Subject: (orb) Techno (non-orb)
Re: Proper scope of Orb list. I believe that music, especially techno,
ambient, house, etc. should not be considered as off topic as, say,
Akira or Cassini. Personally I have learned a lot about non-Orb music
through this list.
For those who disagree, I apologize for the off-topic question.
I have found a club that plays house here in Shanghai, but the clientel
is not very sophisticated, so no Orb. :-(
Am returning to US for a visit, and promised to look for house, techno,
drum and base, etc. for the DJ. He only wants hits. Can anyone give
some advice? Thanks.
Andrew

I think the important thing is not how 'off-topic' a subject is but whether the
list is swamped by it. The whole Cassini thing was interesting for the first
two or three posts before it got out of control and turned into a childish
argument. I believe they still make keyboards with delete keys on them, so you
can always press them if the message doesn't interest you. This doesn't mean,
however, that people like to find 350 irrelevant messages in their inbox when
they get into work in the morning. I think the spirit should be one of
moderation rather than censorship.
Thankyou for your time, and sorry for the 'waste of bandwidth' that a couple of
kilobytes of ascii takes up...

I emailed spacechildren directly, but have not yet received a response. (As
you can tell by their website, http://www.spacechildren.com , they don't
update things very often.) I'm here in SF (spacechildren HQ) and haven't
had any luck locating this remix (or any other DHS stuff, for that matter)
I will say that they're a tremendous show, with spectacular video
accompaniment, so catch em if they're ever in your neighbourhood!

Subject: (orb) raver film
hey orbies!
this is somewhat off-topic, but probably of interest to most of you...
last night i caught a screening of "Better Living Through Circuitry" which
is a feature of the ResFest Digital Film Festival (http://www.resfest.com)
- - this was a really excellent documentary on the rave scene, which included
some fantastic interview footage of a whole slew of great musicians,
including: Electric Skychurch, Genesis P-orridge from Psychic TV, Moby,
Carl Cox, The Crystal Method, DJ Spooky, Roni Size, Frankie Bones, Heather
Hart, Scanner, DJ Keoki, and many many more... Live footage included
System 7 (although I was disappointed that there wasn't any interview
footage), and the whole thing contained many a track from FSOL. it was a
really favorable presentation of raves/warehouse parties as community
rituals, and contained a whole lot of footage of intelligent people saying
intelligent things (along with a few dopes, but that's to be expected) and
having a damn good time.
also playing at Res was Cinema Electronica - a truly impressive array of
techno music videos, all of which were downright inspirational.
(Underworld, Autechre, UNKLE, etc.) if you're into the visual side of
things, this is not to be missed.
the festival's headed to LA next.... (and no, i'm not getting commission
for my testimonial!)
just thought i'd spread the word about cool stuff going on...
=)

p.s. anyone headed to the Coachella Fetsival?

Last I heard it is completed, but no records have been pressed. Being
a huge DHS fan myself, I am eagerly awaiting it's release as well. It'll
be the debut release for Space Children Recordings, which is based out of
San Fransisco I believe. I can't remember the other remixers on it, but I
do know there'll be one by Meat Beat Manifesto. That's when/if it ever
comes out of course.
Space Children Recordings has a web page, but there is no mention
really of the 12". Here's their url:

You're thinking of MC 900 FT. JESUS (not MBM). Not sure where the
original sample is from though.

Again, This sample can be heard on the Meat Beat Manifesto "Edge Of No
Control" single at the end of the "Circular Cosmic Spot" track.
