There's a blurb about Sting in this week's Entertainment Weekly. They are predicting the Grammy winners and mentioning quotes they've heard around the entertaiment industry from Grammy voters. Here's what EW predicts for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance:
"Survey says, Who cares? 'What a lame category.' Nontheless, Sting should walk away with it. 'It's not Ricky; I don't think enough people respect his vocal chops. It's not Marc Anthony; Ricky will take too many of his votes. I think it'll be Sting. It clearly is his comeback year.' Even if the song is off an extremely obscure Ivan Lins tribute album? 'You mean it's not the Jaguar commercial?' 'Sting sings the f...ing phone book and gets nominated.'"
Also, Target has a nice little ad plugging Still Be Love In the World and BND in Sunday's newspaper ad insert.

I know, I know... we talked about this on the list a while ago... however, after someone here (very graciously) offered up an m3 of the song, I became (as usual) somewhat set on finding a version of better quality. Months later, I FINALLY come across a better version... still encoded at 128 kbits ... but the song sounds %100 better (or very nearly)...
The mook that I was donwloading it from over Napster cut me off before it could finish, tho... so I have this very nice sounding clip of about 1:30 of Truth Hits Everybody '83...
Anybody have any ideas where a better recording could be found? I have almost NO chance of finding a real copy on vinyl (I'm in the middle of cornfield laden Illinois, USA :) ) ...
Help?
Going back into lurk mode....
Til Again,
-Dave

No... I don't have the member's name unfortunately. Also, Napster is still accessible. here's the rulling so far, but I don't know if they've "passed sentence" yet. :)
Thanks for the idea, though.

Thanks a for posting that. I'm sure any new members that haven't heard that will be thrilled (at least I hope they will be) to hear it...
However, the version I'm speaking of was a good bit better sounding than that (nothing personal. I don't mean to offend here at all) Also, there's another mp3 of that song out there, same quality as the one on the web site, but with a longer intro (takes longer to fade in, can hear more stuff) but the quality is precisely the same. Number-wise, all these are the same, but actual sound-wise, the partial version I've got seems a pretty good bit better (okay... so, I over-exaggerated originally about the quality... but it is noticeably better to any ear)
Anyway, for any of you still brave enough to be forging through this doozy of a post, I stake my claim that, indeed, I am a musical nazi. (ear training in music theory is to blame partly) However, given the lack of information I have on this subject, and given that I was hoping someone on the list might have run into a better recording or that the person I obtained the partial file from might be a list member (which doesn't seem to be the case) I suppose I can only ask graciously that anyone happening upon this marvelously ethereal song take a moment (should it be convenient) to post a note to the list. Wow... now that the extraordinarily long sentence has ended, I suppose I can say good evening to one and all.
Til Again,
-Dave (Man in a Suitcase)
P.S. What happened to everybody? I hope that the trend from a year ago of abandoning the list hasn't become widespread.... who would I scheme with to attend the induction of The Police into the Rock n' Roll hall of fame?

Okay, a couple of people have politely called me on the carpet about saying
Eminem is a wife-beater. I am unable to substantiate that claim (although I
don't follow Eminem that closely!). I should've gotten my facts straight
before writing that.
Here's an excerpt I found on E!Online:
<<As for his relationship with his wife, Eminem hasn't exactly made an effort
to keep their turbulent marriage behind closed doors. Maybe it's his idea of
therapy, but the Grammy-winning rapper has been known to rap wistfully in his
songs about killing her and throwing her body into a lake. Last month Eminem
was arrested for allegedly pistol-whipping a man after seeing him kiss Kim
outside a nightclub. He was <A HREF="http://aol.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,6591,00.html">charged</A> with felony weapon and assault charges
and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday for a <A HREF="http://aol.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,6597,00.html">preliminary hearing</A>. He
faces up to five years in prison if convicted.>>
I should've said he raps about killing his wife and beats up other people.
I've subscribed to this list for about 4 years, but rarely post. I hate that
one of my very few posts was inaccurate!!
To make this remotely Police-related, I want to thank those of you who go to
the trouble of making otherwise-unavailable recordings available for download.

<P> This is getting a little silly. Is this a sting/police page or a trash EMINEM page? Who cares if he's white or black? The Beastie Boys are popular clean white rappers, and the Boyz to Men have good voices... are they trying to be white? There are plenty of white gang members and black harvard graduates, they're not posers, its what they are. I guess people who like Sting music probably don't go for rap, but we shouldn't thrive on this EMINEM anti-rap disscussion. Next thing we'll be tearing Milli Vinalli up for lip synching, what I'm trying to say is "who cares about EMINEM?"</P>
<P>Its what I think even if I might catch some heat for it from the people who have nothing better to do than diss a artist cause we have nothing better to talk about.</P>

Subject: (police) The World Around the Police DVD?
Date: 25 Feb 2001 02:57:35 EST
Well, all this talk about Police Around the World drove me to watch it. I enjoyed it, no question.
However, I noticed one thing... the quality was shot to hell.
Yes, I have a copy of an original. Thank you, JenSting (for the stickers, too!)
Let me be blunt: Why isn't it on DVD yet? For that matter, why aren't more Sting/Police "movies" on DVD? After all, I'm sure there is plenty of footage that we never got to see of our boys/our man.
I suppose I'm slightly bitter because I don't have a clean copy (the quality pops in and out a LOT times); no fault of the provider, mind you, just that these tapes are degrading every time we watch them. So, why in the name of quality music has all this footage NOT been released to a type of media which will almost never degrade like DVD ??
Is there a way to lobby for this? I'm sure the pleas would be futile, but do others feel the same way?
Also, I'd like to add that although "Police Around the World" might not sell by itself (let's be realistic, we aren't the largest advertising target in the world), perhaps loading up a DVD to its actual capacity (which is quite large) with footage, perhaps putting the Synchronicity concert on there too; or whatever; basically give people a VERY good reason to buy it, maybe put "PAtW" in with a *good* Sting concert or somesuch. After all, what's with this "marketing machine" Sting has? Yes, I think it's pretty good, but wouldn't it be a good thing to go ahead and release older Police stuff to "the masses" too?
Wasn't a large target audience of Sting's recent album a "younger generation" ? Well, why in the world would they start listening to music like his just from that album, in all honestly? They're *young* (well, I am too, at 21) Why would they be interested, as a whole, in more serious music? I'll tell you: Many aren't, *unless* you give them a good reason to...
I'm willing to put forth the hypothesis that many of us became interested in all this through The Police's music. Not ALL of us, mind you. However, I hope that each of you reading this will give me the point that The Police had a pointed knack for REALLy entertaining people, and a certain character of rebellion, a good dash of vulgarity and darkness... a kaleidoscopic mix of what a young person/teenager could relate to, really get into and not feel demeaned, or intellectually insulted.
To try and bring this post to a close, the fact that The Police were a thing of the late 70's & early 80's means less, and I hope you'll agree, than what they did and the enjoyment and enrichment they brought to people all over the world.
Now, I recognize the media machine that they were/had, I'm not blind to that, but 20 years later does it really matter?
Now, granted, we can't resurrect The Police in full, we can't bring back all the magic of years past. No, friends and fellows, impossible. However, if Sting truly wishes to be enjoyed in the years going forward, why not release more about the Police?
Okay, so he might not look as good now as he did then... that's a consideration.
Okay, so I want to end this and really can't think of how...
I'd really like anyone and everyone's input on this. I KNOW you guys like Police Around the World. I KNOW you'd all like to have a copy, especially those who haven't seen it. So WHY is it (beside the making money aspect) that we can't obtain these things in a cleaned up and rather permanent format?
Til Again,
-Dave [Man in a Suitcase]
P.S. "Props" to all you people out there who are generous enough to spread the work of The Police to those of us who have almost no way of obtaining it on our own. You guys rock!
