then you must be sad about orblivion and cydonia...

U.F.Orb is defenetly the best album/time for the Orb.
it was way more professionnal than Ultraworld (sound, equipement) and they
never got back to it's level again. never had so good singles neither.
But i have to say that for me, the real U.F.Orb has always been the 2cd
version... with the 40min BR and assassins... you just can't top that!!
after that they've tried lots of new and different thing and equipement but
never to the level uforb had acheive... it's space, dancy, dub AND orb!!

Never thought of it that way -- my first Orb album was Ultraworld, but
I think UF is my fav. Pomme Fritz comes in a close second, about equal to
Orblivion. Another fav. band of mine is Information Society -- I heard
all of their albums in order and my fav album of theirs is Peace & Love Inc.
which was their third.

I guess that's why it's "usually" your favorite. =)

As long as everyone's talking about favorite Orb albums, I guess I'll hafta voice
my opinion for once.
first, i think it's hard to compare them because of obvious differences in the
general sound. Ulraworld and U.FOrb have a general style of beats then chill outs,
where as pomme fritz sort of melds the two, with more gray area and a whole buncha
craziness. Orbus Terrarum is more dense, and also has that "earthy" feeling
(duh..), as opposed to being thrown out into space or somewhere far beyond our 4
dimensions. Whenever I listen to OT, I usually feel like I'm gracefully gliding
over wonderfull terrains, sometimes going higher into the clouds, sometimes
touching ground...but anyways...As for Orblivion, it's super-dense with beats, and
finally cools down towards the end - As the title (and cover art) implies, it's a
big soup of all things orb in one streaming semi-ambient frenzy.

Getting back to favorites though, I'd say U.F.Orb has the most consistent feeling
or atmosphere - O.O.B.E. takes you there and you never really have a chance to get
back, despite different styles of ambient, sound, house, dub, etc (that's why LX
is the man...).  OT just doesn't have such a spaced-out feeling, but i think it
does have the most "movement" of all the albums - It's a good one to walk around
w/ headphones to. Even after listening to Orblivion so many times, i still can't
remember how certain tracks sound, mainly because of it's ultra-complex density of
sounds and general lack of long buildups (save for S.A.L.T).

OK. My Conlusion: U.F.Orb has the sound that most of us want - a nice trip to
another dimension with slow ins and outs. I agree with whoever said it's like a
more advanced Ultraworld (yet I really love the less-produced sound of Ultraworld
it's more raw space than anything else). Orbus Terrarum - i like it best durring
the day when it's sunny out =) Orblivion isn't as "easy" an album, but gets better
with each listen as you start recognizing things you realize you really like  -
Asylum is probably my favorite orb track because sometimes it sounds really lax,
and other times it just rocks. Therefore, I don't have a favorite, but I have more
time to listen to music at night, when I'm tired or whatever, so I grab U.F.Orb
most often.

I won't even comment on Cydonia v.1 until I've heard it straight through at least
a couple times... okay that's it!

A very good friend of mine gave to me for my 29th birthday a vinyl copy of
Sasha and John Digweed : Communicate.

It does not contain all the tracks from the double CD, but just 8 tracks.
But it includes UNMIXED :

I think this version is longer than the mixed one on the CD, but I cant
tell : I just heard the CD, I dont own it.

On a windows Machine:

 download WinAmp from winamp.com

 Load up the play list for cydonia.

 Go to the options > visualiztion > select plug-in

 browse to the OUTPUT plug-ins

 select "Nullsoft Disk Writer plug-in"

 hit close

 then, hit play on your winamp and the file will start converting to .wav
 (the song will appear to be moving rather fast, and you will NOT hear an=
y
 sound)

 you may or may not have to choose a place for your .wav's to be saved to

 then take your wav files and add them to your burning software in the
normal
 fashion - making sure that you are on the AUDIO CD setting.  (I use
 Adaptec's EZ CD Creator)

 Hit Record

 Choose "Create CD"

 On the Advanced TAB Choose "Disk-At-Once" (this removes the 2 second gap
 between tracks)

 Wait 10-20 minutes (depending on the speed of your CD-r burner)

 then pop in the ORB - Cydonia on your stereo.

 enjoy!

Yeah, you can use the Disk-Writer plugin in WinAmp to do so (go to
Options/Preferences/Audio I/O Devices and switch from WaveOut DLL to the
DiskWriter Plugin). When you replay mp3s now, you won't hear anything
but they will be converted to wav files that you can then burn onto CD.
Don't forget to switch back to WaveOutDLL after decoding, otherwise
you'll be confused if you start up WinAmp again later and you don't hear
anything when you replay an mp3.

Another way would be getting a newer version of Nero or Easy CD-Creator
(4.0 or higher) which can decode mp3s on the fly. This may take up some
more cpu-time so you better stick with WinAmp if your PC isn't all that
powerful.

If you don't have WinAmp, you can dl it for free at
http://www.winamp.com

Yes. If you have a cd-r burner, use Nero (30 day demo available at
www.ahead.de). Simply choose 'audio cd', then drag and drop mp3 files on
the window. Nero will auto-convert the mp3s into cd audio before burning
the disc.
Adaptec's full version of cd creator 4.0 will also do the trick, but
you've got to buy it. I don't think the crippleware versions floating
around have this option.
If, for some reason, Nero doesn't work, you can use Audio Catalyst to
convert the mp3s to wavs, then use your usual cd-r burning program to make
an audio cd of the wav files. But I'll warn you, converting Cydonia to wav
will use up about 700 meg of hard drive space.

On the mac, SoundJam MP is great and can do the same as the ones listed for
PC. (overall this is the best player, encoder, ripper, decoder that i've
used on any platform).

I don't really follow this trend, my first Orb cd was Orblivion, and my
favorite would be either OT or UFOrb, depending on my mood (and yes, the
2CD version of UFOrb)
Rarely is Orblivion my favorite... Ultraworld sounds a bit to raw to me
usually, Pomme Fritz only when I'm in a very odd mood.  My favorite single
would have to be Oxbow Lakes though.

There's lots of great music to explore if you're into this kind of thing
(though, of course, no one else quite sounds like DVOA).  Voice of Eye,
Hafler Trio, O Yuki Conjugate, and Manifold-label stuff are current
favorites.

The first disc of DVOA /Piss Frond/ is really interesting too but totally
different from his usual stuff ... heavily mutated pop songs and
instrumental jams, not unlike some of the dark early stuff on Mute.

The man behind DVOA, Mark Spybey, has another project called Propeller, and
of course he was a member of Zoviet:France (along with Robin Storey of
Rapoon).  He also did an album called /A Fire In the Bronx Zoo/ with Not
Breathing, whose Abyss disc of /The Starry Wisdom/ is awfully interesting
ambient.

I've seen a few happen, but standard venues tend not to be too keen on them
because people don't drink enough.  The best thing to do is get some kind
of alternative space, like an old movie-house, gallery, planetarium or
something.

Yeah, this is what would happen to me to ... be suddenly bumping up on the
ceiling!  I figured out how to get outside, once.  =)

And I don't know that it technically qualifies as an OOBE, but my
girlfriend and I had simultaneous(!) astral projection sort of experiences
while listening for the first time to Daren Seymour & Mark Van Hoen's
/Aurobindo: Involution/.  Incredible record.

amen! i'm rather high-iq, and the only thing they knew to do with my
boredom in my high school was diagnose me and drug me. i reacted to the
drug so horribly (because it was a completely wrong diagnosis) that they
got me off it immediately...and i got through the rest by dropping out and
tuning in to the orb.

see, it was on topic after all. i'm serious, the orb was like my only link
to the real world there for a while!

To make this even more hyperrelated... Also Spybey work with Thierault of
Viovod, and made a really nice hypnotic ambient/expirimental/electronic
piece... comes packaged in a nice canvas baglike material.

I was listening to this once... after i had come home from work, quite
stressed and tired.. I pooed this CD in and played it real loud.. and lyed
out on my couch... I didn't fall asleep, because I was quite aware of the
songs and the surroundings.. but I didn't feel the couch or any part of my
body around me. I don't remember going anywhere... I just remember my mind
floating inside the sound, and that all that was in my mind and thought,
nothing else.. not stress not work... nothing but the sound... The CD build
slowly into this last track that is this swirling, hectic, fratic piece,
that just climaxes and falls into the low droning tones.. And at that moment
when that soudn ahppend.. I snapped awake, and i felt like i had been
dropped right into my body... Was wierd...

I think my favorite song so far is MLLOL. I still can't get into the first 3
songs because of the vocals. It's just personal taste, but to me, the reason
I like the Orb so much is because there isn't any vocals.
(...and the samples don't count since they're thrown in for humour purposes)

And to continue the favorite album thread, my favorite definately has to be
OT.
When I first heard Slug Dub, I fell in love with it. It took me a while to
get into the rest of the album, but its definately my fav. Not that I don't
like the others, but every time I listen to OT, I hear something different.
I think it's difficult to compare OT to U.F.Orb though, because the styles
are so different. It's all good!

I have to admit though, Orblivion has been on the shelf since about 2 months
after it came out.

and finally,

I listened to the Orb before OT came out, and when it was released, it
became my fav after a couple months, so I don't know about the theory of the
first album heard being the fav. I'm sure it happens, but it would be silly
to make a generalization like that...

well my first album was the american big life one CD version of 'Adventure beyond the ultraworld', that was in 94. then i bought Uf orb 1 CD version and pomme frittz not too long after that. In 95 OT came out and i got that, i loved this album. by this time i really loved the orb an repected their music on a new level because the did not stay with only one style (also when i started to love richard james witth "i care because you do') but when orblivion came out i was so amazed, it was the most wonderful thing. orblivion is my favorit album no doubt about it. i build such beautiful worlds in my head listening to that album, very moving. but i cant even rank the other ones before orblivion because i love them all so dearley. there is nothing like the orb, with or with out mind altering drugs (though that is such a wonderful xperience)

Not too sure if there's a 12" promo doing the rounds, but I'm sure 'Once
More' is included on the limited DJ-friendly triple vinyl version of
'Communicate' in it's full, unmixed glory. Shame it's the dub though :(

the new album "frankie pett and yellow starfish play the music of dead
voices on air" out aug 8th [ hint hint ] has some more of that mutilated pop
sound. the last us tour with LPD had a few nice new poppy songs about loving
someone so much you let them eat your ice cream while listening to can.
