So what you're saying is that you went to the arcades and played someone who
had already played KI for quite a while, tried someone out, and got your ass
kicked? Then you home and cried to mommy? When that game came out, it was a
revolution. It spawned fighters like the whole VS's games and even Mortal
Kombat took the idea. The one unique thing about KI is their combo breakers.
The combo system was extremely well balanced and worked like a charm. In
fact, that was THE best fighter out until Soulcalibur for the Dreamcast IMHO.
I think other people out there feel the same way as well. Of course, you
could judge a game on the first fight but if you don't give it a chance and
try to learn the game, don't go and say it was horrible: you just don't know
enough to give an intelligent review / opinion.

Nope, it's Nintendo, not just that store. Like Playstation's Greatest Hits
but for a better bargain ($20 instead of $50-$60 whereas PSX is $20 instead
of $30-$40).

The Transfer Pak is already completed and has been out for quite a while now
in Japan.
Yeah, they're more like 5000 feet and maintaining.

Did the Game Gear make more money than it cost to develop? I don't know the

So what you mean is if Alex doesn't agree with you he must be wrong? I played
a lot of Killer Instinct & KI Gold, and truth be told, I really don't think
to highly of either of them. To me, you don't have to agree, the best
fighting games on the planet are Soul Blade and Soul Calibur DC.

I'm curious as to just how big a leap the industry is making over the
previous generation. To be more clear let me ask this question assuming
Dolphin is comparable to PS2...
Is the leap of N64->Dolphin as big as the leap from SNES->N64?
PSX->PS2
PS2 and Dolphin are so much more powerful than their predecessors and I
was wondering if the leap is more than the 16/32-64 bit generation one.

That is moronic to say. I'm sorry but obviously they are working on
something. For instance: Gameboy Advance, GB Transfer Pak, the Dolphin
(duh), the Dolphin Controller, Mario for the Dolphin, and the list goes on.
Maybe they don't have a stellar hit coming right now but they're relying on
Rare to take care of that while they have a go at the new hardware they take
so much pride in. Obviously, even if there's no tech demo out, they are
working on something and that something includes a lot. Nintendo is *not*

Subject: [N64] Nintendo and S3 Partner on Next-Generation Game Console Design
(Seems like Nintendo's not pulling ANY punches...)
Nintendo's 'Dolphin' to Use Unique S3 Compression Technology -- S3TC
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 30, 1999--Nintendo
and S3(R) Incorporated (Nasdaq:SIII) today announced a partnership to
employ S3's industry-leading graphics technology on Nintendo's next
home video game console, code-named 'Dolphin.'
Dolphin is the first home video game console in the world to
embed S3's advanced texture compression technology right onto the
graphics chip. The results will include elimination of blurriness,
blockiness and monotonous repetition of the same elements on screen.
Furthermore, S3 will help to make indistinguishable the lines that
separate art from photography, fantasy from reality.
"In just the past few years, the graphic improvement in video
games has been stunning. S3 will be a major force in accelerating the
performance we'll achieve on Dolphin," explained Howard Lincoln,
Chairman, Nintendo of America Inc. "With their unique graphics
compression technology, developers will be able to provide players
with more complex and colorful graphics. Coupled with our previously
announced strategic agreements with companies like IBM, Matsushita,
ArtX and MoSys, incorporation of S3 technology will make Dolphin a
console without equal."
"Our agreements with companies like Nintendo, Intel and Microsoft
show we're an emerging leader in the push to define video game and PC
technology," said Andrew Wolfe, Chief Technology Officer, S3
Incorporated. "A high-performance, highly efficient application that
is simple for developers to program for, S3TC should enable a wealth
of unparalleled content for Nintendo's Dolphin console. This is
another example of S3 expanding its technology presence into new
markets."
Using S3's texture compression technology allows Dolphin
developers to compress texture data to one-sixth its normal size while
maintaining or improving the image quality of the original artwork.
Larger and more detailed textures will now require less memory and
reduced load time.
S3TC(TM) decompression technology is incorporated right onto
Dolphin's graphics chip, being designed for Nintendo by ArtX, Inc.
This chip will then decompress the textures 'automatically' allowing
dramatic improvement in graphics performance without increasing
programming complexity.
Consequently, pictures on screen boast new levels of detail and
variety, allowing new depictions of both realism and fantasy.

You can get away with a $400 tag in Japan, but not in US? That sounds pretty

much in Japan, who's to say that it won't actually cost more in the US?

Alright, Dave. Pokemon Snap, Mario Party, Super Smash Bros. Maybe not
developed soley by Nintendo, but still very closely tied with 1st party
developement. And besides, Nintendo is probably preoccupied with developing
the Dolphin hardware. I don't think that they've forgotten how to make games.

Yes and Yes. Look, that is the way it has always been. I'm not exactly
sure why other than the Japanese are just willing to spend more on video
games.

Hmm, and IMO, none of them all that good. We have already gone into the
debate over SSB though, so we do not need to go there again :)

They don't have to be ignorant, just young or mainstream.

From a technogical standpoint, the Dolphin looks more impressive weekly.
I'm anxious to see if they can truly keep the cost down.
But, I also feel it is my duty to throw out the cynical point of view as
well :)
I remember back before the N64 was launched how everyone (including
myself) oooohed and aaahed over the fact that it was designed by SGI. But
alas, when it actually launched all I saw were 2 games...one great, and
one not so good. Followed immediately by months of waiting for anything
halfway decent to come out for it. Therefore, I will try to keep myself
from getting too excited about the Dolphin (I almost always get get pumped
up about every system that comes out...to the point to where when there is
only a month or less to go until launch I am nearly in physical pain with
anxiety :) until I see a final list of launch games. In other words, all
this tech is great, but the N64 had a bunch of technological advantages
over the PSX too...but you have to supply the games!
