  170. movies are commonly late on this part of South East Asia.

  172. I'm still wondering, is that movie a real documentary 
  173. (which means those three teenagers were really missing), 
  174. or just another thriller fiction that designed as a 
  175. believable pseudo-documentary?

  541. Well, TECHNICALLY, I agree with Oz. And this is why:

  543. Right now I am enjoying these things.  But from past experience here, I
  544. suspect I would be better off subbing myself, and just having you post us
  545. those instructions.

  547. Why??  Well beyond the fact that we have had this EXACT same argument
  548. before (the results of which I will get to), I think it would be better to
  549. guarentee either that we will get this or not get this.  Besides, for some
  550. unknown reason, it seems that the members of this list think that ONE
  551. message is bad, but *20* messages arguing about said message is good:-)

  596. 1 - I like this list.  Of all the list's I've ever subscribed to, this is
  597. the one I've never left. Why??  The list has taken on a personality all off

  600. get advertised by PCWORLD or something, which would probably bring it to a
  601. grinding halt, but right now, it's good, and I like it.

  603. 2 - Just got done watching "That Thing You Do" on VH1.  One thing struck me
  604. about this movie - Liv Tyler.  Armageddon had the same effect.  I didn't
  605. like the movie, but every time Liv hit the screen she grabbed it and didn't
  606. let go.  Now, being a male, after watching Armageddon (which I didn't like)
  607. my best guess was, I was simply struck by her undeniable beauty.   After
  608. watching "That Thing You Do", I'm not so sure.  She stole every scene in
  609. that movie, as (I thought) she did in Armageddon.

  611. I think this lady is a real star.  Greda Garbo, Mariloyn Monroe, and Ingrid
  612. Bergman come to mind.  Is she on the same level??

  638. that the end of WWII will soon be near.  Ironies of ironies is that Life is

  646. Finally - a good movie - almost forgot what they looked like!  Based on the
  647. play 'Honeymoon Suite' and written by the same writer (Roger Rueff) this
  648. movie is basically about a sales pitch.  Kevin Spacey and Danny DeVito are
  649. honestly superb as two experienced marketting reps who are trying to set up
  650. a party so that they can meet the big kahuna of another company and give him
  651. their sales pitch for their industrial lubrication.  There is a lot of
  652. clever and sarcastic humour throughout which gives a good balance to some of
  653. the religious belief questions raised.  Entirely entertaining in every way.

  656. Star Interaction:  When asked about the shooting schedule Kevin Spacey said
  657. that it took 16 days to shoot this film.  What is even more amazing is that
  658. he said that he finished shooting American Beauty and 5 days later he began

  660. in the daytime and at night he filmed The Big Kahuna!!  Cool and funny guy -
  661. he apologized for being in a 'silly mood!'

  667. I think to truly enjoy this film that you would have to be somewhat
  668. interested in the subject matter - hip hop - which I am not.  That is not to

  670. never really found myself bored.  A lot of 'brand' names appear in this
  671. flick - Claudia Shiffer, Robert Downey Jr., Mike Tyson (eerily playing
  672. himself), Ben Stiller and Brooke Shields.  65% for not boring me.

  696. Tenant.  An alternate title could be Henry: Portrait of a Somnambulist - due
  697. to the fact that Henry Thomas's (E.T.) character was a sleep walker.
  698. Entertaining - but a movie like this requires more explanation.  71%.

  725. Watching these shorts made me wonder if they were an exercise for a class
  726. project.  It is films like these that give a bad name to 'artsy' films.  It
  727. is with films like these in mind that people decide not to go see 'good' art
  728. cinema like Run Lola Run, Twin Falls Idaho or Opposite of Sex.  Sorry -
  729. didn't mean to be so negative but it just amazes me to think that so many
  730. people had to believe in these films to get them made and this was the final
  731. product. Fail.

  737. Part of the midnight madness selections this is a poorly made documentary
  738. that would have played better as a one hour episode of Biography instead of
  739. a two full hour film.  John C. Holmes as you may know (and I'm sure you know
  740. who I'm talking to) is the biggest porn star that ever lived - and when I
  741. say biggest - I mean biggest...if you know what I mean.  The film is
  742. interviews with the women he's been with or married and people involved with
  743. him in his 'professional' life.  Too many times the same thing is said over
  744. and over and you know how annoying it can be when someone says something
  745. over and over too many times - it can get really annoying - too many
  746. times...  Go back to the editting room, make some cuts (ouch! I'm talking
  747. the film here)- and while you're at it find some sort of narrative flow and
  748. you've got yourself something interesting.  Fail.

  754. Ghost Dog (Forest Whitaker) is a modern day samurai/hitman for the mob.  His
  755. character is fairly uncharismatic and unethusiastic which lessened my
  756. enjoyment of the film.  When Ghost Dog kills the wrong guy he has the entire
  757. mob after him.  Fairly entertaining but also fairly pedantic - connect the
  758. dots.  No surprises here but I am told that if you're into philosophy and
  759. Japanes literature then you would enjoy it a lot more.  68%.

  761. Star Interaction: When asked whether he thought his film glorified killing
  762. or not Jarmusch replied by saying that he thinks it is ridiculous that the
  763. imagination of one person should be held responsible for other people's
  764. actions.  Good answer!

  770. Set in a traditional Japanese environment this tale focuses on the love
  771. between Yukio and Rin and a mysterious stranger and Rin.  The tale seems
  772. incomprehensible at first but it unfolds rather nicely as the plot takes a
  773. scary turn as someone ends up at the bottom of a very deep well.  Good music
  774. and pace make this pretty entertaining.  I might have even enjoyed it more
  775. if it weren't for my ignorance of Japanese culture.  A dark and fun movie
  776. which is a departure for Shinya who was at the festival a few years ago with
  777. a more visceral Tokyo Fist.  82%.

  796. Denmark and Romania this is a very well crafted story that will slap you in
  797. the face a few times as you try to put the puzzle together.  I can say
  798. nothing more.  87%

  997. It is movies like these that remind me why I like movies so much - deep,
  998. rich characters, well paced and totally crazy!  Francis takes care of his
  999. crippled mother and after 'saving' the girl across the street from a mugging
  1000. he becomes implicated in a relationship - that's really about the only way
  1001. to phrase it!  Francis questions his faith in God and this leads to some
  1002. crazy visuals as his voyeurism forces him to question his faith in his
  1003. 'girlfriend.'  Great film with some scenes that will blow you away!  91%.

  1005. Star Interaction:  I asked Mark Hanlon if he had seen Roman Polanki's The
  1006. Tenant and he said that he was greatly influenced by Polanski - as there is
  1007. a few scenes that 'borrow' from The Tenant.  Nothing really wrong with that
  1008. as he made it work in his movie too.  Patted him on the back and told him it
  1009. was great and he thanked me!

  1022. rubbish or not.  At times it is cartoony while at other times it seems that
  1023. they are trying to solve the mysteries of life.  Nick Nolte does do a good
  1024. job as he attempts to repress his desire to wear woman's clothing.  This
  1025. movie is nonsense.  Fail.

  1032. Woo-like shoot 'em up but ends up being an unspectaular comedy.  The 2 or 3
  1033. action scenes were ok as were the 2 or 3 laughs throughout - but nothing
  1034. more.  60%.

  1040. The only animated flick at the fest this year and it definitely has a
  1041. grandiose and epic feel to it.  It starts off with a bang - an amazingly
  1042. animated demon battles our protagonist and leaves him with a curse that will
  1043. eventually take over his body and kill him unless he can find the forest god
  1044. and beg him for a cure.  Many subplots and characters keep the action moving
  1045. but I am sure that some things might have been lost through the translation
  1046. (even though the translation was written by Sandman scribe Niel Gaiman).
  1047. This is a feast for Anime fans though I am sure that they would prefer (as I
  1048. would) the subtitled version rather than the more 'accessible' American
  1049. version which boasts the voice talents of Billy Bob Thornton, Gillian
  1050. Anderson, Claire Danes and Jada Pinkett Smith.  It is odd to see a Japanese
  1051. character with a Japanese name but sounding like the country hick - Billy
  1052. Bob Thornton!  Very well done though - 80%.
  1053.  
  1054. Star Sighting:  For the Anime fans - Hayao Miyazaki was there and he
  1055. received the only full standing ovation I have seen all week. He said that
  1056. he thinks that this film will be apreciated more in the future than at
  1057. present.  Time will tell.

  1059. I was planning on seeing the final Midnight Madness, Gamera 3, but I was so
  1060. exhausted that I gave up!

  1124. watch it this afternoon and was suitably impressed. I can't wait to see 
  1125. it in the cinema. one thing I didn't catch though was what was the thing 
  1126. wrapped up in the bundle of sticks that was outside the tent the night 
  1127. after josh disappeared?
  1128. Very very realistic and reminded me of Texas Chainsaw and the original 
  1129. Evil Dead for it's impact.
  1130. I can easily understand how some people could be mistaken in thinking 
  1131. there was some reality to the project as it rang very true and real.

  1157. We only had one chance to watch it in the movies a few weeks back and it 
  1158. was without a doubt the absolute worst excuse for a movie we have ever 
  1159. seen. There was nothing exciting or scary about the movie at all. 50% of 
  1160. the dialog started with the letter F. Not that we are prudes but the dialog 
  1161. sounded like it was written by an eight year old. We did not have to wait 
  1162. in line to get in but did have to wait in the refund line when it was over. 
  1163. Three couples were ahead of us in line demanding a refund. We got passes 
  1164. for another show of our choice. The theater manager said he had more 
  1165. requests for refunds on this movie than on any other film since the theater 
  1166. had opened.

  1204. Some people agree with you, some, like me, loved it.  I put it in my top 10
  1205. favorite movies ever.  And there was no script.

  1217. I had the great opportunity to see American Beauty about 3 weeks ago at a
  1218. student screening in the Westwood Village. The cast, producers and director
  1219. were present and there was a Question and Answer session following the
  1220. screening. This is a truly special film. A film that defies any attempt at
  1221. categorizing. American Beauty runs the gamut of emotions, from happiness and
  1222. elation to bitterness, contempt and violent anger. The acting is superb, and
  1223. it is more than a fitting compliment to the crisp and intelligent script,
  1224. and wonderful direction. Dreamworks is very proud of this film, and they
  1225. have a reason to be...
  1226. American Beauty 
  1227. opened in New York and Los Angeles on Sept 15th
  1228. opens in 700 additional theaters nationwide, on Oct 1st
  1229. Go see it, the early Oscar buzz on this one is more than deserved...

  1256. My God I can't believe there are people out there with absolutely no 
  1257. taste in movies.
  1258. This was without a doubt one of the finest pieces of work ever to be laid 
  1259. down on celluloid, so how you can justify standing in line for a refund 
  1260. boggles the mind. in fact no cinema should have to refund a patron for 
  1261. any movie, imagine taking a bus or a plane and after the flight trying to 
  1262. get your money back because the driver or pilot didn't do the job you 
  1263. expected.
  1264. If you don't like a film you don't deserve to get your money back ever, 
  1265. just go home and complain about it to the walls.
  1266. and yes you are definitely prudes if you thought the language was 
  1267. graphic, haven't seen South Park the movie yet have you?
