Hello from Paris, France.
I'm 24, male and what u can call an Orbed guy.
I didn't know the existence of the mailing list til the last week.
It took me 3 days to real all the digests (I learned many things); I tried
to contact 3 months ago Laslo (to thank him for his lists) but he just
received an e-mail with numbers (two times), I don't know why.
Anyway, I discovered The Orb by the remixes they did for Mike Oldfield.
After that, I tried Uforb, The adventures..., some remixes and I've got
more than 15 CDs of them, which is rather unusual in France : no one here
seems to know them.
When I go to techno shops, they say that the Orb is "too commercial" (they
like much better techno groups who have done one and only "song"...), and
when I go to Virgin Megastores and alike, It's hard to find something other
than Uforb or Pomme Fritz. But sometimes, I find something like "Luciana"
or Trance Europe Express 1 & 4.
I have FFWD because I found it in NYC : never seen it in France.

1 .I plan to go to London to find some gems (like the first "Assassin"
single) next month. Any good adresses ?

2. Any Orb French fan in Paris ? My friends hate the ambient, only my
girlfriend appreciates it (she started by AON's Ambient Collection, with
good old LX DJing). E-Mail personnally. Are they only US & UK Orb fans ?

3. I've seen The Orb twice in 1995: in Paris May 19th (inside), in Nimes
August 12th (outside, in a real Roman Arena).And I danced in Avignon (South
of France) in a rave where LX mixed (on July 14th 1994). IMHO, it was every
time an amazing experience. If any is interested, I can try to review these
concerts.

4. My little contribution to the Orb news : in France, Pomme Fritz had its
back cover entirely in French (it's quite unique; usually, we have the same
versions as the Europe and the States, in English).

Why did they do that ? Who did that ? Does LX and Thrash know that ?

Before that, u had to buy imports.

I'll be back soon to tell u some hints, facts and news from the Froggie. I
have some ideas for the samples used for some songs.

    I'll I can make out is one word: "...robots..."

They performed in France last three years with succes.
So their must be lots of people who know The Orb.

Yes, yes
Go to Berwick Street in Soho, Londons music paradise.

First try Reckless Records. Loads of second hand stuff but lots of rarities,
promos, testpressings and other rare stuff. Very, very cheap prices!

After that go to Sister Ray. All new stuff and a huge section of Orb stuff.
Rarities and hard to find stuff. Prices are sometimes fucking high, so watch
out!
They put very rare items like videos not in the sections so you have to ask.
Not to enthousiast because the price will go up.

And than go to Notting Hill Gate for Music and Video Exchange. They
specialize in Orb and they really got some rare stuff and reasonable prices.

NO!!!! I'm from Holland but got almost every rare item from London.

Because they went to Island they got a better distribution.
I think Live 93 also got an French release?

That's about all I can make out as well, but the "voice" sounds a lot
like one of those cyborg Cylons from the 1970's science fiction TV show
"Battlestar Galactica" -- only slower.  It may not be hard at all to get
this effect with a vocoder, however, so it might not be a sample from
that show....

The Bandulu remix of "U.F.Orb" is pretty good, IMO -- relatively hard
trance that incorportates significant bits of the original.  The first
half of the _Assassin_ single (on Big Life) isn't the best buy, though;
the German release of _Assassin_ on Logic combined both halves of the
single (5 tracks...see discography).

names on the French release of Pomme fritz. They're
almost completely different to the English ones.

Tout est beau = Alles ist schoen

But that's about it!

Oh, BTW I got a letter from the Orb mailing list
the other day, and among other things it mentioned
that the new Orb album should be released around
August/ Spetember time. Only a few months... Well
half a year actually :(

I've seen that in many reviews ("this album is a gem.")
Never heard the first Assassin Cd5, but I enjoyed so much the second one
(with the Chocolate Hills of Bohol remix. I recognized a sample of
Kraftwerk's "Kling Klang" (from "2") at the very beginning of this mix)
that I can't wait to have the first one.
BTW, I can't have access to your homepage, Kathy. Is my browser wrong ?

When I saw The Orb in Paris and Nimes, it was in a rave party, it was not
really sold as an Orb concert.
It was announced as a rave (especially in Borealis's Nimes) with live acts.
In Nimes, we had also Underworld, but we left during their live act (I
thought it sucked, but I really enjoy their remixes for Bjork and William
Orbit).
In Nimes, not everybody was pleased by the ambient treatments of LX & Co,
they wanted hardcore techno. But it was such a night !
In New Music Express (on cover : PULP), they announced that Thrash will
play bass on an Ep but I didn't remember the name of the group.
Sorry...
Live 93 was officially released in France after Pomme Fritz and Orbus
Terrarrum (as I remember), but it was easy to find it on imports.
Does anybody know if LX will DJ from March 28th to April 5th in London (or
UK) ? I'll be around.
The S7 album is really cool : I love Davy's Jones Locker.

another lurker I'm afraid, But I do agree .
I have "Davy jones' locker " echoing around inside my head quite a lot
at the moment, did they use Page and Plant for the sample?? quite
recent, hmmm.
the only downside is that some of the out and out techno-base does go
on a little bit.
Speaking of live Orb I recently came across a bootleg of Alex mixing
at a Longleat party in '93, at first I thought it was a bit dubious,
but it is most certainly him and some of the mixes are crucial ,
has anyone else come across this because it would be nice to ID it up
as I've not found it on any of their other releases-official or
unofficial. for example he uses a jungle breakbeat to extremeley good effect over a
simple groove and some of the usual samples-anyone heard the one abut
"one day there's gonna be supergroupies" in a similar vein to LFC
HELP!

track just before the start of The Happy Happy Joy Joy Song in Nimes and
Paris, which was amazing. And he used strange loops and samples (cars,
planes) in a rhythm which I first thought it was 'undanceable'.
Or anyone knows the names of some tracks he use to mix ?

times. I listened again yesterday just to see WHY it hadn't re-entered my coveted
cd player. It's the stinking vocals on it. That's why I don't like it, the songs
are too cheesy. The orb track is nice (track 2) but it still has too much of a
rave scene essence to it, which I don't like much any more. Ah well. I've got my
eat static and orb and delerium and ...

it's in a different format then American (I think it's called pal or something)
I learned the hard way too, don't buy videos while your in London, if your from
America... However, there are places that will convert it to American VHS if you
really want it... If it's that big of deal we have a VCR that can place all
video formats, I could record it over onto vhs if you mail it to me or
something...

  yes, there are  ways to convert international vhs formats.
there are vcr's that will play all international formats. there are
places you can go to get it done, especially if you are in a big city, or
at a university. to buy the equipment yourself would be very expensive.
check the directory for "video services" or the like...hope this helps

No -- to date the only officially released Orb vid is the live Adventures
Beyond The Ultraworld - Patterns And Textures video, and that was released
in both PAL and NTSC versions for export.

it kindof sounds like "freakazoids, robots, please report to the dancefloor"
from "freakazoid" by midnight star. i'm not 100% sure tho.

Well, Delerium are Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber from Front Line Assembly.
Their early stuff sounds like Skinny Puppy rip offs, (gee, wonder why?)
and their latter stuff (OTHER than Semantic Spaces, which sounds like Enigma)
is more ambient, textural and foreboding.
I haven't been to a rave in forever. They became commercial and their cool
'underground' essence was lost. They began to advertise for them, and that was
wack. They were cool back in the day because you wouldn't know about them till the
day they occurred.

He was equally wonderful at the Philadelphia show last May (I think it was
May). Spun for about 4 hours before their actual performance which in itself
was about 4-5 hours long. What a nice lil night...

Delete tracks 5 through 10 and you have a *brilliant* album.  The production,
the programming, the mixing...it's got some of the most fantastic rhythm
tracks I've ever heard.  And Derrick May's contributions are not to be
missed.  Too bad they had to include those awful vocal tracks.  They're
actually not badly done, really, just completely not my style....

I'm looking forward to _Power of 7_...I hope Dave Steinhart at Ear/Rational
can get this.  BTW, has anyone found the single, _Interstate_?  Any
reactions?  Dave?

Well, I think the beats sound really dated and straightforward, nothing fantastic
about them. And deleting 5 out of 10 tracks on your cd leaves you with an extended
single, nothing more. Ack.

"Oxygene Trance Remixes" on CD.
Not listened to yet, but maybe they are Orb Remixes...
Anyway, I have already the 7 Pink Floyd Trance Remixes and except "Animals"
which really SUCKS, the other ones are quite enjoyable.
Did anybody really see the Wall and Obscured by Clouds trance remixes ?
I only found Meddle, Atom heart mother (my favorites), DSOTMoon, WYWHere,
AMLOfReason, The division bell, Animals.
A record dealer told me that Steve Hillage told him that he worked with
LX&Co for The Trance Remixes.
Did anybody see a boot of an OrbLive 95' show ?

    Even the beats on Sunburst?  Christ, portions of Sunburst have the most
beautifully multilayered beats I've heard.  The mix on the UK System 7 album
is cooler, as the beat builds throughout the track, and the track begins
with a hauntingly beautiful vocal sample.  Sunburst doesn't sound dated to
me in the slightest, it's still one of my favorite tracks of all time.

    But a damned good single.  Keep in mind that System 7 learned from their

I know...fuckin Trocodero's always like that, tho... it's a pretty cool
feeling when you've got these 30 foot high bass speakers that beat the shit
out of you while you can watch the man with the bass on his back...

Mark Perry made an excellent point in the Maker when he claimed : "If we'd
have had a Massive Attack, Goldie and Josh Wink in '76 we wouldn't have
needed punk.
My main argument against early punk was that it still used the same tools -
guitar, bass and drums. If we'd have rejected those in 1976, we really
would have changed the face of the music business."
Spot on. But in 1996 techno has almost established its own orthodoxy. The
white-label route is what the independant single is to rock. The 808 is now
as commonplace as the guitar and much of the music is merely formulaic.
Breathtaking idiosyncratic visions can be found (Dave Clarke, Andrea Parker
and the perennial Orbital currently spring to mind), but it's getting
harder to seek them out. Added to that is the predictable slew of the same
DJs in the same standard clubs and the disturbing drift of various shiny
techno artists back to their grubby, pub-rock roots. One press release sent
to me recently from a "name" techno act proclaimed "...are a live band,
featuring real instruments".
Jesus, talk about abandoning the point.
Some people are still tampering with the rules and treating consumers with
intelligence.
In The End, Mr C's club, I'm delighted to discover the bar staff dressed as
space mechanics and an attendant in the toilets dispensing free upmarket
fragrances. I cant find the stage, but that's because there isnt one -
conventional stardom is sooo old-fashioned. Instead, I discover the "band"
in the DJ box, playing instruments as diverse as the CD player and the
(yep) glissando guitar.
System 7 include arch-hippy Steve Hillage, once the b=EAte-noire of punk roc=
k
and now exploring Detroit-inspired trance while the Pistols are reforming.
Ironic ? Not that much.
Hillage was a hopeless, 24-hour guitar soloing pot-head pixie with Gong,
but he invented The Orb with '78 ambient "Rainbow Dome Musick", then
produced the early, Europhile, seminal Simple Minds.
Challenging music forms out of reaction : now fully volte-face, Hillage is
at war with his past.
Maybe that is why "Power of 7"/"Hanger 84" sounds so breakneck, so angry
and restless, 5 years into this outfit's lifespan."Desir" fractures into a
myriad of possibilities, or maybe a pavement-pounder just formed a group.
Dark and unsettling, the rhythm is a mystery, opening its own door before
Hillage settles on an oceanic link into new single, "Interstate". A snatch
of Neu's "Hallogallo" is used in the chassis, around which Hillage
constructs a sleek and futuristic time-travel machine, Connie Plank
transported alongside Derrick May. It's awesome, and although the sets
lasts only 25 minutes, the echoes resonate well beyond the morning.

i happened to bump into LX & Andy Falconer wandering around outside after
the show trying to figure out which lot I parked in...nice guys...wish I had
had some herb to offer or something...haven't been in the balcony at the
troc yet (not quite old enough..aw hell), but it wouldd've been nice to be
able to sit on something soft sometime during that 8 hours or so...

Apparently, there are not, as the Pink Floyd trance remixes are not by LX&co.
Anyway, IMO, I could recommend you to buy "Meddle", "Atom Heart mother" and

i spoke with lx after the dc show from that tour. i was up front, and, after
the show ended, i asked their bassist if he was using a korg synthbass, and
he invited me up onstage to poke around. it was pretty fuckin' cool just to
look around at their setup, but then lx came out with who i think was kris
needs... they're a spiffy bunch. :)

Interestingly, Alex was talking about Kris in an interview with Orbit magazine
last year sometime about their split, and he said something about Kris'
varous names and that he (Kris) doesn't like it if you call him "Trash."
The way he put it, though, made it sound like he was being derogatory.

Some accounts of the split made it seem that it was at least somewhat
amicable and that they could maybe collaborate on something in the future,
but Alex's tone in that interview (and others) makes this seem doubtful.
Guess time will tell....

Even that's between long sets of soggy mass-produced r&b.  I think the
only techno video I've seen on mtv was something by the shamen...
During their coverage of woodstock ii, I don't even remember them talking
about the orb, only that there was a "mini-rave" of sorts.  Does anyone
recall if they did give them any coverage other than a 3-second blip flick?

   Omni Trio is an excellent drum and bass group. you are talking about a
whole different realm of (dance) music. most of their material has come
out on the Moving Shadow label, who specialize in breakbeat. there are
many jungle artists out there who produce what some call
"intelligent/listening/spacey/Ambient/etc..." jungle. check out the Looking
Good or
Good Looking record labels, both put out tunes produced by the *one and
only* ltj bukem. those of you who like to go on musical trips, and since
you are on this list i assume you do, check out one of ltj bukem's mixed
tapes.

were in a legal battle with Big Life. It is, supposedly,
a remix of a YMO song. I like it.

This ^^^ should be interesting.  The only bit of gear I recognized was a
Roland S-760 sampler with an attached monitor that Nick Burton (drums) was
triggering somehow.  Andy Huges manned some big Yamaha console, and Alex
tweaked the knobs on several guitar pedal effects things set up near the
turntable decks.  As I understand it, much of the music was on DAT to start
off with...maybe they had separate audio tracks recorded for different
"songs," and these were then mixed live by Andy while Alex spun records
& made other noises over top, and Nick Burton and Simon Philips did their
thing along with all of it....

When I saw them in DC last year, Alex also had a keyboard above his
turntables.  It was just a midi controller that was (I assume) MIDIed to the
two AKAI S1000s that were in his rack.  He also had a few Evantide Ultra
Harmonizers.  They did have DATs.  Actually, they had 3 ADATs (8 track
DATs).  I assume that Andy was controlling what was coming off of these with
the board.  He also had a monster rack of FX which I also assume he was
patching into the board real time.  He made that guy in the Stereo MCs with
his little 16 channel Mackie look like a big idiot!  I have a S-760 and I'm
interested in Nick's setup.  If anyone has anymore info on it, I'd be psyched.

yes, the s-760 was one thing they had. there also was:
a few alesis/dbx effects on the rack
a huge mackie mixer
an oberheim ob-mx
some kind of yamaha synth
e-mu e-64
& some other stuff. this is all from memory, as i've lost my notes on it. :)

I know there was recently talk about some of the Orb bootlegs on here a
couple weeks back, but I only yesterday found a copy of _The Pulsating
Sound of Orb_ at a shop and thought it looked interesting.  I didn't get
it because I've been after _Dipping Into the Cyberworld_ as my next
boot purchase, but I'm wondering what people think of _Pulsating Sound_.

It seems that the two versions of "A Huge Evergrowing..." at the end of
the CD aren't live like the other tracks but are "remixes" (according to
the bootleg discography).  Are they just the officially-available mixes
("loving u" from their _Compactdisc_ single, and "orbital dance mix" from
the _Compactdisco_ single), or are they something new?  What about the
sound quality for the live trax?

Any help is much appreciated!

This week-end, I discovered a remix from the orb that I didn't knew yet. It is on a double CD from "Pop will eat itself", the (in)famous british group, called "Two fingers my friends" which features re-mixes of their work by a lot of interesting parties (to name a few: The orb/Jah Wobble/the Krupps/Apollo 440/Drum Club/...). Although the Orb's contribution is not the best one (IMHO), this is quite a good deconstruction exercise...

Yes! Where's the original version of 'Home' in this remix???

Don't get me wrong I love this track but it seems like it's just an Orb
track they wanted to release and then just used the drums from the PWEI
song for the last 30 seconds or so of the song, I can't really see any
remixing.

Yes, I have

IMHO it's one of the best mixes The Orb ever made. Compare it with Towers of
Dub and Perpetual Dawn. Heavy dub, strange voices and that mindblowing rythm.
Every time I put this one on people go really crazy. From all the Orb
records I play in my set The Blue Room and this one got a lot attention and
people coming to me asking from wich CD this one come.

BTW The remix album from Pop Will Eat Itself came a couple of months ago.
Get this one, not only for The Orb mix but their are loads of good mixes on it.
Listen to that beatiful Higher Intelligence Agency mix also.

While I like it, i'm not ecstatic over it.  I like the remix of
Yello better, though still like the dubby & melodic mixes best
(ie. Satellite Serenade, Pato Banton,KLF...).  Of the PWEI
remixes I think Youth's is the best.

1. Yoko Ono.  I've always wanted to hear an Orb remix of
any of her back catalog.  Her new remix album isn't bad,
even if there isn't any Orb remix on it.

2. Philip Glass: anything from Mishima, Thin Blue Line or Koyaanisqatsi.

3. Echo & the bunnymen: The killing moon: could be quite cool
if they did one of those ambient dub melodic treatments....

4. Yazoo: I before E except after C, Winter Kills or In my Room

5. David Bowie: anything from "Heroes"

6. King Sunny Ade: Synchro System

I do not agree at this one. I find more from the original song in it than
only the last 30 seconds or so. But isn't that what's remixing is all about
at the moment. Listen to the remixes Aphex Twin or U-zig made. You're lucky
to find 30 seconds from the original.
I've loads of remixes The Orb made where they keep it more to the original
(listen to the mix they made from Dave Stewart's Lily was Here or Primals
Scream's Higher Than The Sun).

The remix is called Higher than The Orb and is one of my favorites (the
original is too).

Yesterday I found _Icons of the Orb_ in a small CD shop.  Great CD with
great mixes on it.  But the question is (especially for these orbies who
also own _Icons_) if all _Icons_ have an extra undocumented 10th track (its
length is 00:45 and total running time is 73:28 instead of 72:38, as it is
written on a cover of CD) or my bootleg is only "a bootleg" of a bootleg?
This "extra" track is an excerpt of a song about "a mountain in Virginia".
Doesn't seem that Orb could touch this song...  But _No Fun_ is not in the
style of the Orb, also.

Any comments?

limited edition double disc that had a full extra discs worth of remixes,
including another great remix by TGU. nothing else by the orb, though. and of
course, the double is gone. as in, sold out. glad i got my copy last march. oh

Hi Orbies,

Don't get wild about MTV Europe because it's not that great. It's mostly
Michael Jackson, Madonna and Prince showing and a lot of that Euro shit like
2 Unlimited, 2 Brothers on the fourth flour and more and more and more of
that shit.

Sometimes there's something worthwhile watching but when you have to watch
24 hours a day to find an item you like, no thank you. Biggest problem is
that MTV supposed to be for everybody so it's so fucking polite. They're so
scared to show something that offends people, it's disgusting friendly for
everybody from 0 - 80 years old.

The only programs showing something nice now and then are Party Zone and
Chill-Out Zone. But you get the same tracks for a couple of weeks and 99% of
it is Euro house and the same old rave shit.

And about CD's, videos and T-shirts. In Holland there aren't many places
selling good stuff either. So almost all the stuff I want I get from the UK
via mailorder, In London their are some very good stores with loads of good
stuff in stock.

BET has a cheesy techno show, if you're into a lot of lyrics (ie, simply
red)...  I don't enjoy it but am thankful that BET does put forth some
effort...

the local record shop I visit has orb posters, and does carry a lot of
orb stuff on vinyl.  Discwise, it's like any other music shop: only two
cds (terrarum and live 93).  They also have some prodigy stuff...

There're some fine Orb remixes on it and some of them are really hard to
finf on original pressing.
Sound quality is good so when you want to make your Orb collection more
complete I say get this one.
It has some very good Japanese remixes on it like two very good YMO remixes,
that beautiful Satellite Serenade mix and a hard to find remix for Hosono
Haruomi called Laughter Meditation.

It should be not to expensive, about 10 pounds so that must not be the problem.

I just got a new copy of Morphology and the sound quality is a bit
disturbing...it seems like it isn't balanced too wel... too much volume
coming from the left channel....

Doesn't sound like the _Morphology_ I've got...no "is this really the orb?"
or "Blue Room 706 mix."  The track listing for Morphology should be in one
of the discographies, which I think are at:

The disc is primarily a collection of Orb remixes of tracks by other artists,
and is a pretty decent comp., I'd say.  Sound quality is reasonably good,
too.

          Just thought I would send a message about the new System7(or
777 for you yanks) album 'power of seven' with reference to the
collaboration with Mssr Paterson.
 If you've not heard it(and I would recommend buying the new album it is
really shit hot.....) it's one of the best tracks I've heard in a
while...
  It begins with a really silly sample-'Good Evening-How do you
sniff?SNIFF-SNIFF' in typical orb-style and then fades into a
PinkFloyd-esque acustic guitar strumming(probably steve hilliage's
contribution to the track...)-and all through the track undertones of
MELLOW humming- changing in pitch every so often.....it then moves into
a drum-beat similar to their space days of 'Adventure Beyond....' like
in backside of the moon....
 It is hard to believe something so uninitrusive  could be so good but is
one of the best tracks I've ever heard...well recommended.

Track 10 on _Morphology_ is "601 (Orb vs. KLF)."  I had to put it on again
to answer this question...it's quite a good track, really (IMO).  Very
electronic-sounding (ie. electro-style sounds, like Kraftwerk, maybe),
kinda primitive, too (the mixing doesn't touch their work on _U.F.Orb_
or _Orbvs Terrarvm_).  Mostly light & snappy 808 percussion & analogue
tomfoolery with Orbesque samples floating in over top of it all.

but serially, i doubt that if they played that occidental mix on
120minutes or something that it would take over the nation. but who
knows? i like to tape 120minutes and then filter out all the garbage,
they did play the chemical brothers life is sweet vid, i guess
that's as cutting edge as they get, plus i enjoy the bjork vids now and
then, and some indie rock stuff.

I remember I paid Cdn.$40 each for those same shirts at the

Hey Orbheads --

A couple people have asked me about the t-shirts available at cdnow.com.
I can give some detail about two of those shirts.  The Blue shirt is a royal
blue color, with a stylized "The Orb" in yellow lettering outlined with
black
across the back of the shirt (a la Live '93 font).  On the front is a
"design"
 -- I don't know quite how to explain it.  It is about 4" or 5" square, in
yellow
with black outlines, and it is a kind of a scroll or a script that you would

see on anique woodwork.  A very attractive shirt, I purchased this one
at the Montreal show.

The "grey" shirt is also from the Live '93 tour, and it is the more
attractive
of the two, IMHO.  It features the astronaut figure from the back of the
Peel Sessions.  This figure is a 4-5" diameter circle on the front breast
of the shirt, and on the rear the design takes up a good portion of the
shirt.  A very attractive shirt, this one was unfortunately sold out at
the Montreal show by the time I got to the stand.

The third shirt offered there I have no information on.

Well that's funny. I wonder how different they are from versions you can get
elsewhere? I know his original peel sessions (huge evergrowing days) was great.
I don't know about this one. He already did 'No Fun' on Icons of the Orb (boot)
so i've heard that... didn't like it too much. But the others would definately be
interesting to see if he's changed them at all.
