  23. Well, I'll go ahead and post publicly since others might be interested in
  24. this.

  26. Okay, Napster is just a nifty little program that allows you to share and
  27. obtain MP3 music with anonymous people everywhere. You can download from:
  28. http://www.napster.com
  29.  
  30. I'm not sure if there is a Macintosh version, but if you're into Linux,
  31. there is a clone called Gnapster. Napster is also currently under the gun,
  32. since it's [apparently] promoting illegal distribution of commercial
  33. CD-quality (and near-CD quality) music. But it's actually meant for
  34. non-signed artists to get their music out to the masses. So enjoy it while
  35. it lasts...
  36.  
  37. Anyway, assuming the rest of us suckers are using MicroShaft Windows, and
  38. assuming you've been able to install the program, just double-click on the
  39. icon and launch the program.
  40.  
  41. I don't remember exactly which options you're asked to answer the first time
  42. you run it, but here are all the available options (from the File ->
  43. Preferences pull-down menu):
  44.  
  45. Email:  anon@napster.com  (Just leave this as is)
  46. Password:  *******    (Just leave as is, unless you're asked for one)
  47. Line Speed:  56-K Modem  (Or whatever speed your modem is, or DSL, Cable,
  48. T1).
  49. Note: If you don't know what your line speed is, just select 14.4K Modem.
  50. Note2: If you live in an area that supports DSL or Cable Modems, GET IT!
  51. Otherwise you're wasting an enormous amount of time, and cannot truly
  52. appreciate the benefits of such programs like Napster.
  53. Audio Player: Internal (If you select external, be prepared to know how to
  54. find the executable file to your favorite MP3 player, like WinAmp or
  55. RealJukebox.)
  56. Data Port: 0        (unless you're trying to do something screwy, just leave this
  57. as is)
  58. Swear Filter: OFF        (unless you want swear words filtered out)
  59. Shared Folder: (If there's already something here, leave it, otherwise
  60. change it to where you want to share your MP3 files with other people, i.e.,
  61. C:\MP3)
  62. Save Folder: (This is where your new MP3s that you download will go, i.e.,
  63. C:\MP3\Downloads)
  64. Ping Search Results: Checked  (Keep this checked, I'll explain why below)
  65. Max Simultaneous Uploads: 1  (Is what I recommend)
  66. Max Simultaneous Downloads: 3 (Or just 1 if you have a 56-K modem or slower)
  67. Ignore the Firewall settings, unless you're using the program from your job
  68. or school that enforces Firewall/Proxy settings such as Universities and big
  69. businesses.

  71. You're also asked for a username. I made mine 'mike_stone65'. Make yours
  72. anything you want.
  73.  
  74. Okay, so now you're in the program, and you're thinking, 'how do a leech a
  75. bunch of cool music?' The easiest thing to do now, is click on the 'Search'
  76. button at the top of the screen. (Don't bother to chat with other people;
  77. it's largely a waste of time, as most everyone is just downloading).
  78.  
  79. So, on the Search screen, you're given the following options to search for:
  80.  
  81. Artist:  (Type in who you're looking for, i.e., Dido)
  82. Song Title:  (Type in what you're looking for, i.e., Here With Me)
  83. Note: You'll find that no matter which of these 2 boxes you enter something
  84. in, it'll still find it.
  85. Max Results: 100
  86. Note: There is a bug with this option. You only get 100 results, even if you
  87. try to make this number higher. Maybe it'll be fixed in the next version.
  88.  
  89. Then you can just click 'Find It!' and Napster will search other people's
  90. hard drives for Dido. If it finds any matches on your search criteria, a
  91. list of songs will be displayed. You can just double-click on the song you
  92. want, and then the file should start to download.
  93.  
  94. If it finishes the file, it'll show up in the 'Library'. You can click on
  95. that button to show that screen, and double-click the songs you want to play
  96. from there. It's a cinch!
  97.  
  98. Okay, let's get technical now. There were some other options there on the
  99. Search screen about Bitrate, Frequency, Ping Time and Line Speed.
  100.  
  101. I suggest that you only download from people with cable modems, DSL, T1 or
  102. higher. The reason I say this, is because people like me with cable modems
  103. are have 24-hour connections unlike 56K dial-up modem people who tend to get
  104. disconnected from the internet pretty easily, or go offline while others are
  105. trying to download MP3's from them, and thus get incomplete files. This
  106. doesn't mean bad things won't happen with Cable, DSL, ISDN, or T1
  107. connections, but you stand a much better chance, AND you'll typically get a
  108. faster transfer.
  109.  
  110. But wait! Sometimes you download from someone with a T1, but it's very
  111. sloowww. Check that ping time. It'll let you know how far away that server
  112. is to you. If it is so far away that it displays 'N/A', it's chancy whether
  113. or not you'll get a good connection with them. The lower the Ping Time, the
  114. better off you are.
  115.  
  116. Frequency and Bitrate have to do with the quality of the MP3 file. In this
  117. case, the higher, the better. Try to always get 128 Bitrate or higher.
  118.  
  119. Also, MP3 files are typically compressed to about 1 minute per 1mb of the
  120. song (depending on the quality). So if you know the song you want is about 3
  121. minutes, and it's just a 1mb file that you see you want to download, chances
  122. are it's incomplete or something is wrong with it.
  123.  
  124. Okay, next we have 'Hot Lists'. You can add me to your 'hotlist'. Just enter
  125. me in as 'mike_stone65' and if I'm online, you can see all the music on my
  126. hard drive!

  128. Napster apparently uses multiple servers that don't talk to each other, so
  129. your buddy across the nation may never be able to see you online,
  130. unfortunately. So Napster has a ways to go in connectivity.

  132. Well, that's about it for now. I think the rest is largely self-explanatory
  133. or intuitive. If you have any questions, feel free to write me off-list
  134. about it. I notice tons of people have downloaded Roswell-related music from
  135. me, so apparently some of you have already found me. ;-)

  246. I know the reruns can get a viewer down. In fact, I don't watch the reruns
  247. of Roswell. Why? The show is "young" so reliving some scenes to ponder new
  248. thoughts has not become a thing. There doesn't seem to be much happening
  249. with the actors/actresses off screen. Alex, or the guys that portrays him,
  250. is the one person on the big screen(...get a faster modem). Honestly, the
  251. series is, for the most part, on its own. Unlike other WB shows, there is no
  252. room for expansion. No crossovers, no companion series, and now the big move
  253. to Monday, has put this show on an island. It's the reverse, younger version
  254. of the X-Files(big fan of), from the aliens point of view. I know there has
  255. been talk of a cancellation, which seems a little soon. The characters have
  256. been on the front of LIFE magazine, which says a lot about it. This shows
  257. seems to be known more for its sexy alien-human couple(Max-Liz) than the
  258. show itself. Just look at the post to this list when there is a scene
  259. between the two(the last new episode). I like the show, but unless they open
  260. it up to things besides Max and Liz's love life, it will die. That would be
  261. pathetic when it seemed so promising in the beginning.

  283. You may have noticed that the WB wants more science fiction incorporated
  284. into the show. I'm never fond of a network trying to control the storyline
  285. of a show, but they may feel similarly to yourself, and are trying to keep
  286. the show in check.
  287.  
  288. The WB likes to think of all their prime-time shows as companions, but there
  289. aren't any I watch sequentially except Buffy and Angel.
  290.  
  291. RayneFire brought up a scary thought, that they're advertising 7 new shows,
  292. but if it's only a 22 show season, there should only be 6 left. I'm
  293. wondering if they already know they're going to be canceled, and were
  294. allowed one extra show to tie up loose ends and have a series finale...
  295.  
  296. But actually, one of the things I like about Roswell -- the whole storyline
  297. is as such, that I think most writers would have already written themselves
  298. into a corner, yet this show manages to escape it's own plot line in each
  299. episode. For instance, I'm glad Max and Iz didn't tell their mother about
  300. themselves, yet other shows probably would have gone through with it. It was
  301. hard to see, too, how they were going to get out of that one.
  302.  
  303. Oh, and for those of you that know I live in Fort Worth, Texas, not to
  304. worry -- I didn't get blown away by the tornadoes yesterday evening. ;)

  463. I know I am already very biased and hate Tess for the havoc she is going =
  464. to cause Max and Liz but I noticed one thing that bothered me. She isn't =
  465. tall like the other aliens.One of the great things about the cast to me =
  466. has been this major size difference between the aliens and the humans, =
  467. with the humans being sort of smallish compared to the aliens. I think =
  468. it adds some intimidation to the aliens and some major presence. Tess is =
  469. small though like Liz. Sort of weird casting there. I did think she was =
  470. cute though.  Just an observation. Gina :)
