  39. Dude, I saw the first sly screening of A Bug's Life and let me asure
  40. you, and any others who think Antz is the be all and end all... you
  41. ain't seen nothing yet. By itself Antz is a great movie, but A Bug's
  42. Life surpasses it in so many ways.

  44. The animation is, well, breathtaking, the story and script are full
  45. of laughs and big moments, the audience was captivated throughout.
  46. It borrows scenes from various other films, from The Seven Samurai
  47. to Jurassic Park, but it's only looking back that you notice.
  48. The voice-overs are by lesser-named celebs (with the odd Kevin
  49. Spacey exception) and I found that as a result it was easier to get
  50. into as a story without thinking "Oh, that's Stallone, that's Woody"
  51. all the way through.
  52.  
  53. I'd also disagree with those who think Bugs is the kids movie while
  54. Antz is the adults flick. A Bugs Life is so well executed, so
  55. smooth, so funny, that I see no difference in it's target audience.
  56.  
  57. I did enjoy Antz but after seeing this smooth piece of work it
  58. really left Antz looking a bit rushed. Basically if you liked Toy
  59. Story, this will stop you in your tracks. And if you loved Antz,
  60. well you're just going to have a great time, ain't ya?
  61.  
  62. If Antz is a 90%, I'd give Bug's 99%.

  1280.      The makers of THE SIEGE probably are throwing up their hands,
  1281. baffled by the protests voiced by Arab-American groups.  The basic set-up,
  1282. understandably, could hit a nerve:  Arab terrorists, incensed over U.S.
  1283. involvement in the disappearance of an Islamic religious/political leader,
  1284. begin a massive bombing campaign in New York City.  Initially, a joint
  1285. task force led by F.B.I. special agent Anthony Hubbard (Denzel Washington)
  1286. is on the case, but tensions and animosities rise as they are unable to
  1287. end the bombings.  Eventually, the President imposes martial law in New
  1288. York, charging U.S. Army General William Devereaux (Bruce Willis) with
  1289. driving the perpetrators from hiding in Brooklyn's Arab-American community
  1290. into the open -- even if it means imprisoning every young male of Arabic
  1291. descent to find them.
  1292.  
  1293.      You can feel co-writer/director Edward Zwick straining for every
  1294. possible opportunity to make it clear that THE SIEGE is _not_ about
  1295. Arab-bashing.  Hubbard's partner Frank Haddad (Tony Shalhoub) is a
  1296. Lebanese-born naturalized citizen; representatives from Arab-American
  1297. anti-defamation groups stand up in meetings to voice their patriotism and
  1298. to denounce terrorism; ominous music accompanies every shot of
  1299. Arab-Americans trapped behind barbed wire fences; even the motivations of
  1300. the terrorists are traced more to duplicitous U.S. foreign policy
  1301. decisions than to fanatacism.  As THE SIEGE builds to a series of speeches
  1302. condemning the idea that extremism in the defense of security is no vice,
  1303. you know that Zwick wants audiences to feel him championing the notion
  1304. that Islam does not equal violent zealotry -- that Arab-Americans are
  1305. people too.
  1306.  
  1307.      There's one very important thing missing from THE SIEGE, however:  a
  1308. genuine connection to the people who are suffering.  The film doesn't
  1309. spend a second of personal time with a character actually interned in a
  1310. detention camp, nor with individuals tortured by the military for
  1311. information, nor with anyone victimized by anti-Arab hate crimes.  They
  1312. appear in forlorn masses, in news footage, or hidden behind doors.  Yes,
  1313. Shalhoub does get dialogue expressing outrage when his teenage son is
  1314. taken prisoner, but the sentiment feels second-hand and token.  During its
  1315. final hour, THE SIEGE becomes a thoroughly generic thriller of chases and
  1316. speeches -- more interested in being provocative than being empathetic,
  1317. and more interested in the _idea_ of trampled rights than those whose
  1318. rights are being trampled.
  1319.  
  1320.      In fact, it's a shame THE SIEGE had to go there at all, because its
  1321. first hour works so well as a crackling police procedure drama.
  1322. Washington shares some exceptional scenes with Annette Bening as a
  1323. secretive C.I.A. operative whose agenda may be very personal; their
  1324. clashing tactics -- the rule of law vs. the rule of expediency -- make for
  1325. first rate and surprisingly platitude-free sparring.  Zwick directs the
  1326. early action sequences with energy and economy, anchored by the
  1327. always-satisfying images of determined people going about a difficult job
  1328. with hard-nosed efficiency.
  1329.  
  1330.      That exceptional first hour deteriorates into bloated nonsense as
  1331. soon as Willis's General Devereaux starts marching his troops across the
  1332. Brooklyn Bridge.  Willis himself is a huge part of the problem, taking a
  1333. potentially complex character and quickly turning him into a sneering
  1334. caricature of military sadism.  Even the fundamental honor and decency
  1335. Washington brings to every role starts to seem like sanctimony, because
  1336. the script isn't serious about getting into the gray areas of individual
  1337. rights vs. societal needs.  The concept deserves more than heroes and
  1338. villains pointing guns at each other.  Arab-Americans may be troubled by
  1339. the idea that some Arab characters are portrayed as terrorists in THE
  1340. SIEGE.  They should be more troubled by the idea that, in a film with such
  1341. an incendiary premise, Arab characters in general are more symbolic than
  1342. substantial.

  1378.      So much for Adam Sandler, "normal" guy.  In THE WEDDING SINGER, it
  1379. looked as though Sandler were trying to shrug off the infantile,
  1380. silly-voiced persona he took from "Saturday Night Live" to BILLY MADISON
  1381. and HAPPY GILMORE.  While still fairly silly in its own way, THE WEDDING
  1382. SINGER was a somewhat more mature, somewhat more clever vehicle for
  1383. Sandler, and his first attempt at actual screen acting.  In THE WATERBOY,
  1384. Sandler is once again in infantile, silly-voiced rare form, the kind of
  1385. character that strikes unholy terror in a critic's heart.
  1386.  
  1387.      It would be a gross exaggeration to call THE WATERBOY a smart film,
  1388. but it's funny in ways I didn't quite expect.  Sandler plays a 31-year-old
  1389. simpleton bayou boy named Bobby Boucher who still lives with his
  1390. domineering Mama (Kathy Bates) and has been the University of Louisiana's
  1391. water boy for 18 years.  When U. of L.'s nasty Coach Beaulieu (Jerry Reed)
  1392. finally fires Bobby, the hydrophilic lad hooks up with the hapless South
  1393. Central Louisiana State University Mud Dogs, led by jittery Coach Klein.
  1394. Coach Klein inadvertently unleashes Bobby's inner linebacker when he
  1395. encourages Bobby to defend himself against the taunting of team members,
  1396. discovering in the process one of the greatest pass rushers in college
  1397. football history.  Thus are the Mud Dogs on their way to their greatest
  1398. season -- and, naturally, a showdown with the University of Louisiana --
  1399. provided they can keep over-protective Mama from finding out her baby boy
  1400. is playing "the foosball."
  1401.  
  1402.      The opening minutes of THE WATERBOY don't hold out much hope for
  1403. anything beyond 12-year-old comic sensibilities.  Sight gags predominate,
  1404. from a football hitting Bobby in the head, to pratfalls over a water
  1405. cooler, to Sandler motoring about on a riding lawn mower.  Yawn-inspiring
  1406. running jokes involve a perpetually drunken cheerleading squad, a pair of
  1407. dim-witted die-hard fans (Clint Howard and Allen Covert), and an assistant
  1408. coach (Blake Clark) who speaks in an incomprehensible accent.  A few
  1409. giggles leak out of the predictabe sophomorism, while Sandler's
  1410. stuttering, soft-spoken variation on Cajun Man threatens to wear out his
  1411. welcome very early on.
  1412.  
  1413.      Then something strange happens some time after the fourth or fifth
  1414. reference to Bobby's backwater, snake-and-squirrel-eating background.  The
  1415. dialogue starts getting sharper, including Bobby's bizarre cover story to
  1416. Mama for his football-related bruises.  Sandler starts getting more
  1417. endearingly innocent rather than acting like an oblivious moron.  And the
  1418. sight gags start getting funnier, perhaps as much related to a build-up of
  1419. good will as to any change in approach.  The incongruous presence of Bates
  1420. and Winker (the latter sporting decidedly un-Fonzie-esque love handles)
  1421. certainly helps, but there's something about the writing in THE WATERBOY
  1422. that kept sneaking up on me, delivering a left-field laugh at times when I
  1423. was expecting an obvious bit of slapstick idiocy.
  1424.  
  1425.      Many people probably associate Sandler with moron comedy in the
  1426. Ernest/Pauly Shore/Carrot Top vein, perhaps without having seen any of his
  1427. films.  He and frequent writing partner Tim Herlihy are considerably more
  1428. sly than that.  They've learned a few lessons in grown-up comedy from THE
  1429. WEDDING SINGER, and bring that sensibility to the lower common denominator
  1430. audience targeted with THE WATERBOY.  They certainly miss the target
  1431. plenty of times -- Rob Schneider's extended cameo gets more insufferable
  1432. every time he appears -- but they also don't fire at the same stupid
  1433. target over and over again.  Between the lethargic opening and the
  1434. who-cares romance between Sandler and bad girl Fairuza Balk, THE WATERBOY
  1435. offers goofy entertainment.  It appears Sandler doesn't have to be
  1436. "normal" to be funny.
  1437.
