Don is right that there was a less-limited UK repressing in 1994, though.

For what it's worth, the promo guy at Island UK who's been providing us with

Well, just about all the places I shop at sell new releases for around
$11.99. Since this is a BONUS disc, it shouldn't be sold as a 2 disc
set (I got the DJ Shadow disc (preemptive strike) w/bonus disc for $12).
If you pay much more for a new release... maybe you should go to some
different stores... even commercial ones like Best Buy are pretty cheap.
Alright folks, lets start hearing some reviews of UFoff!

Man, i get so tired of hearing this shit.. anyone else in the northeast
(even cities) like me notice that no place sells new cd's for under $15 or
$16? the small specialty shops are even more expensive since most are
rare as hell imports.. plus to my knowledge there's no best buy up here..

I didn't see Alex claiming it was a new track, I saw their promo blurb claim
it was a new track and quote Alex with a description. Sounds like a fine
distinction, but you have to realize, these are marketing materials we're
talking about here. :-)

Here in Albuquerque, we used to have a Best Buy basically right across the
street from a Media Play (Musicland's attempt at standalone
music/book/video/software stores). Boy, let me tell you, with those two
battling it out with each other you could get just about any damn thing you
cared to name for $11 or $12.
Of course, then Media Play closed down because they couldn't make any money
selling CDs at those prices...and Best Buy immediately started hiking things
up to the $13-$15 range. And over the last six months Best Buy's selection
has gone right into the shitter.
I wish Tower would get off their asses and open a store here, 'cause right now
the best CD store in town is Circuit City -- a pretty pathetic situation
*before* they started eating into the floor plan of their CD section with DVDs
and (yuck) DIVX...

Well, no imports ever sell for $12 a pop anywhere. But general domestic
releases, sure. Newbury Comics, a small (15 or 20 stores) chain in New
England (which, last time I checked, qualified as northeast), sells loads of
CDs for $12 a pop, and they stock lotsa kool indie labels and techno stuff.
New releases and top 100 are always pretty cheap there. I got the 2CD DJ
Shadow _Preemptive_Strike_ for $11.88 there. And their "$3 off" coupons are
ubiquitous (you can download them from http://www.newbury.com if you desire).
Their imports are steep, but no steeper than Tower or HMV usually (no
Blockbuster Music or Virgin Megastore around here).
> plus to my knowledge there's no best buy up here..
I've seen ads on TV implying that they're coming to New England soon.
One thing I do know is that many people outside the US really hate hearing
Americans bitch about CD prices, because the prices wherever they are (Europe,
Canada, Japan, etc.) are considerably higher. Consider yourself lucky.

There;s this super dope store in the Boston area called Newbury
Comics that had all new releases and top 50 for $11.88 and every sunday
they have cupons for $3 off any cd regularly priced 12.99 or more, so you
usually wont pay more than $3 for any new cd, unless its normally a
double. Supposedly the double versions are supposed to be the same price,
but this is not often the case....

===>Dude, I can feel your pain. Most of the "big name" stores
(I'm thinking along the lines of Camelot, the Wall, Coconuts,
Sam Goody, etc.) are ridiculously expensive. The Wall is by
far the worst in my area. Coconuts is the cheapest. For
example, a brand new cd (NOT on sale) at Coconuts will be
anywhere from $14.99 to $16.99...the SAME cd at The Wall
would range from $17.00 to $19.99!
Granted, if I travel 45 miles northeast to State College,
Pennsylvania, there are a few outlets of a local(?) chain
called Mike's Music & Movies (r Mike's Moveis & Music),
where (they claim) MOST cds are $11.99.
First, this isn't necessarily the case--I was just there a few
weeks ago, and saw PLENTY of cds above that. Second,
that doesn't really help me at all, since I travel to State
College maybe once every couple months--and it's usually
NOT just to browse cd stores.
The point: I must concur that many of us AREN'T fortunate
enough to live in an area in which there is adequate
competition--and hence, lower (read as: reasonable) prices.
Hey--if any record company/record chain execs are paying
attention (and I DOUBT SERIOUSLY that any are...or
would even care, for that matter), THAT is the main reason
I don't purchase new cds from new groups and artists. In
fact, the only cds I HAVE been purchasing over the past
several years are those that I already had on cassette. (A
SLIGHT exaggeration only, I assure you.). And believe you
me: I'm NOT the only one! I mean, why would I want to
shell out nearly $20 for something I'm not even sure I'll
listen to, when I can replace my decaying cassette copy
of something I KNOW I'll listen to over and over again?
I'm no wiz at economics or marketing or anything, but I would
almost guarantee that if Those In Power would reduce their
prices by 1/3 (33 percent), they would see a sales increase
which would be MORE than that....
Also, folks: Why is there such a ridiculous disparity between
the prices of cassettes and cds? It costs LESS to manufacture
a cd than a cassette, but they charge MORE for the friggin'
cd! (Correct me if I'm wrong!)
But I guess things could be worse, huh?
Sorry, I had to vent. (I'm digressing into my old ultra-
left tendencies...blah!) ;-)
Later!
Vince

Yeah, because people will pay more for the friggin' CD. That's how things
*work* in a free market.
(We're talking about CDs here, not food or some other life necessity, so I

Subject: (orb) NME : LX Interview Oct10, 1998
Another LX interview. Is it really worth it ? Bah...
Q : What song describes you best ?
A : 'Towers of dub' by us, because it has all the elements : ambient, dub,
manicness and samples. And humour.
Q : What is heaven ?
A : A path through hell.
Q : What is hell ?
A : It's a place on earth. Where ? In one's soul. Heaven is in your soul as
well; it depends on which path you want to make.
Q : What is your earliest memory ?
A : Having a piece of silver paper being taken out of my nose with a pair
of tweezers by my dad when I was about one.
Q : What is your greatest fear ?
A : Fear.
Q : What is your all-time hero ?
A : Colin Wilson. He writes books on fiction, fact, crime, sort of pre-X
Files mysteries from the 60's. He's written my favorite book, The
Philosopher's stone, which is about trepanning and using the brain to lever
itself into different dimensions, as opposed to using drugs.
Q : What's the worst trouble you've been in ?
A : A recent time was last week-end when I got arrested by the Spanish
police in Vigo for being an Ecstasy dealer with a mobile phone on the beach
the previous night. They picked me up in the middle of the gig. I was taken
away for about 5 hours and then brought back after they got a lawyer in to
sort it out. Otherwise I would've had to stay there all weekend. Thing is,
I wasn't even on the beach, and yet thay said they'd seen me there.
Q : Who was the first love of your life ?
A : Annette. We went out for nearly 6 years.
Q : What's your greatest talent ?
A : At the minute, DJing. I like the instant gratification- if you're shit,
the crowd'll let you know. But when they're happy, you're happy.
Q : Upon whom you most like to exact revenge ? Why ? How ?
A : Unprintable. I'd get sued. But you know who you are.
Q : What's your most treasured possession ?
A : My two terrapins. Fascinating creatures.
Q : What have you most regretted doing while drunk ?
A : Swinging from balcony to balcony, 20 floors up somewhere in Spain. Or
in Germany, when I set fire to a hotel door. I thought that would be the
easiest way in.
Q : What can you cook ?
A : Pastas, sauces - vegetarian food, really.
Q : What's the best piece of advice you've received ?
A : It's all in the mind.
Q : Can you read music ?
A : No.
Q : If you were invisible for a day, what would you do ?
A : I'm reading a comic at the moment called The Invisibles, and in it
there's a secret force of invisible people who go around protecting the
good from evil on Earth. Maybe I'd become one of them.
Q : What are your final 3 wishes ?
A : I'd have a big brandy, a spliff, and somewhere nice like Scotland to
scatter my ashes. My fourth wish before that would be to be a DJ in a hotel
foyer in outer space. It's just got to be done.

Indeed - there was actually some sort of class-action lawsuit against the
major CD manufacturers since CD production and packaging costs have fallen
from >$3 each when they were first introduced to <$.25 each now, yet
retail prices have risen by >30% in the same time period!
Does anyone know what became of this lawsuit?
Isn't it interesting how you can pay $16.99 for a new CD album at a mall
store, and only $3.99 for a CD single which has just as much music on it
when they both cost exactly the same amount of money to produce?
And then there are CD clubs, which end up only charging you between $2 and
$5 per CD when you take the membership deal into account! And it's often
the exact same CD you buy in the mall, although sometimes they are
manufactured by the CD club to decrease costs slightly...
In the US, we have to pay an average of $9-$10 for import singles, which
aparently cost the equivalent of $3-$4 (less than US CD singles) when
first released in the UK... Price gouging due to higher percieved value
perhaps?
It now costs a lot more to manufacture casettes than CDs even before the
casettes are recorded, yet prerecorded casettes retail for less than CDs.
What's even more interesting is that videotapes are much more complicated
internally and include a lot more and higher quality tape than audio
casettes, yet they cost significantly less!
Movies on videotape can be purchased for less than the cost of a CD which
has a shorter running length, and doesn't include an image!
There are obviously some marketing geniuses calculating exactly how much
money they can squeeze out of different types of consumers for each kind
of media by creating a false perception of high value in the mind of said
consumer!
Back to the original question:
For you East coasters, when I lived in NJ, Nobody Beats The Wiz had pretty
amazing prices on new CDs, and a decent selection, but that was a few
years ago.

If you want commodity items, try buying soybeans, corn or pork bellies.
I believe the concept is that you are purchasing the music, not the cd.
Otherwise just go out and buy a hunk of plastic for that $0.25. The only
way cd prices will come down is if people dont buy them at the current
prices. We know that prices could fall if there was a reason for that to
happen.
Of course its unfortunate when there are things that one wants to buy. But
thats what mp3's are for, isnt it?

Yeah, I never see new cd's for under $15 unless it's a blowout sale or
something.
Maybe it's because I'm on the East Coast, and near a couple of
metropolitan areas at that...
But I doubt it.

I'm curious, where in the US can you get *any* new CD for only $12 let
alone a limited 2 disk release?
Kim
In NYC we have a store called Discorama on w 4th st. and all new CD's are
9.99 and with a coupon from the NY Press, they are only 8.99. The newer
things are in limited quantities and you usually have to get there early on
TUESDAY to get them. I got my 2 CD UFORB there. ( a long time ago ). I got
AHEB single there recently for 5.00, but it was the last one. I bet there are
stores all over that have this stuff, but you just have to dig really deep.
There is a thrift shop here and all records are 1.00. When they get over
stocked, the stuff goes for 25 cents. This year some guy donated 7,000 12"
singles and albums to it. One day I got 4 orb 12"s for a dollar a piece. I
almost died. They were Blue Room, Perpetual Dawn (U.S.), Blue Room Promo (Pro
1009-1), and Assassin all in mint condition. (Please don't email me to sell
these.) -- -- - -- - - -- - - -- - - Chris in NYC - - - -- - -- -- - - -

Record shop. I received my limited edition "UFOrb" 3xLP and "A Huge

a virgin copy at that. I know what I'll be spinning during my ambient
set at IBIZA West tomorrow night.

Can anybody tell me where I can find it?
Thanks,

If you like the soft, less rhythmic side of the Orb, I would say it's a
must. If you prefer the heavy bassline, more of a melody side of the Orb,
you might not enjoy it as much.
