Subject: (pc-help) installation of second hard drive
Date: 27 Aug 2000 12:16:29 -0500
Hi all,
I just installed a second hard drive to my system (ide), I am running
Windows 98 SE. It is set to the slave on the same channel as the other
hard disk. ON my other ide channel I have a CDRW and a Zip drive. My
first problem is that upon rebooting the system I am getting a floppy
failure and the busy light on my floppy is always on. This is not my big
problem, though. The bigg problem is that in my device manager there is a
red 'x' next to an item "generic ide disk type 46" under "disk drives."
Under "hard disk controllers" there is a yellow exclamation point next to
"primary IDE controller (dual fifo)." Under the Performance tab it says
that all drives are operating under MS-DOS compatibility mode. I would
like to fix all this. However, the new drive is showing up in explorer and
seems to function fine. I've tried updating the drivers, but it tells me
that the latest versions are installed. Any ideas? Thanks.

Don, restart in Safe mode. Go to the device manager and click on the hard
disk controller(s) and drives and click remove to get ride of them and then
reboot and let windoze reinstall them all. Do this for all instances of
the controllers and drives. Many times when you install drivers later on
top of older ones, windoze adds it to device manager instead of replacing it.
Good luck,
niki
