Subject: GH/PC: GH Actress Dies
>From the ABC Soaps Web site:
Norma Connolly, who played Ruby Anderson on
GENERAL HOSPITAL died yesterday morning, November
18, in Los Angeles.
Ms. Connelly, who originated the role of Ruby in 1979,
once said, "I wouldn't have stayed with GH so long if I
didn't love it! Especially the way fans greet me like an old
friend. Strangers come up and kiss me! I guess everyone
wants an Aunt Ruby in their life. On a plane once, a fellow
passenger saw me and cooed, 'I know you, you're Aunt
Ruby!,' but I knew her, too . . . she was Julie Andrews!"
GH co-star Jacklyn Zeman (Bobbie Spencer), who plays
Ruby's niece said, "Norma Connolly Rodman had a major
impact on my life, both personally and professionally. She
was part of my family in real life, as well as on television. I
loved her and I will miss her, as we all will."
Wendy Riche, executive producer of GH, added, "Norma
will be deeply missed by all of us at 'General Hospital.' She
was a beloved member of our cast and she was our friend.
She will be in our hearts and the hearts of her fans forever."
Norma studied acting with Morris Carnovsky at the Leland
Powers School of Drama, with both Harold Clurman and
Stella Adler at Actors Studio, and at the Cushing
Academy; and performed in more than 500 live and filmed
television shows and in feature films. She considered
herself fortunate to have been in such American theater
classics as "A Streetcar Named Desire," both on
Broadway and on tour with Anthony Quinn; and "Night of
the Iguana" and "The Crucible," both at Los Angeles'
Ahmanson Theater.
Her numerous other theatrical credits included Broadway
productions of "Love of Four Colonels," "Make a Million,"
and "The Right Honorable Gentleman" at the Huntington
Hartford Theater in Los Angeles. Among her motion picture
credits were "The Wrong Man," "The Other" and "They
Only Kill Their Masters." A member of the board of
directors for both AFTRA and the Screen Actors Guild, she
served as chairman of the Guild's Women's Conference
Committee and on its Morals Committee and Negotiating
Committee.
Ms. Connolly was born in Boston, Massachusetts and was
the daughter of Beulah and Archie Connolly. She is
survived by three children and two grandchildren.
Her family said, "In the course of her 71 years, Norma
came a long way and didn't miss many points of interest.
We sent her on her final journey with love and thank Aunt
Ruby fans for their affection."
Donations can be made in her name to the Actors Fund,
729 Seventh Avenue, 10th floor, New York, NY 10019.
I practically grew up with Norma's portrayal of Ruby and I
will miss her presence in her second home of Port Charles.
