I wanted to second this. But first! Preface! :)
So I started listening to moby when I was in high school, like
1992/93 when he was doing things like Bring Back my Happyness. Borderline
cheesy house music with nice piano hooks and dope underground techno a-la
'go'... Then came the animals album and after that I think moby's head
disappeared up his arse. Did anyone read the interviews in which he ragged
on orbital (and has since apologized, Mr. Too-Little-Too-Late)? To say
nothing of his conversion to concert venues (along with the appropriate
price changes and crowd changes; can't dance when you're crushed against
4,000 people), I can only give the Its Hard to Let You Go genius so much
leighway.
I also remember him preaching about how he never does drugs and
everyone who does is bad, then later I remember reading about him talking
about smoking pot at a show. Fucking hypocrite.
O well.

HAH! This is possibly the most amusing thing I've seen in 3 weeks
at least.
I think the point was the duality of his beliefs, not his
conversion to an oft-held viewpoint. :)

I know. And while Moby may be a hypocritical sell-out, I personally
lost respect in his Music, first... then i lost respect for his beliefs. The
thing about the area:one fest that gets me the most is the quote from Moby
[and i'm paraphrasing]: "The music i listen to doesn't get enough exposure,
so i figured i'd throw this festival..."
Now please correct me in this... but, when did Oakie not get enough
"exposure"? Since "the trance invasion" -- Paulie Girl has been a household
name!

Yet the next album he'll have a rant against that very same activity in
his linear notes. That, I believe, is my problem with him.
And since we're on the subject of his music... Has anyone heard his
Voodoo Child side project? Very good minimal piano with Moby-esque hooks.
Probably his last solid musical release.

okay before this gets out of hand I will go on record as saying I appreciate the
fact that Moby has talent. That is a given. I don't know why I don' t like
him, I just don't never have. Although I will admit I did listen to "Move" alot
when it came out. That is about the only song of his I can handle.

Have any of you ever seen this clown live? Like recently?
I saw him at a local club on his last two tours (both times "free" on a
two-drink voucher, that's how poorly the shows sold), and both times he
closed the show with this RIDICULOUS "primal scream" performance, basically
him standing on his keyboards and uttering this looooong, one-note shriek at
the sky or the gods or whatever a Moby howls at.
I can't for the life of me figure out how such a savvy* guy can not know how
utterly stupid he looks doing this. I don't know if I've ever seen a more
self-indulgent, self-aggrandizing act during a concert. Makes your average
N-Stync seem like the kings of modesty and the consummate showmen.
Also, might his "performance" on this tour simply consist of a long reel of
TV commercials, movie soundtracks and videogames? Why not just release his
next single straight to a commercial, know what I mean?
And don't get me started on the evils of an Intel sponsorship... <shudder>

===>yes. twice. first time to just check it out the second time to just
make sure i hadn't dreamt it. what a sad performance it was. i wondered if
any of his "band" actually played instruments - for real. it looked like a
high school air band contest with a really great light show and killer
sound. and what the heck was up with the dj spinbad?? what a joke!!! i
felt embarrassed for electronic music after seeing moby. the real sad part
was that people actually liked it. my head in my hands.

Yeah I saw him @ the hammerstein ballroom in NYC (I HATE HATE HATE
that venue, but don't get me started on that...) about 5 or 6 months ago.
It was the same sort of Moby-stroking-my-ego sort of performance. At one
point he says "I've always wanted to play a 10 minute guitar solo at a
concert, so now I will" and he does. It wasn't even particularly good, and
all the other musicians just hung around waiting. He did live renditions
of his house tracks that sucked, and the last song was Thousand, during
which all the house lights were off except for about 30 colored flashing
lights and a spot light all focused on him during the entire song. Plus he
kind of held his arms up in a rapturous looking pose the whole time.
Total slog.

voodoo child was typically his more acid-tecno side project of his old

Certainly better than all the drivel Madonna's been releasing

Hey--does anyone know anything about the group
Global Dance Project??? I have two of their songs on two
separate compilations, but can't seem to find any albums
of theirs. "Khrishnamurti Groove" and "Japanese Cherry
Blossoms" (or something like that) on two ambient groove
compilations. (Journey Into Ambient Groove volumes 1 and
2. I'm still looking for 3 if anyone has any extras....)
Later!

That's a pretty poor qualifier...
Everyone of Aphex Twin's albums has his face on them... in one form or
another. He's obsessed with his face. Besides there are plenty others...
Kruder & Dorfmiester appear on at least 2 of their album covers, etc. etc.
However, I don't think anyone was coming down on you with any seriousness

So maybe they're actually mocking the concept of artist-photo covers? Not
that I'm personally down on them or anything...

Yes. It was a parody. But they also had pix of themselves on their
other 2 albums. :)

No, I do like them. Lots. In fact, I'm playing Fuck Dub by Tosca as I type
this.
I was saying that I'm personally not against the concept of artist-photo
covers, but was just wondering about K&D's actual motives in doing that
cover that way.

Yeah, I felt *exactly* the same way. However, the very worst part was
hearing Moby actually sing! What the hell? Moby going "MMM Lordy my
troubles with god" is like imagining LX singing lovin you' after you've
been used to Minnie for so long. *shudder* or saying to the crowd "they
were long and clear and there were lots of starts at night" a la rickie
lee jones (or whoever i dont want to start that debate i hit 'delete'

If I'm not mistaken, the touring incarnation of the Art of Noise circa In
Visible Silence (i.e. J.J., Anne, Gary) used to "sing" or speak their
samples live, a very corny practice indeed...

Well there's the K&D Sessions remix album, which was a compilation but was
also an "official" album. Then, when sales of K&D Sessions really took off,
some label (Shadow?) reissued Conversions, an old mix album they'd done, to
ca$h in on their popularity.
And then there's the various side-project material, from Peace Orchestra and
the previously-mentioned Tosca...
But the short answer is yes, in that G-Stoned is the only "official" K&D
release with original tunes on it. When's the next one coming out???

hey kids!
how about being grateful that you'll have a second chance to see our
beloved Orb? i wouldn't care if the Orb were opening for the Backstreet
Boys, providing I'd get to see the lads do their thing! (besides, Moby's
deal is going to be WAY more together than Coachella, and no one says you
have to watch his performance!)
BTW, caught Fatboy Slim last night with Darren Emerson (formerly from the
Underworld) who were both amazing and i highly recommend catching them if
you're able...

Witchman told me that in addition to the Moby opening dates, the Orb would
do their own headlining swing back through the states (kinda like they did
on Orblivion), which makes it much, much easier for me to blow off this
Area:One mess. He specifically mentioned wanting to come back to Chicago and
play the Metro again.
Anyone figure out yet whether the Area:One thing is actual Orb Live or just
LX spinning?

Amazing how history repeats itself.
1996 : Been in Zeebruge (Belgium) to see The Orb live on a festival.
The show lasts 20 minutes, the authorities shut down the speakers
(the group was the last one to perform). I wrote to the Orb list how
sad I was. Andy Hughes writes me back privately :)
2001 : Rachel in Coachella... Same thing, except it's Simon who answers her...
And about the Moby thing : he's probably a prick, like most artists
(Ralf and Florian from Kraftwerk, Michael Jackson, Prince comes to my
mind). But some of his tracks are classic, but it's just my humble
opinion.

I *think* i might have seen moby live in 1995 or 96 when I saw Bjork at the
Palace in New Haven, CT... this was my first ever exposure to live electronic
music and whoever was the opening act (which, I hope was Moby cuz i can't
stand that dork) had extremely terrible wannabe divas (with even worse
lyrics), and just gave me an embarrassing peek into the whole "rave" scene..
is there a site that lists artists' peformance dates and locations?? please
let it be moby - he just sucks so much ass!

ps- bjork, however, was awesome... the old-dude drummer totally rocked out. I
dunno why i never saw her during homogenic?? did she tour? I'm dumb!
