I think it is possible. Especially since Nintendo has already said they
are waiting to see the PS2 final stats. They may indeed be holding back.
Despite Dex's theory that Nintendo is holding back so that Sony does not
copy...I think it is more likely they are holding back so they know what
they need to do...for this reason, i think it is possible Sony maybe
holding back also.

it is a good point that the ps2 can play dvd-movies.
I think they could sell it for more since you are tapping
into a new video as well! I seem to remember this feature
was in doubt and that the dolphin wasnt going to play movies
to keep the cost down.
My second point is that the analog controller is an excellent controller.
Why change it! Also it means that you already have a controller or two
so you might be quite happy about only getting one controller boxed
with the system ;)

well that should be obvious. Sony's intention all along was to produce a
games console that tied in philosophically with the rest of their
consumer range of products. Except for Stereo systems ( which are getting
more futuristic) the majority of entertainment products produced by Sony
( and all the other major manufacturers) are square and black ( VCR, DVD,
LaserDisc, Satellite, Cable to name a few). to be honest I'm surprised
they didn't go with a single infrared port capable of dealing with up to
16 infrared joypads, which would have eliminated any ugly wires at the
front of the console( this is is still possible as Sega managed it with
the Megadrive/Genesis whereby you plugged an IR receiver into the joypad
port and then you played with and IR joypad). Also with the popout drawer
for the discs it can now be stacked neatly in a much tighter space
without the need for room at the top. Panasonic tried to do the same with
the 3DO but their timing was wrong, the games industry still hadn't been
accepted by the mainstream and people saw it as trying to be more than it
should be.

according to the specs they are going with USB and Firewire (IEEE 1394
developed by Apple) which will allow the addition of Hard drives, DV

And the only solution would be a PSX Multi-Tap. If it will even work with the

I don't know, i'm a litle suspicious of analog buttons. I can't think of a
lot of situations where analog buttons would be very useful, and as
someone with not the best manual dexterity who already has enough problems
acomplishing tasks using analog joysticks, i'm concerned about what evil
plans developers are currently scheming up to make things more dificult
for me =)
In any even, i certainly don't see why you'd need _all_ the buttons to be
analog. If they are, i'm guessing that ssoner or later the buttons are
going to get gummy and dirty and start malfunctioning. Especially if
enough games use the analog feature, and encourage you to pound down on
the buttons as hard as you can =)

Wrong. Let's look, shall we? Original Nintendo. Relatively gray, was #1
console in its life span. SNES vs. Genesis. SNES eventually won with games
like DKC, was gray, and was the dominant system in the 16-bit wars. Then
comes N64, PSX and Saturn. the gray system, PSX, is on top, and it's gray.
Game Boy: originally gray, save GBC, but the name was so recognized it might
as well have been gray. It beat the Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket, the Nomad, and
the WonderSwan. Virtual Boy: red. See, all the gray systems have been the
industry leaders.

I really don't the big deal about the same controllers. First, people are
already used to them and since you can play all your previous PSX games,
you won't have to get used to a new controller. Maybe that is is their
thinking? I don't know. Anyway, I think they should have at least done
an LCD screen like the DC. I really like the LCDs on my DC controllers.
But the dual shocks are already great controller. The dual analog stick
are great...especially for games like Critical Depth...it controls
horribly unless you use the dual analog.
I personally think the Sega or Nintendo need their own dual analog
controllers...they are very versatile. The problem is, it might be hard
to make a dual analog controller without it looking similar to the Dual
Shock.
It may cost a bit, but I think Nintendo should one-up Sega and come out
with controllers that have color LCD screens (like the GBC), that would be
cool.

Don't forget, like I'd let you, the PC Engine. Originally it was white, but
it's second incranation, the PC Engine Core Grafx, was gray and it kicked
Mega Drive butt all the live long day and held its own with the Super FamiCom
quite nicely.

The controllers have me sceptical, but I'll wait & see until I can try them
out. The Dual Shock is a nice controller, I'll reserve judegement on the Dual
Shock 2.
The look of the system, I think it looks better than the N64, that's for
sure. The N64 design is silly with it's front feet bigger than its back feet.
Like somebody else said, it looks like an amplifier. I just wonder why Sony
went with a front loader? A top loading system would be cheaper to produce, I
guess it's to avoid piracy.

Not really, How about a Staurn 3-D pad (sometimes callec the NiGHTS
controller) with a second analog stick (ball) on the upper right hand side
and have the face buttons (A, B, C, X, Y, Z) a tad bit lower?

I never liked the PSX controllers much, they're not curved enough for my
tastes ;-). No, don't take this as bias Stryder, 'cause I know you like to
do that, I really hated the original NES square controller too.
Personally, and this is just my opinion which I am not trying to force on
anyone, the LCD screens strike me as stupid. I like my controllers light and
streamlined, not with stuff sticking out of it. Maybe it's just me. BTW, I
doubt Nintendo will go with an LCD controller, probably instead they will
allow you to hook a CGB into a controller port.

I agree. I'm as big a booster of online gaming as anyone. It lets you find
people to play with 24/7, and can in some cases support thousands of times
more players than a console. Still, there's a lot to be said for having
someone by your side when playing games. It makes communication a lot
easier, for one thing (yeah, I know, there is voice software for the net,
but it only works well for LPBs). If I'm playing a basketball game or
something, I'm not going to type "Pass to ME!," by that time my partner(s)
will have starting driving or taken a shot already. There's also the latency
factor.. when I'm playing a game with someone on a console, I don't have to
worry about being disconnected or the speed slowing down to a crawl. There
are also some types of games that because of their focus on reaction time
just can't be played over a 56k connection.

The VMS goes inside the DC controller. So I take it you dislike the Rumble
Pak?

I have only one phone line, but probably 80% of my friends have one. Of
course, I live in an upper middle class town, so that's by no means a valid
measure of how many people have multiple lines.
(BTW, I only know 2 people who are getting/have gotten DC's)

Actually, yes, I do dislike the Rumble Pak. I only use it if it is used VERY
effectively in a game (basically, only 1080 Snowboarding). I didn't even
leave it in for half of Zelda.
I know the VMS goes inside. But when you don't have one in, you have these
two huge gaping slots at the top of the controller.

What does the dreamcast use the lcd screen for anyway? THe only thing i
could think of was perhaps keeping stats secret in a strategy game, or
maybe if you wanted to move the lifebars off the screen in a fighting
game.
am i just not being creative enough in thinking up uses for it? =)

I agree entirely. Powerful or not, I personally abhor the Playstation
controller as I find it incredibly crowded and goes against basic ergonomics
- -- at least for my hands. Quite simply, my hands aren't an inch and a half
wide and my fingers aren't a millimeter in diameter. I need some love handles
on my controller! So a repeat kills me. And I could possibly live with the
horrendously tacky design (I don't care what anyone says, the N64 looks like
a work of Michaelangelo in comparison; as does my PC mouse) except to have to
go for a multitap AND modem, well, that along with a total lack of any real
PSX exclusives of interest (Namco's Tekken is the only thing of interest, and
hey! I got Soul Caliber, so...), well that about kicks it right there. But
let's not forget the real pain in the butt -- a whopping $300+ (that's about
where it'll wind up I imagine when it gets released here, and that's a $70
cut from the Japanese price). And when you had all the stuff you'd need to
get a good ol' system running (extra controllers, a mem pak, multi-tap,
modem), we're running quite a bill. Screw them, bring on the real Next-Gen
system!!
