<>===<>I like the vocal versions... Not over the original, but especially
the first one (disc 1 uf off)
is pretty cool. (litte Reagge with your Dub Martini, sir?)
As far as orblivion goes, It was in VERY heavy rotation when it first came
out. but Yes it has slacked off since. However the Toxygene (import 1&2 set)
singles Rock! I only have one but try to listen to it when i have the time
to change cds (usually at work, where i listen to a lot of my music)
I'm sorry to say That Orbvs is not in rotation as much as i'd like. I
scratched it pretty bad on my disc man trying to write down the lyrics to
Slvg Dvb. (Rewinding the CD 50 times to hear certain snipets over and over
again, fucked something up) And i don't know about you guys but I'd rather
buy Music i haven't heard yet then replace an old cd (Orvs was my first
Orb... I think i've told you guys how i lucked upon this blessed band,
right?)....
If anyone would like to Send me a CD-R of Orbvs Terravm I would be happy to
reimburse you with something in return. Email me privately... If not I guess
i will have to go out and buy it again ... Not that i wouldn't mind throwing
more money in LX and Co.'s pockets but like i said... I'd almost rather get
something new then walk out with a cd i know by heart back and forth and in
each of its multi demensional Layers....
BTW - Did anyone notice that there is an actual thread going on here? I'M SO
HAPPY. With this list being slow, I've been forced to bicker with the
spammers on alt.music.orb for fun....

Subject: (orb) What's 'appenin'
I guess I'm what's called a newbie, so here's a bit about me.
I'm also what you call your visible minority, of the white-haired variety.
I mention this only because it places my current devotion to electronica in
a much wider musical context. My music of choice has always been jazz,
specifically the so-called ":modern jazz" that began in the 1940s (can you
believe that? 1940s--modern!). I also have a large "classical" collection
of mostly twentieth-century stuff.
My electronica interests have stabilized somewhat over the three or four
years that I've been collecting, and the range is now centred on people
such as Paul Schutze, Wolfgang Voigt (Gas), Thomas Koner, and others in
that style. I've been through most of the dance/trance/techno stuff, and I
still find it useful from time to time. Through all of the styles and
genres that form my now-extensive collection of electronica, The Orb
continues to be the most consistently interesting group I know of. Their
constant shifts of style and colour are unlike most others who feel the
need to stay close to a perceived signature sound. They also epitomize more
than most my view that the best of this music is "the new jazz". It has the
essentials of repeatability and re-interpretability, albeit only within
their own body of work. There ain't gonna be no "Boston Pops Plays The Orb
Songbook", though Sting may try something: he just has to be everywhere!
Apparently.
Enough of that. My enquiry is as follows.
I've looked at OAA and found it to be a bit lacking. I was onto the Mocker
site for a brief period before it went away, and I'm totally blown away by
the thought of being able to grab all those live gigs. This is where I find
The Orb to be at their most interesting in the changes they make to the
performances one is familiar with on the "standard" recording.
So: what is the rationale behind OAA? Is the Mocker site a different
entity? Is it true that Mocker is authorized to publish anything that is
not presently in print? If yes, why isn't it/he/she the Orb Authorized
Archive? And does anyone know if and when it/he/she will be back?
Good to be aboard.
Tarrah.

My three favorite Orb trax I really cant say for sure but I have to

Plateau. Almost too relaxing.

For myself, I rank both Oxbow Lakes and Slvg Dvb also as part of my Orb
favourites. When I heard Orbvs Terrarvm for the first time, I thought it
was a pretty experimental and 'heavy' album, but listening more and more to
it, I really started to enjoy that one.
And being a HUGE Miles Davis fan of the 70s era, I immediately noticed the
leyboard line from Calypso Frelimo in Slug Dvb. Anyone else mentioned here
already on the list ?
I once read in a Dutch music magazine called OOR, that LX was heavily
influenced by that Miles Davis 70s era, and that the particular
keyboard-line was just improvised in the studio, by him and Thomas Fehlmann.
But apart from that, I think especially Slvg Dvb is great, it has lots of
low bass sounds......I have both the CD and vinyl version (which is
different really.....check it out) of Orbvs Terrarum and I think the vinyl
version is the best one.....IMO they may have done a better job by putting
Orbvs Terrarum onto two CDs instead of cropping it all up onto one.
In common, Orbvs Terrarum was very underrated here in Europe, but it seemed
to be a huge success (breakthrough) in the US, right ?
Cheers,
Wouter

I love all the Orb albums, but Orblivion has been my favorite since
it came out. All the tracks just flow from one to the other really
nicely. And, I absolutely love Delta MKII so everything starts from
there. =) I listen to it in my car or in my room all the time. It's
not as much "bedtime" music for me though, not as much as the other Orb
albums. The album I play the least is Orbus Terrarum, it's almost too
laid back for me, and I don't like some of the samples used (like "I
am leaving for Constantinople tonight...".
Anyway, I just wanted to put in a vote for Orblivion...

I thought I was the only one who likes Orblivion.. I'm glad to heard some
other Orb fans love it as much as I do.
I also love Delta MKII, though IMO Ubiquity takes the cake. It's the
perfect transistion from Delta -> Asylum, and it's not as if it's a segue
either.. probably my fav on the album.
Some quick food for thought on Ubiquity - (IMO) It's the audio definition
of the word.

the US version on cd times in at 79:41, whereas the UK map pack cd I
have times in at 77:58. I'm pretty sure this is the same for all of the
europe cds too.
Slug Dub has the last voice bit on the US cd, but was cropped for the
UK. I'm pretty sure this is true for all the Europe discs too.

The keyboard line you mention is from the song called Maiysha, (from the
1975 double-album "Get Up With It", which also features Calypso Frelimo,
which is a killer Miles track)

Too similar to be a coincidence; plus, on Thomas Fehlmann's "Flow" ep, the
track Finger on the Map samples Miles' 1972 "On the Corner" lp.

I'm really sorry to say this to you, but it really IS in Calypso Frelimo !
(and LX also mentioned that title in the referring article, so.....check

I love Orblivion too. I think it's great and, IMO, it's their most
psychedlic album yet. In fact, I still listen to it quite frequently. My
only complaint is that something doesn't seem quite right about it though.
Like I said, I think it's the shorter tracks -- not to mention that a few
are not quite up to par with the rest of the album, IMO. But all in all,
this is an excellent release.

Hello all.
I can't seem to shake this vision of me driving across the US for Orb
shows, and thinking I don't have any idea when Cydonia is coming out.
Is there any other Orb fans in the Chicago area as crazy as me to go on
a trip for a week or 2? None of my friends like either going to shows
or the Orb as much as I do.
Gavin

Hello All!
I am unable to connect to "orblivion.com". I was hoping someone could
please send me the Orblivion screensaver, if it is not too much hassle.
I miss the sample from "S.A.L.T." coming on at the weirdest moments and
freaking me out, just like an Orb song. Thanks in advance.
Peace,
'bette

according to what Coldcut said on their own site (I don't have the url
right now but I had saved the html page on my pc) the "Say Kids" sample is
from:
Buffalo Bob - Howdy Doody ("Say Kids..." & "Goodnight Kids")
FYI, the same same appeared at the beginning of "Jack to the sound of the
underground" by the late Peter Slaghuis, aka Hithouse (I have a page about
him somewhere under http://www.olografix.org/djbatman/heroes.htm ...I know,
I haven't updated it in ages... ;)))
Ahhh... this gives me the occasion to ask some collaboration for a project
of mine: The Sampling Archive. Is there an Orb sample list somewhere? I am
compiling a list of samples (look under
http://www.olografix.org/djbatman/SamplingArchive.txt) and it would be of
some help if someone had such a list (or rather if there's no list, it
would be great to have some of your contributions about sounds samples
included in Orb tracks) :)
bye,
Nicola (Dj Batman) Battista

hey Orbsters!
well, some friends and mine have made a solid agreement to locate ourselves
wherever the orb might be on New Year's Eve... (i can't think of a better
way to start the Millennium, can you?)
any word on where the boys will be playing? (Smiley?) i'm assuming:
a)they're not staying at home and B) it will be someplace in Europe,
probably London (as I doubt Andy would want to leave his little rapscallion
behind on such an occassion)
let me know and i'll buy the tickets!!! (even a rumoured show would at
least give me something to look forward to!)
cheers!
=)
