Okay, everyone, which game would you buy? I can only get one, and I've rented
Duke. So far, Duke seems okay, not great, but the levels are nice, and it'd
be cool to get farther in the game. So which one would you get?
Also, how would you guys want Dolphin to load DVDs? Top loading, like the
PSX, front loading like PS2, or load into a chamber like a car CD or
something?

No, I didn't say that. I'll get the Dolphin no matter what. I was just
curious as to what everyone would rather have. I personally would like a top
loader or a car stereo-type loader, less moveable parts means less
maintenance.

It's not really similar to Smash Bros. at all. It's in 3D, first off. The
main appeal of SSB is playing with your friends bashing each other with
Nintendo characters. Powerstone is more of a "look at the fancy graphics"
type of game. It is definitely more arcadish than say Tekken or Soul
Calibur.
When playing Powerstone (which I did extensively in the arcade when it came
out), I found that being able to run around and climb things wasn't very
useful. The stages are too small. In SSB, most stages are large enough that
you can easily run away from your opponent. In Powerstone it's like running
around in a room.. you can avoid them for a while, but sooner or later
they'll catch you. Add to that the extensive range of projectile weapons and
attacks, and climbing doesn't really do you much good. Trey, I highly
suggest that you don't buy Powerstone until you've played it for about 5
hours, minimum. Then you'll get bored of it. I guarantee it. Do yourself a
huge favor, and the rest of us so that we don't have to listen to you bitch
about how much it sucks a week after you get it.

My thinking (maybe someone else can go further):
SNES - Mode 7 - simulated 3-D rotation, movement (you get the idea...), not
done by any other console.
N64 - 3D Effects as hardware features, mip-mapping, anti-aliasing,
perspective correction, etc.,...not on any of the consoles available at that
time.
Dolphin - This is where I'm stuck. What new graphical techniques can be
introduced besides bezier (sp?) curves & bump-mapped textures? I'm really
don't follow 3D graphical advances so I have no idea what's left.

It'll become clear once its announced. Like i said, its definately hardware
and you can extrapolate the rough idea of what it is from n64 and snes.
BTW, related parts of the big secretyou already know, like the loads of
embedded ram in the console. I'm not entirely clear myself how much ram
there
is, but its my understanding there's embedded ram in the gekko processor,
embedded ram in the ArtX chip as well as RAM in other components of the
console.

Hmmm...The first time I played it that's what I thought. But as you
experiment with fighters & get to know each one and what they can do,
there's a stragety element to it. Speed, strength, & the size and openness
of the arena come into play. As well as places to hide. :-)

True, the more you play, the more you want to open up the arenas and keep
going. Some of the attacks are too powerful for the small areans, but for a
novice to fighting games, I don't mind. I think the game forces you to
focus on what's available, can you get to it, and how to use it.

I'd rather run arond a room and find a weapon to use personally, but to each

As someone who just had the cd-drive on his computer crap out (won't close
and stay close, with or without a disk in the trey) i completly agree.
Anyone else remember how hard it was to get the Nintendo to work right
after awhile? Or the way it would reset itself if you acidently bumped it
slightly?
I don't relish the possibility of three years from now having to pry the
DVD tray of my PS2 open in order to get my disk back =) Everything should
load from the top, and you should not need the aid of any mechanical
device more complicated than a lever anda spring to get the media back
out =)

Duke was bashed incessantly by many magazines, including Next-generation, the
only magazine i have a high respect for.
I'd suggest a rental. I recently read a review on another magazine which gave
the game an above average mark and coming from eurocom, i'm pretty sure its not a
stinker like curisn' usa or dual heroes. in the end, it might all come down to
tastes.

Let me put it bluntly: The only thing damning about Shadowman is itself. It
loads, it's bland, the AI is nonexistant, the levels are a troublesome
waste...I can point to various more worthwhile games to get. Hell, you can't
even find the first boss within the first the hours of playing -- instead you
have wander mindlessly about the levels again and again searching for pieces
of something or another so you can actually begin to have any real effect in
the game. My suggestion is this: screw both of them and get something worth
the cash. Honestly, neither game looks worth it. Shadowman has potential in
its design, but its execution blows. If we're talking N64 only, I can't
paticularly recommend anything recent (Mario Golf perhaps), but JFG is not
too far off...

Poor son. If that's what you have to choose from, I feel sorry for you. The
obvious choice is neither. Instead get Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver for the
PlayStation. Before I got my Dreamcast that's all I played. It's a great
game, and gives you violence along with a great story, excelent control, and
huge "dungeons". Some of the puzzles require some thought, but the game (so
far) isn't cheap, a very well designed game. Plus it doesn't resort to potty
mouth in place of content. The voice acting is probably the best on any
system, well, no, but second only to Metal Gear Solid.

Like a crar CD? I like scratched DVDs, yeah. ;) I'd like to see the discs in
permanent caddies (imagine like a big Mini-Disc) and be a front loader.

The action does get going when more than 2 characters are close

How about Thrill Kill..wasn't it more than 2 people? It got canceled but
was still available from the HK market :)

Ok, you tend to just overdue anything you say just to make the big N look
better. Pushed 4 player fighting into the mainstream?? There is just that
one game...where is the genre? I'm sorry, but it's commercial success is
due in large part to the Nintendo mascots and Pokeman...that does not
automatically make it a great game.

Uhh...I don't issue with the fact that it is a Nintendo game notice the
prasie i have been giving JFG recently..think before you say something
next time...thanks)...I just think it is an average game that was forced
into the spotlight by the use of Nintendo mascots. Without them, I still
believe it would be just another so-so game.

Get over the multi-tap will you?? Sheesh...First, let's get something
straight. The mulit-tap failed due largely to the fact that the PSX does
not have the horse power to do four player games well in the first place.
Second, I have never declared the demise of anything...get a clue bud.
You are trying to make me out to be some Nintendo hater so you don't have
to listen to the valid point I make. But the fact is, I don't hate
Nintendo. Overall, I have just been disappointed by the N64. And like I
said, I just don't SSB is a great game...it is AVERAGE..get it? And I
think it would have had a lot less commercial success without the mascots
and Pokeman. You just can't accpet that I may indeed be correct. God
forbid I have an opinion opposite to yours.

man, what is wrong with you anyway? I was not drawing 'parallels;
between the PSX and N64!! I was talking about SSB. At what point did it
turn into a N64 vs PSX discussion...i must have missed that. The only
reason I brought up the PSX was to say that I think SSb would have failed

I guess they could be considered the pioneers, since the game was even done
and everything, just no one would publish it. It's hard for me to judge a
game I've never even seen in motion or know any gameplay details of, let
alone play it.
BTW, anyone think it's a little bizarre that we're comparing a game that was
never published because of it's content and a game that features Pokemon?

Actually, that's not a bad idea. It would provide some sort of rudimentary
copy protection, too, since you couldn't just slip it in a PC and copy away.

Get Shadowman. I think the Duke games are lame.

I like top loading myself...it just seems like less can go wrong, no
motorized parts required. Front loading does allow you to put the system
in narrow spaces (height wise) though.
