  47. I've seen "The siege" a couple of months ago.and I enjoyed it.
  48. I thought "The siege" only means occupied N.Y.city by the army (Bruce Willis
  49. commanded it).
  50. But my friend says that that title means the United States is surrounded by
  51. Islamic and etc.anti-American powers.
  52. I doubt that.I think "siege" means only about tacticaly limited place,not
  53. about such a wide-ranging, strategical area.

  86. Welsh actor Sir Anthony Hopkins is refusing to reprise his Oscar- winning 
  87. role as Hannibal Lecter in a prequel to Silence of the Lambs, The (1991).
  88.  
  89. The star believes he has taken the role as far as it will go - even though 
  90. he has been offered a reported $20 million to carry on the vicious 
  91. slaughtering.

  93. Producer Dino De Laurentiis is keen to make another thriller based on Thomas 
  94. Harris' first book containing Lecter, Red Dragon. But Hopkins has said to 
  95. close friends, "I think we've gone to the line with Hannibal, with the jokes 
  96. and the gore. I think people would think we were being greedy if we went on 
  97. any further."

  99. Red Dragon was previously adapted into the movie Manhunter (1986) by 
  100. director Michael Mann with British actor Brian Cox in the lead role as the 
  101. flesh-eating killer.

  103. De Laurentiis insists, "Everyone wants to see what happened before Lecter 
  104. was originally caught. There is room for more than Harris put in his first 
  105. novel. The entertainment factor is still very high, as is the demand."

  128. quite a few EYE POPPING scenes (Blood boiling !) ... and I just saw some 
  129. scenes from "Valentine" .. looks like a so-so slasher film but she 
  130. definately displays her impressive female charms in that one as well.  It 
  131. looked a lil' like "The CollEdge" actually ... only ... well ... you know !!

  152. and not a caricature of "cool."  There were several times when I could see
  153. that Brosnan is

  181. Bond.  The closest actualization of the Bond character was by the man who

  281. have anything against that if the movie is good of course ... If the movie 
  282. is awful (example : Showgirls) then it is a different story.

  322. "Siege" means an unrelenting attack.
  323.  
  324. In the movie in question, New York was considered "under siege" by
  325. terrorists, and thus the army came in to occupy it.  As this was,
  326. technically, a friendly army under martial law, they weren't laying siege
  327. to the city.
  328.  
  329. I would have to say that your friend is looking at the deeper meaning of
  330. the movie, where the American way of life was "under siege" by terrorists,
  331. regardless of scale.  However, to consider the US landmass as "under siege"
  332. is more of a metaphor, as something of that sheer size could not
  333. realistically be physically placed under siege.  It can be a difficult
  334. concept to get across in a foreign language, where even the movie was more
  335. interested in the mental and emotional reactions to events, than actually
  336. having a physical siege.
  337.  
  338. That means you understand the historic meaning of "under siege" where a
  339. village or castle is placed under continous attack, but here the filmmakers
  340. are looking at it more abstractly, and this can be difficult to get into
  341. another language.
  342.

  376. their films ... look at the movies coming out these days, the titles are 
  377. quite boring and forgettable in my opinion ...

  429. Good review, Alric !  Plus it is quite original as I don't remember anyone 
  430. saying they liked this film ...

  432. I was laughing reading James Berardinelli's review and he said he was 
  433. actually happy when there was a power failure at the theater so the movie 
  434. was stopped mid way through, this way he could go home early and not have to 
  435. suffer through the rest of it ... lol !!  Overall I think he gave the film 
  436. 1/4, not sure I would have to check !

  438. The guy is such a trooper he actually went to the theater again to see the 
  439. 2nd half even if it was clear to him he would HATE it ... Kudos to him !

  441. The film was shot near here (Montreal, Canada) and a lot of the effects were 
  442. made here as well, I hope they looked good ! ;-)

  444. As for myself I haven't seen it nor do I plan to ... I'd like to have 
  445. ELEVATED boots like those folks in the movie though ... KOOL !  I saw those 
  446. boots and I was laughing, I think this movie looks more like a comedy 
  447. actually.

  453. I rented BATTLEFIELD EARTH yesterday on DVD.  A friend of mine from work
  454. thought this was the most stupid movie he had ever seen.  The thing that
  455. stuck out most for him was how humans -- after generations of living in
  456. ignorance and want -- were able to teach themselves to fly U.S. military
  457. fighter jets -- jets that had been sitting in storage for a thousand
  458. years, yet were still operational -- in just two weeks.  His remarks
  459. made sense when I heard them, but I like science fiction movies and I
  460. know sometimes that critics tend to overreact.  His harsh criticism be
  461. damned, I had to see it.  Here's my opinion.
  462.  
  463. First, I agree with my friend.  That ending strained credibility.  But I
  464. have to say, up until that point -- a point which hovered in my
  465. consciousness as something to be dreaded the whole time I watched -- I
  466. thought this was a good movie.  So I was sad when the implausible
  467. conclusion was in fact as my friend described.  I had held out hope that
  468. my friend had missed some point that explained the sudden human
  469. proficiency.  Not so.  And that's too bad, because the look and feel of
  470. the film was unique, and deserved something better.
  471.  
  472. John Travolta played the malicious, ten-foot tall alien with campy
  473. relish and it was fun to watch.  He was having a good time, and I had a
  474. good time watching him.   I thought the crumbled cityscapes were vividly
  475. realized, establishing a bleak history better than words could tell.
  476. The aliens being ten feet tall was a different touch; most of the time
  477. science fiction movies make aliens with the same general size as we are,
  478. so making them giants was a stand-out stroke.  This was Travolta's baby,
  479. so why he allowed such an incredulous ending is a mystery, especially
  480. considering a guy like me can think up a better ending and I'm just your
  481. average Joe.  What the hell went wrong here?  The thing is, I liked the
  482. movie enough that I thought of a similar but more plausible ending
  483. without even trying.

  485. The more plausible ending would have involved that educational device,
  486. the thing which shot knowledge into Greener's eyes.  Greener walked away
  487. from that device knowing the language and history of the aliens.  It
  488. would not have been a stretch to include the aliens' skills in that
  489. knowledge base, such as operating their fighter crafts.  Then instead of
  490. having the humans stumble on a U.S. arsenal -- an absurdly PRISTINE U.S.
  491. arsenal -- the humans could have taken over an alien arsenal.  The thing
  492. is, I enjoyed this movie enough to care for a better ending.  I didn't
  493. get as insulted as my friend did.  I was letdown by the ending.  It put
  494. too much on the filmgoer, asking him to suspend too much disbelief.
  495.  
  496. In the end, I decided to say I liked the film, giving it a 3.5/5.  It
  497. doesn't rank among the great sci-fi efforts, but it gets points for
  498. heart.  I hear Travolta is wanting to make a sequel, which means despite
  499. the negative reaction to the first one, this saga must be something he
  500. believes in.  Maybe he thinks that later it will be revisited by critics
  501. and seen as a worthy contribution to our sci-fi film canon.  Sometimes
  502. films come out to excoriating reviews, then the film is later revisited
  503. and opinions change.  Maybe Travolta was looking to sell action
  504. figures.  I noticed that there was no foul language or blatant sexual
  505. situations, and maybe Travolta was looking to make the Star Wars of the
  506. new millennium.  That would explain his disregard for plausibility: It
  507. was intended for children.

  532. Uhh....  Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a literal translation of its chinese
  533. title and reflects the Chinese syntax.  What sounds cool in English is actually
  534. quite plain and common place in chinese.
  535.  
  536. As for movie titles,  I could care less.  I've discovered most movie titles
  537. simply stink, irregardless of the quality of the film.

  765. If you think Patriot Games is a great movie, read the book!!

  767. I had a friend who got me started on the Clancy novels (after simply being
  768. blown away by Red October).  We watched the movie first, then I read the
  769. book, because I was told I would be sorely disappointed in the movie if I
  770. read the book first.
  771.  
  772. Now, no movie is the same as the book, simply impossible.  But the
  773. underlaying plot was simply mangled in the making of the movie.  Patriot
  774. Games is a prequel to Red October, and works best when viewed as that.
  775. When set up as the follow-up, it simply doesn't work as well.
  776.  
  777. C&PD was about equal as a movie, maybe a bit better than Patriot Games, but
  778. the book was one of the weakest in the series.
  779.  
  780. Lots of good books, and they would be worthy of a franchise, had they been
  781. made in a timely manner. Unfortunately, the bankruptcy of Carolco (?), who
  782. held the rights to all future movies, hurt them badly.  And, with the speed
  783. of change in today's International world, most of the books are out of date.

  1003. spoken when the story is set in Mexico ! Also Jim Jarmush in Ghost dog and that french guy !!  So original !!

  1266. I actually watched it twice (my wife wanted to see it, too, and I caught
  1267. the last half of it).  My opinion is it is bad, but it is bad like Death
  1268. Race 2000 or Defcon 4.  So bad that it is almost enjoyable.  This is
  1269. different from Speed 2, which is two hours of my life that I will never get
  1270. back.  That was bad bad, this is almost good bad, and may go on to become a
  1271. cult classic.

  1282. was written by L Ron Hubbard, who founded the religion that Travolta

  1385. doing his lil' martial arts routines, jumping off buildings, etc.  Biehn was 
  1386. over the top a bit though ... I don't know ... It was shot here in Montreal 
  1387. and directed by Christian Duguay, french canadian director (The assignment, 
  1388. Mother's boy, The story of Joan of Ark, Screamers ... etc.)  I liked most of 
  1389. his movies, except Screamers that was AWFUL !!
