Oh, come on, the Southern accents were s'posed to be fake! Still, Shiri and Emilie both did a horrible job trying to sound Southern. However, I felt Majandra did a very entertaining fake Southern accent--who cares if it was obviously not real? It was still cool. Now I have heard Katherine pull off a fake Southern accent before (as Miranda Prosper in "The Tempest"), but she didn't even attempt one in the episode, which was disappointing. Another thing--why were only the chicks Southern? And did Nick even speak? I mean, he hauled Majandra off the crash site, and he showed up in Katherine's place, but did he say anything? Oh, well, it was less psychologically damaging than "Surprise," so that makes me like it. Next week looks really bad, though! Max comes back from the future, and he's a scrub--yuck! I don't like scrubby Max; I like short hair, clean-shaven Max. Anyway, that's it from this girl. Later days.

  123. Thanks to Mike's kindness, I have been able to watch the first episode of
  124. Series 2, so what follows is my impression, partly a response to some of
  125. the things you've been saying on the list.
  126.  
  127. The plot's predictably 'this is what we did last season', but they've
  128. changed the 'look' of the place a lot, giving it a modern shopping centre.
  129. Although I can understand them wanting to revise the 'look and feel' a bit,
  130. I wonder if the grim style isn't throwing at least one of the baby's limbs
  131. out with the bath water. In the first season, I felt as though these people
  132. were empathatic personalities, people I would like to have been friends
  133. with at that age - and the 'story' one I would have enjoyed being a
  134. participant in. Now the dry presentation makes them much more distant, more
  135. like people 'over there' and less attractive (despite what I'll say below
  136. about bodies); the 'identification' has been diminished, and for me, that's
  137. a loss.

  139. Contrary to the impression I'd got from some list comments, you have to
  140. wait right to the end to see JB take his shirt off, but once he does . . .
  141. I can't imagine why JB's effort (he must work *so* hard at that) was wasted
  142. last season! Brendan's hair has grown and he's obviously been working out,
  143. so now he looks like a chubby dweeb instead of a scrawny one. Isn't it
  144. lucky we've all got different taste? Mahjendra's (Maria's) hair has
  145. miraculously extended, and that contributes to an ageing process that makes
  146. her look like Marilyn Monroe pretending to be a school girl - absolutely
  147. sexy adult, no hint of childish innocence at all. Even Shiri, the first
  148. time we see her, looks very grown up with her hair not tied back, though
  149. she reverted to 'little school girl' more completely than anyone else -
  150. making her look (I thought) out of place, especially when she talks to Max
  151. about their relationship's sexual content. The characters seem to be
  152. schizoid about their age, both young *and* old - not convincing, for me.
  153.  
  154. All the characters talk about having sex with each other (wanting to) in a
  155. pragmatic, adult way, not the yearning babyish way of Series 1 that was
  156. quite appealing - there's one particular encounter in the Crashdown cafe
  157. between Maria and Michael, where he's pulling slices off a pizza, and she's
  158. asking him if they can have sex please. He dismisses her fairly brutally -
  159. more character building stuff to differentiate him from 'Max' - but it jars
  160. when you hear that they're all going to pretend to go back to school in the
  161. next episode, and this is their 'end of holiday' party! There's an
  162. unresolved conflict, I think, between the original pitch of the programme
  163. as an 'isn't it weird and difficult to be a teenager' programme about
  164. emotions with a bit of sci-fi thrown in to make a good metaphorical
  165. structure for the arguments, and what's beginning here (if I'm reading the
  166. signals right): a harder-edged sci-fi programme (more like First Wave's
  167. second series - they made a similar shift with that, I think) that's got a
  168. team of characters who have back-stories that don't fit the new roles
  169. they're going to play. These characters need to be out of school, young
  170. adults, not kids - though my feeling about that is partly just a reaction
  171. to the way all the actors look now, all much more grown up than last year
  172. (except Brendan and Colin).
  173.  
  174. There was one strand that unsettled me badly, and which - if it turns out
  175. to be one of the themes they want to explore - might scupper the series as
  176. one that can be sold into the British market. Nasedo (the shape-shifter) is
  177. written out in this first episode (he dies at the end) and his removal as a
  178. potential 'older, wiser' consultant figure is handled in a very strange
  179. way. There's a cross [angry] 'telephone call' he has with Michael, who is
  180. told that he mustn't be phoned about things with Max being consulted first;
  181. then there's a scene in which Max is repeatedly described as 'leader' of
  182. 'the royal family' of four aliens; Max is criticised for not leading
  183. adequately, all just in words, without there being any real substance to
  184. the thread at this stage because we haven't seen anything to substantiate
  185. it yet.

  187. I think British audiences will *hate* the idea of Max being 'King' of a
  188. group of teenagers who (we're reminded) are meant to be living out
  189. 'ordinary' problems for us to identify with, even if they're all embodied
  190. in *ex*traordinary metaphors. It felt as though the people who set up (and
  191. succeeded so well) with last year's programmes have been bullied into
  192. accepting new ideas, new threads, and a new style (the change in look,
  193. darker, moodier, far more urban) have fought a rearguard action to preserve
  194. bits of last year's good stuff. The conflicts felt thoroughly unresolved to
  195. me. I can't wait to watch more episodes, but I'm unhappy with the prospect
  196. of the series getting into a big study of the power structure within the
  197. group of four, instead of focusing on how they relate as equals and
  198. unequals to their 'ordinary' human contemporaries. It seems to me that
  199. where the latter is a 'universal', interesting to everyone because we all
  200. have that difficulty (relating our sense of who we are to the nightmare of
  201. what we dread other people think about us), worrying about power
  202. relationships is a very thin issue, something that'll only be interesting
  203. to a few who happen to have a problem with it.
  204.  
  205. I loved the physical artefacts signalling 'skins', but wondered about the
  206. way they were introduced - this was *not* narrative clarity, or narrative
  207. mystery - it was just a bit clumsy, and a neat way of introducing a new
  208. sci-fi idea while killing off Nasedo. Both scenes with skins left me
  209. feeling as though a chunk of explanatory script that I needed to hear had
  210. been left on the cutting room floor.

  212. I'll be very interested to hear what you have to say about these responses
  213. - - I hope that the fact they're coming a few weeks after you've seen the
  214. episodes won't make them feel irrelevant or out-of-date.

  259. Interesting posts everyone, and hope you don't mind me going off-topic a bit
  260. and asking if anyone else has also been receiving very delinquent mail? I
  261. thought it was just my own ISP, but I'm still getting Roswell messages
  262. rolling in from earlier this month...

  264. Anyway, I think some minor criticism is understandable; a part of what made
  265. Roswell "Roswell" seems to have been sold out, to make way for more sci-fi.
  266. Realistically, I think the show is doing whatever it can to stay on the air,
  267. and that means pandering to the WB network. Plus, aside from Jonathon
  268. Frakes, I don't know if many people on that staff truly know how to write
  269. and/or direct for sci-fi? But I keep the faith that once the producers feel
  270. 'comfortable' that the show will remain on the air, we'll get some of the
  271. good from the first season -- along with the enhancements of the second
  272. season, and then it may actually be the 'break out hit' that they originally
  273. thought it was going to be. I *have* been enjoying the faster-paced
  274. episodes, for a change.
  275.  
  276. Still, I haven't seen much criticism at all, and I was watching carefully to
  277. see the reactions to the new season. And if reports are right, 4 more
  278. episodes were picked up for this season.
  279.  
  280. It's also interesting how different the background story is from the books.
  281. (Minor SPOILERS, if you haven't read the books: The crash simply contained
  282. alien-scientists that crashed. No cheesy royalty story (unless that comes
  283. later?). I find the book version a bit more appealing, in this regard.)
  284.  
  285. But I understand why Nasedo had to die; in order to keep the mystery if the
  286. pod squad's background, he couldn't be allowed to reveal anymore to the
  287. viewers. So, having him 'off in Washington' helped to keep us in the dark.
  288. The only other 'cheesy' thing that bothered me was revealing Isabel's alien
  289. name. Not to be overly scientific, but any alien spoken language would most
  290. likely not even sound like a language to us. Plus, it doesn't really help
  291. the story.
  292.  
  293. One thing that Roswell does so well, particularly in the first season, was
  294. to be very careful at not being the typical sci-fi type of show, where
  295. general societal problems and issues are dealt with in a cloaked manner.
  296. (i.e., think Star Trek). It's actually one of the main things that, at least
  297. for me, makes me not enjoy sci-fi in general. Few movies or shows did it
  298. well enough, such as "Planet of the Apes" or even "2001: A Space Odyssey,"
  299. for me to enjoy. Of course, 2001 was more about computers becoming sentient
  300. than the other topics. 'Angel' is another good example; almost all the
  301. demons on the show are more closely related to America's ethnic problems.
  302.  
  303. I'd also like for the show to have a broader story arc; at the moment, we
  304. just don't know what it is, other than to eventually go home and possibly
  305. winning some kind of war. In the meantime, I guess we'll have various 'bad
  306. guys' of the week to thwart.
  307.  
  308. I noticed some others complaining that each episode is a 'character
  309. episode,' that is to say, and episode devoted mainly to a particular
  310. character. I don't mind that at all, and usually prefer it. For me, having a
  311. little bit of each character in each episode with a prolonged story for the
  312. whole season would be too soap-operatic. So I'm happy with an Isabel episode
  313. last week, and a Michael episode this week. Looks like we'll have a Liz
  314. episode next week.

  332. I wasn't very clear about one point I made in yesterday's post, and thought
  333. I ought to clarify it in case what I said got muddled with 'Princess Di'
  334. type 'royal' issues that I wasn't addressing.

  336. Some things flop dreadfully here. We're good at buying and enjoying
  337. American series that have 'personalities' and 'human relations', and they
  338. do well here. But series about 'big moral issues' that tub-thump, or
  339. programmes that spend more time on theoretical presentations than on
  340. relationships, don't do well. I don't think there's even a tiny element of
  341. offence likely about the use of the term 'royal' to describe the alien
  342. group - that's not the issue - it's that having a big deal about who's boss
  343. and who's following will bore the knickers off UK audiences. They'll just
  344. not watch another episode.

  346. I don't suppose Warners take all *that* much notice of the international
  347. market, but I know that L&C's survival *was* partly because international
  348. sales, especially its huge success here in the UK and in Australia.

  350. I haven't seen any indications yet of how well Roswell is doing on the BBC,
  351. but I'm doing a piece on the local radio station next week, and I'll ask
  352. then . . .

  377. Frakes brought over Ron Moore who wrote for one of the
  378. Star Trek series, though I can't remember which one
  379. right now.  Anyway, Moore is the person most
  380. responsible for developing the Klingon mythology, so
  381. he's pretty good at developing story for 'alien'
  382. species.

  391. I liked the character episodes, especially since it
  392. gave an opportunity to 'grow' each of the characters
  393. in a crucial way.  Max's ability to lead and his
  394. ambivalence at doing so was a serious question that
  395. had to be resolved.  ASK NOT provided us with enough
  396. focus on him to get that answered.

  398. I like the faster pace of this season--hey I'm the
  399. person who slowly went mad during Toy House--though I
  400. know it was a favorite of many other people.

  402. I think Colin's point about the 'young adult' vs
  403. 'teenagers' feel of the series is accurate.  Last
  404. season was a slower, dreamier pace, highlight by Liz's
  405. voiceovers and journal entries.  Sometimes I'm
  406. nostalgic for those, but in light of the horrors of
  407. White Room and then the life and death situations
  408. revealed in Destiny, the dream is over, and the
  409. teenagers have had to grow up fast.  So in a lot of
  410. ways, it's jarring to have them set against a high
  411. school background now, but it's meant to be.  As Liz
  412. put it once "we left normal."  I think the second
  413. season is going to show us just how much we've left
  414. it.

  437. Sorry if this is not what you want to read, Jill - but I think it's doing
  438. credit to the show and its people to talk through what they're doing. For
  439. me, hearing different responses to mine, and discussing our responses,
  440. helps me to see more in the show, and to get more out of it.
  441.  
  442. Having said that, though, I have to say that 'Ask Not' was a
  443. disappointment. There were lots of good parts - I thought 'Kyle' got a
  444. fairer crack of the whip than I've seen him have before, and thought the
  445. idea that he and Tess might 'get together' intriguing - but having him and
  446. his dad *know* about the alien group without joining the 'inner circle' of
  447. friends makes the dynamic very complicated: last season, there was lots of
  448. emphasis on how dangerous it would be if the Valenti's 'knew'. In this
  449. episode, no-one seemed worried about the 'secret' getting out at all, and
  450. despite the sub-plot that showed that power-surges could be 'monitored' by
  451. curious outsiders, there was plenty of casual use of powers (for example
  452. Max's pretty blue-ish screen around Michael and Isabel) as though discovery
  453. didn't really matter any more. Is it going to be ok, this season, for
  454. anyone to know that there are four nice looking aliens in Roswell? What
  455. happens next time Kyle has a temper - or has he turned into a nicer person
  456. this summer, and forgotten that he used to fancy Liz and be jealous of Max?
  457.  
  458. I could see why Max started the episode off running away from Nasedo's
  459. remains, with his shirt still off (nice that someone keeps a stash of clean
  460. t-shirts that fit in the caf=E9 in case a naked runner arrives), but why,
  461. please, were the 'girls' shown jigging together, wearing dresses that were
  462. not of a kind that they would normally wear, and apparently only doing so
  463. to expose lots of cleavage? Has the production team just imposed a flesh
  464. quota that assumes that quantity x of exposure (presumably split into a
  465. separate timed quotas for men and women) will generate quantity y of viewer
  466. numbers? Even the Australian soaps we see a lot of here in the UK manage to
  467. 'justify' their straightforward fleshly titilation with a little more
  468. narrative viability than I could see here.

  470. Predictably, the strand in the episode which unsettled me most was the one
  471. I had been unhappy with in Skins and Bone - the articulation of Max's
  472. status as 'leader' of a special and separate group. I'm so old that I can
  473. remember the day Kennedy died, where I was when I heard, how I felt, that
  474. sort of thing. And I found the casual analogy between Max's challenges as
  475. 'leader' of a group of four teenage 'hybrid' human aliens (where did the
  476. hybrid assertion come from?) with Kennedy's challenges plain offensive. In
  477. the European middle ages, you could have your head chopped off for 'l=E8se
  478. majeste' - making an inappropriate and insulting analogy between your own
  479. situation and that of someone important. I'm not proposing capital
  480. punishment for the Roswell team because of course we can all 'learn' from
  481. history, but this extraordinary over-inflation of Max's situation was
  482. absurd.
  483.  
  484. Why do Max and Michael need to fight over 'leadership' at all? Why is it a
  485. contest between them, without Isabel (with more practiced powers) or Tess
  486. (with all the knowledge she has from Nasedo) being treated as potential
  487. leaders? Aren't they just as well qualified as the men?
  488.  
  489. I hope I'll get used to Roswell looking more like an 'ordinary' town than
  490. the 'special' place it was in the last series; but it seemed odd to have
  491. Max run up to a modern looking frontage of plain glass and then be seen
  492. inside last year's Crashdown caf=E9 set. That wasn't the only continuity
  493. problem: having spent much of the episode wondering when I was going to
  494. find out what a 'skin' was, and thinking I ought to wind back the tape

  498. myself all the way through. I know it's sci-fi and it's meant to be
  499. mysterious, Jill, but sci-fi's meant to be intriguing, not confusing, isn't
  500. it? This felt, as last time, as though bits of explanatory script had been
  501. cut for the sake of the fast pace which, like Mike, I do admire - but
  502. perhaps the structure of the episode could have coped with having this 'who
  503. are they?' question being articulated much sooner?
  504.  
  505. I wish, too, that someone had either taken a decision to have them all
  506. graduate this summer, or reminded the actors to pretend that they're just
  507. kids - most of the actors' apparent age seemed to fluctuate over about a
  508. ten year belt all the way through. Perhaps that'll settle as the episodes
  509. go on?

  538. Thanks Colin - That was very good.  I really enjoy reading
  539. all the views and everything about the show.  I just never
  540. have time to reply or make too many comments.  I thought the
  541. same about the comparison to Kennedy, but I was even more
  542. shocked (scared) at the suggestion of Anikin Skywalker as an
  543. immaculate conception.  But, alas it is only a story (a very
  544. good one at that).

  546. I thought I was the only one who wondered at quite a few of
  547. the "new" scenes, situations, powers, etc. - but being the
  548. die hard fan that I am of the show - I accepted for face
  549. value that this is just a show.  My favorite show of all
  550. time.  Yes, I wonder sometimes about the continuity and
  551. getting the facts straight, etc.  But you know - I just
  552. enjoy watching the show every Monday to "get away from it
  553. all".  I really enjoy all the new with the old.  The
  554. Crashdown is the "safe house" - everything started there - I
  555. DO wonder where Liz's parents are though.  I was glad to see
  556. Max and Isabel's mom at the party.  She was great with her
  557. "looks" at all the goings on.

  591. Yes, one of the differences, I notice, is this season seems to have a more
  592. predominant story arc, unlike last season that highlighted weekly episodic
  593. stories which mainly built on the character's relationships. I think that's
  594. one of the main things that seem unusual to us this season. At least, I've
  595. been keeping that in the back of my mind as I watch...

  619. hurray colin, you wrote candidly and frankly about the first two eps like i 
  620. was thinking and questioned, but was afraid to vocalize. i did not want to 
  621. sound *anti-roswell* -- which i am NOT. i luv roswell, much like i do Buffy 
  622. the Vampire Slayer. in season three of BTVS i posted many questions and most 
  623. of them where viewed as *oppositions* to the show or their own view point.
  624. anyhoo, season two of Roswell, with each ep i try to remain open minded and 
  625. much to my delight the show has been much better than the trailers.
  626. "summer of '47" trailers were met with intrepidation from this list, and 
  627. after viewing the ep i was, as my 48yr old ex co-worker said ---- GAWD! that 
  628. was an awsome ep! the trailers for this mondays ep "end of the world"..... 
  629. well, once again ... i am thinking..."what the heck are the writers doing? 
  630. "totally NOT liking max's hair (although, to me long hair guys are the 
  631. cutest, but not on max).  But max/jason's acting looks like it could be the 
  632. *best* in the next episode. Regardless, I'll be glued to the television in 
  633. great anticipation...

  680. I feel so sad right now.... it compares to how I felt on the season finale 
  681. with Liz walking away from Max (but even worse).  Its hard to stop crying, 
  682. and think- its only a show.  That episode was just wow, unexplainable.  Poor 
  683. Max, poor Liz... that was an unbelieveable thing Liz had to do.  I can't 
  684. comment on the episode right now, its just too painful!  Aren't I pathetic!?!

  769.               Last nights roswell was one of the best. But does anyone
  770. remember about the 48 hours that was very important?? I was thinking all the
  771. way through the show.  If only there was something that Liz could have done
  772. that would have changed the future. Like Change something with Michael. and
  773. maybe becoming very close friends with Tess and getting everyone to like her
  774. and include her in everything and trust her.. Maybe that would have kept her
  775. from leaving roswell and then kept the four together so they could change
  776. the future and not die and Liz and Max could still be together.. I am still
  777. in shock about what happened. Max and Liz are so in love.. And I hated to
  778. see Max get hurt like he did..  If only they was a way where they could be
  779. together and still have everything work out good...  What do you guys

  793. Ok so this is the first time have made myself known on this list but I have 
  794. been reading everyones post's for a long time.In the past I have been very 
  795. busy and barly had enough time to read all of you guys's post's.But last 
  796. night eppy is killing me!! I am so tense right know and last night I kept 
  797. waking up in the middle of the night and trying to figure out what the heck 
  798. the writers are doing.Anywho I am sure they will make it allright but still 
  799. I am sooo stressed right know. I was in tears though the whole eppy and then 
  800. i cried myself to sleep practally.I dont think there are going to be very 
  801. many happy moments for a while. I should also bring out that I am a total 
  802. dreamgirl and this whole "help me fall out of love with you" idea didnt 
  803. apeal to me one bit.I still think that they should have sent the older liz 
  804. and that way young max could have seen why he had to stay away from liz or 
  805. get closer to tess. Anyway I need to go eat some breakfast before i pass 
  806. out:).And I will try to keep in mind the fact that it is just a tv show and 
  807. all this is not reallity.I dont think it is gonna work very well.*sigh*

  862. I  do think it is an absolute must see.  You have to get a tape from someone. 
  863.  Make sure you have plenty of tissues with you though, it is really tough to 
  864. watch.
