great violet.

Eileen, for JUNO users, the secret to seeing whether a message is just
for you or for the whole list is to turn on your mail headers look at
the TO slot. If it is directly to you and not to the list, it won't
show the list as a recipient. If it is coming to you through the list,
the list will be shown. Go to the OPTIONS drop down menu, look about
2/3 of the way down, and you will see SHOW MAIL HEADERS.
For AOLers, look at the mail header info at the bottom of the message;
the same info will be shown.

From: lingama@ozonline.com.au (J & A Lingam)
Subject: RS: Melbourne RDU convention report (very long)
I attended Melbourne's first rubberstamping convention over the weekend and
being my first convention, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. But suffice
to say that I had a great time.
I only made about 40 pins to trade and I couldn't believe that there were
people there who made over 150 pins. People were trading pins everywhere
and pins covered shirts, scarves, bags - my husband commented that I looked
like I had been attacked by a swarm of strange insects because my shirt was
all covered in pins!
I think there were about 30 companies represented at the convention, and it
was great to be able to see all the different stamps available. They
weren't all just US stamps...we now have a really good range of Australian
made stamps too. It was really pleasing to see that the quality of the
Aussie stamps were as good as those from overseas and competitively priced
too.
There are so many good Australian stamp companies that it's hard to single
out any of them. But I was especially impressed by Stamp It's Australiana
images - great details with wonderful Aboriginal designs and bushmen images.
Inky Pinky has just come out with their own range of stamps and they are
beautiful. Their Australian animal images are really detailed like Magenta
stamps. And I had been waiting for the convention so I could buy the great
bush hut stamps from Inkums Dinkums own Australian collection. They look
like watercolour sketches and would be perfect to use with watercolour
techniques. But as I said, the range of Australian stamps available was
incredible, ranging from whimsical to cute to elegant. The Australian
rubber stamping industry is really growing and this is great news for us
Aussie stampers because we now have more choices.
There were free demos throughout the whole two days of the convention as
well as hands on demos and workshops. We had a few international guests and
well known Australian rubber stamp artists conducting classes and demos. I
had an opportunity to take a hands on demo with Maryse Carrier, designer and
demonstrator for Magenta stamps. She came all the way out from Canada and
showed us some wonderful Magenta magic. I couldn't believe how in just 20
minutes, I could make a stunning card using her techniques - it really is
magic! I also took a two hour workshop with Karen Johnson of All Night
Media who showed us the latest tips and techniques from the US, including
stamping on velvet, stamping on modelling clay to make jewellery and the
latest thing to hit Australian shores, scrapbooking. Karen makes the most
unique jewellery and photo frames incorporating stamped images and her work
was recently featured in the Artistry in Action page in Somerset Studio.
Leigh Edwards from Limited Edition was there, showing us all the fun things
to do with their really unique range of stamps (like mini scrapbooks and
peek a boo stamps). Ellen Eadie was there and so was Jo Mansell, one of
Australia's well-known mail art artist. I also met Julie van Oosten, the
editor of TRG who is really nice (and I found out that her mum was from
Penang, where I was born!). And I met fellow listees and their friends
including Helen aka Daisy (who managed to talk her friends Christine and Di
into coming down from Sydney to attend the RDU), Belinda aka Roxy, Berni
(who is in the SST and came all the way from Qld), Susan Uncle and her mum
Grace (who is known to quite a few Aussie stampers on the list because she
has hosted several swaps). Do you remember Colleen, Susan's niece, who
hosted the recent Horse Swap? Well, I met her and she is only 13! Cyndi,
who is Colleen's younger sister (age 9) will be hosting a swap aoon. Isn't
it great that these young stampers are really getting into swaps.
There were so many great people to meet at the RDU (and everyone is so
friendly), so many stamps to buy (BG) and so many things to learn - I had a
ball.
Sorry this is really long. I guess I just wanted to share with you
everything I experienced at the convention. The next convention will be
held in Brisbane and all you Queenslanders who couldn't make it down to
Melbourne should really attend next year. You will love it!
Regards from a very tired (and broke) convention attendee,
Jessica
