  42. I kind of understand where he was coming from though.  The movie was supposed
  43. to be more of a psychological thriller, not a Scream type scary movie where
  44. it's so gory and scary you have to close your eyes.  I never really experienced
  45. any sense of scariness like that, and I would too be interested in knowing what
  46. age group this person is in.  It's possibly that if it's at a child's age, they
  47. found it scary, but didn't understand it all.  Either way, it's popular for
  48. different people for different reasons.

  290. I loved the Matrix and Sixth Sense.  Both had good
  291. endings. 
  292. During the Sixth Sense I thought Bruce Willis's
  293. character seemed a little shallow, but at the end it
  294. all fell into place and I was thrilled. I like a movie
  295. that keeps me talking and thinking afterwards.  The
  296. "boy's" character-name slips my mind too.  In real
  297. life his name is Haley Joel Osment. I'm sure we'll be
  298. seeing more of him.  Do you think he should be
  299. nominated for an Oscar?  
  300. Anyone else venture a guess on that?

  450. LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Will Smith and Robert Redford are trying to
  451. hammer out a deal for Smith to star in the golfing picture "The
  452. Legend of Bagger Vance," sources have confirmed. Redford will produce
  453. and direct the $70-million project, which is expected to begin
  454. shooting next month in Georgia. Smith would play the title character,
  455. a sagacious black caddie who doles out advice to linksmen during a
  456. 1931 golf tournament. The serious role would be a departure for the
  457. comedically slanted action hero. The story is based on Steven
  458. Pressfield's 1995 novel of the same name.

  462. The Bruce Willis supernatural thriller The Sixth Sense
  463. earned $25.8 million during its debut weekend, beating
  464. out the independent powerhouse The Blair Witch
  465. Project for the No. 1 spot at the box office. Blair managed
  466. a healthy $24.5 million take in what was its second
  467. weekend in wide release, finishing No. 2 overall.

  469. Blair has now passed the $80 million mark and will likely
  470. complete its U.S. domestic run with ticket sales of more
  471. than $125 million. Meanwhile, Deep Blue Sea picked up

  475. Mystery Men opened in the No. 6 spot with a modest $10
  476. million, while the critically acclaimed animated SF film The

  479. place finish, and The Haunting scared up $6.3 million to
  480. take the No. 8 position.

  485. Alien Toy Box, an SF children's film by writer Steven
  486. Elkins. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dean

  490. Elkins' story is centered around a young boy who finds a
  491. toy box in his back yard that was left behind by an alien
  492. child during a visit to Earth. The discovery of the box
  493. leads to a magical encounter for the young Earthling and
  494. helps him mend his relationship with his father.

  497. together elements of E.T. and The Iron Giant.

  502. father's horror film studio William Castle Productions.

  508. skeleton fly above the theater audience's heads in House

  512. Homicidal," Castle told Variety. "People don't forget this
  513. kind of unique movie-going experience."

  515. Terry Castle was formerly an executive at Nickelodeon,
  516. and she recently served as co-producer for the Robert
  517. Zemeckis remake of her father's 1958 film House on

  523. try and fix its troubled space-thriller Supernova.
  524. Variety reports that Coppola will oversee the
  525. re-cutting of the $60 million film from his American

  529. tried their luck with Supernova, though Hill departed the
  530. project shortly after principal photography began. The film

  578. Yet another movie that Bruce has not wrecked or
  579. overdid it with his "blood covered" body parts (i.e.
  580. Die Hard character) I thought he did well in Armagedon
  581. as well. He is a good actor but some of the macho
  582. stuff..well it does not add to his oscar winning
  583. hopes, if that counts at all.

  655. I thought it was fantastic!!  Renny harlin has rekindled what he did with
  656. Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger - not amazing movies but definitely super action
  657. films!  Compare this film to something like Virus or Deep Rising or crap
  658. like that and you can see the difference.  I enjoyed it for what it was - an
  659. action movie that didn't have time for romantic sub plots - that kept the
  660. pace high and the action sequences unbelievable (in a good way!).

  1178. PROJECT (3 stars - very mixed comments) held onto third place.

  1298. _Teaching_Mrs._Tingle_ (PG-13) ***
  1299.     Once upon a time, there was a 10th grade English class run by one Mr. Jerry 
  1300. Stover, a teacher who was a pain to (with a few exceptions) all of his students 
  1301. but made an extra effort to continually tear down one student in particular. 
  1302.  This usually strong English student found all of his best efforts met with indifference 
  1303. at best, outright derision at worst by Stover, who often seized every opportunity 
  1304. to humiliate the student in front of the whole class.  When called on to do an 
  1305. oral report on a reading assignment, the student only got about two words in 
  1306. before Stover criticized his barely-begun report and asked him to sit down.  
  1307. But that was nothing compared to what came at the end of the school year, when 
  1308. the student's year-ending speech project--which was capped off with a spirited 
  1309. song number that was wholeheartedly embraced and warmly praised by his classmates--was 
  1310. verbally torn to shreds by Stover in front of everyone.  That public attack was 
  1311. just a warm-up for a comment Stover made during a subsequent private meeting 
  1312. with the student: "I don't like you."
  1313.     As you can guess, the student in question was yours truly, and while it did 
  1314. take some added effort--and, I'd like to think, guilt on Stover's part--to get 
  1315. an A in that class, I didn't have to resort to anything resembling the over-the-top 
  1316. antics presented in hot scribe Kevin Williamson's directorial debut, _Teaching_Mrs._Tingle_. 
  1317.  My own experiences undoubtedly contributed to my enjoyment of this admittedly 
  1318. junky but wickedly watchable revenge fantasy.  I immediately identified with 
  1319. the film's protagonist, solid A student Leigh Ann Watson (Katie Holmes), who, 
  1320. in an early scene, presents a much-worked-on project in her history class, only 
  1321. to have her presentation abruptly cut short by vicious barbs hurled by the class's 
  1322. instructor, Mrs. Eve Tingle (Helen Mirren).  This scene (and the entire film, 
  1323. for that matter) has been criticized for being grossly exaggerated, and indeed 
  1324. it is, to biting comic effect.  But there is a ring of truth--not just for me 
  1325. personally, who knows it is possible for teachers to have unfounded personal 
  1326. grudges against students; but I'm sure for many other people who have had similar, 
  1327. if not overly so, trying experiences with hardass teachers.
  1328.     Williamson sends all basis in reality out the window, however, when the film's 
  1329. main story kicks into gear.  After Mrs. Tingle falsely accuses Leigh Ann of cheating, 
  1330. she and her friends Luke Churner (Barry Watson) and Jo Lynn Jordan (Marisa Coughlan) 
  1331. confront Mrs. Tingle at her home.  One thing leads to another, and soon Mrs. 
  1332. Tingle is tied to her bed, held prisoner by the three students, who try to reason 
  1333. with her--and teach her an overdue lesson or two.  The stage is set for a tense 
  1334. and witty psychological battle between the teens and Tingle, who is as adept 
  1335. at manipulative mind games as she is mean.
  1336.     For a first-time director, Williamson shows great skill working with actors. 
  1337.  While Watson is fairly bland as the hunky bad boy, he does share palpable chemistry 
  1338. with the other core three, who make good impressions.  Holmes is an instantly 
  1339. likable screen presence, and her calm and poise grounds the film in some level 
  1340. of reality and plays well off of newcomer Coughlan, who has the showier role 
  1341. as the kooky aspiring actress Jo Lynn.  The showiest role of them all, of course, 
  1342. is the title character, and Serious Actress Mirren sinks her teeth and then some 
  1343. into this change-of-pace part.  Her venomous performance has been criticized 
  1344. as being one-dimensional, but the point of the part is to be an over-the-top, 
  1345. love-to-hate villain, and does she ever succeed at that.
  1346.     That said, one does wish there were more of an explanation of Tingle's wicked 
  1347. ways, or at least a clearer one for her malice toward Leigh Ann; it is implied 
  1348. that she is jealous of her ability and bright prospects, but the implication 
  1349. is a bit too vaguely made and not altogether confirmed.  (After all, Mrs. Tingle 
  1350. does have one bright pet student.)  _Tingle_ was the first script Williamson 
  1351. ever wrote, and it is indeed the least polished of his heretofore produced works, 
  1352. and his inexperience in the director's chair doesn't serve the more awkward moments 
  1353. well.  There are a couple of scenes that establish Leigh Ann's warm relationship 
  1354. with her mother (Lesley Ann Warren) that are not only ridiculously saccharine, 
  1355. but feel completely out of place in what is otherwise a gleefully heartless film. 
  1356.  A bit more in line with the tone is Jo Lynn's hyper reenactment of scenes from 
  1357. _The_Exorcist_, and while it is good for a chuckle, the scene is a showstopper 
  1358. of the worst kind, a dead halt in the action; it is also a rather obligatory 
  1359. movie reference, a device worked well--and served a recognizable purpose--in 
  1360. Williamson's _Scream_ films but adds nothing in this context.
  1361.     To borrow an obvious metaphor that has been used--and will surely continue to 
  1362. be used--by detractors of the film, Williamson does, in fact, need to be taught 
  1363. a few more lessons on film direction.  But with _Teaching_Mrs._Tingle_, it is 
  1364. evident that Williamson does possess some natural filmmaking ability, and he 
  1365. has already found a distinct voice--something that many more established filmmakers 
  1366. have yet to discover.

  1368. IN BRIEF
  1369.  
  1370. _Life_Is_Beautiful_ (PG-13) *** 1/2
  1371.     ...or, the film formerly known as _La_Vita_╚_Bella_.  Back to add a few more 
  1372. dollars in Miramax's till is Roberto Benigni's Oscar-winning Italian-language 
  1373. Holocaust comedy, but in a radically different form--dubbed in English.  It sounds 
  1374. like blasphemy, but this shameless attempt to expand the film's audience beyond 
  1375. subtitle-readers works better than it has any reason to be.  One major reason 
  1376. for that is the vocal performance of Jonathan Nichols, who actually sounds like 
  1377. he could be Benigni after a battery of English lessons; more importantly, though, 
  1378. he has Benigni's comic rhythms down well enough that all the jokes lose little, 
  1379. if anything, in translation.  Not surprisingly, the rest of the voice cast isn't 
  1380. so effective; pity poor Giorgio Cantarini, whose effortlessly charming turn as 
  1381. Benigni's son is made into a typical American cloying child performance by one 
  1382. of those stridently cutesy kiddie voices.  The main reason why this version works, 
  1383. though, is what made the original version a ****  film: Benigni's funny, emotional, 
  1384. and sensitively handled story of an Italian Jew's noble effort to hide the reality 
  1385. of concentration camp life from his unsuspecting son.  Regardless of the spoken 
  1386. language, the original's sweetness and poignance comes through.  (opens August 
  1387. 27)
  1388.  
  1389. _Lucie_Aubrac_ (R) ***
  1390.     The shortcoming of Claude Berri's fact-based, WWII-set French drama is underlined 
  1391. by the title.  Although the film is named for Lucie Aubrac (Carole Bouquet), 
  1392. the brave, headstrong woman who tries to free her imprisoned resistance fighter 
  1393. husband Raymond (Daniel Auteuil) by outwitting the Nazis, the film is less about 
  1394. her character than it is her husband's ordeal and her scheme.  While this does 
  1395. make for engrossing drama, and the acting is uniformly solid, one cannot help 
  1396. but feel the film would have been more gripping if more was learned about the 
  1397. titular heroine beyond her cunning and resourcefulness.
  1398.  
  1399. _Mickey_Blue_Eyes_ (PG-13) ** 1/2
  1400.     The second time is not the charm for either Hugh Grant or Warner Bros., the 
  1401. former trying another romantic comedy for the summer, the latter trying another 
  1402. mob-themed comedy of the year.  Grant's British refinement and corresponding 
  1403. self-effacing manner is put to good use as Michael Felgate, a New York auction 
  1404. house manager who hastily proposes marriage to his schoolteacher girlfriend Gina 
  1405. Vitale (Jeanne Tripplehorn) without knowing that her father Frank (James Caan) 
  1406. is a mob boss.
  1407.     Some good laughs are to be had as Michael finds himself increasingly drawn into 
  1408. Frank's shady family business; it's a hoot to watch the prissy Michael try to 
  1409. act the tough guy.  The problem is that the film is at its core not a fish-out-of-water 
  1410. comedy, but a romantic one, and the love story is ill-served by all directly 
  1411. involved: director Kelly Makin, scripters Adam Scheinman and Robert Kuhn, and 
  1412. Grant and Tripplehorn, who look nice together but don't exactly generate the 
  1413. necessary warmth and sparks.

  1499. has been in free fall since _Tyson_) and, in his screen debut, WCW Wrestling 
  1500. sensation Bill Goldberg.  With such talent involved, isn't it shocking that Sony 
  1501. didn't screen the film in advance for critics?

  1504.     Not a porn film starring Jennifer Love Hewitt (sorry, couldn't resist), but 
  1505. a drama from New Zealand exploring modern romance through three intersecting

  1519.     Instead of watching _Mickey_Blue_Eyes_, watch WB's earlier, far superior mob-themed 
  1520. comedy, in which mobster Robert DeNiro turns to psychiatrist Billy Crystal for 
  1521. treatment for panic attacks.  Surprisingly (or perhaps not), the real comic firecracker 
  1522. of the pair is DeNiro, who gamely sends up his screen image; the film suffers 
  1523. in the end when his character disappears for a while and Crystal's takes over. 
  1524.  Nonetheless, a worthy rental.  Also starring for director Harold Ramis is Lisa

  1534. Best Foreign Language Film, but it certainly ranks among the best films, regardless 
  1535. of language, released last year.  Telling of a wealthy patriarch's (Hennig Moritzen) 
  1536. sixtieth birthday bash thrown wildly awry by his eldest son's (Ulrich Thomsen) 
  1537. shocking--and deadly serious--allegations.  The film is terrifically acted and 
  1538. feels remarkably realistic (undoubtedly due to the "Dogme 95" restrictions that 
  1539. the film was made under), but what makes the film so impressive is how carefully 
  1540. Vinterberg walks the fine line between comedy and misery.  (USA Home Entertainment)

  1547.     One of the year's most surprising box office disasters was Ron Howard's likable 
  1548. comedy about a video store clerk (Matthew McConaughey, in what should've been 
  1549. a career-rejuvenating performance) who willingly becomes the star of his own 
  1550. 24-hour cable show.  Howard eschews the deeper, darker underpinnings of the premise, 
  1551. which were exploited to great effect in _The_Truman_Show_, and the film is comparatively 
  1552. weaker as a result.  But that does not discount the light entertainment value 
  1553. of this enterprise, which is an easy watch in its own lighthearted right.
  1554.     The collector's edition DVD boasts an impressive number of extras, ranging from 
  1555. two music videos and a (unfunny) outtake reel to two separate audio commentaries 
  1556. (one by Howard, the other by writers Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) and 40 minutes 
  1557. (!) worth of deleted scenes.  A more in-depth review of the disc will appear

  1569.  Stephen Baldwin, Claudia Schiffer, Robert Downey Jr., Alison Eastwood, George 
  1570. Newbern, and all else involved should fire their agents for getting them involved

  1583. have copped an Oscar nod for her spunky turn.  However, nothing can save the 
  1584. typically balsa wood performance turned in by a blue-haired Ryan Phillippe.

  1636. are Allen, Julia Roberts (ouch!), Edward Norton, Tim Roth, Alan Alda, Goldie 
  1637. Hawn (who is head and shoulders above the rest), _not_ Drew Barrymore (hers is 
  1638. the only voice that is dubbed), and two young divas of summer '99: Natasha Lyonne 
  1639. (_American_Pie_) and Natalie Portman...

  1656. Ang Lee's delightful 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen's _Sense_and_Sensibility_ 
  1657. (PG, *** 1/2, Columbia TriStar), which copped a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar 
  1658. for Emma Thompson, who stars as the more reserved of the two Dashwood sisters, 
  1659. who seek romantic fulfillment.  Kate Winslet earned her first Oscar nomination 
  1660. (but, alas, didn't win) for her fiery portrayal of the more passionate of the 
  1661. pair.  The DVD includes feature-length commentary by Lee, Thompson, producer 
  1662. Lindsay Doran, and co-producer James Schamus; two deleted scenes; and Thompson's 
  1663. lively acceptance speech at the 1996 Golden Globes, where she won the Best Screenplay 
  1664. trophy.
