After being nearly dead for ages, this list has suddenly bounced back in a
big way. But what are the discussions? The weather, Canada, politics,
where people live...oh yeah, and another rehash of the piracy debate.
This list was good back when the DMA guys were onboard, and I will miss
Dave/Trey Table's comments, but still I must say goodbye. I just don't
enjoy reading the posts anymore - at least on message boards I can pick the
topics that I want to hear about.
So long.

Pirating is something that is hard to gather evidence for, you should
know that as I'm sure we all do it one time or the other =). unless
you actually are holding pirated software in your hands. That is why
digital pirating is such a problem. pirated digital information is much
harder to track down, and prosecute than pirating using conventional
physical mediums.

A special subscription service than will co-exist with current
services. Napster itself will provide most of the content.
That in itself is different from the current service where the content
is provided by its users. You ought to know the difference, and that's
why the music labels are so angry about the idea of a music sharing
service. There is no "snake head" so no speak for them to cut off.
Their worst enemy is the people who put up mp3 files for others to
download. They can't exactly sue everybody. Part of their case was
shutting down napster to deprive users of this service, but with so many
similar services, it is a useless gesture.

Yes... No one will pay to dl an entire album unless they want an entire
album. What has made napster so appleaing was that people were fed up
on paying $16 for a CD with one or two tracks they like.

Matt, that kind of thinking is really what the mechanism behind racism
is all about. Thinking one group is somehow superior or inferior to
another by the place of their birth.
There is little evidence to prove Americans are idiots. If anything,
their success as a country shows exactly the opposite. Just a lot of
sour grapes from the runner ups.

Audiofind.com is a decent service. It's web based. kinda like a rom site.
Also, I get nearly 100% of my game music off napster. I can't be bothered to
pay exhorbident amounts to import CDs unless I really want it.

I know no one like that...where do you get ideas like that??? Trips to
Europe are expensive...most people can't afford to spend more than a week or

That's right... The world is too cowardly to solve their own problems.
Milosevic slaughters the muslims in Serbia, the European sit around NATO and
ask the US to lead. The US led, and when something goes wrong, they are just
as quick to ridicule American incompetence and point the fingers at the
Americans.
Not to insult any Europeans in this list, as I have the highest respect for all
of you, but when you speak of American arrogance, you forget to mention we who
live in the New World often see European arrogance show up in more subtle
ways. In many circles, Americans/ Aussies and Canadians are still seen as
European rejects who left Europe because they couldn't make it in the old
world. That sentiment I think is pretty accurate.
I can't help but feel North Americans are taken advantage of by these
foreigners.
BTW, Canada pretty much follows where the US goes, no question asked, so I
consider Canada/US to be a single unit. It pretty much is, in all but name.

Well, but it really has nothing to do with Napster though...the MP3 format
is a "lossy" compression. But you are right, some people really screw them
up when the make MP3.s..I hate when you get an MP3 and while listening hear
a skip or odd noise int eh middle somewhere.

I thought of good example today. The Nomad Jukebox (the MP3 player with the
6GB HD). It can't be used to upload any MP3s. You can put all you want on
it....you can even rip CDs with it...but you can't turn around and upload
those MP3s to a friends PC or Nomad. Something similar to this could be
implemented for consoles with hardrives. If you had a system where a
console could only download but not be used to upload back to any other
console or PC. Then you could have it set up where there is a system where
there is some sort of encrypted checking system that allowed servers being
used to distribute upgrades that were meant to be bought could check to see
if it was truly the given console at the other end, and not a PC...or have a
system where the console itself lacked the ability download directly from a
home PC. Not only would this be very hard to get around...but it also means
you would have to own a PC in the first place to have any hope of
circumventing it. These types of techs are already in use and fairly easy to
implement...of course it may be too late for such a system for the PS2 or
DC...but future consoles should easily be able to use such a system. There
is ways around anything...but it should be fairly easy to make it hard
enough to discourage most and make for a profitable system.
Anyway, I never claimed any such system was fully proven...only that I don't
think it is nearly as hard to implement successfully as you seem to be
implying.

I don't hate americans, some of my best friends are yanks, however
it their arrogance of being number 1 annoys me.
Luke>>>>
At this point it should be noted that none of this was started by us
"arrogant" Americans...it was some crazy Canadian who started this with his
praise of the USA.
