Yeah, I have to agree here. Whilst they're very cheap and the postage is
incredibly quick, their customer services department sucks. I pre-
ordered 'Cydonia' from there over a month ago and as soon as I heard of
the 'Special' UK Edition, I wrote to them and cancelled my order and
bought the UK version elsewhere...

...and on Wednesday, I get a 13-track 'Cydonia' arrive in the post. If
anyone else has the UK & International versions, are they supposed to
have different coloured covers?

Unsure whether to pre-order the new Daft Punk album from them now or
bite the bullet and pay more? Does anywhere else online in the UK do
free delivery on UK-sourced discs?

Subject: (orb) Weird Orb bumper sticker connection?

Hi all,

while driving home from work a few days ago, I was behind a van that had a
bumper sticker on it that said "SAVE THE SONOMA COAST". The interesting
thing about it, though, was that it also had the same exact symbol that is
found on the inside of the Live 93 sleeve (kind of a weird, spiral thing...
hard to describe) on it. I'll have to check, but I think that this sybol is
also on a couple of the other Orb releases as well.
Maybe I'm just ignorant, but does this symbol represent something? I
instantly recognized it as being the same, as I have looked at that design
many times while listening to Live 93.

Any info would be great, as I am very curious about this.

'steamroller' mix of once more...

...however, there is a new unreleased orb track due
to be broadcast on the evening session this week -
maybe that's called steampower?

Just a quick question:

There was a recent post about some of the BadOrb releases being made
available at the recent upcoming tour. Is it worth not buying via BadOrb.com
the initial releases and waiting to buy at the tour (assuming they don't
sell out before I get there!), or buying the initial lot online?

I've just received my ticket for the London Astoria gig in April. That's 3
gigs in 3 days - Laurent Garnier/A Guy Called Gerald at the Astoria on 3rd,
A Guy Called Gerald at the ICA on the 4th, and The Orb on the 5th - maybe I
should take the week off!!

You mean I'm not alone?? In all the discussions I remember reading about
Cydonia v1, not ONCE was Ralf mentioned. To me, the distorted laughs and
shifting melody were pure Orb. That's the one track that I have copied
onto compilation CDRs to listen to in the car. Ah well, there's no
accounting for taste. Nice to know at least one person also holds that
particular track in high regard.

The Chain reaction ftp is usually up midweeks, during working hours CET, and down in the weekend and midweeks in the evening CET. So far it's been my experience that when people are not able to log on it's a problem at their end of the line (software, setup, firewall etc.) or simply a matter of 'bad timing'. I'm a tad bit late due to the computer being out for upgrades and such.
Ouch, 312 emails waiting when we got it back.  Here's the LA TImes (2/25)
review of Cydonia:

Orb mastermind Dr. Alex Paterson got his start in the U.K. electronic scene
by uniting techno with progressive avant-garde music.  On the Orb's fifth
full-length album (due Tuesday), Paterson's verison of Frankenstein's
monster is fully realized in the form of a conceptual techno album about the
life of primordial Martians (the album's title comes from the name of the
mythical city on ancient Mars).

While the disc is, in many respects, every bit as out there as the notion
suggests, "Cydonia" is also a fascinating musical collection that weaves
from warm pop to trip-hop to heavy techno to circus sounds accompanied by
David Lynchian spoken interludes.

Paterson wisely welcomes listeners into his opus with the warmest track,
"Once More."  Kicking off with a playful synth sound reminiscent of Yaz's
[Yazoo] 80's hit "Only You" and featuring gorgeous vocals by Japanese singer
Aki, the song would make anyone sign up for a trip to Cydonia.  Lest they
get too comforable on their visit though, the album quickly shifts into
"Promis" an instrumental that weds techno blips and bleeps with Celtic
undertones.  An ambitious work, "Cydonia" is not intended for all audiences.
However, those fascinated by the thin line between genius and insanity

There doesn't appear to be a single LP yet. I was told when I bought that
2x12" that it's limited edition but they don't know how many of.......

I would have thought that logic dictates that when stocks of this run out
that they will release a single disk pressing.

Awwww, man, don't make it sound so over and done with; I was holding out
hope that we'd see/hear Lewis once again on the upcoming tour...

Speaking of which, does anyone know anything about opening acts? With Sun
Electric (or SE Berlin, or whatever they're called this week) being one of
the early releases on BadOrb, I've gotta admit my fingers are crossed that
they'll be opening again...

Well, given that all of the shows are before the first "official"
pressing date, they'll probably have mock-ups or white labels
"available", which I assume means for viewing, although they could
certainly do a brisk trade in white labels if they wanted to flog them.

((not to mention re-doing the site to make it less of a memory- and
cpu-hog, and re-enable the flash left-click menu (it would be nice to be
able to make it somewhat less hoggish by switching to low quality)(too
many site designers forget (or just don't care) that not everyone has
huge bandwidth or the latest cpu, and that perhaps utility should trump
their grand design excesses)))

So I was wondering what the orb fans thought of smith and mighty? Or even
the bristol sound in general. Both of their full length albums I like
alot, Bass is Maternal has so great dub stuff, and big world small world
has some great tracks, alot more R&Bish, but still beautifull in there own
right.

For those who have not heard of them www.smithandmighty.co.uk should get
you started.

Also anybody have any opinions on some other artist's that are alot like
smith and mighty, Being in SF I have a hard time getting the inside scoop
on good bands that are mostly on the other side of the atlantic.

First timer to this list. LONG time Orb fan. Just to share my first Orb
experience:

Was back in college in OH (1991) driving to a DJ gig in Columbus and was
listening to the alternative station coming out of OSU. Heard (of course)
Little Fluffy Clouds and was immediately hooked. Literally RAN to the local
alternative record shop the next morning and found the double CD UK version
of the first album. I was too psyched. Been a fan ever since.

I am a HUGE live music freak and have been looking for more live Orb ever
since the Live '93 came out. I'd like to get a collection together, however,
I've nothing to trade (as far as The Orb goes). Would any kind soul(s) out
there mind a couple b&p's for a newbie like myself? I'd be forever grateful
and would hopefully return the favor in the near future. Please get in touch
off list if you'd like to help out.
