I disagree. I would consider it a "must see" for anybody who likes
documentaries, especially fans of Errol Morris. It's an interesting portrayal
of a facinating individual.

Subject: [MV] Ten Best Films of 2000
***** Good work there, Mike S.
I haven't seen most of the films in your top 10 but I'll make lil' comments
...
Marc ;-)
THE BEST FILMS OF 2000
by Michael B. Scrutchin
Is a 12-year-girl spouting obscenities and doing gruesome things with a
crucifix really all that funny?
**** I would say "NO !!" but that's me ! ;-)
But since "The Exorcist" is technically a
1973 film, even with the new footage, it won't be included in my Top Ten of
2000.
** Good thinking !! Same as you shouldn't include movies like Human traffic
or Angela's ashes in a Top movies of 2000 list ... but that is a matter of
opinion.
"Traffic," : Yes, this one looks like a winner. 4/5 or more expected.
"You Can Count on Me," : same
"Jesus' Son," : same
"Almost Famous," : I would expect 3.5/5 or more.
"Dancer in the Dark." : 3.5 or more, although in this case it is hard to
tell ... I don't really like musical films but this one could be the
exception !
1. REQUIEM FOR A DREAM. : Expecting 4/5 or more ... it sounds like a REALLY
nasty film too, why can't nasty films be nominated at the Oscars ?? (Besides
Burstyn of course that seems to be a "lock" !)
2. CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. : Expecting 4/5 or more.
3. THE GIFT. This sounds great but #3 for 2000 ?? Most reviews I saw were
saying it was ok but nothing sooooo special .. I like the story, the cast,
the director though ...
4. NURSE BETTY. Looks like 3.5/5 or more ...
5. AMERICAN PSYCHO. 4/5, will probably be in my Top 10.
6. UNBREAKABLE. I gave 4/5 to the sixth sense so I expect the same from
this one ! I was surprised it was low on Smoke's list. I was thinking he
placed Me Myself and Irene and Cecil B. way too high as well ... was he
joking ?? ;-)
7. HIGH FIDELITY. 3.5/5
8. THE VIRGIN SUICIDES. 3.5/5, the first half is "ace" but then it gets
so-so ... nasty ending though ... Didn't you think it was dragging a bit in
the middle part when they are on lock down basically ...
9. WONDER BOYS. : this one was supposed to be released on video on january
9th, advertised everywhere .. but it's not anywhere in the video stores ...
has it been delayed ?? Expecting 3.5/5 or more.
10. THE NINTH GATE. : 3/5 Good but not great.
Honorable Mentions:
Croupier, Waking the Dead, Eye of the Beholder, Time Code,
The Beach, Final Destination, Gladiator, Human Traffic, Cecil B. Demented.
**** Man, you want me to get you in a HEADLOCK ?? Eye of the beholder ??
Final Destination ?? Cecil B. Demented ??
Geeeeesh !! I'll let it slide for The beach (3/5) Gladiator (3.5/5) Human
traffic (4/5) ... haven't seen the others yet !
And don't freak out 'cause "Eye of the Beholder" made my honorable
mention list -- it's a good film, or at least I think so, though everyone
else
seemed to hate it with a passion. Anyone else care to share their picks for
the Best Films of 2000?
***** Yeah, you knew you were going to hear about that one huh ... I am
tempted to place "Hollow man" in my "Mentions" now ... "For the special
effects" ! ... ;-)
Mike S.
Flipside Movie Emporium
http://www.flipsidemovies.com
**** Overall it was a good list, Mike S. ! Mine is really not so complete
... here's a first version ...
1-The cell
2-American Psycho
3-Chicken run
4-The patriot
5-Gladiator
6-The virgin suicides
7-Boiler room
8-The perfect storm
9-U-571
10-La beautΘ de Pandore (in french) ("Pandore's beauty")
Only #1-2-3 will remain in my Top 10 once I've seen all the other good films
of course ... Traffic, Crouching Tiger and company ...
I also think I might insert in my list some documentaries as I have seen
some good ones this year ... the only "rule" for me is they have to have at
least a 70 minutes running time in order to be able to compare them to
feature films.
1- The killer at Thurston High
2- Hitler's lost sub
3- Black october
4- Bet your life on Vegas
etc,
Marc ;-)

It shouldn't be funny but it was. It was so unrealistic and not believable
that it was funny.

Subject: [MV] PLEASE READ BEFORE THE NEXT 5
Hi! My name is Anthony Kanizaj, a long time user of this list. After
reading the emails and learning about the people on this list, I felt
it would be appropriate to post my movie "catalouge" to this list.
It will encompass the next 5 emails. If you don't wish to read this list,
please delete the next 5 emails without reading them.
I am a collector of hard to find and out of print movies. These movies are
legal to sell under the Berne convention. If you feel uncomfortable with
this, please simply delete this and the next five emails.
If, however, you are interested in any movies, please email me. In
addition to the movies listed, I can generally find any other movies you
are looking for. This especially applies to pornos, Hong Kong action,
anime, cult, foreign, or any others.
Movies go for 10 dollars or less, especially with bulk orders. Please
email with any questions, titles or anything else. Thank you.

Subject: [MV] List Part 1
Affliction - Not the Nolte movie. Billed as "a videop appeal to the
purient intrest", it's edited, produced and directed by mark hejnar. It
features gg allin drinking piss from a girl and eating his own shit; mike
diana puking on a cross & bible; people cutting themselves; a guy jacks
off onto a person (m?f?) and pricks his dick as he's about to cum so blood
and cum sprays all over the persons face. This is not some underground
collection; it is a documentary which has won awards (such as the chicago
underground film festival '96). I don't think it's any more legal than,
say, Guinea Pig, esp. since everything on here is real.
Africa Blood and Guts - original Mondo Movie
Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of A Serial Killer - documentary on the first
female serial killer
America's Sickest Home Videos - Purported to be a compilation of twisted
and sick videos that the tv show rejected for air time and put together to
show at an Xmas party. No matter the origin you'll be what? disgusted?
amused? whatever your reaction to home videos of puking and crotch shots
is.
Anthropophagous The Beast - Directed by Joe d'Amato, this starts out with
a family being shipwrecked on a remote Greek island. The father devours
corpses of his wife and child to survive and in turn becomes a deranged
cannibal who comsumes anybody who ventures upon the island. Also known as
The Grim Reaper. Uncut.
Angel Guts: Red Lightning - When a cameraman asks a female magazine
designer to assist him in shooting a brutal rape scene, some better
forgoten memories surface, and strange things start to happen to her.
Before long the woman wakes up with a dead bloody stranger in her
bed. Directed by Takashi Ishii. Letterboxed. English Subtitles.
Apocalypse Pooh/ Blue Peanuts/ Bring Me The Head of Charlie Brown - 3
cartoons put together by some anarchist. 1) is Winnie the Pooh footage
with Apocalypse now dialouge. Classic. 2) same thing with Blue Velvet
noise and Peanuts video. 3) The peanuts gang try to kill Charlie Brown; he
later flips out and gets his revenge.
Begotten - Eraserhead-ish film. Black and white, imperceptible story line.
This 78 min film consists of two extended sequences, one of a godlike
creature giving birth to mankind, another where a solitary man is tortured
by 2 figures in a pit. Utterly unique and not for the squeamish.
Better Tomorrow 1-3 - John Woo and Chow Yun Fat team up in Tarantino's
favorite HK action films. Woo didn't direct the third but Fat is in this
prequel.
Bickford Animation - sick and twisted cartoons
Bloody Exorcism Of Coffin Joe - you know Coffin Joe. Others in the series
available.
Cafe Flesh 1 &2 - Post apocalyptic porno; out of print classic
Caligula Reincarnated As Hitler - more twistedness in the style of the
original Caligula as the extreme kinky sex continues in the Nazi regime
Camps Of Death - an hour of war camp atrocity footage
Candy Goes To Hollywood/ Erotic Adventures Of Candy - out of print 70's
porno featuring Candy in her only known porno films
Cannibal - aka Jungle Holocaust- Directed by Ruggero Deodato (Cannibal
Holocaust), a lone survivor of a plane crash is
captured and humiliated by cannibals before a sympathetic native helps
him escape. The conspirator gets disembowelled, gutted, and has hot coals
poured into her scooped-out throacic cavity.
Cannibal Apocalypse - This version of Antonio Margheriti's gorefest was
extremely cut and domestically released as
Invasion of the Flesh Hunters. Now see all the tongue-biting, bonesaw
mayhem, shotgun
executions, and the sewer spatter sequence you were intended to see.
Uncut.
Cannibal Holocaust - Probably the sickest, most unpleasant movie ever
made. This Ruggero Deodato film has no
limits to what it shows. Complete with chicks on sticks, intestine
chomping, and limb amputations. Intense. Uncut.
Cartoon Scandals - racist, sexist cartoons from the 30's and 40's
Cat O' Nine Tales - Dario Argento's first film; out of print. Early film
written and directed by Dario Argento that is characteristically stylish
and gory. A reporter is in pursuit of a mad slasher and is aided by a
blind ex-reporter.
Charles Manson: Superstar - recent documentary revolving around a recent
interview with the man in prison.

Kingdom; Kingdom 2 - Lars Von Trier's "ER on acid" is a strange movie
(aren't they all strange? oh well) about a hospital that has the most
fucked up things going on in it. Originally a Danish Mini-series, each
part is 4 1/2 hours long! Part 2 has not been released to video yet.
La Jetee - the French short film that inspired 12 Monkeys
Laboratory Of The Devil - sequel to Men Behind The Sun; extremely
disgusting and graphic picture about Japanese medical war crimes during
the pre-WW2 Japan/China conflict. Best scene in both pictures: Hands.
Hands in a block of ice. Frozen hands plunged into boiling water. Skinless
hands.
Last House On Dead End Street - "For years LHODES was known by notoriety
and title alone. One of those movies, like Faces Of Death or Cannibal
Holocaust, that you heard about as a teenager but nobody could actually
produce, and if you did see it you wished to god you never had"
"If someone said 'make a movie, as wild, disgusting and disturbing a movie
as you possibly can' would it be anywhere as lurid as this?"
* From "Killing For Culture"
Last House On The Left - Wes Craven's critically acclaimed, intense, and
disturbing film that has an almost documental feel. Even Craven himself
considers this film so grim it shocks him. Uncut.
Leon - Uncut international Director's cut of The Professional with more
sex and much more violence - almost 30min extra.
Mack, the - set the standard for pimpin. Started the Players Ball and
walking around in huge platform shoes with goldfish.
Make Them Die Slowly - aka Cannibal Ferox; Drug dealers torture their
native slaves when they fail to produce the goods fast enough, but later
end up getting tortured themselves, thus the title. Allegedly banned
in 31 countries.
Man Behind The Sun - Original Japanes death camp atrocity movie. Plot
revolves around Unit 741, the "Mengele" equivilent in the Japanese Army.
Medical experiments (ie - torture) are forced upon captive Chinese in the
pre-WW2 conflict. Put it this way. The one 6(?) year old boy we are
allowed to identify with dies the most horribly. And there are A LOT of
horrible, graphic deaths. In Mandarin with Eng Subs
Man Bites Dog - very rare NC-17 version. Don't get fooled by the "unrated
version" - that is the censored one that every alternative video store
carries. For those that don't know it's a faux-documentary about a serial
killer in French with Eng subs.
Manson - Banned documentary full of interviews with the family members and
location shots (jsut months "after the fact") of murder scenes, hideouts,
and living quarters. See Manson and the family before 35 years of bullshit
got to them!
Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media - long (3 or 4 hours)
documentary about Noam and his views on the media's control of our
thoughts and actions
Marquis - France's answer to Meet the Feebles. This surreal sex farce is
unbelievably bent and simply indescribable. Includes twisted orgies,
torture tombs, a talking dick, people with 3-foot lobsters hanging out
their bums. In French with English subtitles.
Meet The Feebles - america's answer to marquis! (just kidding). Peter
Jackson shows his Muppets screwing, shooting smack, and blasting each
other. DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE RECENT RELEASE WITH A WHITE COVER WITH
DRAWINGS. IT IS CENSORED. This version, however, is not.
Nekromantik 1/2 - Uncensored German films about the love for the dead.
Incredibly nauseating "sex" scenes and violence abound. These could not be
shot in North America if Jello Biafra became president.
Neurotica 1/2 - mo' disgusting Canadian cartoons.
New York Ripper - Fulci and lots of blood. Letterboxed. Need I say more?
Night Porter - Concentration camp guard falls in love with jew in camp.
Makes her have kinky sex. After war he flees and becomes a hotel porter.
She checks in. Instead of turning him in she starts up their relationship
again so they start having sex on broken glass and stuff.
Night Of The Comet - really reall cheesy& hard to find 80's "horror" about
an apocalypse that kills everybody on earth except 2 ditzes and Erik
estrada from CHIPS in the longest uncredited role ever,
Outrageous Animation - read the title!!
Oz - the TV show. Every episode from all 4 seasons
Homicide - the tv show, every episode from all 7 seasons and the
made-for-tv after-movie
Sex In The City - all of Season 1
Paradise Lost - two kids found guilty of a satanic crime in a small city.
This documentary shows they were probably innocent, who most likely did
it, and why things went how they did. Fascinating for anyone interested in
true crime.
Picnic at Hanging Rock - Peter Weir's first film finally re-released
beautifully on DVD. Schoolgirls in Australia go on a picnic and don't
return..but it's really about sex with little girls.
Plan 9 From Outer Space - the original worst movie ever, not that cut to
shit Rhino version.
Plymptoons - even mo' twisted animation
Prisoner - every episode
Rainbow Thief - Alexandro Jodorowsky's latest film is a bit more
commercial, but still crazy enough in it's own right. Omar Shariff and
Peter O'Toole live in a sewer beneath the city streets with a stuffed dog.
Rapture - early David "X-Files" Duchovny appearance in this film about
biblical apocalypse...and sex! Very trippy - must be watched on some
halluciogen to get the full effect. Actually, that's probably true for
half the movies in this catalouge...
Reefer Madness/ Cocaine Fiends - 2 hilarious movies guaranteed to stop you
from doing drugs...really.
Rhino's Guide To Safe Sex/ Dope Mania - 2 films from Rhino video about,
well, sex and drugs. Utilising old footage we can see things like "Sex
Court" and a computer simulation of an acid trip. 2 great flicks for
parties - it says so right on the box!
Romper Stomper - Young Nazi's in the UK take fighting for the fatherland
to a whole new, gory-as-fuck level. Blood, guts, sex and Russel Crowe as a
youngster.
Salo: 120 Days Of Sodom - Pasolini's, um, masterpiece. "A shocking,
repulsive film set in WW2 Italy, where a group of bourgoise fascists
degrade and sexually brutalize teenagers of both sexes". *From Video Movie
Guide* It is purportedly a treatise on power but you'll watch it for the
shit baths and the spoon eyeball removal. And the political subtext if you
have to defend your actions in court.
Santa Sangre - Alexandro Jodorowsky's latest masterpiece is an
extraordinary visual experience. What more could you ask for than to see a
group of Corkys snort cocaine, dance, eat fresh fruit, and then go to the
cathouse? Insanely awesome. Uncut.
Schizopolis - By Stephen Sodenburgh (Traffic, Out Of Sight). Very
Lynchian, very little plot, very, very strange. For instance, the director
is nice enough to show one scene twice in case you missed it the first
tiome and suddenly developed a fluency in French.
SFW - aka So Fucking What! Early Stephen Dorff movie. Gen Xers are taken
hostage for months on live tv in the back of a quicky mart. They escape
when the beer runs out and our hero goes back to his life..or so he
thinks.
Shivers - Residents of a completely self-contained, up-scale apartment
complex are infected by a parasite that turns them into sexual crazies.
David Cronenberg's feature film debut with excellent effects by Joe
Blasco. Also known as They Came From Within.
Shocking Africa/Shocking Asia 1,2,3 - Incredibly twisted and graphic and
gory all purprtedly real scenes of what goes on in these mysterious
places. Sex change scenes, jungle circumscions and corpse drug smuggling
are just a few of the highlights.
Mondo Cane 1,2/Mondo Violence/Mondo Magic - the original Mondo films shy
away from actual "death scenes" but fill you up with scenes of strangeness
and curiosity, which tend to be much interesting (and much clearer!).
Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist - The title says
it all. Bod has MS or Parkinson's or something and deals with his pain by
abusing his body. Despite all the eww gross scenes in this movie, I
strongly advise that when his dick and a board and a nail fill up the
entire screen, take a bathroom break until you hear your brother scream
TWICE.
Sleazemania - Scenes and Trailers of nasty shit from the 40's to the 70's.
If you like something Weird video's output, this is your video.
Snuff - Purported to be a real snuff movie. 80 minutes of biker movie
slasher mania and drugs, 5 minutes of real or is it rape and murder. This
movie was banned and many prominant judges, movie crewmen and others swear
this could not be faked..see it for yourself.
Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Vol.1-4 - Canada's own S&M present the
nastiest cartoons ever draawn. If you think South Park is hardcore, come
to Canada. Start with these as a primer.
Star of Dave: Beauty Hunting - A boy is born 9 months after a criminal
breaks into a house, torments the husband and rapes the wife. After the
boy grows up, he acts as if he is a normal guy, but he secretly is just
like his father. He converts his basement into a torture chamber and
eventually father and son reunite to capture young girls together and
viciously torment them.
Street Trash - A mouthy store owner finds a case of tainted liquor in a
storeroom an begins selling it to local bums for a buck a bottle. Chaos
begins when the hooch circulates through the city and starts causing
people to melt into multi-colored piles of slime. An FX spectacular
directed by Jim Muro and written by Roy Frumkes (Document of the Dead).
Sweet Movie - I think "Muff diving and dump contests" pretty much says it
all.
Sweeet Sweetback's Badassssss Song - (note; may be incorrect amount of
ssss's. IF you think this may be another movie with more s's please
confirm.) Quintessential blaxploitation movie by Melvin Van Peebles,
finally uncut after all these years of the man's opression. Huey Newton,
founder of the Black Panthers, said this is the movie to learn how to
fight back against Whitey. Pin the tail on the honkey!
Taboo - Divorced woman can't get laid. well she can but not by the
sleazeballs, lezbos and orgymiesters she keeps meeting. her son fucks
everything in sight and, after fucking his sister, is running out of
conquests. What is the solution to this dilemma? PS - "MOM" is about 25
and SOOO hot.
Talk Dirty To Me - Finally, after all those chick pornos, a MAN'S PORNO!
One male star instead of a female star and many guys. He tells them what
he wants and they love it. They just don't make them like this any more.
Stupid congress.
Tetsuo: Iron Man/ tetsuo II: Body hammer - Strange Japanese films about a
man who is losing skin and growing metal. Memorable for the huge
dick/drill that he fucks/kills his girlfriend with. Part 2 is a
semi-remake. 2 is in color, longer, and a lot more hallucogenic.
Threads - Forget The Day After. This is Britain's answer to making a post
apocalyptic movie. No apples, smiles or white shirts. Radiation poisoning,
plagues, riots, cannibalism, mutated offspring, rape - in other words,
what would REALLY happen after a nuclear war. Very disturbing.
Tokyo Decadence - Japanes pink film (ie - rape, kinky sex and violence)
that somehow found an American audience. Sleazy hooker meets a dominatrix
who humiliates and beats her into a better life.
In The Realm Of The Senses/ In the Realm Of Passion - Late 70's Japanese
pink films. The first one has a kinky married couple who can't control how
far they take their sex life and it winds up in murder and sexual
mutilation. Based on actual events! Passion is about a woman who kills her
husband to be with her kinky lover and is haunted by his ghost.
Totally Fucked Up/Doom Generation/Nowhere/Living End/Splendour - Greg
Araki's Teen Trilogy and his other two films. If you are looking for Gen X
movies full of sex and gore and violence with a gay nineties valley
sensibility, these are it. TFU is about a group of gay friends who make a
suicide pact to die if they can't find true love. DG is usually found in
the "Blockbuster Version" with 25%!!! of its running time missing. It is
about two guys and a girl who go on a cross counrty fucking/crime spree.
Nowhere is more plotless - group of friends, drugs, parties, death,
violence, and an alien that is abducting and probing everyone. Living End
is the most depressing and most serious. Two gay men have HIV and go on a
road trip to commit murders and suicide. Splendour is a complete 180.
While it still has 3somes, sex, violence and drugs, it's really a
slapstick comedy-homage to Buster Keaton-ish films. But if you liked the
other four you'll like this one. My advice - strt with DG if you want
straight up violence, sex, and Rose McGowans boobs. Start with LEnd if you
want really depressing drama, but without losing the violence or sex.
Traces Of Death 1,2,3 - the new series of death home movies. All
completely real, all never before seen, and you get a cheesy death metal
soundtrack for 2&3. But if you like real death, this is your shit.
Vampiros Lesbos - judging from the title, you can tell this is Jess
Franco's ultimate film. Vampires. Lesbians. Lesbian vampires. Vampoires
attacking lesbians turning them into lesbian vampires or Vampiros Lesbos.
Vengeance Is Mine - Japanese serial killer movie full of blood and
guts...from the 60's!! Very progressive and a must for any student of the
genre.
Videodrome - In David Cronenberg's most accomplished film, the bizarre
story angles surface and develop during James Woods' spiral into paranoia.
Virgin Machine - Very twisted Canadian lesbian film notable for having
stickers on the cover cuz the cover art has a nipple-y woman on it.
Waco: Rules Of Engagement - 3 hour documentary on what REALLY happened at
Waco. Interviews with survivors, ATF, newsmen, footage of the senate
hearings. You will believe it was murder if you watch this show.
Night Of The Living Dead Workprint - This is the 1990's theatrical version
we are talking about. Directed by goremiester Tom Savini, written buy
George Romero, this is the workprint with more gore and different story
twists, and mucho extra footage
War Room - documentary of behind the scenes Clinton's campaign for the
1992 presidency. VERY revealing.
Wild Style - original b-boy movie. If you like rap, get this film and
learn about it's roots. If you don't, um, well, you'll hate me if I sell
it to you so don't cuz it's ALL rap.
Zombie - aka Zombie 2 cuz Dawn Of The Dead was called Zombie in Europ cuz
they had Dario Argento's cut (which is for sale by the way). Anyways, this
Zombie is by Lucio Fulci and is about a group of scientists on an island
who meet zombies. Features very very graphic plank of wood through the eye
scene. Ends with the unforgettable ZombiesStreamingIntoManhattanOverThe
BridgeScene. And the scene where a zombie fights a shark!
and that's it. My eyes and back hurt and I have to piss. I hope you like
thousands of these so I can triple my collection and/or make some money.
Like I said, though, this isn't really it. I belong to a trading
collective so if you are looking for ANYTHING, especially pornos, anime,
Hong Kong action, foreign, classic, Hollywood mainstream, whatever, just
ask.

Nekromantik 1/2 - The infamous German productions involving sex with nasty
dead things. Watching this the only question is - how can you possibly
kiss someone covered in flies and rotting meat and stuff and not throw up?
i mean, how do these Germans make stuff like this and fecal porn and ...
stuff?
NIN Home Video - not of intrest to Americans I'm sure but this is the
double casette pack that was banned in Canada. One has concert footage and
one has videos including "Sin", "Gave Up" with Marilyn Manson, and the
uncut "Closer". Does not include the "Broken" serial killer stuff; that is
available on "Complete NIN Vids". I also have various NIN interviews,
concerts, and the same stuff for fellow Nothing employees Prick, Meat Beat
manifesto and, of course, Marilyn Manson.
Bring Me The Head Of Geraldo Rivera - short film about, um, the head of
Geraldo Rivera. Funny funny funny.
New York Underground Film Festival Year One/ Year Two - collection of
award winning short films including the infamous porn shot with an infared
camera. "Underground" defines these shorts to a T.
Total Movie DVDs - These come out with the magazine once every 2 months.
As of Jan 31,2000, there are 3 available. Filled with trailers of movies
that haven't hit the big screen yet, music videos, and DVD extras. Most
importantly, though, is the mass of short films. The Second Comeback is
about Jesus' return to Hollywood and his need to get a press agent and
launch a publicity campaign. With or without commentary. Troops is the
merger of Star Wars and Cops, heartily endorsed by George Lucas and god
damn funny. W or w/o com. Also, there's The Danciong Cow, Blow Me Up Tom,
The Best Man, The Freindly Cowboy, Battle Of The Sexes, and Rock N Roll
Frankenstien, but I haven't seen these yet. I will report on them when I
do.

Subject: Re: [MV] Ten Best Films of 2000
>Anyone else care to share their picks for
>the Best Films of 2000?
Sure, we will give it a go:
First off, I have only included movies I have seen so far. This means that
I have not included movies that I am sure I will love, such as Traffic, and
also means I did have to struggle to fill the list. Additionally, one of
my favourites from this year was Deterrence (would have made the top 5),
but according to the copyright, this movie was actually released in 1999.
Only problem is, it played in maybe three theatres, so I doubt anyone
actually saw it in 1999.
10 Me Myself I - watching it as I write this. Not as good as I hoped, but
you gotta have an Australian film on the list, and you could do much much
worse. Also, note this movie is NOT Me Myself and Irene, and for that we
should be eternally grateful:-) Additionally, Hollywood has shown their
most amazing speed ever in taking a great Australian film, and ripping it
off. (Family Man [?], the Nic Cage film)
9 X-Men - one of the best superhero films in a long time, perhaps since the
first Batman. I did mention that it was a struggle to find ten good 2000
films that I had actually seen:-)
8 The Whole Nine Yards - Hey, I thought it was funny, and it did rather
well at the box office. Imagine Grosse Point Blank meets Analyse This.
7 Almost Famous - I almost liked this:-) Not nearly as good as I was led
to believe, and I don't think it deserved the Golden Globes. Still,
difficult to fight Cameron Crowe, and I did enjoy it.
6 Dancer in the Dark - this is NOT a musical. It is rather a very sad
film, very depressing. I acutally did not "enjoy" the film, but feel I am
a better person for having seen it, and do not regret the time I put into
watching it.
5 Chicken Run - Nick Park does The Great Escape.
4 High Fidelity - Great story, great soundtrack, and John Cusack. Besides,
they made lists like this cool again.
3 Frequency - looked really really hokey in the ads, but this story worked.
Great family film, great sci-fi film, great action/adventure, just great
all around.
2 The Contender - The ending made this movie, made it all the more satisfying
and finally:
Wonder Boys - How on earth can the Hollywood Foreign Press consider this a
drama?? And how on earth could they give either Gladiator or Almost Famous
Golden Globes over this?? I thought this film was equal to American Beauty
(in my opinion, one of the few times the Academy got it right) until about
halfway thru. Then I thought this film blew American Beauty away. It
would be a crime if any other film took home the Oscar. I seriously think
this film not only ends up in my all time top 10, it finishes rather high
up. I have seen it twice, and can't wait to see it again. As for Marc,
who asked, it was pulled from video in January because of the Golden Globe
nomination (amongst other reasons), and is now rescheduled for 13 March.
And this is subject to change, I am sure, depending on what the Academy does.
As for Gladiator, What Lies Beneath (I was VERY disappointed in the
ending), and all the other favourites, sorry, but they just didn't cut it
for me.
