Just caught the thread in the middle, but I'm interested in checking

Nope didn't see it. Basically walked in the movie with the intent to
see a brain dead movie. Resulting analysis of characters and story
line reflect this quite well. ;)

Hello,
In the DJ world, a "trainspotter" is someone who is constantly looking
to see what record you're spinning. DJ's take great pride in obtaining the
rare grooves..and many times don't want their secrets let out. I guess a lot
of it comes with egos. But when you spend days digging in the crates for rare
grooves, you don't want lazy suckas stealing your beats.
And to the guy who thought "phat" was the "ebonic" spelling of "fat,"
you're tripping. It has nothing to do with ebonics. It's just a form slang
that stems from the hip hop culture. Just like I'm sure that back in your days
you used the hip slang for that era. For example: "This grass sure makes me
feel groovey." Or...."Cool it daddy O." So please refrain from mocking a form
of slang you don't use, or don't understand. Thanks...
Peace(universal slang)

I was at my dad's house last night, when that Volkswage commercial came
on. He thought it was "really neat".... I don't know if he was referring
to the color shifting, the music, or both.... I gave him a brief history
of the Orb and all.
BTW, why exactly DID they eliminate LeVar Burton's voice? HIS voice
sounded a lot better than whoever is doing it now.... I mean, he says
the exact same thing, for crying out loud.
AND, speaking of April Fools Day.... Does anyone have the email address
to Comedy Central??? (I don't have internet access, so I can't access
their home page.) The anticipated revealing of who Cartman's father is
was upstaged by the words, "APRIL FOOL!", and the ENTIRE show was
Terrance and Phillip--the two LEAST funny characters from South Park.
"Ohmygod! They killed my interest in South Park! You bastards!!!" ;)
Comedy Centrals gonna get majorly flamed over THIS one, I'm sure....

That's an absurd claim considering that ebonics/African American
Vernacular has a strong presence in hip hop culture. What aspect of hip
hop culture does your notion of slang stem from then, if not ebonic
lyrics?
> Just like I'm sure that back in your days you used the hip slang for that era. For example: "This grass sure makes me

I'm not sure what you mean by "back in your days". Perhaps your
referring to my late childhood & teens? If so, that would be the early
to mid 80's, when people were break dancing and "fresh" was used instead
of "phat."
>So please refrain from mocking a form of slang you don't use, or don't understand.
There is nothing to understand. Different words are being used for the
same concepts, except it's "dope" to employ some ridiculous spelling.

*'hem* I think they *are* spreading the gospel. Just not Christian
gospel.
See, there is for certain a theological bent to Orb's music, and the
theme of transformation out of the physical world and/or existence of
worlds in/around this one occurs multiple times (cf. o.o.b.e [noosphere,
the world of objective contents of thought], Earth (Gaia) [that lovely
piece about drinking wine of vineyards]).
Ryan continues:
> the orb has helped cure me of some really nasty dogma i'd had in
> my system...
A similar experience for me. As I was leaving my Christian viewpoint
(the Renunciation, I call it *laugh*), the Orb was one of many real
world confirmations that I was making the right choice by externalizing
in music and samples views that I was projecting.
Some examples of Orb's gospel:
The intro into Live '93s LFC is a wry raised eyebrow at the religion of
Science -- turning a man into part-machine is a solution to the problem
of inner pain. Ricky Lee Jones and the music of LFC is a more real way
of inner healing, using inner joy, memories and music. As for S.A.L.T,
it relates to 'millennial fever', and is an attack on the (largely
American led) fifteen-minute trends and the sell-your-soul attitude as
well as an allegory into the futility of Western society's rapacious
materialistic lifestyle *whew*. Orb's characteristic cryptic responses
to press requests fits into this as the telly/newspapers/magazines are
the rallying cry for the continued sapping of the earth's resources.
Albumwise, transformation/transmigration of this society is,
effectively, the release of tension from S.A.L.T into Toxygene. LX is
planting seeds of a spiritual rebellion, essentially . . . :)
If you're at all eschatological in your spiritual viewpoint (I certainly
am and I assume Mr. Patterson is), this kind of thing is very
attractive. Meld with this Orb's listenability and danceability and
you've got a tasty cocktail for the spirit (or entelechy, really, since
body/emotion are a large part of the effect :).

P.S. If you're thinking of responding saying "How can you say what Alex

[Sorry to post twice, but Ryan was so quick on the uptake that I had to
respond. Whereever necessary, you can substitute 'music' or 'orb's
music' for 'art']

Indeed.
<soapbox clatters to the floor>
Well, it has to do with art. Each piece of art has three components:
artist intention, audience response, and an elusive quality that is only
of the art piece itself and is detached from the artist & audience.
Now, as Frank Zappa put it, the most important part of art is the Frame:
it is the part that says where the art piece ends and the real world
begins. Once the artist "frames" his or her work, the intention of the
artist ceases to be a factor in the art piece itself. Actually, it's
*the* factor in the creation, but a piece changes in time after
creation, and the intent of the artist isn't a motivator for that
change. The only reason that artist intent would arise as a question
would be from (you guessed it) audience curiosity (response).
Now, since the art piece is framed, we have only two approaches. How
you and I personally react to one piece of art is one (very valid)
approach, but gets terribly complicated because of the varied sources of
emotional responses that art provokes. The other is a sort of
archaeological method -- look at the layers of what's going on, examine
then in the context of the piece itself, examine the piece in its
temporal context and to try and step between the artist and audience and
see what motivates them to reach toward one another. With practice, the
seeker may get a taste of the quality that is of the art piece alone,
and then can self-righteously expound on what he or she thinks :)
To concretize, let's take S.A.L.T. as an example: the context is in a
fully-realized continuous album by an experienced ambient/techno band.
However, the song itself is a departure from that band's typical style.
It's a hint to look on the flip-side of what's common for them. Since
Orb's usual subject matter is of paradise, celestial audio imagery and
travelling, looking at the stagnant baser aspects of earth might be a
good start.
The piece itself? Temporal context? Well, look around us: we've got all
this apocalyptic bullshit going on (ARMAGEDDON, coming soon to a theater
near you), people are still consuming like it's the eighties, pollution,
overpopulation, Paula Jones etc. etc. etc. That one's the easy part.
Getting between Alex and Orb fans is a bit more of a mind-bender,
though. There is something that separates Orb fans from those who are
garden-variety techno-hounds -- we're looking for the purple and red and
on fire, the bumping blue rooms and the ultraworld (well, beyond it,
actually). If not conciously (or spiritually), then in musical taste.
Alex happens to be a human being who is particularly talented at
conveying that particular impulse through music, and therein lies the
reach between artist and audience.
If you look at the whole of these concepts, ideally while listening to
the piece, well, you might come up with something similar to what I was
babbling about in the last message. Accepting the music as a portent to
spiritual transmigration, well, that's just me. I'm into that kind of
thing *laugh*
Peace,
Rob

To me, LX is a creative techno-dubber with a talent for "sonifying" the
surreal. Trancedentalist... ok; excessive reefer smoker... probably;
but spiritual rebel... that escapes me.

Subject: (orb) the orb audio archive experiment
<be prepared for a long post>
as some of you know, the orb audio archive has had problems...for a long
time. this was mainly due to server/ISP issues, and (sometimes) beyond our
control. anyway, those days are hopefully gone. you can now download most
of the songs formerly housed on the oaa, along with many new songs (some
that i made fresh, and many from Dan LeBoeuf's fine ftp site). you can
visit the site at: http://theorb.ml.org/mp3/ unfortunately we haven't
been able to update the html, so you won't be able to see that nice
interface you all know and love, but the songs are there. (for the record,
the pages are being worked on, and hopefully will be ready....sometime).
it's organized by album, so if you can't find what you're looking for,
check another directory. i was going to wait and tell people once the
pages are updated, but i continue to be deluged by mail from people
reporting problems with downloading mp3's from the oaa (although probably
most of them aren't on the list) so i wanted to let people download stuff
since it *is* available.
a brief sidenote for people who weren't around when the orb audio archive
actually existed; our goal through the site is providing rare/out-of-print
orb songs in mp3 format for people to download and enjoy. (also, if you
spot anything you don't think belongs there, please mail me and i will
remove it)
the server is hosted by an anonymous donator, who has given up several
hundred megs of space. hopefully this will allow us to expand even further
(if you have material that is not on the archive, and you have the ability
to make mp3's please mail me. we are especially looking for live bootleg
concerts). having been given this great amount of space has allowed us to
present these songs in a high-quality format, however this makes some of
the files quite large (a bit less than one megabyte per minute of music).
if you have a slow or unreliable connection, but still want songs from the
archive, i would suggest using a download tool, such as GetRight
(http://www.headlightsw.com/getright.html) which allows you to resume
failed downloads. this makes getting files such as the Patterns & Textures
soundtrack (over 46 megs) a bit easier.
this is already a huge post, so i will continue (so far, there have been
no Wedding Singer mentionings;) ... i have been hanging out a bit on EFNet
(IRC) in the channel #theorb i take no responsibility for the
conversation there (sometimes IRC gets a little rowdy), but i am an op so
complain and someone will cut it out. there aren't a whole lot of people
there, but if you want some orb conversation, that's a decent place to look.
i will say one more thing; i got my Spherical: tribute to the orb cd in
the mail yesterday. as people have said, the packaging rules, and the
music's pretty cool too. for 10 bux, it's definitely worth it.
thanks.
sergio.

A few people asked me for a track listing on the Depeche Mode World in
My Eyes: Mute LCDBONG20. I've been quite busy, so it's taken me a while
just to remember to bring it to work with me.
1. World in My Eyes: Dub in My Eyes by Francois Kevorkian
2. World in My Eyes: Mode to Joy by Jon Marsh
3. Happiest Girl: Pulsating Orbital Vocal mix by the Orb
4. Sea of Sin: Sensoria by Francois Kevorkian
5. World in My Eyes: Mayhem Mode by Jon Marsh
6. Happiest Girl: Jack Mix by Francois Kevorkian
The cover art for this is pretty lame. There's a picture in Auntie
Aubrey's Excursions..., but if you want a scan of it I can make one
available.

Don
