  60. one, seeing as how they broke up Thursday.  Or so I was told when they 
  61. pulled out of their show here in Eugene.  Not that I assume that the band 
  62. was being entirely truthful, but...you might want to check.

  114. The group certainly has not broken up! They had to cancel the show in
  115. Eugene in order to take a long detour and pick up some equipment,
  116. unfortunately. In fact, Jeff (who had left the group) is now back in
  117. the group, at least for the moment. The Chicago show is indeed set for
  118. the Empty Bottle on July 12, last I heard. Here's the rest of the tour,

  202. This is actually the second Musica Transonic album. The first one
  203. was self-titled and came out about 18 months ago I guess. The
  204. line-up is the same: Kawabata (guitar, from Toho Sara), Nanjo (bass,
  205. from High Rise), and Yoshida (drums, from Ruins). Kawabata and Nanjo
  206. are also in Mainliner, whose CD I released a couple of weeks ago.
  207. The first MT album had some stellar moments, but suffered a bit from
  208. noodling and not grooving enough. The new one corrects that defect for
  209. the most part, I think, and I like it a lot more. The title of the
  210. new one is in some weird writing so I can't transcribe it here.
  211. Definitely good stuff. Not as straight-ahead and intense as High Rise
  212. in the way it psychedelically grooves, but it's got some great things
  213. going on.

  284. I went to Lunar Cabaret last night and stayed for both sets.  This trio consists of 
  285. the timbrally bold Hannes Loeschel on and in his sometimes prepared piano, Paul 
  286. Skrepek on traps and the commanding-sounding electric bow, and Martin Zrost playing 
  287. the most schizophrenic alto sax you'll want to hear, alternating between some 
  288. straight ahead R&B lines from a neo-Grover Washington bag and the most respectable 
  289. free-style wailing, quite compatible with the the still-resonating echoes of Mats 
  290. Gustafsson, who was at this space a few days earlier. 
  291.  
  292. This group is, if anything, multistylistic, but the seams are well-sewn and not 
  293. usually visible.  In the one tune where this was intentionally not true, the stark 
  294. and sudden contrast between Zrost's cool ballad style blowing and dry sound over a 
  295. low, smoldering polychordal modal figure, with big dark chords, by Loeschel, and -- 
  296. separated by very pregnant long-held stop-time -- a bluesy section with Zrost 
  297. turning on the vibrato and the schlag (well, they are from around Vienna!), created 
  298. a poetical effect which was provocative. This was "Chic Ultra" -- my favorite piece 
  299. of the night.
  300.  
  301. There is a strong sense of organization here -- everything is through-composed 
  302. (except for one piece), yet in most every piece there was an opportunity for 
  303. somebody to take a solo in a free-sounding vein.  They are rooted in tonality and 
  304. are very close, at times, to a mainstream jazz idiom. They go off into less common 
  305. meters: a delightful piece was "Lubna Amore Mia", which was in a fast 7/4 which they 
  306. seemed to actively avoid subdividing, so it kept me pleasantly off-balance. While U 
  307. Wait, have effectively assimilated the styles of some of their European free-improv 
  308. bretheren.  This is a fusion, then, of a harmonically sophisticated jazz with the 
  309. free improv style of tonal ambiguity and exploration of non-traditional sounds 
  310. (sampled sound and speaking voices are used sparingly, and each player explores many 
  311. extended techniques of his instrument).  Their pieces are short by improv standards 
  312. -- again, more along the lines of mainstream jazz -- ranging in duration between 2 
  313. and 8 minutes, and this supports the feeling of great variety, which is clearly 
  314. something these guys strive for.  Tightly controlled pieces, yet high energy and and 
  315. a sense of freedom.

  317. They are going to be at Bop Shop on July 4th and 11th, and in Milwaukee on July 9th 
  318. at a place called The Estate.  I understand that Ken Vandermark has changed his 
  319. schedule and will be playing at Lunar on Thurday July 4th.  Check em out.

  337. about new releases of an nm-listy nature?  I'm tired of stumbling across
  338. new PSF releases that have been out for months and sat languishing in
  339. their excellence on dusty shelves because I didn't know they existed.  I'm
  340. interested in PSF, Twisted Village, Extreme, Tzadik, TOE etc.  I used to
  341. count on the FE catalog for this kind of information but I don't think
  342. they've sent out a catalog for well over a year now, have they?

  354. I've been reading The Wire out of England, and have been pretty satisfied.
  355.  There is a level of pretentiousness that flitters among the pages, but
  356. overall I have been finding it a good source for finding out about upcoming
  357. ambient/postclassical/"out rock" imports.

  628. Saw their L.A. area show (at Spaceland in Silverlake), and wasn't
  629. particularly impressed.  While the duo's interaction was elegant and often
  630. quite interesting structurally, their sonic palette left much to be desired
  631. (altogether too many digitally modeled pan pipe and clavinet tones).  Not
  632. enough evil in it, as a younger Eno might have said.  I'm not necessarily
  633. nostalgic for Moogs, but I found the cloying elevator-ness of the sound very
  634. difficult to take.

  1748. had many releases on labels like Safe House & Homestead throughout the 
  1749. 80's/90's, started as a hometaper from Austin TX with a Casio keyboard.
  1750. Had music on the Kids soundtrack.

  1752. DANIEL MILLER founded Mute Records (he was The Normal - remember "TVOD"?) 
  1753. and released albums by Frank Tovey known as Fad Gadget.

  1813. The last thing I heard was that US Steel Cello did a two night show in Boston
  1814. in November '94 at the Middle East.  Rutman was supposedly sitting in for one
  1815. of the nights.
