  147. You could compare the first one to the Kurt Russell movie, Solider, which 
  148. (although it has uncapitalized interesting and unexploited aspects and 
  149. acting) makes Universal Soldier look like a Kubrick masterpiece.

  188. LOS ANGELES (AP) - "The Sixth Sense" spooked $24.1 million out of
  189. moviegoers at the weekend box office, becoming the first film since
  190. the "Phantom Menace" to hold the No. 1 spot for three consecutive
  191. weeks, according to industry estimates Sunday. The supernatural
  192. thriller - starring Bruce Willis as a therapist treating a boy who
  193. sees dead people - has grossed $107.7 million in three weeks.
  194. Different movies had debuted in first place for nine straight
  195. weekends since "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" fell to
  196. second place in June. The Hollywood satire "Bowfinger," meanwhile,
  197. held on to second place this weekend. Starring Steve Martin as a
  198. wannabe director who secretly films an action star played by Eddie
  199. Murphy, "Bowfinger" earned $10.7 million in its second week for a
  200. total of $35.9 million. "Mickey Blue Eyes," a romantic-comedy
  201. starring Hugh Grant as a man who discovers his fiancee's father is a
  202. mobster, opened in third place with a respectable $10.4 million.
  203. However, two other new films debuted in the bottom of the top 10. The
  204. Jean-Claude Van Damme sci-fi adventure "Universal Soldier: The
  205. Return" opened weakly with $4.7 million for seventh place.
  206.  
  207. "Teaching Mrs. Tingle," a black-comedy about teens who hold their
  208. teacher hostage, was hampered by bad reviews and criticism of its
  209. violent content. The film earned a paltry $3.5 million for tenth
  210. place. "People expected 'Tingle' to do really well, but teens don't
  211. want to see any comedy that has a dark theme. They want lighthearted
  212. fair or horror films," said Robert Bucksbaum, a movie analyst with
  213. Reel Source Inc. He said "The Sixth Sense" has done well because it
  214. takes its somber subject matter seriously, yet its PG-13 rating opens
  215. it up to a broad audience. "It's getting incredible repeat business,"
  216. Bucksbaum said. "Nothing else out there is even coming close." The
  217. thriller also has a surprise ending that prompted moviegoers to see
  218. it multiple times, said Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney,
  219. which released the film. "Audiences are coming back for the ending,"
  220. he said, adding that a lot of people want to know "how they got me."
  221. The Julia Roberts-Richard Gere romance "Runaway Bride" was fourth
  222. with $9.3 million, and "The Blair Witch Project" slipped to fifth
  223. place with $7.1 million. The low-budget shocker has grossed $120.5
  224. million, since it opened in wide release four weeks ago, making it
  225. one the most successful independent films in history, Bucksbaum said.

  230. acknowledged responsibility for Monday's fatal accident during a
  231. Paris shoot for "Taxi 2," the sequel to the hit French action movie.
  232. Driver Gilbert Bataille made a second stunt run up a raised launch
  233. ramp, video footage shows, sailed far past a battle tank, overshot
  234. boxes positioned to soften his landing and veered toward the camera
  235. crew. "Everyone got clear at the last second," police said, "except
  236. the cameraman (Alain Dutartre), who kept his eye glued to the
  237. viewfinder." Dutartre died of massive injuries.

  241. LOS ANGELES (AP) - Miramax Films picked the worst possible time -
  242. back-to-school season - to release "Teaching Mrs. Tingle," a black
  243. comedy about teens who hold their mean-spirited teacher hostage,
  244. education groups say. The movie's opening on Friday came just four
  245. days after classes resumed at Columbine High School in Colorado for
  246. the first time since two students gunned down 12 schoolmates and a
  247. teacher and wounded 23 others before killing themselves last spring.
  248. "The timing is really unfortunate," said Kathleen Lyons, spokeswoman
  249. for the National Education Association. "We find it appalling that
  250. Miramax would release a movie about kids hunting down teachers."
  251. Miramax did not immediately return phone calls from The Associated
  252. Press, but sent a fax detailing the plot and a comment from
  253. first-time director Kevin Williamson, who also wrote the horror
  254. screenplays, to "Scream" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer."
  255.  
  256. "I hope audiences find this movie to be funny, wicked and incredibly
  257. entertaining, but in addition I hope they take away the idea that we
  258. have all had bad experiences that can later become assets in life.
  259. You can turn the tables," he said. "Mrs. Tingle" stars Helen Mirren
  260. as a malevolent teacher who is kidnapped by three students.
  261. Originally called "Killing Mrs. Tingle," the movie's title was toned
  262. down after the Columbine shootings. The teacher is not killed,
  263. although she's injured and several scenes involve a menacing
  264. crossbow. Since Columbine, the entertainment industry has faced
  265. criticism that the violence in films, television and video games
  266. contributes to real-life violence. President Clinton and Congress
  267. have appealed to Hollywood to show more restraint.

  279. I'd have to agree. "The Iron Giant" is probably the most-overlooked gem 
  280. of the Summer. It's currently the fourth-highest-rated movie on 
  281. FlickPicks (http://www.flickpicks.com), yet it has languished at the box 
  282. office (about $15M to date) while people flock to see dreck like Wild 
  283. Wild West ($110M+), The Haunting ($90M) and Inspector Gadget ($80M).  And 
  284. don't even get me started on "The Blair Witch Project" .....

  295. I got a whole bunch of new movies on the weekend including the 
  296. abovementioned mummy flick and all I can say is "What the F**k was that 
  297. all about?". As a film I thought it a bit disjointed, with scenes 
  298. peppered in that weren't explained and left you wondering what just 
  299. happened. and then the ending I could not believe, I can't remember the 
  300. last time I saw a film where all the leads were killed and the bad guy 
  301. survived, does this mean we are going to get a sequel? All in all it 
  302. wasn't even a touch on the Brendan Fraser Mummy film which was a much 
  303. more enjoyable film, in which you could see that the director went to 
  304. great lengths to provide a decent finished product ( to me it felt almost 
  305. like an "Indiana Jones Lite").

  317. I think movie goers are getting too big for their britches, we all seem 
  318. to want to see remakes of our favorite shows but when they arrive we boo 
  319. and hiss and say it was rubbish. In the last few years Mission 
  320. Impossible, Lost in Space, and now WWW have all been panned for a 
  321. multitude of reasons and yet the critics are all wrong as each of those 
  322. movies delivered exactly what they should have. I suppose when the 
  323. charlies angel's flick arrives we will all moan because it is so unlike 
  324. the original, that is the point isn't it to bring you back to the 
  325. carefree days of youth but at the same time they have to entertain the 
  326. audience we have become. could you imagine what LIS and WWW would have 
  327. been like if they had stayed true to the original ( and LIS was almost a 
  328. carbon copy of the first few episodes of the original series), and used 
  329. props and effects that were common at the time. they would have sucked 
  330. big banana's.
  331. I don't know what people expect, I suppose the Phantom Menace showed that 
  332. a lot of the people who claim to be star wars fans really aren't or they 
  333. wouldn't have complained about TPM. I loved it and thought it couldn't 
  334. have possibly been any better and look forward to the next two with great 
  335. relish. So people who didn't like the movies I"ve listed above are more 
  336. likely just vocal fans of the original's rather than true fans who will 
  337. accept changes to an already successful formula.

  433. I don't know how many people are clamoring for remakes of old tv shows. I 
  434. don't. I think remaking old TV shows is Hollywood's mistaken attempt to 
  435. capitalize on nostalgia, as well as forsake the effort it takes to come up 
  436. with original screenplays. So, we are too big for our britches to expect for 
  437. some intelligent and original products.

  454. I agree with this concept wholeheartedly. And, that is exactly what I would 
  455. expect from such movies. The point most people make in disliking the movies, 
  456. is that the movies themselves don't entertain. I agree that they should take 
  457. the original concept, but then they should move on in new or modern 
  458. directions. Presently, they just take the old concept and try to force in 
  459. formulaic plot points and glitzy special effects.

  474. Now, your Star Wars argument seems to be the main point, but it's kind of 
  475. like apples and oranges with regards to the first part of your post. Phantom 
  476. Menace was not a remake. It was a new product, and it attempted to somewhat 
  477. capitalize on the original Star Wars nostalgia. (So, I do concede that this 
  478. is the main similarity to your first points)
  479.  
  480. But, I do resent the notion that as a fan of the original trilogy, I should 
  481. love TPM. I liked it, but I thought it was laden with problems and story 
  482. conflicts. I do think it was overhyped, and it could have been better. even 
  483. so, I do look forward to the next two movies, somewhat.

  491. I am not a vocal fan of the original MI or Lost in Space. I am indifferent 
  492. to both. I didn't think very much of either movie, but I did think that they 
  493. could have been so much better than they actually were. I personally see no 
  494. problem with changes to the old formulas. That goes back to the earlier 
  495. point you mentioned.

  633. you said that doesn't make it a " good movie." The DVDs and Videos that
  634. rank on my shelf are the ones that break away from that infectious "movie"
  635. moniker, and break into the art of "film." My top ten list would include

  637. 1.  (tie) 2001: a space odyssey and A Clockwork Orange
  638.     Two classics, great films, they have a lasting power much longer than
  639. Jaws.  Who can forget Dave Bowman's epic star gate sequence or Alex
  640. DeLarge's rape scene of the writer's wife.  The peak of Stanley Kubrick's
  641. genius.
  642.  
  643. 2.  Brazil
  644.     Terry Gilliam's Orwellian comedy Brazil is a fantastic film, an
  645. entertaining and intellectually stimulating masterpiece that continues to
  646. amaze me.  Not my favorite Gilliam film, but his best.
  647.  
  648. 3.  Bottle Rocket
  649.     Wes Anderson's great film is still more clever than Rushmore and
  650. funnier.  A touching and wonderful, characters whose personas you want to
  651. know first hand
  652.  
  653. 4. 12 Monkeys
  654.     Terry Gilliam's haunting, scary, and visually amazing film is a sight
  655. to behold.  It is an esteemed privelage to understand this film.
  656.  
  657. 5.  Reservoir Dogs
  658.     Tarantino's lone masterpiece, a stylized crime noir unself-conscious,
  659. and acting and dialogue heavy.  A treat, replay value much higher than
  660. Pulp Fiction.
  661.  
  662. 6.  Rushmore
  663.     A good old fashioned american comedy, rich in character development
  664. and story.  A great film, will be remembered.
  665.  
  666. 7. (tie) Seven/The Game
  667.     David Fincher is next Hitchcock, his rollercoaster performances and
  668. haunting stories are great films.  A true master-in-the-making.
  669.  
  670. 8.  Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
  671.     Hilarious Terry Gilliam-Johnny Depp vehicle is a fun movie to watch,
  672. and a great film to behold.
  673.  
  674. 9.  (tie) Alien/The Shining
  675.     Two horror classics from two masters of the film art, capitalize on
  676. the unseen and the unkown to draw an audience.
  677.  
  678. 10.  The Evil Dead Trilogy]
  679.     Ironic horror satires unlike any other films out there.  Bruce Cambell
  680. is the greatest.

  1331. I think movie goers are getting too big for their britches, we all seem
  1332. to want to see remakes of our favorite shows but when they arrive we boo
  1333. and hiss and say it was rubbish. In the last few years Mission
  1334. Impossible, Lost in Space, and now WWW have all been panned for a
  1335. multitude of reasons and yet the critics are all wrong as each of those
  1336. movies delivered exactly what they should have. I suppose when the
  1337. charlies angel's flick arrives we will all moan because it is so unlike
  1338. the original, that is the point isn't it to bring you back to the
  1339. carefree days of youth but at the same time they have to entertain the
  1340. audience we have become. could you imagine what LIS and WWW would have
  1341. been like if they had stayed true to the original ( and LIS was almost a
  1342. carbon copy of the first few episodes of the original series), and used
  1343. props and effects that were common at the time. they would have sucked
  1344. big banana's.
  1345. I don't know what people expect, I suppose the Phantom Menace showed that
  1346. a lot of the people who claim to be star wars fans really aren't or they
  1347. wouldn't have complained about TPM. I loved it and thought it couldn't
  1348. have possibly been any better and look forward to the next two with great
  1349. relish. So people who didn't like the movies I"ve listed above are more
  1350. likely just vocal fans of the original's rather than true fans who will
  1351. accept changes to an already successful formula.
