as far as i can remember, it was Youth and Greg Hunter, although there was a
mysterious member called 'Obi' who i thought might be lx, but i'm pretty sure
that it wasn't.
it WAS released on lx's short-lived 'AO Records' label, however. they also put
and album out, called 'Frozen Ants'.

So a while back I overheard my little sister's Chipmunks cd. Dave was
introducing the next song, "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." "And now folks,
for an old familiar favorite. It's a simple little sentimental song...."
It was then that I realized I had heard the line before. It turned out to
be the opening sample on Plateau ( Orbus Terrarum ). I've recognized a few
other samples, including Martin Luther King Jr. (Happy Birthday) on Live
93, and the Simpsons clip on the Morphology bootleg. I was just wondering
if anybody has figured out any other note-worthy samples.

I have a dubbed cassette copy of Aubrey Mixes (thanks to the generosity of
another list member, to whom I will be forever indebted ;) ), and I
noticed that the one song (It's NOT Spanish Castles in Space, at least I
don't think so...it's the second song on the tape he gave me, but I'm not
sure if it's the original song order) has a guitar sample from the
song, "She's in Parties," by Bauhaus... Specifically, it's the last
chord the guitar plays on the song, the one with the feedback/distortion.
I don't know how to describe it--anyone with that song (and it's the
one from the original album, NOT _Swing the Heartache_--I can't think of
the album's name right now...OH! It's called, _Burning From the Inside_--
it's too early in the morning right now....) who also has Aubrey who can
confirm that for me? The guitar sample plays several times in the song.
I'll have to check the name of the track about which I'm talking when
I get home tonight.
God, that last paragraph doesn't make a bit of sense, does it? I jsut
just re-read it. It's too early for me to think straight.... And I've
got a meeting in an hour...this should be good.... :/
Oh, anyone know where that "gibberish" sample from Perpetual Dawn comes
from? THAT'S the reason my wife hates it so much....
Hey--that "sentimental" sample is from The Chipmunks??? Is it David
Seville, by any chance? That's hilarious! It DOES kinda sound like
him, now that you mentioned it....

This is just a wild guess, but...
On Coldcut's "What's That Noise?" album, there is a sample of some
people speaking to a piano called Sparky. It is accompanied by some
goofy, cartoonesque music. I am assured by an older relative that the
sample is from a TV show called Sparky the Magic Piano (or something
similar).
Now, I haven't heard the sample in question, but wouldn't mind betting
that it is from the same source...

this sample is the intro to 'Towers of Dub' and is actually my fav part
of the song... but I believe that it's a recording done of a prank call to BBC
TV. The security guard has, of course, no idea who Hailie Selassie or Marcus
Garvey were.
Selassie was Emperor of Ethiopia during WWII and Garvey was a prominent
black separatist in America who advocated that all African-Americans should
return to Africa to rediscover their roots... he was later jailed for mail
fraud. Anyone have anything to add/correct on that? I honestly have no clue
what the connection could be between the two, if any... -gabe.

Here's a little excerpt from the Ultraworld site about a more orbscure
sample...
- -----------
* After rigorous touring across the UK, Europe and USA, Alex and Thrash
take a two month break in India. One day they took a trek to Gaya Park,
Nepal.
While following an elephant to the lavatory, Alex realized that the
sound of their bodily functions were interesting enough to be sampled
and does so. The "passing wind" sounds appear on the "U.F.Orb" album.
- ------------
Only one question...
why was LX following an elephant to the lavatory???

For a series of speculations on sources of Orb samples, try:

It's a bit out of date (1993) but has the Towers of Dub sample listed,
amongst others.

Hello Orbiting people,
I just joined the mailing list after reading some of the old
archives...glad to meet fellow Orb freaks out there. I just posted an ad on
Usenet about the PD and LFC cd singles. I have an extra copy of each to
spare if anyone wants them.
Looing forward to hearing opinions on Orb stuff!
Take care,
Jon

Isotank's web site also says they have the FFWD CD...They don't, though.
Apparently, they do not update their website very often, if at all.

Turns out I was wrong about the song on Aubrey which uses the sample
of the guitar from Bauhaus' "She's in Parties"--it IS Spanish Castles--
the Castles in Goa mix.
Again, the sample comes from the very end of "She's in Parties" (the
full version from _Burning from the Inside_, not the Peel Sessions--
_Swing the Heartache_), and is used several times in that version of
Spanish Castles....
Can anyone confirm this?

This has probably been discussed before, but it hasn't in the last two
months or so. To what other groups/people do you listen, outside the Orb?
Who do you rank near (or possibly ahead) of the Orb, music wise?
I like to place things thusly:
The Big Four: (no particular order)
1) Brian Eno
2) The Orb
3) Aphex Twin and aliases
4) Autechre
And on a slightly lower level:
Orbital, Meat Beat Manifesto, Future Sound of London, Global
Communication and Reload, E.A.R. (anything by Sonic Boom), Mu-ziq, Sun
Electric
And then:
Heavenly Music Corporation, Black Dog, Spacetime Continuum, Black Dog,
Higher Intelligence Agency, Biosphere, Tipsy
Stuff I used to like but think is pretty boring now:
Chemical Bros., Juno Reactor, Underworld, Eat Static
Hey, I'd like to find out about some more music so tell us yours.

Speaking of EBN - does anyone have an original of their "Commercial

copy of it right now :(

Subject: (orb) Re: Other Music
Well, other music I listen to (in the electronic field) include:
Jean-Michel Jarre (the undisputed master, IMHO)
Future Sound of London
Banco de Gaia
Tangerine Dream (during their association with the Virgin label, c. 1975
through 1981, although LeParc is quite, well, trememdous...later stuff
sucks--well, it's not BAD, but it's quite mediocre)
Vangelis
New Order
DEVO
Kitaro
David Arkenstone (GREAT music by which to read Clive Barker novels)
I'm not COMPLETELY a cyber-geek, however--I also enjoy the rip-roarin',
gee-tar twangin', venom spittin' sound of rockabilly...everything from
the late, great Carl Perkins, Elvis, and Roy Orbison, to the Cramps,
the Stray Cats, the Reverend Horton Heat, Three Blue Teardrops, Rocket
J, and others.
Gothic is quite often interesting--Bauhaus, Christian Death, Type-O
Negative (hey, c'mon, they're a trip!)... Actually, Dead Can Dance
is probably the most interesting of all--they've transcended the
pretentious posturings of the other Goths, and have actually made the
field progress somewhat....
Oh, I forgot to mention Art of Noise, Enigma, and Deep Forrest in
the electronics list. Moonshine puts out interesting dj mixes--stuff
from DJ Keoki, and Doc Martin, etc.
And then, of course, there are the two greatest artists of all time:
Frank Zappa, and the songwriting team of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker,
otherwise known as Steely Dan....
Iron Maiden was cool, as far as heavy metal is concerned, and Johnny
Cash is good in the country genre....
Oh, and how could I forget Pink Floyd???
