Subject: RE: [roswell] Roswell music: attn Mike Stone
Hi there,
Well, I'll go ahead and post publicly since others might be interested in
this.
Okay, Napster is just a nifty little program that allows you to share and
obtain MP3 music with anonymous people everywhere. You can download from:
http://www.napster.com
I'm not sure if there is a Macintosh version, but if you're into Linux,
there is a clone called Gnapster. Napster is also currently under the gun,
since it's [apparently] promoting illegal distribution of commercial
CD-quality (and near-CD quality) music. But it's actually meant for
non-signed artists to get their music out to the masses. So enjoy it while
it lasts...
Anyway, assuming the rest of us suckers are using MicroShaft Windows, and
assuming you've been able to install the program, just double-click on the
icon and launch the program.
I don't remember exactly which options you're asked to answer the first time
you run it, but here are all the available options (from the File ->
Preferences pull-down menu):
Email: anon@napster.com (Just leave this as is)
Password: ******* (Just leave as is, unless you're asked for one)
Line Speed: 56-K Modem (Or whatever speed your modem is, or DSL, Cable,
T1).
Note: If you don't know what your line speed is, just select 14.4K Modem.
Note2: If you live in an area that supports DSL or Cable Modems, GET IT!
Otherwise you're wasting an enormous amount of time, and cannot truly
appreciate the benefits of such programs like Napster.
Audio Player: Internal (If you select external, be prepared to know how to
find the executable file to your favorite MP3 player, like WinAmp or
RealJukebox.)
Data Port: 0 (unless you're trying to do something screwy, just leave this
as is)
Swear Filter: OFF (unless you want swear words filtered out)
Shared Folder: (If there's already something here, leave it, otherwise
change it to where you want to share your MP3 files with other people, i.e.,
C:\MP3)
Save Folder: (This is where your new MP3s that you download will go, i.e.,
C:\MP3\Downloads)
Ping Search Results: Checked (Keep this checked, I'll explain why below)
Max Simultaneous Uploads: 1 (Is what I recommend)
Max Simultaneous Downloads: 3 (Or just 1 if you have a 56-K modem or slower)
Ignore the Firewall settings, unless you're using the program from your job
or school that enforces Firewall/Proxy settings such as Universities and big
businesses.
You're also asked for a username. I made mine 'mike_stone65'. Make yours
anything you want.
Okay, so now you're in the program, and you're thinking, 'how do a leech a
bunch of cool music?' The easiest thing to do now, is click on the 'Search'
button at the top of the screen. (Don't bother to chat with other people;
it's largely a waste of time, as most everyone is just downloading).
So, on the Search screen, you're given the following options to search for:
Artist: (Type in who you're looking for, i.e., Dido)
Song Title: (Type in what you're looking for, i.e., Here With Me)
Note: You'll find that no matter which of these 2 boxes you enter something
in, it'll still find it.
Max Results: 100
Note: There is a bug with this option. You only get 100 results, even if you
try to make this number higher. Maybe it'll be fixed in the next version.
Then you can just click 'Find It!' and Napster will search other people's
hard drives for Dido. If it finds any matches on your search criteria, a
list of songs will be displayed. You can just double-click on the song you
want, and then the file should start to download.
If it finishes the file, it'll show up in the 'Library'. You can click on
that button to show that screen, and double-click the songs you want to play
from there. It's a cinch!
Okay, let's get technical now. There were some other options there on the
Search screen about Bitrate, Frequency, Ping Time and Line Speed.
I suggest that you only download from people with cable modems, DSL, T1 or
higher. The reason I say this, is because people like me with cable modems
are have 24-hour connections unlike 56K dial-up modem people who tend to get
disconnected from the internet pretty easily, or go offline while others are
trying to download MP3's from them, and thus get incomplete files. This
doesn't mean bad things won't happen with Cable, DSL, ISDN, or T1
connections, but you stand a much better chance, AND you'll typically get a
faster transfer.
But wait! Sometimes you download from someone with a T1, but it's very
sloowww. Check that ping time. It'll let you know how far away that server
is to you. If it is so far away that it displays 'N/A', it's chancy whether
or not you'll get a good connection with them. The lower the Ping Time, the
better off you are.
Frequency and Bitrate have to do with the quality of the MP3 file. In this
case, the higher, the better. Try to always get 128 Bitrate or higher.
Also, MP3 files are typically compressed to about 1 minute per 1mb of the
song (depending on the quality). So if you know the song you want is about 3
minutes, and it's just a 1mb file that you see you want to download, chances
are it's incomplete or something is wrong with it.
Okay, next we have 'Hot Lists'. You can add me to your 'hotlist'. Just enter
me in as 'mike_stone65' and if I'm online, you can see all the music on my
hard drive!
Napster apparently uses multiple servers that don't talk to each other, so
your buddy across the nation may never be able to see you online,
unfortunately. So Napster has a ways to go in connectivity.
Well, that's about it for now. I think the rest is largely self-explanatory
or intuitive. If you have any questions, feel free to write me off-list
about it. I notice tons of people have downloaded Roswell-related music from
me, so apparently some of you have already found me. ;-)
Good luck!

You can download the Mac version at www.macster.com. Sometimes the redirect
doesn't work and you have to go to www.blackholemedia.com/macster.

Napster is a great program, and I've downloaded tons from it, but if you're
looking specifically for music from Roswell, I recommend that you got the
Roswell MP3 site:
http://altern.org/roswell/
They have almost every single song that has been played on Roswell along with
a brief description of what was happening on-screen at the time.

Check this out...
There's a company called RadioFreeCash.com (www.radiofreecash.com) that is
paying you to listen to the radio on your computer... and not only do they
pay you, but they also pay you for the referrals who you bring to their
community. This could mean serious cash for you, especially if you get in
early.
You've probably heard of AllAdvantage and all the money people are making
because they got in early. Well, radiofreecash.com is even better, because
all you have to do is listen to the radio, which frees you up to do other
stuff, like surf the net, write your term paper, pay the bills, email friends
- - whatever! They realize that your time is valuable, and they know that
paying you for it is the best way to get you to listen - they are effectively
starting a revolution in radio, and you should get in early - I did, and you
can too!
Just go to their website and sign up! Please go to www.radiofreecash.com
using this link so I get credit for having referred you... its

Roswellites;
I know the reruns can get a viewer down. In fact, I don't watch the reruns
of Roswell. Why? The show is "young" so reliving some scenes to ponder new
thoughts has not become a thing. There doesn't seem to be much happening
with the actors/actresses off screen. Alex, or the guys that portrays him,
is the one person on the big screen(...get a faster modem). Honestly, the
series is, for the most part, on its own. Unlike other WB shows, there is no
room for expansion. No crossovers, no companion series, and now the big move
to Monday, has put this show on an island. It's the reverse, younger version
of the X-Files(big fan of), from the aliens point of view. I know there has
been talk of a cancellation, which seems a little soon. The characters have
been on the front of LIFE magazine, which says a lot about it. This shows
seems to be known more for its sexy alien-human couple(Max-Liz) than the
show itself. Just look at the post to this list when there is a scene
between the two(the last new episode). I like the show, but unless they open
it up to things besides Max and Liz's love life, it will die. That would be
pathetic when it seemed so promising in the beginning.

Hey there!
You may have noticed that the WB wants more science fiction incorporated
into the show. I'm never fond of a network trying to control the storyline
of a show, but they may feel similarly to yourself, and are trying to keep
the show in check.
The WB likes to think of all their prime-time shows as companions, but there
aren't any I watch sequentially except Buffy and Angel.
RayneFire brought up a scary thought, that they're advertising 7 new shows,
but if it's only a 22 show season, there should only be 6 left. I'm
wondering if they already know they're going to be canceled, and were
allowed one extra show to tie up loose ends and have a series finale...
But actually, one of the things I like about Roswell -- the whole storyline
is as such, that I think most writers would have already written themselves
into a corner, yet this show manages to escape it's own plot line in each
episode. For instance, I'm glad Max and Iz didn't tell their mother about
themselves, yet other shows probably would have gone through with it. It was
hard to see, too, how they were going to get out of that one.
Oh, and for those of you that know I live in Fort Worth, Texas, not to
worry -- I didn't get blown away by the tornadoes yesterday evening. ;)

Good observation Gina..I hadn't even though about it that way. I did think
Tess was cute..and sort Isabel-like in personality...I don't want her coming
b/w M&L but I do think I will enjoy her character.

Hey Guys,
I know I am already very biased and hate Tess for the havoc she is going
to cause Max and Liz but I noticed one thing that bothered me. She isn't
tall like the other aliens. One of the great things about the cast to me has
been this major size difference between the aliens and the humans, with the
humans being sort of smallish compared to the aliens. I think it adds some
intimidation to the aliens and some major presence. Tess is small though
like Liz. Sort of weird casting there. I did think she was cute though.
Just an observation. Gina :)

Hey Guys,
How are you? Not only was it great to see The Balance again but they also
had a new preview which featured, yes, the Tess monster. In case you didn't
see the commercial, some highlights were:
a) Isabel befriending Tess
b) Max sort of staring at Tess and warning Isabel about trusting new
people. Her snide comeback was something like, "Well it's not like I'm going
to fall in love with her and reveal the very secret that could endanger our
very existence"
c) Topolsky talking to Michael and begging him for help
d) Topolsky telling a very dolled up Liz that all of their names(the
aliens and humans) are on some list
e) Max punching the hell out of Michael! I can't wait to see that.
f) The 6 of them on a cliff staring out.
It looks great guys and well worth our wait!! Talk to you all later! Gina
:)
