  213. 1. Mallrats (nothing beats the 'stinkpalm')<BR>
  214. 2. Dogma (Jay and Silent Bob rock in this one)<BR>
  215. 3. Clerks (a movie with no action but a sweeeeeet script makes the <BR>
  216. piece a classic)<BR>
  217. 4. Chasing Amy (by no means a bad film, it just gets a little mushy <BR>
  218. at times. And besides, Joey Lauren Adams rocks)<BR>

  220. Of the other comedies mentioned, I reckon Mighty Aphrodite has to be <BR>
  221. up there with the funniest, if only for the bumbling Woody Allen and <BR>
  222. the delightful Mira Sorvino.<BR>

  224. Don't forget Major League as well!! The sequel wasn't that bad <BR>
  225. either, even though Major League: Back to The Minors is one of the <BR>
  226. worst films I have ever seen.<BR>

  301. I think the intention was to make a comment on the
  302. relative insignificance (and absurdity) of all of
  303. those characters and probably life in general.  I was
  304. thinking the "cataclysm" could have happened a bit
  305. sooner though. :~)   Very long and overblown, but
  306. still pretty good though.

  498. I read an interesting interview with P.T. Anderson where he says that while
  499. working on the screenplay, he read something about a rain of frogs and thought
  500. that it would "look cool" in his movie.  Later on, somebody told him about the
  501. Biblical significance (Exodus 8:2) and he decided to try and incorporate that
  502. as well (hence the recurring 82's in the film).
  503.  
  504. But to summarize: the frogs at the end are there because the director thought
  505. they'd look cool.

  530. Actually that really lowers my opinion of the film
  531. then since most of the movie seemed to be a collage of
  532. the coolest little stories "P.T." had collected
  533. anyway.  How disappointing then that the climax that
  534. seemed to "rain" on all of the mess was just another
  535. cool scene too.  I liked the movie but there was
  536. definitely a stink on it- that must have been it.

  562. I just watched the world is not enough 007 and it was awesome, the sound 
  563. effects and speacial effects were great. But in the next 007 movie, desmond 
  564. llewyn is not there cause he is dead, now he was a big add on to the movies 
  565. with comments like: OH grow up 007, or he would just give Bond those cool 
  566. weapons, oh well, we all will miss him(hopefully)

  684. better. Roger moore was good but those movies missed the bond theme, and 
  685. Sean was great while George Lazenby was bad.

  730. The Blair Witch Project. It reminds me of a time not too long ago when I
  731. couldn't sit through any movie that wasn't (in my mind) following a logical
  732. plot or had glaring holes in it. I was really missing out! So I had to force
  733. myself to give these movies a chance. Recently I've enjoyed seeing movies
  734. like Frequency for what it is.....fun

  764. releases in 2001, but Myers says he wants to put off
  765. production because the script is "unworkable." Following the
  766. blockbuster success of last year's "Austin Powers: The Spy

  768. Hollywood's best-paid actors. But he issued a statement
  769. saying he could not "in good conscience accept $20 million

  795. will be worth my money and time. If only Nic Cage had such ideals,

  797. The downside is, of course, that Universal will try to ream Myers
  798. six ways from Sunday insisting he make the flick. If worst comes to
  799. worst, he should take their money, make an awful film, and tell the

  870. condemned for its stupidity and its willingness to crank out garbage and hope

  905. unusual categories, and he won the award for "Best Villain" and also won as

  987. Movie screens are wider in proportion to their height than are TV screens.  In order to
  988. display these wider pictures on your TV, one of two things needs to happen:

  990. 1) Portions of the right and/or left side are lopped off.  This is known as Pan-and-scan
  991.    because there are artificial (ie, not director-intended) frame movements to keep up
  992.    with the action within the movie frame.
  993.  
  994. 2) The entire image is shrunk proportionally so that it fits in your TV screen from
  995.    side to side.  This creates areas where their is no picture at all on your TV
  996.    screen towards the top and bottom.  This is known as letterbox because it appears
  997.    as though you are peering through a mail slot (which have similar dimensions to
  998.    movie screens.  Widescreen and Letterbox are synonomous.

  1071. to experience the film in it's entirety. You see, films are shot
  1072. on a much wider format, from 16mm to 70mm, usually at
  1073. approximately 16:9 aspect ratio... which, if you have the funds,
  1074. DVD allows you to view this in full, actual 16:9, but requires an
  1075. outrageously expensive 16:9 ration projection television set.
  1076.  
  1077. However, originally starting on Laser Disc & VHS, letter-boxing
  1078. is a method of transfering the entire film to home video, without
  1079. cutting pieces off, resulting in what most refer to as the
  1080. "annoying black bars at the top & bottom of the screen"...
  1081. otherwise, video are transfered using pan & scan, which is done
  1082. by a technical editor running the film through a viewing machine,
  1083. and they maneuvere a 4:3 aspect ratio (standard TV) to crop
  1084. the movie as it goes, selecting to keep only part of what the
  1085. director originally shot... in a sense, butchering the art...

  1206. Many movies are letterboxed for the credits, since the text often will spill
  1207. of the screen if the film was panned-and-scanned.  After that, the film
  1208. reverts back to pan-and-scan.  For rented videos, this is the standard:
  1209. letterboxed presentations have to be sought out and bought on video, or found
  1210. on DVD (where widescreen presentation is the standard, not the exception).

  1226. Nope, definately your imagination:-)  Well, more specifically, you get used
  1227. to it, and after awhile, don't even know it's there.
  1228.  
  1229. Last year, there was an X-Files episode shot and shown in letterbox format.
  1230.  After the show was over (when I remembered that it was supposed to be
  1231. letterboxed), I had to ask around to see if it really was, as I completely
  1232. failed to notice.  (As my first choice is always letterbox, I am just so
  1233. used to it).

  1235. Just had a customer in my store saying that he can't get used to the
  1236. "squared-off" picture on DVD.  I was going to tell him, no, the video is
  1237. "squared-off", the DVD is the way it is SUPPOSED to be:-)  Sorry, but
  1238. personally, if you are going to complain about the letterbox effect, you
  1239. don't deserve to enjoy watching movies on DVD.  Go back to video, if you
  1240. want to watch a butchered movie:-)

  1242. There are some good arguments for watching a movie on DVD.  First time I
  1243. REALLY noticed the difference, I watched the "regular" version of
  1244. Mission:Impossible, followed by the letterbox version (Tom Cruise is a BIG
  1245. fan of letterbox).  The difference is amazing.
  1246.  
  1247. Second thing is one of my friends took his daughter to see Grease when it
  1248. was re-released to the theatres a few years ago.  For days, all she could
  1249. talk about was the "two coaches".  She had only seen the movie on telly,
  1250. and in the scene where Travolta and Co are being yelled at by the head
  1251. football coach, she never realised that the assistant was behind him.  Just
  1252. a small thing, but it converted her entire family to letterbox.
  1253.  
  1254. Best argument is reserved for guys.  In Double Jeopardy!, in the one sex
  1255. scene, well, let's just say you get to see a LOT more of Ashley Judd in
  1256. widescreen than you do in pan-and-scan:-)
