Um.. No. You sem to be misunderstanding. I was trying to make the point that
the RAM is the same everywhere. I was NOT suggesting that you actaully plug
in your own RAM. For one thing, cutting up those circuit boards is not a
good idea. Second, the speed of the RAM that you put in might not be
compatible with that of the RAM already in the system. Third, putting in 64
megs wouldn't do you any good anyway, since there ae no games designed to
take advantage of that.
It does, however bring up a good point. Has there ever been a system that
lets you upgrade RAM by pluggin more in? This sounds really good to me.
Theoretically, Nintendo could release an expansion pak for 8, 16, even 32
megs of RAM. This would, technically at least, even the playing field with
some of those new systems.
However, I can think of a lot of reasons why this is not gonna happen. One,
developers would have to do more coding to see whether someone has the
expansion. Two, and more importantly, 32 megs of RAM would be insane. Why?
The biggest cart size announced is 32 Megs (Zelda and Turok II). That means
that you could store the entire cart in your RAM. There are no advantages to
this.. access times wouldn't be significantly better, since carts are so
fast anyway.

Why are you wining about it being too hard and you havent even played it.
I am fed up with these easy cheesy games that Nintendo puts out. I even
think Banjo could stand to be a little harder. When are they gonna make
games that challenge us? Isnt that what the difficult setting is SUPPOSED
to do?
Goldeneye was the only game I can think of that was hard enough in hard
mode. (007) <- SWEET!
Just a thought.

You've misunderstood what the extra RAM would be used for. Not for speeding
up access to data on ROM - that's almost instantly available anyway, right
Gordon? It's used for bigger video buffers - ie instead of 320x240, 640x480
becomes an option. It's used to allow programmers more complex in-game data
structures, e.g. games with more characters walking about, more people to
shoot. Things like that.
The problem with having a whole range of memory add-ons is that it gets
increasingly more difficult to support - with one solitary size, it's an
"either/or" case, with more, the programmer cannot be sure what size of
market there'll be.

This had in memory is an old idea. Someone asked whether
it had happened before. The ZX spectrum is an ideal example
you upgrade your chugging 16k mem with an additional 32k to make
a whopping 48k. They were abit of a pain because now again if you knocked the
back your game could crash as the damn memory lost its connection.
Nintendo is old hat ;)

As usual I have forgotten how many NTSC scan lines there are?
512 lines? 2 frame of 256?
How does the number of scan lines on a VHS tape compare to the NTSC number,
and how does VHS circuitry compensate?
I know super VHS has more scan lines, but it has to be less than NTSC right?
Or can the video out signal have more scan lines?

I have two displays for when playing my games. My regular 21" RCA =
television, which is old and can't get anywhere near a good resolution. =
My other is an old Commodore 14" Monitor which is much sharper in =
resolution and colors. So...if a expansion pak comes out, I would be =

to see the screen.

Yeah the first time I went in they were all $60, I'd like to think I'm
partly responsible, as I pointed out to them that Nintendo had brought many of
their games down to $49.99 brand new. Well now it's the only place I go for
games.

Most likely a hoax. I mean, unless he has some buddies in Texas who stole a
most likely incomplete version of Turok 2 on a reusable ROM (or whatever, Peer
was talking about 'em in an N-Query), it's a hoax. And besides, putting up a
classified like that can get his arse busted, but I doubt it.
On a related note, I pre-purchased Turok II like I said a while ago. But I
checked the alleged due date as to when the game would be in and to my
surprise it said September 6th. I'm guessing that this is maybe a misprint in
Toys "R" Us' prepurchase tickets, but after a few weeks I went back and it
still said the 6th on other tickets. Anyone else have this... er... problem?
Or should I said good fortune?

Whilst I agree that Tomb Raider set new standards for the third
person genre, I found it an extremely dull game. In, fact it's the
kind of game that kept me loyal to Nintendo.
And there are conflicting 3D card standards, which fragments the
support. To get the most out of a card, programmers must code
specifically for it. If not, you get the DirectX dumbed down version,
which no-one talks about.

Let's not get in a Tomb Raider argument on this list. It's pointless.
Everyone has their own opinion and they aren't going to change it. I've
been in constant fights trying to convince people that TR, Resident Evil,
and San Fran Rush are garbage but haven't changed anyone's mind.
Hey, you know what all of those games have in common? Terrible control but
good graphics. Hmmm....

Let me sing the praises of the PC Engine once again. Throughout the years of
the PC Engine CD-ROM, 1989 to 1995, it had a few RAM upgrades. For the CD-ROM
RAM it started off with only 64k of RAM, let me tell you that was really slow.
Then in 1991 it got a RAM upgrade that put it up to 2MB of RAM (called the
Super CD-ROM card or CD-ROM2) so the PC Engine could compete with the Super
FamiCom, then in 1994 the PC Engine got the Arcade Card that had a whopping
20MB of RAM, that made the PC Engine CD-ROM able to made carbon copies of Neo-
Geo games. These RAM upgrades were put in the PC Engine's cartridge slot.

Doesn't Nintendojo screen for losers like this? It's definatly a hoax. There's
a lot of losers out there who have nobody to talk to so they write bogus stuff
like that.

I didnt find any of these games to have terrible control. Control is part
of the difficulty of all games. If all games were too easy to control and
you could make your character do exactly what you wanted, the games would
be no challenge. Its all a matter of learning how to make your character
or car do what you want it to.

WTF are you talking about? Control is supposed to do exactly what you want,
when you want it. The way to make a game challenging is not to make the
game have shotty control. For instance, GE had perfect control yet was a
real pain in the butt to win. Tomb Raiders control is awful. Have you ever
even played the game? Hit jump, 2 seconds later you jump. It's ridiculous.
RE2 (haven't played 1) was also terrible. Fights consisted of holding down
the fire button. That's it. No strafe, jump, dodge or anything. RUSH (64)
was also terrible. Go play Gran Turismo then RUSH and tell me RUSH has good
control.

OK In real life. Decide to jump 6 ft in the air, can you do that
instantly? They could have programmed it that way, but chose to go for
the realistic approach. As for your question, yes I have played 1 and 2
and enjoyed 1, but 2 was just more of the same. (Better luck on 3 Edios)

Control is not the issue in RUSH vs. Gran Turismo. Its physics, physics,
physics. RUSH is an ARCADE type game where Gran Turismo is a sim. These
are based on different physics engines. Of course their controls will be
different. Some people might say Gran turismo is too hard to keep your
car on the road, where others might say RUSH turns too slow. This just
shows your preference for style of gameplay. I personally find the
realistic ones more enjoyable.
(Side note: Why are there no PC games with realistic physics besides SODA
racing?)
