Mike, I think you should write this up and submit it to a journal -- even
the NASAP journal. Especially after you have done it with a few more client=
s
and can mix up the results -- and change the names. It could be very helpfu=

to many therapists. Jane Nelsen

I had a family counseling session this morning, a blended family (Mom, Dad,
two teenagers, one 12-year-old). Actually dad and mom aren=B9t married yet,
which is a large part of the issue: should we marry? should we marry right
now? after we get all our issues taken care of? And it went superbly

1. I started with compliments and appreciations =AD a few pleasant

2. Then did the Two Lists =AD the issues started coming out with this
=20
3. Then did the kindness/firmness chart =AD more issues coming out;
developing clarity on the kind of home environment they want
=20
4. Then asked each to suggest a =B3tool=B2 they could use to help create
that kind and firm environment

Jody,
The Children's Cabinet here in Reno is a nonprofit agency that =
functions as a family resource center, in concert with many local =
agencies and groups. You could contact them at The Children's Cabinet =
(I'd suggest contacting the executive director), 1090 S. Rock Blvd., =
Reno, NV 89502. Their phone number is 775.856.6200. (They also have a =

childcare resources and referrals, family counseling, educational =
tutoring, and parenting education, as well as a number of other programs =
for youth and families. You can learn more at their website, =

I got my start in parenting education and counseling at the Cabinet, =

Hi Jody,
Charge on- what a great thing to do! A lot more human than
land use planning! (great Jody highlight in the March PD
Newsletter!) Have you approached the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation? My experience with family resource centers is that they
are heavily dependent on government funding.... Do you know of any
level governments with money right now?
It seems that there are more and more of this generation of
the super rich that wants to give back philanthropically, so try to
get folks like that involved. Going for the local givers and making
it a community endeavor, grass roots wise, may give it greater odds
in these times of meager resources and greater demand. You may
already be far along.
I love what a community hub the centers can become. Here in
SC Co. over the years the little centers have merged under the
largest non-profit social service agencies in the county . I'm on
the Community Action Board and one of our programs is the Davenport
Community Resource Center- the farming/cement community up the coast,
a huge myriad of services is offered, more with time and networking
and fund developing. However we are facing one of the greatest
budget crisis this state has ever seen. Our sister organization,
Community Bridges has as one of its programs, the Live Oak Family
Resource Center, Blanca and I will be teaching a class through them
in the spring (collaboration with the City School District Adult
School Program), paid for by the 1st Five Program (cigarette tax
money).. I could give you their contacts info, or would be happy to
try and answer more specific questions,
love Jane

Oh, this just reminded me. I was in Target the other day and they have
brochures near the exit of the store. One of the brochures was about grants that
they give out to communities around their stores. One of the things
specifically mentioned on there for grants was "parent education."

Kelly - thanks for bringing this up. I have applied for the Target Grants.
They are farily small grants ($100-500/year) and have strict guidlelines -
the project must serve the community the specific store serves (small
geographic area). A committee of employees from the store makes the
decisions - and, as you might guess, some of the stores/committees are very
organized and some are not (one Target store I talked to didn't even know
they had such a program, even though they had the brochures on display). I
have applied twice, to two different stores, and did not get one request
(they said they had committments to the area schools), and never got an
answer from the other.
Certainly worth a try, though.

Re: (posdis) Family education centers/family resource centersI have a very
old book called Adlerian Family Counseling, A Manual for Counseling Centers
that we used in Orange County, CA, when we had our FEC there in the 70's.
It seems a winning formula and I'm happy to bring it to you in Portland this
week, Jody!
