What's the big fuss? :-P Which is exactly what i said in a previous message. I just find it ironic that after having to listen (for months!) to Rick and all his anti-MS fanboy rhetoric about how XBOX games would be buggy, crash, and require patches that there are clearly more reports of GC game crashes than XBOX games crashing. Of course, now, he has simply chosen to ignore or discredit it all...but whatever...I'd expect nothing less from a fanboy. It is often the case that careful statistical analysis will show the opposite to be the case or simply show little difference. I'm sure biases affect how we retain and interpret information and that has to be taken into account. Other factors include the fact that there are more GameCubes out there, thus numerically there are more GameCube users who can potentially report flaws than Xbox users. In anycase, I'm not at all concerned about crashes, as it happens on all consoles. Patching is another thing. I recently received Sid Mier's Civilization III as a gift from a high school buddy of mine who knows I'm into the genre. The game is fantastic, but it has a myriad of balancing issues, bugs, and gameplay components that don't work. I just hope that kind of lax quality control don't migrate over to the console field with the Xbox. Same the happened with the original Star Craft and with Diablo II. There are just some things that don't surface until you have thousands of players playing ten of thousands of matches online. You're never going to catch all the balance issues with a handful of game testers. You're never going to catch all the > balance issues with a handful of game testers. > > Stryder Trust me, the balancing issues border on obvious lack of playtesting than just the fact that there are too many intangibles to manage. There are also a plethora of bugs and the scenario editor was so rushed Firaxis conceded there will be a patch to bring it up to speed even before the game hit shelves. Apparently, Infogrames, the publisher, was pulling the strings and forced what looks to be a premature release of the game. And this is no ordinary game. Considering Sid is in the hall of fame, it is a shame to see his game butchered by suits who want to beat the holiday rush. This puts a lot of concerns about the quality of console games if and when this patching madness catch on. Patching itself is not a bad thing. The community feedback leads to changes that is beneficial to the game. However, the incentive for the developer to slack off and for the corporate managers to rush a game into production is elevated to the point where we will start to see Beta level games being shipped with the consumers playing the role of the beta testers as is the case with Civilization III. Anyways, back to my X-wing :) Dexter [ To quit the NGamers mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe ] [ NGamers" (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Nov 2001 16:42:03 -0600 From: Don Fentie <d.fentie@shaw.ca> Subject: Re: [NG] My Gamecube crashed...also one other thing I couldn't agree with you more Stryder. Balancing a game like that has so many variables it is virtually impossible (refer to chaos theory, butterfly effect, etc). I still remember when StarCraft first came out. The zerg were wayyyy unbalanced because of how many units they could mass. Of course 12 zerglings vs 4 zealots was always a good battle but when players started learning about hydralisk and the devistation they have in groups, there was a serious imbalance. As soon as anyone was able to get a group of 35+ hydralisks in close proximity it seemed as if they all became invincible.
