I agree with Chris the LA Underworld show was one of the great shows to
hit Southern California last year. Right up there with Portishead,
Bjork, Kraftwerk and Massive Attack. I can't pick a best out of those
five. It was a good year. But not as great as it could have been with
an Orb gig added to the list. Hopefully this year they will return to
Los Angeles.

Hey everyone,
a friend of mine knows how to play the riff for Oxbow Lakes - both the
string and orbus versions, it was really cool listening to the orb come out
of my mates keyboard, I told him he aught to make a midi file of it but
things are quite limited music wise in the educational institute that I am
in, but he can do it, he sure can and maybe I could get it as a wave or
midi file, anyone interested?
Regards, Lee.

I bought Boards of Canada based on list recommendations, using the somewhat
flawed logic that if someone likes the Orb, and I like the Orb, then if
they like Boards of Canada, then I'll like Boards of Canada.
Wrong. BOC, at best, is inoffensive background music made by knob

While I support the idea of respecting the artists wishes and, indeed,=
obeying the law (most of the time,) I've never really understood what=
threat mp3 files on the net pose to cd sales. Rare is the mp3 that is=
anywhere near perfect, having the quality of the actual CD... at least to=
my ears. Ditto for scanned cover art. Then there's the collector's=
urge... no, even if all Orb material, past and present, were online, I'd=
still be out there trying to find actual copies of everything, and I have=
a feeling anyone who's fan enough to want to download it all feels the=
same way. I'd download it just so I could hear what I'm missing by not=
owning it-- yet!
OTOH, I might very well settle for an mp3 of some pop trash that I might=
enjoy for a couple of weeks and never listen to again.
oh well...
Is there any more specific date for the release of "Cydonia" than 'February=
1999'?

Or, in the case of Fehlmann, problems from R&S.
Even as someone who doesn't use the OAA that much, I feel compelled to chime
in and re-re-re-iterate that it's not meant for stuff that's still in print
and available. And don't give me that "I just want to check it out to see if
I want to buy it" argument.
I had no trouble getting Good Fridge: Flowing Ninezeronineeight here in the
US from Dave at EAR/Rational Music.
I don't know why we keep having to repeat this, if it's because we keep
getting new members or what, but the OAA is only for rare and out of print
stuff. Don't take money out of the pockets of artists you like by putting
their music on there while it's still available in shops.
Sorry, had to vent.

I'm up for any SF Bay area Orb listening gatherings anyone cares to
organise, but my small studio in Berkeley is hardly the ideal gathering
place.
I can provide most of the Orb material which is on CD for such an event,

So here I stand trying to explain myself and what I recently posted to
this list.
First and most important: I did not and I do not intend being
disrespectful to those who make the music that enhances my life. I'm not
this kind of dishonorable persons who steal music through the internet
and at the same moment disregard the hard work those artists put into
their projects.
>And don't give me that "I just want to check it out to see if
>I want to buy it" argument.
John Goelzer, I'm not taking this because I actually buy the music I
like. Furthermore I want to share my experiences when I listen to music
like 'good fridge' with others. Offering 'good fridge' was rather an
attempt in doing so - if you believe it or not!
But after all I thought about your comments. I can understand your anger
about this, and I honestly apologize for what I did. There's nobody I
could possibly share my music experiences with here in this town. My
offer to post 'good fridge' to the OAA (DERRIEN Jice: It is certainly
not the the only thing I am interested in!) was an act of desperation
because nobody ever listens to music like that with me together. Please
believe me and take my apology. I won't bother you about any OAA stuff
again.

I'd be up for a Bay Area Orb party too!
I've got lots of Orb, mostly on CD, and CDJ500's to mix it with.
I also have quite a bit of other music that might appeal to Orb fans.
I could also bring the Patterns and Textures video.
When the weather becomes nice outdoors, I've got a generator too.
I know at least 3 more people who would want to come to such a thing...

I have traded with him before and had no problems. He even offered to do
me another copy of the tape when my Walkman ate it (thank the lord for
MiniDisc).
However, judging by his reply to you and the fact that he offered to
trade knowing he can't, that's a tad silly.
(How much does it cost to complete a trade anyway? a tape or two and
some stamps?)
Mind you, he was a bit touchy when I said I would trade him a MD copy of
the U.F.OFF session if he stopped posting so much wank to the list.
Thought this bit of info may help. Probably not though.
On a related note, does anyone want to swap me a copy of the Peel
Session on MD for something? :)
It's sad to see shit like this going down on the Orb list, it's not
known for it. I myself have only had one problem and one year on, it was
rectified with much, much apologies and I got far more out of it than
was originally agreed.

fine, but please don't try to get the oaa to put it on. other mp3 stuff is
pirate stuff, this isn't. i believe piracy has its place. but much more
than that, i want to see the net used to propagate hard-to-find stuff.
and by way of review, the fehlmann album isn't as futuristic/synthetic as i
might have foreseen it. instead, it's a very living album, and brought me
in a very different way than i've been brought into orb-related stuff
before. so knob-twiddling it ain't.
sorry for your BoC experience...some you win, and then there's the average
stuff out there.
hope this has helped, even a bit.

Pete,
I understand your concern, as Lee does take quite awhile. I got some
stuff from him awhile back, which took a LONG time for him to send out,
but hey - he sent it, and he's a really nice guy.
So don't get your panties in a bunch.. your stuff is in good hands. :)

acually that sample is originally like that.. they didn't mix up the "cold
mare's ass" part, it was just like that originally.. quite a funny sample
indeed!
they used that sample in Secrets during the '97 peel session.. which was
awesome i might add! (thanks Lee!)

Subject: (orb) Orb shirt, DJ Spooky
Hi there!
I was at the store Hot Topic and the guy at the counter had an
awesome Orb t shirt on! I asked him if they sold them there, and he told
me about how he bought it at a show... Im still getting over the fact
that Ive actually talked to someone in person who knows who the Orb is
and went to a show!... anyhow. is there any way to order any orb gear?
And is there any web site with their tour schedule on it if they
are/will be touring? sorry guys, havent been on this list long, lots of
questions! thanks in advance, you guys are awesome!
One more thing.. Im going to a concert soon, Everclear, Soul
Coughing, DJ Spooky and some other band are playing. Is DJ Spooky any
good? Ive heard of him from the Orbital mailing list, just not what he
sounds like. Thanks much again!

here's some tidbits:
cdnow.com has some great generic orb tshirts i say generic because they're not
tour shirts, but are genuine orb graphics. Usually just the name and album?
name <maybe)
i saw dj spooky this year.
His music is a setup including a live drum set (toms snare the works) a guy
on bongos. an mc (rapper) spooky (who plays stand up electric bass,
turntables, and a guitar i think) a keyboardst , and another turntablist.
they go from song to song expirimenting with different styles and makeups of
participating members and any given time. the best part is when spooky does a
solo~ some mad skratchin and cutting of two Jazz records. the bleeps and
blurts of the horns barely escape his mad technique except in perfect time to
build the 'song' up...
worth a listen.
the soul coughing set might prove more entertatining.
and if they still touring with plastallinamosh they suck.

hey there. my name is Devon and i am new to the list
the reason i joined up here was, aside from being
curious as to why other people like the orb too,
i'm trying to find a copy of the us release of
adventures beyond the ultraworld. somebody said we could make a deal
involving a certain very high class dame's rarities and B-sides album,
but i never heard back after i asked what protocol there is for
exchanging real addresses. maybe he's busy or thinks i'm a geek.
well, i AM so THERE. any how, yeah- so the only thing i can see anywhere
as far as A.B.theUltraW is the uk mix. Unedited! as if that's
appropriate.
sorry, limeys (it's ok, i have the queens blood in me)
but the uk version is too much like a bad mix of live 93
and lacks the drive and childlike innocence that first attracted me to
the us release. i welcome any thoughts on this topic
if you agree, disagree...i even have more to say about it.
so ya, Serena: i too was kinda reluctant to post my questions.
This one is probably the dumbest of all, but what is
the "oaa" and how do i access it? is it anything like the Aphex Twin
selected loops site? cuz that is a great way to sample music before you
buy it.
ok, before i send the longest message ever, does anyone out
there know about CoolEdit from Syntrillium? i'm just
figuring it out, so if you have any pointers i'm listening.
also, is ReBirth available in a download(perm.) anywhere?
that's it i'm done.

The Orb - Island
*** (out of **** stars)
Ambient techno is hardly an in - your - face pop style, so the notion
that an ambient act would have hits - much less enough to fill a
greatest - hits album- may seem hard to swallow.
But the Orb did in fact have its share of successful singles, all of
which are duly represented on "U. F. OFF: The Best Of The Orb." This
being the Orb, however, the set recounts the group's history in fairly
cheeky fashion, presenting "Blue Room" in it's 7 - inch single version
(instead of the 40 - minute album edition), and offering not one but two
mixes of "A Huge Evergrowing Pulsating Brain That Rules from the Center
of the Ultraworld."
Alternately silly, soothing and psychedelic, it is indeed the best of
the ambient act's output.

Well, the review is accurate enough I think. The fact that the Orb's
catalogue is so elusive and ever growing make even the greatest hits a
proper staple in my discography. I will agree catching up with The Orb
has been a journey. I only hope that when their next "Best Of.. or
Auntie Aubrey's greats... comes out my own collection of ORB will be
radiating parallel waves of ever - expandingseismic bliss!
