Yeah, buy Cruise was deep into character very often. Didn't he say he was
getting stress headaches or something, from just trying to contain the
character's emotions? I think that the repetition was written for the
character, and since Cruise was in character for 2 years, it must have stuck
with him a bit.
~Matt
<< i also noticed that cruise's character repeated many things,
but then i noticed that cruise himself was doing this in a lengthy
interview on entertainment tonight. so either this is a characteristic of
cruise that he took to the character in the film, it is a characteristic of
the character in the film that stuck with cruise, or cruise was kind of
"mocking" the character in the interview (unlikely, considering how much
he's said he enjoyed working on the film, with Kubrick, etc)>>

Well, it all depends. Take Titanic. I personally didn't love the movie, it
was good, not great, a far, far cry from excellent. But the nudity was done
"tastefully." Nothing explicit, or vulgar. Then take a movie like, say, Wild
Things. A bad movie to start with, and the nudity did nothing to help it. It
was pointless and tasteless, and only helped typecast Denise Richards as some
low-standard actress. And then there are movies that have nudity everywhere
which serves no purpose, but those are the movies you see on premium channels
at 3 am. So in my opinion, yes, an actress can still go nude and retain some
respect and dignity, as long as it's not just a pull to bring in the (male)
audience, in which case I do lose respect for them.
~Matt
<<But speaking of nudity. What are people's feelings concerning that? My
boyfriend says he has no respect for people who get nude in films. i'm not
sure where i stand. any thoughts?>>

Actually, that last song was called "Oh La La" by The Faces.
~Matt
<<The best part of the film, musically, I thought, was the ending, when they
played wish that I knew waht I know now, by rod stewart. That gave me
goosebumps, and for something even remotely romantic to move me in any way is
quite an accomplishment. ANyway, I just really liked this movie>>

I want to see a bunch of naked men! Not that I'm a freak or anything, I
just think it's too one-sided when the male director would rather see a
naked woman instead of feeling inadequate when Harvey Kietel strips down...
And James, you ARE a freak...

Me? A freak? Thank you for noticing!! You are correct. It is very one
sided, except in the case of Orgazmo. Here's a movie about the porno
industry (and Mormons??) and you see more naked male butts than anything
else. What a let down.

Howdy,
You know, I can appreciate a nice tush as much as the next.
Being hetreo and all, I'm particually partial to female
tushy with all due respect to Matt Stone and Trey Parker.
However, I have to agree, EWS was way one-sided with the
nudity. I almost felt guity as I watched with a female
friend all of those beautiful nude women (well, Nicole
could use a sandwich come to think of it) and all she got
to see was...hey, where there any naked guys?
Any who, I figure if you're going to check out a flick for
T&A and god-knows what else, rent a porno. To be honest,
I'd careless if there was no nudity in this flick if the
pace were a little quicker and it there were a tab bit
more clarity in the meaning of it all. Then again, I didn't
care for 2001 (I'm more of the Dr Strangelove/Barry/Orange
ilk).
Later People and Freaks alike,

The nudity in Kubrick's movies aren't done for erotic purposes. Watch
clockwork orange. If you thought the nudity in Clockwork orange was eroitc,
something's wrong ;-). But really, most of his nudity is done not for erotic
effect, but for some other purpose. I thought a lot of the talking that was
done during the film was MUCH more erotic than the nudity scenes themselves

Rushmore! I saw it, but I didn't get it. Bill and Jason and Olivia (?)...
absolutely uninspiring. I asked for my money back on "Dark City" (didn't get
it only because I sat through the whole thing), but I was too embarrassed to
knock a Bill Murray movie. It wasn't funny. Bill looked like he was
bloating himself along. Spend your money on Life is Beautiful or Xiu Xiu.

Oh For Crying Out Loud!
Rod Steward sang for the Faces in the late 60s, but it was
not "HIS" band no more than The Jeff Beck Group was HIS
band. He was just the bloody singer. He and his ego got too
big and he did his own thing more notably in the 70s under
his own name. Okay, enough already!
And btw, Rushmore was the best movie I've seen all summer
if not all year. I dug it better than EWS,Sumer of Sam, and
most definitely Star Bores. I'm baffled as to those who
didn't "get" this quirky gem, but hey, we don't all have
the same tastes, right?
Okay, I've yapped enough.
Ron
PS Oh yeah, clearly eroticism played a big part of EWS and
it WAS intentional. And though I didn't check out the flick
to get off, I still say it was one-sided with the nudity
(all female, scarcely any male). So there!

Subject: [MV] Movie News - 07/21/99
(Launch) - Pierce Brosnan, who will soon be seen on the big screen in
"The Thomas Crown Affair," tells US magazine that he knew no one
other than Rene Russo who could pull off the role of his co-star in
the remake. Brosnan, who also produced the highly anticipated film,
tells the magazine that he pooh-poohed studio executives who were
hoping to land Michelle Pfieffer or Julia Roberts for the film's lead
female role. "When I got the call from Pierce, he made it seem like I
was the only female on earth for the part," said Russo. "This movie
was clearly Pierce's baby, his dream." Brosnan admits that there is a
lot riding on the new film. "You're going to have people take a swipe
at you, particularly when you're dealing with a role that is so
closely associated with Steve McQueen, one of the cinematic icons of
American movie lore. "The Thomas Crown Affair" hits theaters Aug. 6.

(Launch) - The low-budget horror movie "The Blair Witch Project"
scored a major coup over the weekend - despite the bellowing of
Hollywood's summer big guns, "Blair Witch" scared up $1.5 million
from moviegoers in only 27 theaters. Such a performance means that
the movie raked in around $58,000 per screen, meaning that each
screen's take was well more than double the movie's entire budget. By
comparison, the per-screen take for the weekend's top flick, "Eyes
Wide Shut," was only $9,457. Helping "Blair Witch" was a genius
marketing campaign which deliberately blurred the lines between
fantasy and real-life. The movie hints that it's made up of real
footage from a documentary film crew that disappears in the woods of
Maryland while trying to record evidence of a local legend called the
Blair Witch.
"We just wanted to make sure that it was convincing 100% of the time,
the entire experience you were watching - this first person
perspective, this home video into hell of these three film students,"
co-writer/co-director Daniel Myrick said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Want a piece of Austin Powers? Looking for
something in a gaudy '70s jumpsuit from "Boogie Nights"? Interested
in "Melrose Place" swimming pool water with a guarantee that Heather
Locklear swam here? Movie studios, with warehouses full of the stuff
that dreams are made of, have begun testing the collectibles market
with online auctions to peddle props from films and TV shows, along
with other entertainment memorabilia. Many studios and production
companies have online stores that sell mass-produced items related to
popular movies or shows. But Universal and New Line are the first to
take up the Web gavel and offer one-of-a-kind wardrobe items, pieces
of movie sets and other props to high bidders in sales similar to
those run by eBay, Amazon.com and other online auctioneers.

LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) - Folks in Longview can't wait for Robert De
Niro and Cuba Gooding Jr. to show up and begin filming their next
movie. Forget the glamour - they just want the cash. "This will be
phenomenal income to the whole community," said Frankie Sherer,
director of sales for the DoubleTree Inn in neighboring Kelso, which
has rented 75 rooms to 20th Century Fox production crews. Officials
hope De Niro and Gooding's film, "Navy Diver," pumps as much into the
local economy as the recent film "Snow Falling on Cedars," which
generated $1.5 million and employed 200 people.
As many as 900 locals could be hired to depict scenes in New York's
Harlem neighborhood and a U.S. Navy base. A June casting call drew
1,600 applicants, most of them from Portland, Ore., said Emily
Dunlap, extras casting director for Portland-based Background Action.
Set construction for "Navy Diver" is to start next week. The biggest
project is a full-scale naval station - 14 buildings and two piers -
to be built near Rainier, about 50 miles north of Portland, Ore. The
structures will be destroyed when filming is complete.

(Launch) - John Singleton's upcoming retelling of the 1970s
blaxploitation flick "Shaft" is still in pre-production, but it has
many fans curious. "Pulp Fiction" star Samuel L. Jackson is poised to
step into Richard Roundtree's maroon platform shoes as the titular
New York City cop. "It should reflect the times we're in now. It's
not a remake," Jackson said. "So the social milieu that John Shaft's
in should be greater than Harlem now. It should encompass all of
Manhattan in a very specific kind of way. Hopefully, he'll be a
millennial black private dick who's the sex machine to all the
chicks." Jackson will be seen next in the thriller "Deep Blue Sea,"
which opens July 30.
-=> * <=-
(UltimateTV.com) - Daytime TV talk show host Montel Williams is
directing his first film, titled "Little Pieces," reports Daily
Variety. The drama, which follows the lives of three women, was
written by Williams' wife, Grace Morely and Amy Acton. "Homicide:
Life on the Street" star Jon Seda has been cast along side Daniel
Quinn ("Extreme Justice") and Acton. "Little Pieces" went into
production last week.

Bob Roberts w/ some spoilers for you lucky people who have never seen it.
I know this may be an unpopular position to take on this movie, but I have
never before experienced a more painfully slow movie in my life. First off,
Tim Robbins should never be allowed to sing. What director in his right
mind would allow him to sing, not just once or twice but throughout the
whole movie? No director, that's why Tim Robbins had to direct it himself.
I'm sorry, I know it was suppose to be a political satire and all, but I
just didn't get this movie. It was ponderous, it never allowed you to get
to know Bob Roberts or any of the characters for that matter, and the
ending left me and my wife arguing over whether he had really been shot or
not. Yes his foot was tapping at the end, but they said he could begin to
recover feeling in his toes, then feet, then legs and could one day walk
again. Hell, it was just like politics, was that the point, and if it was
why bother? The whole thing seemed to be an ego trip on Tim Robbins part
and I hate to see that because I really like him as an actor. It was a poor
choice on my part, and can anybody agree that it belongs in the comedy
section of the video store? I think Drama would have been more appropriate.

I personally didn't like it that much. Some of it was interesting,
especially as the surroundings were very authentic, and the acting is pretty
good. Jackson is not the biggest character, although he has some of the most
interesting scenes. Even so, his character is not all that unlike his
character in Jackie Brown, and that's not really a good thing. Phillip Baker
Hall is the main character, and he is very good and captivating in a lot of
his lecture type discussions. John C Reilly and Gwenyth Paltrow are also in
it. This to me is a movie that has good atmosphere and good acting,
especially some good writing for the characters, but the movie is not much
about anything. The story is pretty weak, and when conflict does arise, it
is not that interesting. It's kind of a movie that is centered viewing
characters in an atmosphere, as opposed to having them do anything really
significant. Oh, there are some little plot twists and stuff, but not
overall important.
