G'day,
A mate of mine in the UK is trying to get the two new Orb 'Toxygene' CD

where to score a copy , or can buy & send one to me, or has a copy for
sale/trade, please respond privately.
Thanks,
Geoff

we're presented with walls of dub layered on top of simple,
infectious rhythms. It's heavier than previous works - more
agressive, heart pounding freakishness at times. the tracks
typically start out with vocal samples - reiterating the theme of
mankinds ascent into apotheosis - rebirth by apocalyptic
annihilation into beings of pure energy - that transcend
physical existence.
the musical shapes LX and company conjuer forth are
both brilliant and frightening. they are forever
evolving and changing. bright chimes, soft
analogue whirls, electronic beeps and buzzes that
submerge underwater, resurface on the back side of
the moon and cross the event horizon.
and then there's rhythm, infectious beats that
blithley arrange themselves on the canvas. pure bliss.
like all great works, it takes some time to fully absorb.
it's compelling, it grabs you and shakes you about,
puts a bug in your ear and drags you through
the agony and ecstacy of existence. my words can't
do it justice, go out and submerge yourself in it.

Subject: (orb) More rare Orb CDs for sale/trade...
Date: 01 Mar 1997 16:24:49 -0800 (PST)
Thanks to everyone who's replied so far, I found the rest of the Orb stuff
that I don't need:
Blue Room - US 4-track Promo CD (actually, this includes the UFOrb album,
but the UFOrb CD skips, so I'm not counting it.)
An Introduction to Orb - US Promo only 4-track CD with sticker on cover
The Orb's Adventures... - US 1-disc version with different versions of
Perpetual Dawn and Star 6&789 that are otherwise only found on the
Perpetual Dawn CD5.
Plus all of the stuff I posted before:
Perpetual Dawn - UK CD5
Assassin - Full Single, buyer's choice of UK or German versions
Assassin - UK Promo in special package
Oxbow Lakes - UK CD5
The Orb's Adventures... - UK first release in special packaging
As before, I'm looking for the following Orb CDs in trade:
Aubrey Mixes: The Ultraworld Excursions
[any unofficial CDs other than Icons and Cyberworld]
Actually, I'm also looking for some other uncommon/import CDs by people
like FSOL, Orbital, KLF, and a few others. If you have any such CDs to
trade, please send me your list!
Thanks,

Speaking of which, I sent some e mails to Caroline asking why they don't
re-release this and got no reply. Too bad, because Caroline is usually
such a good lable (and Astralwerks especially) and probably a better choice
than Island, which seems prone to conduct witch hunts of artists who
utilize samples in their music (I'm thinking of Negativland).

Date: 01 Mar 1997 20:43:45 -0800
Just listening to the orb album and had to vent a little frustration. I
have a live tape of the orb playing this one song, the most incredible
song, with the phattest bassline, sounding like it was released when the
orb came out, but still sounding new as well. I loved this song. And
it turned out to be "secrets" from orblivion and what is on the viynl is
no where near what i heard live. No heavy, heavy bassline, just a
hollow part. Anyway, I am not saying it's a bad version(or maybe I am),
but for those who have nto heard it live(and I hope it is the same live)
you will enjoy it.
And I have a question for anyone. I have 'passage of time" live too,
but it has a completely different ending. The live one is great,
trancy, and sounds like UF Orb-type music. This is not what is on the
album and Im curious if anyone knows what this endi is or if it has even
been released.
Still a great album though.

Happy Day!!!!
I consider myself very lucky to be one of the few Americans with a copy
of *Orblivion*, and let me tell you it is well worth the price I paid.
I would have to say after my immediate first listen that my favorite cut
is *Ubiquity*, although I am sure that will change. It is just me or is
*S.A.L.T.* kinda spoooooooky...
I love the artwork...especailly the shot of Alex shaving. Does anyone
know if the molecular compound that is behind the Eiffel Tower is for
LSD or THC? Just a thought.
If you are unable to find it in your local area, fear not. I will be
creating a page for *Orblivion* in the *Chocolate Hills of Bohol*
Discography section, complete with track listing, artwork, yes...SONG
SAMPLES!!! I have been allowed more server space, so song samples for
most of the entries will be found in the near future. If you have yet
to visit Chocolate Hills:
http://holly.colostate.edu/~robinv/Chocolate/index.htm
is the NEW URL.
I hope to have my own humble review of the album, song for song, in the
news letter *Montagne D'Or, along with everything else I've mentioned by
the middle of the week.

Howdy folks,
I'm writing in my capacity as editor of a global trance magazine - title
still under wraps. Our first issue's slated to appear in May and will
feature an interview with TiP Records' Raja Ram; an equally mindblowing
interview with RTTS' Mark Allen, a knowledgable and
imaginative technology section featuring gear reviews; an essay on wave
modelling and a studio visit with Synchro. Other features include an
introduction to the Chinese healing/art form Qi Gong, with an interview
with Masters Ronger Shen and Yi Wu. Our book review section includes
reviews of HArdboiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki
Murakami, Red Earth & Pouring Rain by Vikram Chandra, David Toop's Ocean
of Sound, Michael Talbot's Holographic Universe, and so on. Video game
record reviews have begun and will be completed at the very end,
alongwith the latest gear reviews. The In Transit section features
reviews of big festivals, like RTTS Tsunami and Byron Bay Australia's
Beyond the Brain featuring Terrence McKenna, as well as party reviews
from Tokyo, New York, San Francisco, Tel Aviv, Goa, Amsterdam, Berlin,
etc. We have a new media section coming up. We have a Pharmacopedia
section kicking off with a nice, sober introduction to acid,
candyflipping, and acid and ketamine together, along with an excellent
bibliography. We're also expecting an excellent feature interview with
Bob Moog (who recently went back into business). We have lots of other
stuff in the works, for instance a piece on the drug laws of various
cities frequented by the trance traveller.
We'd love to talk with Alex Paterson about his perspective on dj'ing,
the evolution of the orb, music, and metasystemic paradigm shifts like the
one we're using to get
down and build this global dance culture that we call h_om_e. Do
you think he would be interested? The people at Konkrete Jungle and
THROB Records in NYC tell me he's djing at K.J. on March 3rd. If anyone
can suggest a possible means of contacting him about getting together
before or after the gig to chat about these topics or whatever else he'd
like to chat about, that would make me really happy!

Nah, but seriously, if any of da orblettes are listening, it would be great to
get together after the gig. I could bring down some CDs for ya all to listen
to which I am sure you have never heard! As you have been touring recently, I
could bring down the new Scorn Album or something and I have a serious Ambient
Industrial Collection, Most recently Throbbing Gristle's ambient album which was
the soundtrack to Derek Jarmans, "In the face of the rising sun" (or something
like that!) It kicks ass and as it is about 18 years old, it has to be the first
hard ambient album ever.

Regarding Danjel's letter of chances of being on the guest list - it
would be an honour and a privelidge to meet Alex Paterson and the others
for some autographs, but mainly to talk to him about "worldly" phenomena -
I've read interviews with him recently and his theories on the 2000 AD
calendar being innaccurate are very interesting - in relation to this
the Sphinx-Mayan-Altantean connection is even more intriguing - something
of which would be a great talking point with the master Alex himself.
Well, you never know, the Manchester Academy all-nighter could be my
opportunity!
Speak to you soon, Orbsters,

I have to agree.. when I first listened to Pomme Fritz it was such an
unexpected sound that I didn't buy it until last year. Now it ranks up there
with the first album for me. In fact, it was the testimonies of those on this
list that convinced me to check it out for the second time. As far as drugs go,
when you listen to this album, you don't need them (which is how I feel about
all of their music anyway). Please set aside some "alone time" with Pomme
Fritz!

I wasn't on the list when uforb came out, so I didn't see the reactions to the
release of uforb... I was really, really disappointed when uforb came out since
I loved the first one so much, and now I can only appreciate pieces of it
(oobe, towers of dub, blue room are excellent). I agree that some of it sounds
dated, which the others don't. In closing, I have to say that if you don't have
The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld, you are definitely missing some
great music.

THE TRUTH IS....
The Orb spend their weekends, smashed out of their
heads, making noises by turning on a drum machine & leaving it
running, recording everything, including mistakes.
They make no claims that the results of their efforts
can be considered music, or has any relevance to the outside
world, or contains any elements of a tune, or traces of
anything vaguely memorable.
The only positive thing I can say about The Orb is when
I'm off my cake on Monday nights I love it.

There seem to be some test pressings or bootlegs of this
floating around lately. I got one myself, along with
"A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain..." and "A Huge
Ever Growing Remix." Also another one called "Naked in
the Rain," which I was told is by The Orb but I can't find

Hi, my name is Nate Udel and I just brought Toxygene one by the Orb.
It has a guy saying, "Now wait a minute". Well the song doesn't wait and
shows that the Orb is Back.
Here are the following songs on Toxygene Part 1
1. Toxygene (Edit)
2. Toxygene (Way out West Begbie Mix)
3. Delta Mk11 (Dal Vivo a Romo)
4. Toxygene (kris Needs Up for a Fortnight Mix)
It's really good, and when will the Orb come out with the second
version of Toxygene, and there is another new import title by the orb called:
Orb: O.B.E Adventures, or something like that. Now, could it be an import
called:
Orb: O.O.B.E. Adventures?
If anyone of you Orb fans have any information, my email is:

ok... i was listening to orblivion... and then it hit me! all of a sudden
i knew the future of the orb.
as alex once said somewhere, the orb is probably gonna last about 12-14
years... and their career will be split right down the middle, starting
anew with orblivion. it was somehting like that. so anyway, let's
compare orblivion to adventures beyond the ultraworld. If we set them
equal as the first album for the orb in each of their two phases
(ultraworld being phase I and orblivion being phase II.. are you with
me?). both albums are similar in the sense that they range all over the
orb's capabilities, from ambient to poppish to dub to whatever.
The next step in phase I is u.f.orb, an excellent album which became very
much harder edge dance music than the first rather experimental album.
they stopped with the variety (for the most part) and stayed to one
basic formula (being a 4/4 beat). now, let's look at phase II - it seems
that the obvious way for the orb to go would be jungle (as hinted in
orblivion). i expect the next album to mainly stick to jungle rather
that house (jungle is a much more complex form of dance music) and to
kick ass (like u.f.orb). if they follow along strictly, there should be
some kinda fourty minute single version of one of the best tracks :)
...then following in sequence comes a live album. live 99? live at the
dawn of the new millenium when the ball drops? who knows... i just think
it's gonna happen.
...then the orb will take WWWAAAYYY to much acid and make something
resembling pomme fritz :) :) :) :) :)
...(in phase one, next comes orbvs terrarvm) as for the next step of
phase II, then andy hughes will leave and alex will start working with
another kru and will tone this album down a little bit because the last
one was so wacky.
well.. that's it. i'm sure you can all respond and tell me what a wacko i
am, but its all in the name of fun :)
see you in the ultraworld

Nope, nope, it's the Atomium located in Belgium. For US members, there's

In this case, it's not at all about drugs, it's about the end of the
civilization as we know it.
Of course, there's the Delta Mk II reference (to the drug) but otherwise, I
don't think this album is about drugs.
Am I the only one who can enjoy the Orb music without drugs ?
Anyway, this album is a diamond, especially Delta Mk II, Bedouin and Molten

Does anyone know if Fil Le Gonidec is French ? It sounds like it.

hi. i just changed my email address. so anyone trying to contact me, should

anyway, this is being sent off to multiple people & multiple mailing lists. so
i apoligize for being so impersonal, but, well, i'm too lazy to email everyone
i know, and write them all a nice little message to tell them i just changed my
addr..
i also apoligize for the mass amounts of wasted 1's and 0's this is going to
cause. oh well.
the one plus is that i won't lose half my mail anymore.. due to a horrible
connection, but that's another story.
you might notice that i'm using hotmail.com. yup, the situation's pretty
hurting. i never thought i'd stoop low enough to use free email. :> those
free email guys are probably reading this message right now, woohoo privacy. !
i won't be using this address for long, so probably within a few days or a few
weeks you'll get another one of these. i probably shouldn't have even bothered
writing this one..
wow.
anyway, those of you who don't know me, hate me, don't want to talk to me, want
to kill me, etc etc. just disregard this. thank you.

That's exactly what I wanted to say. My drugs are movies, music, sex and
Coke (you know, the Classic One).
And I just didn't wanted to start a drug/no-drug discussion : I want to
talk about the wonderful music LX, Andy, Thomas and Co are doing for us.
Had the Nine Inch Nails single already been released with the Orb remix ?
My advice : go see David Lynch's Lost Highway. It's as strange and eerie as
a good Orb track is.

Taken from an LX interview in Melody maker
"There's Delta Mk II, which is also the name of one of the tracks on the
album. Delta Mk II is a truth drug the CIA developed in the 60's. They
built this camp called Jonestown, which was filled entirely with mad
people. It was perceived as the base for a religious cult, which served as
a cover for the CIA to run covert operations.
It's nothing new really, the CIA have always done stuff like this, and
still are.
It's like back in the 50's, when they were experimenting on Amercian
soldiers with LSD.
There was a CIA acid test, where they'd give troops LSD and the one's who
cracked stayed at home, and the one's who remained sane, and saw God,
beauty or whatever, would go."

Greetings from Orblivion!!!
Just a quick note to call attention to some new things at Chocolate
Hills... I picked up my copy of *Orblivion*, and have added an entry
for it the the discography section. I have also included an entry for
*Toxygene*. Both include art work and relevant information, so if you
are interested in seeing what the gatefold for *Orblivion* or the cover
of *Toxygene #1* look like, then head on over and check them out. I
have also included other changes in the discography. I have also posted
my review of *Orblivion* in the Orb newsletter, Montagne D'Or. I had
received email from people saying that the Ort Art section was not
allowing them to view the larger images. That situation has now been
rectified. In addition, I have added a review of the album, as found at
NME.COM. I have also included a link to an advanced orders page at CD
NOW in case you anticipate problems finding *Orblivion* in your area.
As always, I am open to you comments, suggestions, and criticisms.
Special thanks to rachel@ironlight for her assistance and guidance, as I
have tried to make this site a little less taxing on you browser.

You can, for a small fee, get that pesky PAL format transferred to NTSC
at any video studio or the like...just check the yellow pages.
And they'll even eliminate the copy protection....

managed to find one yet. :-<
It was reviewed in the NME 'vibes' section as an Orb single, called 'Mandarin
Cream'. They seemed to think that it was an old orb track...duh!
The short write-up said:
"Dubbed-up relic from The Orb's past that still manages to make the listener
get up and check if the stereo is faulty. One for those DJ warm-up sets at that
time of the evening when everyone's too cool to dance."
Maybe the press sheet gives that impression, even though it's come out on

selling quickly so that if I can hop across the border this weekend I'll
pick up a pair in the flesh. Also, does anyone know if they'll come up
here, like they did last time I almost went to Seattle to get tickets? And
can I just say- this kicks ass! Not only will I get to see the Orb, I also
FINALLY get to see Jamiroquai, AND Man or Astroman is playing that month
too. Expensive, but glee- causing (I think I made a new verb). Wheee!

Hi
This is my first message to the list, but I've been

think I have the potential to make someone very happy!
I'm off to the all-nighter Orb gig tomorrow at Manchester

right? Well, due to a mate's unforeseen transport problems, I
may have two spare tickets to the gig to sell. Anyone
interested?
Send me a message - preferably with a phone number to speed
things up - if you're interested. I won't actually know for
certain until Saturday afternoon whether the tickets are
available, so it'll all be a bit rushed and hectic I'm
afraid. But, hey, it'll be worth a bit of hectic if you get
to go to the gig, right?!

I'm asking you guys. Does the newest Aphex Twin CD "Richard D James" come
with extra stuff added to it in Canada. I believe I heard something about it
being so short that the record company decided to add more to it just to
make it a "regular" length album.
I've already heard some of it on www.alstarmag.com. There's also Real Audio
samples of Orblivion at that site too. (there, a managed to add some Orb
related content to this message :)

it Chems or Orb? I was watching "EMPTY-V" last night and Kurt Loder was
talking about Stoned Temporary PopStar (STP) dates, Prodigy dates and
Chems dates. From his inflection, I infered that the Orb would be
opening up the show. Any takers on this one?

According to the recording at the Avalon in Chicago, Chemical
Brothers will be the special guests of ORB. So if this information
is correct, it would just go to show you cant trust MuckTV. BTW AMP
should be a station all of it's own. If you aggree mail mtv and let
them know. Maybe even start a petition, and mail it to them on a
daily basis, till they get so tired the make the AMP station!

Well, I just bought my *import* copy of Orblivion because I'm too
impatient to wait for the damned domestic to be released in Canada, and
I must say I'm very impressed. A few days back I believe I saw
someone say that it's similar to the Orb's older work....which is
definitely NOT true. Orblivion reminds me of Orbus Terrarum more than
anything else, with its 'dense' beats and 'complex' basslines, etc. S.A.L.T
(what does it stands for again?) is a masterpiece, and so is Delta MK II,
and well, pretty much the whole album. It's already one of my favourites.
But there's no way that the sound is like the more ambient sonic style
of U.F.ORB or Adventures...
It's funny how some people are taking all that 'mystic' stuff on SALT
seriously.....that business about the 6666 in barcodes and the lining up
of the planets or whatever in a cross...I also hear that Alex is taking
that stuff seriously too...
IF anybody cares, the rumour in Toronto is that the Chem Bros. are indeed
opening for the ORB on May 13th...and the Opera House is the unconfirmed
location...
That about does it for my 2 cents CDN (1.5 cents $US)

Okay, you Orbsters, I went to see the Orb on Friday at the Liverpool
University gig, from 9pm-2am.
Got in late so I don't know what the first DJ was like...
The Orb came on at about 11:30 and immediately begun with the
"Montagne d'Or" sample of the Constantinople man, except it went much
further than what is on that CD.
A few tracks later (which were more techno than anything else) they played
Asylum...followed by some good ambient-dub in betweens.
S.A.L.T. came on and was particularly evil, and eventually they finished off
with Toxygene - about 8-10 minutes long!
All in all, it was too much new, not enough old (in fact, not any old). I
found that both annoying and fustrating. They played for 1hr30mins but time
flew by!
Samples were good, but went on far too long, I thought, stopping and
starting the crowd like puppet-masters.
Overall : good, but nothing like Phoenix festival 1995

But what country are you in? Unbeknownst to many people is that the
UPC is NOT universal but varies by country...and that there's about 30
different types and versions of barcodes out there, from the original
1973 version to the new 2-dimentional barcodes. Like most
superstitious nonsense, it breaks down when you look at the specifics.
Is it a coincidence? Well, take at a look at the specs at
http://www.nbn.com/youcan/upc/barcode.html (for beginners) or at
http://www.adams1.com/pub/russadam/upccode.html and you'll see that
there's a technical reason why the 3 guard bars are there.
As for the bars representing 666: well, that's not even the proper way to
read numbers on an UPC, and the codes differ depending on what side the
number is on. I suppose if I looked hard enough I could find any number
combination I wanted to, though.
But if I'm wrong, think of the implications!! ooh..

greetings orbsters!
i found this yesterday, completely by accident - i had no idea it existed.
The Herb Garden Magazine, Issue 21, Vol 2 (price 2.50 UKP)
includes interview with LX, plus:
'The Herb Garden Presents....
mini Orblivion
Home Killing Is Taping Music'
cat no: ORB MC 4 (promo-only)
tracks:
Passing Of Time (Film Mix)
Toxygene (Ganga Kru Mix) NOT the mix from Future Music
Bedouin The Sheiks (Film Mix)
the 'film' mixes are both pretty mellow, ambient work-outs. the 'toxygene' mix
is a less hectic remix than the mix #2 from Future Music, but still pretty
uptempo drum 'n bass stylee...
the reason i didn't know about this is because The Herb Garden isn't a
particulary easy magazine to find, and only usually turns up in more
'underground' shops/record stores due to the topics it covers (work it out from
the title, boys and girls).
i picked up the only copy in the shop. there were no others. :-<
however, they are contactable by email at:
drugfool@herb-den.demon.co.uk
or by post at:
The Herb Garden
PO Box 34
Dewsbury
West Yorkshire
ENGLAND
WF13 4YX
they do a 'back-issue' mail order service, and i think that this was last
month's issue (judging by the articles, record and film reviews, etc), so it
may be about to be replaced. however, it might only be a quarterly magazine...
anyway, try getting in touch, and let them know that Smiley sent you... ;-)

Subject: (orb) A MEETING OF MINDS
Date: 18 Mar 1997 12:20:39 +0800
So, the subject title got your attention, eh? Well, this will grab it too.....
THE DAY I INTERVIEWED ALEX AND ANDY (and saw them play portsmnouth)
Last Thursday (13th March) I had the priveledge of interviewing Alex and
Andy for my show on NERVE FM (which has now reached the end of it's month
long run, by the way.....). After witnessing the most amazing version of
Passing of Time in the soundcheck, the Tour manager, Neil, ushered me into
the dressing room to meet the guys. Lounging on two small blue sofas, the
greeted me quite enthusiastically, telling me to pull up a chair. It was a
nice dressing room - a table with red table cloth and fruit bowl in the
corner, numerous chairs etc. I got out my Marantz cassette recorder and
microphone, prompting Alex to tell Andy to be on the ball (I don't think it
worked that well). The perils of analogue were discussed, briefly, before
we got started.
They were rather amusing, and seemed nice enough guys. They kept going off
at a tangent in the interview though ("Hull is the Las Vegas of the East
Coast" -Andy, "Sheffield is like Detrroit without the music scene" - Alex).
They did reveal that the problems with the release of ORBLIVION were
because of U2. They claim that they didn't want to clash with u2, who were
going to release POP last Autumn (last Fall, American readers). So they
scheduled orblivion for spring. Unfortunately, U2 changed the date and
everthing went pear shaped... or "It buggered it all up" as Andy said. They
also told me that they were going to win the F.A Cup. I ,of course said
"Chelsea, you mean?" and Alex replied "oh, and
helsea as well".
The whole bizarre episode is being chronicled in an article for a local
magazine. This will feature the obvious "Do you work well as a pair?" / "He
works well as an orange" / "You're a banana" routine.
The gig after was great.... but that'll be in a different message!

So, you have succesfully made it to Part Two of Matt Meets the Orb...the
Concert..
Well, things were kicked off by Alex Djing some mellow Drum 'n' Bass,
before Witchman played more Mad Jungle. Thomas Fehlmann Djed some cool
stuff, including hard dub. During Thomas's set, LX wandered round the
audience, watching thomas. Nobody seemed to realise who he was except me. I
chatted to him again, for a bit before he dissappeared.
The orb themselves were pretty damm good. They started with the Sportsnight
theme (popular Wednesday night sports highlights programme in UK) into a
monster version of Passing of Time. Can't remember what was next but ythey
played Secrets (great), the manic breakbeat of Delta Mk II, an unbeatable
version of Outlands, Asylum, S>A>L>T, A Beefed up Toxygene and Assasin (a
bit shite). They were probably others but I can't remember. YThe links
between tracks were great, and the samples fast and furious.
So there you go.......

Agreed! The first thing I did when I heard S.A.L.T. was to look at the
Barcode on Orblivion. The barcode of the domestic release has *no* 6's at
all.
What a great album though... "Secrets" is great.... the hidden track (which
I believe is "72" for whoever was asking) is also nice... A good solid

Subject: (orb) another ORB live review

Went to the Orb/Dreadzone allnighter in Manchester on Saturday.
As far as I remember they played :-
Outlands
Delta Mk II
Passing of Time
Pi
S.A.L.T.
Toxygene
and finished off with Assassin.
Julie Andrew's "Favourite Things (Favorite Things for the American readers)"
and Napoleon the 14th's "They're Coming to take me Away,Haa Haa" were
some of the amusing samples used.
The set only lasted for about 1 hour 20 minutes though.
Dreadzone were down for a three quarter hour set but they played for 1 hour.
It was the first time I had seen Orb live after waiting for 2 years.
They were quite good but just a little diappointing, probably due to the
sound system and poor sound balance.
The evening's Sound System was bass boomy with a rather harsh top range
and very little of the middle frequencies. It made some of the vocal samples
difficult to hear properly.
Also the mixing desk settings seemed to be badly set.,the Toxygene melodic
line barely
audible under the bouncy beat. I thought they were supposed to do
soundchecks
first ?
Dreadzone came off much better---maybe because they aren't as multi
layered as Orb.
They certainly rocked the place.
As for the evening's D.J ing,it was pathetic.
The evening supposedly kicked off with Alex D.Jing followed by Andy
Weatherall.All we got
was a sparse 4/4 drum rhythm sparsely accompanied and with little
variation---A.P. and A.W.
were indistinguishable.
It sounded like a tape or sequencer left running on and on.
Overall we quite enjoyed the evening and the crowd were friendly, but there
was hardly any dancing to the "D.J." stuff, more dancing to Orb and nearly
everyone
dancing to Dreadzone.
We always seem to get "rave" reviews of the live Orb shows on this list so
I'll probably get shot down in flames for this posting---------probably by
someone
who went to Manchester and heard it with different ears to mine.
My friend agreed with my sympathies and was even more critical of the
crummy
sound system than I was, which was a pity as the Orb would have benefitted
enormously with decent sound.
Barry.

I too have heard quite a bit about this supposed drum&bass influence
on orblivion, and i just have one thing to say 'where did you come up
with that shite?'
perhaps you were misled into thinking drum&bass is anything with
a non 4/4 beat, or thinking it actually means just anything with lots
of drums and bass, which it doesn't.
get your heads straightened out and realize the orb are above and beyond
these kinds of shite trends and the last thing they want to do is
just follow what's hot at the moment.
lx may spin d&b a bit these days, but its far from what he andy and
thomas produced on the album.
and don't even give me any crap about how s.a.l.t is d&b because i
will shoot you down pretty quickly =)

Could one of you Orb mailing list subscribers in the UK pick one up for

Cash conversion can be a drag so I would prefer either of the last 2 of my

Well, I'm back from the UK and I just thought that I would add a review
of the Norwich show I attended. As expected, it was a great show. All in
all, it was a lot more danceable than I had expected. Even "We're pastie
to be grill you" was danceable. Toxygene and Assasin versions were
awesome. LX and TF got the crowd into it (not that they had to), hopping
around to the beats on stage. One thing about the show did dissappoint
me though. First off, the length. They went on at around 10:30 and
walked off the stage at around 12. I loved the big metal fish suspended
over the stage.
I can't wait to see what they have in store for their US dates. I hope

You have to take into account the fact that there is no solid
'definition' of drum n' bass, and that it's a subjective opinion. For
example, what's the definition of ambient music? How about rock? Goth?
The Orb???
One person's drum n' bass may be another persons jungle, who knows?
Well, that's my opinion, anyway,

the people who called the later can prog rock were quite right, I got
the self-titled '79 release today, and there's some promising
Stockhausen approach to rock (kinda Eno-Velvet Underground-Stockhausen
mixture?) on the first track and a little on the second, the rest is
just junk.
I counted roughly the times I've listened to Orblivion the few days
since I've had it, I'm over 20 for sure! 20 full times through, that's
probably why I'm writing this inane post to the list, I've lost control
over basic functions! for instance, right when I got it, I headed
straight down to my basement, turned out all the lights, listened
straight through right between the speakers...by 'secrets' and the
tripped weather girl (the same as at the end of the remix project?), I
literally moaned from the intensity I was experiencing...and I don't do
drugs. what an album. some questions: there's a sample about peanut
butter sandwiches in passing of time...some words around it, does anyone
know what they are? A friend and I were debating LX's assertion that the
Orb was about buttocks...we're convinced it's much closer to peanut
butter sandwiches after all.
and you UK'ers seem to hear better than I some of the samples going on
in delta mk II...can't make many of them out, not like I'm sitting down
and rewinding it until I hear it, though. hey, why not hear the rest of
it instead, you know?
this is likely absolutely nothing, but what about that 'awed by
tradition' sample at the start of secrets? it rhymes with the 'law of
repetition' sample starting valley on the 96 peel sessions...keep
hearing the two against each other in my head...but maybe that's another
cue to go to bed. I'll stop wasting bandwidth. bye.

You know, I like drum n bass. Does this make me less of a person. Do the
people who despise drum n bass so much ever get shit for liking the orb.
Maybe you dont hear any influence, but I hear the break beats in there.
The dont dominate the song, but on DeltaMK there is a couple of breaks
that fade in and out that have a drum n bass-like sound. Or think about
it this way. Does the orb sound like Eno, do they sound like lee perry,
or what about orbital. No, they sound like the Orb by using various
styles aand morpphing them into their own unique style. I wouldnt say
that drum n bass is the be all to end all concerning electronic music,
but then again I would not put the orb in that spot either. There is
lots of good music, thats what you should have learned from lx and the
orb. it might be different considering i live in the us, maybe you guys
have this shit force feed to you by the media, clubs, other people, etc.
IF you hate it so much just ignore it, but dont come down on me for
having a different opinion.

Most folks were probably talking about Orblivion being D&Bish because the
band's live gigs last year featured a fair amount of D&Bish material, and at
the time the band said more than once that those shows were a fair reflection
of the direction they were taking on the album. I agree with the folks who
don't think that's the way it turned out, but I disagree with the folks who

Hello all ........
Anyone else out there at the gig on St. Paddy's night ??? It was
unbeleivable, I mean I've seen "The Orb" before but this was just a
revelation for me, the venue was much better, a smallish theatre with a
really intimate feel, and a really strange mix of a crowd, a friend of mine
came in and thought he was after going to a Metallica gig by accident !!!!
The stage setup was more simple aswell but very effective, not very many
lights but a great projection show on the stage.
When the Orb came out they came out screaming- Really kicking beats of
"Secrets" and then "Delta MK II", the crowd went ballistic, the live show
really went in for pounding beats- Andy Hughes really went mental,
Headbanging and basically jumping around, while LX just stood there and
looked busy. By the time "Toxygene" came on I was nearly drooling, and there
wasn't a single person ion the house that wasn't jumping around like a
headcase. The only track that was a bit of a let down was "S.A.L.T." it was
exactly the same live, as on the album, and also was the only track they
played that wasn't really heavy.
For anyone who is going to see them in the near future, all I can say is
you are in for a treat.
Someone was asking about merchandise- I bought an Orblivion T-Shirt for
L14 (Irish), which has the cover of the album on the front and orblivion
written on the back, This was probably the best T-shirt I saw, the other
ones were a "Toxgene" t-shirt and what looked like a "Auntie Aubreys....."
T-shirt, although I can't be sure.
I would have written this letter yesterday only I was in bed for most of
the day recovering, (My legs feeling like lead!!!!!!!).
B.T.W.- did anyone go to the extra show they did in Dublin ???
Later- Rob-

that they've added Asylum singles #1/#2 as being available for $12.49/ea.
excluding the $3.50 or so it'd take to deliver by post.
I'm curious if anyone knows what the availability on these are insofar as
being able to find them at semi-specialty shops in the US (meaning not
Camelot, etc.....) and if $12.49 is a good price or not. cdnow usually
is a lot more expensive on these things.

Orbiters, there is an Orblivion release party set
for the Liquid night at the club Manray, Saturday,
March 22, 10pm or so, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
Liquid Todd, a local DJ type, will be host and may
be DJ-ing that night, not sure. Campus/Manray is
two-clubs-in-one located near Central Square,
Cambridge. Liquid Saturdays have been marketed to
a mixed queer 18+ crowd. The Manray floor tends
a little more toward techno and alternative sounds
and the Campus floor tends to have more bouncy
house music, but it depends on who's the DJ.
Will let you know if any interesting promo stuff
get distributed. Friends went to the Aphex Twin
and Moby release parties. The Aphex night had
masks with the face of Richard from Richard D. James
album, but most people did not know what to make
of them. The Moby night had 2-track promo CDs with the
album and "clean" versions of 'That's When I Reach
For My Revolver'.

Hi there...
Just for those in the Baltimore/DC area who didn't know.....ORB is at the
9:30 Club in DC Saturday May 10....tickets are unfortunately
pricey....$23.25 I believe with all the charges....less at the door...it
probably won't sell out (Orbital didn't)....I'm going to first try and get
on the guest
list from my connections at my school newspaper.....anyway, that's the
news....I'm definitely going, no matter what...anybody want to meet up???
Later

I don't think the singles have actually been issued yet, but when they are I
assume they'll be available about as widely as "Toxygene" was. $12.49 strikes
me as very very expensive for UK singles; places like Ear/Rational will
probably be selling them for a little over nine bucks (and UK readers will no
doubt be able to find them for Lstg. 1.50 or so -- less than three dollars
American -- for the first week of release, as usual).

When trying to get information on obscure acts from Ticketmaster, it
helps not to use the band name, but give them the venue and the date.
Example: "I'm looking for two tickets to the Orb show at Chicago's
Aragon on April 26th". They'll be much more responsive. Tickets -are-
available for that show.
You can bet your bootus I'll be there. The first time I saw the Orb in '93
at Metro, I went with two of my friends. In 95 at the Riviera, there were
four of us. Now, in 97, looks like 8 of us are going. Andy, if you're
reading this, you can chalk up any increasing midwestern US sales of Orb
materials to my efforts... ;)
Oh yeah... I haven't commented on Orblivion yet. After having been mildly
dissapointed with the Orb's output over the last few years (except for being
blown away by the '95 show I went to), I'm really glad that they've come
out with an album as good as Orblivion. I keep thinking when I listen to
it that it's like a funnier, more f.u. System 7 album -- which I think is
high praise indeed. I can't wait to hear what they're doing with these
tracks live...

I don't post much or never at all, since I joined this list, but there are
three things I'd like to bring up that interested me. We seemed to have
determined that the sample in front of S.A.L.T. is erroneous, misinformed,
and/or outdated, but what about the other "fact!!" s that he tells us?
They are easily proven or misproven. The planets and the cross thing, the
tattooing thing, and most easily, Chernobyl translating to "Wormwood" and
Wormwood actually being in Revelations. I'm surre almost anyone who
listens to that sample wonders how much/little is true. Another thing,
related to the sample theme: Is there a list anywhere of known Orb samples?
I know that Delerium/Front Line Assembly/etc fans have a list of samples
collected, but I cannot recall a list for the Orb like that. Is the
S.A.L.T. sample from the movie Naked? I seem to remember that there was to
be long samplings from that movie in some song on this album. As to the
debate as to whether Orblivion has any drum-n-bass influences, I'd like to
add my two cents: What I've thought, and said, since I heard Orblivion was
that LX, or whoever, basically had enough drum-and-bass-ey-type beats to
say : "Yeah, we know drum-and-bass exists, but we're not gonna follow that
trend" That's the way I took it, anyway...Oh, before I end this letter, I
want to say: "shite" so I show how british I can be/act. So, shite shite
shite. Let's all say it together "SHITE!" sorry...

It's been confirmed: the ORB are playing at the WAREHOUSE on May 13, NOT
the Opera House. Whcih is too bad, really, because the Warehouse doesn't
have the best acoustics...opening act is unconfirmed, but the Chem Bros
are still mentioned in the rumours...
And don't bother looking for tickets yet....they'll probably go on sale

greetings, orbsters!
apologies in advance for the short message - i'll go into greater detail later
in the week, once i've managed to get some sleep! ;-)
the line up for the brixton all-nighter was:
9-10pm lx paterson
10-11 andy weatherall
11-11.30 witchman
11.45-12.30 dreadzone
12.30-1.30am thomas fehlmann
1.30-3.00 the orb
3.00-4.30 dj lewis
4.30-6.00 kris needs
comments and MY OWN opinions later this week...
********************************************************************************
i picked up the tangerine dream promo with the orb mix on friday. it's pretty
good, but i need to listen to it a few more times before giving a more detailed
'review'. i was surprised at how good the original version was, as i've never
been much of a TD fan - it's absolutely superb!
********************************************************************************
i also heard the orb's gary numan track last week - they've done 'cars' - and
it's absolutely brilliant...
it's a kind of remix AND cover version, 'cos they use some of his vocals, but
the music is all orb - it's really hard to describe, but lx slipped it into
his dj set on saturday night, and it seemed to go down well...
anyhoo, that's enough for know - i've still got to get through another seven
hours of work, and an hour-and-a-half trip home, b4 i can go back to bed! ;-)

Hi Orbies,
Imagine your worst nightmare and multiplie it with 1000. Maybe you're near
the feeling I got when last friday in London I found out at Stargreen
Boxoffice that something went wrong with my creditcardnumber and they
already sold the tickets I booked!!!!
The six of us went to London fridaymorning to do some shopping and go to The
Orb at Brixton Acadamy on saturdaynight. A couple of weeks ago I made a
reservation for six tickets at Stargreen Boxoffice by phone.
I gave my cardnumber twice and the girl on the phone replied it also twice
because I wanna make sure everything go well. SO friday afternoon I went to
get the tickets to found out something went wrong with it!!
Last week I also arranged a photopass via Island Records to do to a review
for Dutch Magazine Bassic Groove. Friday afternoon I spent a lot of time
calling and visiting Brixton Acadamy, Island Records, record shops and other
tickets agencies but it all tickets were sold and there were no returns. So,
fucking hell, no Orb concert for us!!!
The whole weekend was fun after all. Bought some very nice and rare Orb
things at Camden Town, visited a lot of pubs, enjoyed some nice Tanodoori
and Thai food and did lots of other things.
But hey, we should have been at Brixton Acadamy saturdaynight....

I just wanted to add that the skies in Arizona are very beautiful
indeed. Plus being here in phoenix, thepollution makes nice colors too.
I though about doing a video for LFC and showing all the smog, and car
bealching blue and purple smoke. But I'm too lazy.
But my point is, Ricky Lee is telling the truth.

If that's the same version that's on the Orbradio Realaudio broadcast on
the UK Orblivion site, I think it might be a Witchman remix. At least
that's what's etched into the 12" I have. Great breaks either way. Check

The Orblivion release party at Campus/ManRay, in
Cambridge, MA, USA, took place March 22, as part
of Liquid, Saturday queer techno night hosted by
Liquid Todd. The release party part of it consisted
of very big Orblivion poster with UK tour dates
listed at bottom and a drawing for ten copies
of "Orb vinyl" (which may be the album or something
else, did not say). The drawing was to take place
later. Other than that, the music was okay, with
the coolest sounding track being the club mix
of Way Out West's 'The Gift', very breakbeat and
a bunch of other things. Sounded like one of the
drum & bass mixes of Everything But The Girl,
at first. Did not hear any Orb.
Next week's release party is for the 'Insomnia'
single by Faithless. Copies of the CD single will
be given out to first 100 patrons.

ok, here we go...
well, the day started when we (me and nicki, my g/f) met up with sean from the
list, along with his g/f rachel, and his friend ian - who had all come from new
york for the gig. that's dedication for you....
we went up to camden, and i dragged everyone around a few record shops. sean
cleared them out of orb stuff, so he seemed pretty happy. ;-)
we then met up with JC (of this parish), and his g/f sophie - they had both
travelled over from paris. so, we adjourned to "the world's end" pub for a beer
or two, and the first official meeting of the international orb listers....! ;-)
we got down to brixton at about 8.30-8.45, and has to queue for a while, as the
doors didn't open 'til 9pm. we were all a bit concerned, 'cos none of us
actually had any tickets at that point - sean and jc had to collect them on the
way in at the box office, and me and nicki were supposed to be on the guest
list...
nico - really sorry to hear about the fuck-up with your tickets. you should
really give stargreen some shit over this....
anyway, we all got in ok. me and nicki were on the list - thankyou andy hughes,
you are indeed a gentleman and a top man!
the academy has a sloping floor, but most of it had been levelled off to make a
dance floor.
the music was already banging away when we got in - i only knew that it was lx
djing, 'cos i saw the running order backstage. i think most people had no idea
who it was, as all the djing was done offstage - faceless techno bollocks
indeed!
lx played a pretty good set, with a good variety of stuff. andy weatherall
played a blinding set - the place was starting to fill up pretty rapidly by
now, and before he had finished the dance floor was packed with people.
witchman was pretty good - just one guy with a bunch of sequencers, samplers
and stuff - drum 'n' bass stuff. i'd quite like to hear him on record, but i
don't think his music will change my life..
next up were dreadzone, who do absolutely nothing for me...nicki wanted to see
them, but decided against it after the first couple of songs, so we went up to
the guest bar for a drink, and a bit more space.
the guest bar was directly above the auditorium, and you could look through the
windows onto the scene below. there were a bunch of separate djs just for this
bar - there was a female dj who played some pretty good stuff, but i have no
idea who she was...
i bumped into andy weatherall in the bar, but didn't get a chance to talk to
him, although i did try - sorry ernie! :-<
anyway, i saw andy hughes in there, and spoke to him briefly. i'm amazed that
he knew who i was, and checked that i got in ok. he also asked after JC. the
upshot of the conversation was that andy was, quote 'shitting his pants',
unquote. he couldn't understand why, 'cos he'd been touring for two weeks...
i asked him how the manchester all-nighter went, and he thought it had gone
pretty well, but they'd pissed off the local press by cancelling all their
interviews that day...
he disappeared backstage soon after, so we went back down to have a listen to
thomas felhmann. not too impressed - he just appeared to be playing the same
song for about a hour... :-<
the orb came on at 1.30am precisely, to the strains of the 'sportsnight' theme
tune, as they had at the astoria in january.
they opened up with 'passing of time', 'secrets' and 'asylum'. other tracks
were, in no particular order...delta mkII, outlands, star 6 7 8 9, log of dead
wood, s.a.l.t, and finished up with toxygene.
it was a pretty good set, but i'm probably the wrong person to review it, as it
wasn't much different from the astoria set - which isn't surprising, as it
was a warm-up for this tour - but it went down VERY WELL with the packed
crowd. the set only lasted an hour an twenty minutes, and most people were
upset that they didn't come back on for an encore. i didn't think that the set
was as 'tight' as the astoria gig, but that's just a matter of opinion...
if you haven't seen the orb for a while, prepare yourself for a blinding show -
lights, projections, music and all!
after a long pause while the crowd were waiting for a encore, dj lewis came on
and carried on where thomas felhmann left off... :-< we went upstairs for a bit
of a sit down for a hour or so, before meeting up with the others, and leaving
about 4-4.30am.....
so in conclusion - if you haven't got your tickets yet, get 'em, 'cos you'll
miss a good night out.
and then.....we slept, and slept, and slept...
laters.

pps. sean - i hope you all got back to your hotel ok...

As far as accessing the Orbradio Realaudio broadcast from the UK website,
I've had no problems (except when I went straight to
www.orblivion.co.uk/sound/orbradio.ram. Guess they changed the permissions
so you can't download the .ra files) You may want to check the version of
your RA Player and make sure its at least version 3.
As for the Orb covering or remixing "Cars", can anyone confirm this? Are
you just assuming this was done by the Orb because Alex dropped it in his
set? I know they remixed "Jo The Waiter" but I can't seem to find any
info about a Cars remix. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough.

Yeah, friday afternoon I really don't know what to say to the girl behind
the counter because I was so pissed and amazed (in a very negative way).
After I explained I special came from Holland that weekend to visit The Orb
concert she told me she really, really want to sell me six tickets because
Stargreen make about =A32.5 a ticket!!!!
So after I checked the visa number she tried to contact and saw they wrote
down the wrong number I gave them some fucks and more of that, but hey that
still keep me from the six tickets I needed.
So I left feeling depressed to tell my five friends who were'n very happy
when I told them (understatement of the year, I think!)
We got the tickets for april 13th Amsterdam but London should have been the
place!
Nico
BTW we we're in Camden all saturday so maybe we met without knowing!
Bought most of the Orb stuff that day at a small place at Camden Lock market
at the other side of the road next to the Dingwall building. Was suprised to
find that much rare stuff on CD and vinyl in one place. Not only Orb but
also loads of rare other stuff from FSOL.

Great review you did, Smiley, as always !
I was slightly disappointed by the length of the Orb set (I remember the
Nimes gig in July 1995 where they played for 3 hours in an open arena (I
mean a real Roman arena !) so great, so ambient), but it was very very cool
to see them in the legendary Brixton Academy.
LX played "Always Returning" (Brian Eno) mixed with the Orb remix of Gary
Numan (can't wait the mid April release), which was a wonderful moment.
And I thought the other DJs sets surprisingly weren't very interesting,
especially the Thomas Fehlmann mix (or should I say it was the longest
boring techno single ever ?)
The group played a kick-ass Delta Mk II version, a Toxygene "all mixes
included" version... The music pieces were always filled with false ends,
just to start again and again.
I recognized a sample from their Mike Oldfield remix "Sentinel" between two
songs.
The light show was awesome, and the images from the background inventive.
And it was cool too to see so much merchandising like
A blue Toxygene tshirt
A sperm ovula Toxygene Tshirt
An auntie aubrey tshirt
an orblivion cover tshirt
an Orb mug
a grey Orb hat !
Disappointed that I hadn't talk to Andy, but I'm happy that he talked about
me with Smiley.
When you hear Orb in England, it's really different; seems that they belong
to there, with their humour, their bizarre creativity... Just listen to
"OObe" while walking near the Battersea Power Station, and you'll know what
I mean.
I'll go again to see them in Paris, hoping this time to talk to Andy.
It was also great to meet other guys from the list. I think my english
improved this week end by learning new expressions for me, like arse and to
mess his kecks !
Some news :
The Can album remix "Sacrilege" will be released in UK in May, 5
The Tangerine dream vs Orb remix has been already released (since March,
20) in US on CD and 12", according to the TD Official web site. The cover
is blue, both of the releases contain the remix and the original version of
the track.
TD apparently didn't like the 7"remix, and thay didn't really like the
attitude of the Orbsters. Check it out for more info on this page.
I've got to go bed.

to mosh to the orb? I suppose it could be done, but... yikes.
I assured her it wouldn't be a problem with this responsible ticketholder.
Also, kinda sucks that it's an 18+ show...especially odd when you consider
that we saw LX in November DJing for *Meat Beat*, which was an all ages
show. hmmm, doesn't compute. too bad, had about six or seven people that
would have gone with us and had a good time.
Let me know if you want to join up, we'll work something out.

I'm interested... I have a DiY psuedo label where I am basically
doing this with ambient/noise/industrial/techno material... people
send a song in, I make a comp/mixed tape of it and send them back a
'master' that they can dub and distribute as they please... I'd be
very interested in particapating in any other such comp....

Hiya all,
Can anyone give me there impression of the Orb track "Cocksville USA"? Is it
worth picking up the Axiom "Mysteries" CD for it? Also, on the other Axiom CD
it lists the Orb as having "contributed" to the album. Anyone know what the
extent of their contribution is, and if it's worth grabbing that disk as
well?

I realize this is an extremly ancient message I am replying to, but I very
much agree, in more of a vague sort of way.
Art simply triggers the greatness within each of us. A song, a painting, or
a keen fractal, there all just objects, but with the listener or viewer,
they become a emotional experience. I have noticed a little change of pace
also for the orb. I seem to recall quotes about keeping the orb faceless,
yet we seem to see a great deal of photos now of Andy and LX, even one
included in their gem 'Orblivion.'
I totally dig thr orb in a major way, but thats about it. I think you have
to come to the realization that the art is not the artist(s) themselves, but
their molements of glory.

I think this was dealt with a while ago, but anyways.
Cocksville IS good, and it has a real 'orbus terrarum' feel to it. It
starts off real slow, takes about 5 minutes to build up, and then
releases its beat amid sounds of Alex imitating a chicken. It's actually
quite funny (and you get _real_ weird stares from people when you listen
to it).
But would you buy the album just for the song? Well, it's a 2 CD set with
some of the best dub I've heard in a while, and when I first went to buy
it I didn't even know the Orb were involved. It was just a super-duper
added bonus.
So I'd recommend you buy Mysteries of Creation. Not only will you get
Cocksville USA but you'll also get an awesome compilation with the likes
of DJ Spooky, Bill Laswell and other greats.
And the only Orb contribution to the album I can remember is the Cocksville
USA track, but I may be wrong as I don't have the booklet with me. But I
don't remember seeing anything else.
Hope this helps.
James

Subject: (orb) london orblivion (us report)
Date: 26 Mar 1997 09:28:05 PST
Just got back, here's a long winded blabbering:
Rachel, Ian and I were running about London, stuck in traffic on the way to the
Tower Bridge because of some large protest proceeding its way down
the road. A couple of quick snaps and a spot of hot chocolate and
it was down to the Tube to meet the crew. Met up with Sir Smiley and
g/f Nikki in Victoria and proceeded down to Camden Town. Smiley was
the musical tour guide, merrily snatching Orb rarities out of
vinyl bins in many a shop like Willie Wonka in the chocolate factory.
Got Assassin 12", Tangerine Dream remix, YMO remix, System 7 Mircale
remix off Habib, and on and on... Then we met up with JC and
Sophie from Paris who had been on a spree of their own and
decided to compare notes at the World's End pub. After a few pints, a certain
Bush song came on the air and yes folks, Smiley *did* confess his secret passion
for the group. ;-) Sophie and JC recounted past Orb shows and we
all had a good time. Smiley drilled me on the "G'Day mate", "Thank ye Mate",
"Cheers Mate" rhetoric so I didn't appear to be too much of a
soggy american.
Next was a mad dash to get back to the hotel and meet up again with
everyone to go to Brixton. The rain was coming on fierce by this
time. In Brixton station, Smiley plucked the Herb Garden issue
with the Orb tape out of thin air into my surprised arms. Many
a bloke were selling tickets to the show (very sorry Nico about
that ticket mess, that's a bunch of shite to put up with, did you
try getting on the guestlist or scalp tickets?).
We settled into the Academy around 9pm and were greeted with LX's
djing, although no one probably knew it. It was some fantastic
drum n' bass that had me dancing in my mind. Fehlmann next with
some ambient noodling and the ever so humble Witchman who started his
set off with a looped "Witchman! Witchman!" chant.
Then it was Dreadzone. By this time things were getting quite packed so
we headed down front to check them out. They greeted the crowd
with a knock your socks off bass line that rumbled the ground
and launched into their unique style of reggae/drum n bass/whatever
you want to call it (I think Smiley called it shite :) set. Their
video was info overload, berzerkish, hectic freestyle images
that didn't stop pounding along with the music. Interesting.
Orb was next, I think, somewhere around 1:30 am and they opened
with the sports sample and then Passing of Time. Like Orblivion,
the music was *thick* with samples. A smorgasborg of sound
that ebbed and flowed through soft, ambient landscapes
and dancey drum n bassy terrain. Toxygene and Delta MK II
was infectious. Outlands/Star 6789 was another treat - different
without the live band. They also played Secrets, Asylum,
S.A.L.T. and Log of Deadwood. Also Pi, which was simply
whacked out and grand.
All in all I felt the Orb set was just blindingly brilliant, albeit
far too short. Loads of ambient segways and dancey bits.
The stage show is hard to describe - a tepee like metal structure with
two pods and 4-6 polygon screens for videos plus many lights projecting
triangles, circle clusters, etc. The video work was quite good, very trancey
fractals and the sort and high quality. I do wish they would have
encored, they left everyone in suspense for a while with no sound before DJ
Lewis came on.
I was surprised at how many people they packed into the academy. There
was the main hall, sloped, which was packed to the hilt with mad
dancers and chill outs who tried to sit through the entire show.
Out in the foyer they were selling shirts, hats and the sort.
Rachel picked up an orange rib tshirt for 18 pounds or so. All
along the walls up the stairway and in another hall were tons
of people sitting and talking. In one section of the upstairs
hall a DJ was spinning some jungle and people were getting a good dance
out of it.
After the show we stumbled out into a rainy London AM, nabbed some
cardboarded orb posters off a side rail and headed on a night bus
to Victoria Station. We grabbed a quick bite to eat. Smiley and Nikki
were eating this whacky fries and ketchup in a pita meal that looked mighty
tasty. We said our goodbyes and headed off in our own directions.
Smiley/Nikki to the rail, JC/Sophie for a walk to Waterloo to catch
their train, and we decided that it was time to take a taxi to
Russell Square given by a particularly nasty cab driver who didn't
care much for our sort. As we were driving past Hyde Park, we noticed
many people with heavy smiles and tired eyes emerging from the various
nightclubs.
A good time, well worth it. Seeing Orb in London had a certain homey
feel to it. The people were generally very friendly and chatty.
Thanks again go to Smiley, JC and group for a splendid time! Now
if you're up for the NY and DC shows on May 9,10, give me a yell ;-)
cheers,
sean

Here's the "official" statement from www.netstore.de/tadream/
(The official Tangerine Dream Home Page) as of March 19th
>TD and The Orb Remix
Lot┤s of rumours about the Orb remix - incl. a statement in the Future Sound
magazine where The Orb are explaining their disappointment as far as their
working relationship with TD is concerned. Edgar & Jerome did┤nt like their
Radio Edit Mix of Towards the Evening Star that's true. But both agreed to the
Club release of Towards the Evening Star, which will hit the shops and radio
stations in the U.S. by March 20th - so far so good! So what's wrong about a
mix which does not meet the approval by TD 100%? None of The Orb members did
EVER contact TD or tried to communicate directly - Edgar & Jerome like to talk
to musicans and not to business executives lawers or the staff members of
someone's office. Main reason to be in the business is the music itself.
The Mandarin Cream Remix of Towards the Evening Star will be printed
on a CD single and a 12" vinyl containing also the original version of
the song.<

I thought it was a pretty good track, and it can also be found on the
Altered Beats compilation CD on that same label. The disc itself is
worth buying, even without the Orb track. My 'impression' with it,
as it were, was that Cocksville U.S.A. sounds more like the stuff on
Orbvs Terrarvm more than any of the other albums. Beyond that, it's
like most Orb stuff--defying rational description. ;)

So I won a Toxygene single from the club Manray
release party for Orblivion, but will pick it
up this weekend. It's 12" vinyl, but I do not know
anything more about it.
Manray has a webpage at www.manrayclub.com, by the way.
Off topic, Orbital's InSides album is out with new
bonus disc with The Saint and Satan tracks on it.
If anyone out there knows the track listing for
that new bonus disk, please let me know. Thanks.
The Saint CD single has The Saint, The Box (Edit),
and The Sinner, three tracks at a low price, out
since last week.

3:42 Satan (industry standard)
7:09 Satan (live in nyc)
4:30 The Saint
10:41 The Sinner
7:43 Halcyon (live)
Note that "The Sinner" is longer here than on the single, and that the live
"Halcyon" (w/Bon Jovi/Belinda Carlisle samples) has not appeared anywhere else
to date.
(What the hell, the Orbital list spend half their time talking about The Orb
lately, why not return the favor . . . )

I own Altered Beats (dig that hip-hop!) and I can assure you that
Cocksville U.S.A. appears nowhere on this album! It would be rather hard
to miss given that Cocksville is 5 minutes longer that any of the fourteen
tracks that really are included. There are no songwriting credits for
Burton/Hughes/Needs/Paterson/Phillips, nor do any of them appear in the
"thank you" credits. I'm puzzled to what their actual involvement might be
on this album--it's really not their style. Maybe Cocksville is included
on the "best of" Axiom release, Illuminations.
