Wow, this one msut be one of the best I have seen this year (ok Big Lebowsky was extremely good).

the film reminded me alot of Bladerunner - although the set comes nowhere near it (I'd say Art Deco
describes it best) - but it is also a Dystopia and provides more food for thought than for the eyes - it
is a slow and solemn film - a relief after all those fast cut / little plot films we're bugged with lately.
This one could become a classic  SF-flick dealing with genetic engeneering and the perils and
impacts of it. I'd say it's a pretty current topic and dealt with in an overall decent and convincing
manner. Actors Ethan Hawke (- hey hey he can act), Uma Thurman and Alan Arkin do a pretty
convincing job. Can't say anything about the director, Michael Nyman composed the music (The Piano
and the Greenaway films).

Certainly no film for the masses, but if you are into SF yet sick and tired of giant lizards, comets,
asteroids or fairy worlds - this one is certainly a must-see.

Subject: [MV] Something About Mary - five stars

Last night we went to see "Something About Mary" and it was without a doubt
one of the best movies we have ever seen.

The laughter in the theater was so loud you had trouble hearing some of the
lines. It broke all of the rules. It was hilarious. I wont take the time to
write the plot line but afterwards coming out of the theater I have never
seen so many smiling faces and at the end of the movie the applause from
the audience was deafening.

Don't go if you are easily offended or if you are a prude but if you want
to see a movie that my wife and I would rate five stars out of four then go
see it.

Afterwards in the lobby and in the rest room I heard at least three people
say "Best Movie I ever saw!". I don't know if it was the best I ever saw
but it was sure in the top five I've ever seen and I've seen a lot since I
grew up during WWII.

I haven't seen the latest installment of leathal weapon, and with good reason.
I absolutely loved the first one, the second one was severely lacking in the
dazzle that made the first one real to me, and in the third one, the only thing
that made this one redemable was rene russo.  I've heard that they've made her
pregnant in the latest one, and chris Rock doesn't seem like a suitable
replacement.
But, let me explain why the first one was the best to me.  There was no
supercharged explosions(terminator style), and there were no flat characters.
Gibson played the part with amazing depth that a zillion method actors couldn't
accomplish.  The two men were three dimensional, with real problems and real
trust to overcome the 'bad guys'.  Although, Riggs apparent hatred of God is not
lost on me(I disliked the undertones), I saw it was necessary to show how deep
into despair he was.
The second movie was a joke of attack guns, toilet humor(very punny), and a one
dimensional girl whose only purpose in the movie seemed to be to get mel to show
his butt, and then to die.
The third one was just a take-off of die hard, and for pete's sake, just sell
the damn house and retire.
As hard as they try, they can't recreate the bonding and self sacrifice created
in the first movie.\


Well, that's my take.  What do you think?

Hollywood's hottest hunks -- Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio

Bradness is considering "Smuggler's Moon," the life story of
Kris and Bill Shaffer, two brothers who spent 20 years
operating a documentary film company ostensibly specializing
in diving for deep sea treasures but secretly smuggling
marijuana. If Brad likes the script he'll play one of the
brothers. Meanwhile Leo's next one, "The Beach," is one step
closer to fruition now that Twentieth Century Fox has won an
intense battle to secure its worldwide distribution rights.
Leo will receive $20 million for his role as a rootless
American backpacker who is following a map to paradise drawn
by a dying stranger. Shooting is slated to begin in January,
first in Thailand and then in Australia.

the woman she was to portray in "50 Violins," Madonna has
abruptly exited the project. The Miramax film is based on
the life of Roberta Tzavaris, the East Harlem violin teacher

fiddlers. Variety is repeating a rumor that Madonna was
dropped from the project, in part because of "an
accumulation of excessive demands." But Craven -- known for
his blood-soaked horror movies -- said he has "nothing but
goodwill and admiration for Madonna."

Recent bridegroom Macaulay Culkin, best known for playing
wholesome young boys, seems to be changing his image. Culkin
is set to play a drug addicted hitman in "Body Piercer." And

nightclub regular who murders a former friend and winds up
in prison because he couldn't help boasting about it.

roster. Vincent Gallo's tale of an ex-con's return to his childhood
home in Buffalo, N.Y., scored $55,837 on four football fields in
Gotham and L.A. Joining the roster at No. 3 was "Polish Wedding,"
which said "I do" to $50,813 at six altars.

Both Clockwatchers and I Went Down were excellent. Clockwatchers- with
Parker Posey, Lisa Kudrow, and the actress who played Harriet in Emma- was
fairly funny and has an interesting view of life. Kudrow's role is similar
to her past roles in Friends, Romey and Michelle, etc, and she is okay in
the movie. Posey, Harriet (I wish I could remember her name), and a fourth
actress who rounds out their group in the movie, were all very good. The
movie is about four twenty-something year old females who are working as
temps in a large corporation. Life is good- Posey is manic- but everything
starts to unravel after someone in the company begins to steal. The name
of the movie tells you about the lives of the temps- their clockwatching.
They don't have a real jobs and spend their lives waiting for five o'clock
to role around.

I Went Down is good in a very different way than Clockwatchers. It's more
in the genre of Pulp Fiction, although the comparison is not exactly fair.
I Went Down, an Irish movie, is about a young man recently paroled from
prison who gets roped into working for a mafia-type organization to
protect a friend. IT's worth seeing.

Subject: [MV] Saving Private Ryan

Well folks, it looks like there is finally a major Hollywood release
that is going to fulfill its promise.  Saving Private Ryan has been
getting phenomenal reviews.  A friend snuck into the premiere and
said that the first 20 minutes are the most incredible and intense
he's ever seen.  Not in an exciting way but evidently Spielberg draws
you as deeply into the horror of war as has ever been done.  I've
heard that these 20 minutes will be very difficult and maybe
impossible to watch by some people.

Has anybody seen Zorro?  I heard that it is actually good and was
considering going to it.

As everybody probably knows by now "Lolita" is finally getting a
theatrical release.  I know this will make Thomas very happy.  The
bottom line is that with the pick-up by Showtime they were able to
find somebody who saw it as being financially sound to make the
effort.  I think Goldwyn will distribute it.  Expect lots of
chestbeating from religious organizations as well as child activists.
 If there are protests it will be interesting to see who will cross
the line.  The last time I did that was with Last Temptation of
Christ.  They even had guards in the theatre.

Thomas, do you plan to catch it in a theatre?

Wilson, Matthew Letscher.  Written by Terry Rossio, Ted Elliott, John
Eskow, David S. Ward.  Directed by Martin Campbell.  Rated PG-13 for
some intense action and violence.

     After languishing in prison for twenty years, Don Diego de la Vega
(Anthony Hopkins) escapes captivity only to find that his old nemesis, Don
Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson), has returned from Spain with new plans for
the California territory.  Finding that he is too old to fight the good fight
effectively, de la Vega recruits Alejandro Murrieta (Antonio Banderas) to
take his place as the Mexican hero Zorro.  After weeks of training, Murrieta
is nearly up to snuff and is given the chance to enter Montero's inner circle
of conspirators.  What he learns there angers him greatly and soon his sword
is unsheathed in an attempt to protect the good people of California.
Meanwhile, he finds that he has fallen in love with Motero's beautiful
daughter, who was stolen as an infant from his mentor.

     "The Mask of Zorro" swashes every buckle on its way to cinematic
greatness.  It works as both an action film and a romantic drama, with a
welcome dose of humor thrown in for good measure.  Both Hopkins and
Banderas make outstanding Zorros, while the supporting characters couldn't
be more perfectly cast.  This lush and lovely adaptation of the oft-filmed tale
is hands down the best ever.  Finally a summer film worth standing in line
for.

Yeah it does, it does, it does! Recently Nabokov's Lolita was elected one of the five best novels of
this century - (Joyce's Ulysees came first). Apart from that I might be moving to the US, so you better
get more tolerant when I get there (no need to go into that again).

Hey, I am living in a free and liberal country and have seen it half a year ago in a regular theatre.
There were no guards in the cinema, though. People here are so funny as to respect art and its
expression.
Say, do you have the KKK demonstrate against Spike Lee films? I'd really love to go to the US and get
some action apart from the film. Do I need to be armed?

Pint-sized Jonathan Lipnicki, 7, who first stole hearts in
"Jerry Maguire," is enjoying a career some actors five times
his age might envy. Besides providing the voice of the baby
tiger in "Dr. Dolittle," Lipnicki has signed to play George
Little in the upcoming screen version of author E.B. White's
classic "Stuart Little." The Hollywood Reporter says the
picture will be directed by Rob Minkoff ("The Lion King")
and will co-star Geena Davis (as George's mom) and a
computer-generated mouse (Stuart). From there, Lipnicki goes
on to star in the feature "The Little Vampire," based on
books by Angela Sommer-Bodenburg.

Robert Carlyle, last seen shedding his clothes in the
surprise British hit "The Full Monty," is expected to step
into the movie version of Frank McCourt's bestseller,
"Angela's Ashes." Variety says Carlyle is in talks to join
Emily Watson in the film, to be directed by Alan Parker,
about an impoverished and tragedy-plagued family in early
20th Century Ireland. Carlyle would play Malachy McCourt,
the alcoholic, chronically unemployed father in the story,
with Watson as his long-suffering wife. Liam Neeson had
earlier been mentioned for the father's role.

I agree 100 percent. There hasn't been a movie that's so viscerally exciting and
satisfying since "Raiders of the Lost Ark" -- and there's a dash of "The Princess
Bride" in it, too. "Zorro" is certainly the most fun movie this summer -- and I've
seen almost all of 'em.

The Peacemaker.  Also the name of a guy used in the Old West.  Might have
been the title of a Western, as well.  (Anyone??)

Actually, not a bad movie.

Know what I like best??  They actually used a "cast of thousands" in the
movie.  This was not just about some renegade army outcast saving the
world: the story had Clooney's character (though still gruff but
loveable:-) actually calling for backup, and accepting help in his job of
saving the world.

Lolita (R) ** 1/2
    After seeing Adrian Lyne's much-talked-about screen version of Vladimir
Nabokov's _Lolita_, I can easily see why it's taken the better part of two
years for the film to find an American distributor--but it's not for the
reasons you might think.  Lyne's take on the classic tale of pedophilic
lust is just about the opposite of what one would expect from the director
of bankable, tawdry zeitgeist-tappers _Fatal_Attraction_ and
_Indecent_Proposal_.  It is nicely composed, careful, tasteful... to the
point of frigidity.  For all the taboos it covers, _Lolita_ is strangely
staid and uninvolving piece of work, a film whose only commercial prospects
with in the manufactured controversy surrounding it.
    Unlike Stanley Kubrick's blackly comic 1962 version of Nabokov's novel,
Lyne and screenwriter Stephen Schiff take a stately approach to the
controversial story.  This works for the general setup, especially the
elegant prologue, in which the sexual proclivities of professor Humbert
Humbert (Jeremy Irons) are explained: when he was 14, he was deeply in love
with a same-aged girl who eventually fell ill and died; ever since, he has
lusted over nyphets.  Flash forward to 1947, and Humbert finds his ultimate
object of desire in Dolores Haze, a.k.a. Lolita (Dominique Swain), the
feisty 14-year-old daughter of Charlotte (Melanie Griffith, her shrillness
working for once), the widow in whose home he rents a room.  To remain
close to Lolita, Humbert impulsively marries Charlotte, which sets off a
chain of events that leads to Humbert taking stepdaughter Lolita, now his
very willing lover, on wild road trip across America.
    Once _Lolita_ hits the road, Lyne's glacial style keeps the audience at a
distance and saps just about all the energy from the film.  The film soon
settles into a cyclic stop-and-go rhythm where Lolita's naturally childish
behavior incenses Humbert, he pines for her, she uses it to her advantage
and gets him back, only to anger him again.  Lyne is understandably
discreet with the sexual encounters between Humbert and Lolita, and his
adherence to taste is admirable.   However, the most effective moments in
_Lolita_ are those where Lyne doesn't play it safe and dares to unsettle
the audience, which is what he's built his entire career on.  Particularly
effective is a disturbing scene where a mad--with lust, and in the literal
sense--Humbert tries to fuck a confession out of a hysterically laughing,
lipstick-smeared Lolita.  It's a creepy scene, one bound to get under
moviegoers' skin.  But it's likely the only one that will elicit any type
of emotional reaction from the audience--not even the inevitable tragic
conclusion packs much of a punch, if any.
    What makes  _Lolita_ all the more disappointing is that it is clearly less
than the sum of its parts, which all-too vividly display signs of life the
entire film the could have had.  Irons gives a beautifully nuanced
performance; while the audience is repulsed by his actions, one cannot help
but have some understanding for what he feels and why.  The
then-15-year-old Swain, who went on to co-star as John Travolta's
Lolita-ish daughter in _Face/Off_, more than holds her own, playing Lolita
as equal parts victim and vixen.  Ennio Morricone's score is hauntingly
sensual, as is the soft lensing of cinematographer Howard Atherton.  It's
unfortunate that their superlative work is in the service of a mediocre
vehicle.
    With films such as _Fatal_, _Indecent_, and _9_1/2_ Weeks_ under his belt,
Lyne seems to pride himself on making provocative films about sexuality.
_Lolita_ should have been the most provocative of them all; all the
individual ingredients were in place for a thoughtful, daring, yet
nonexploitative work.  Alas, his _Lolita_, with its distant earnestness and
leisurely pace, might as well have been a Merchant Ivory production.  (airs
August 2 on Showtime; "officially" opens in theatres September 25)

Saving Private Ryan (R) ****
    "War is hell."  No one questions the veracity this statement--over time,
it has become less a saying than a truism--but rarely does anyone ever give
serious thought to what exactly it means.  The opening 25-minute sequence
of Steven Spielberg's _Saving_Private_Ryan_ should change all that.
Depicting the invasion of France on D-day, June 6, 1944, as seen through
the eyes of Capt. John Miller (Tom Hanks), this section has a startling
visceral intensity that is cheapened by text descriptions.  To merely
describe the brutal, graphic violence, such as the severed limbs,
eviscerations, and the free-flowing and -gushing blood, is to discount its
sensory and emotional power; to describe it simply on those latter terms is
to diminish the bravery and honesty Spielberg exhibits in not shying away
from the raw carnage.  This bravura opening set piece is cinema in the
purest sense--the melding of audio, visuals, and all other individual
aspects of filmmaking into a greater whole: an experience whose effects are
not easily shaken, its memory not easily forgotten.  After the
well-intentioned but stately-to-a-chill _Amistad_, this explosive opening
announces that Spielberg has rebounded in a big way with this World War II
drama, a stunning piece of work that aims and hits the audience square in
the gut.
    The "Private Ryan" that must be "saved" is one James Francis Ryan, the
only survivor of four brothers in active duty in the war effort; as some
type of humanitarian mission, Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall (Harve
Presnell) dispatches a squad led by Capt. Miller to find Pvt. Ryan and send
him home as comfort to his grieving mother.  The mission, of course, is not
without its complications, not the least of which is the disinterest of
Miller and his squad, who are not terribly keen (to say the least) on
risking their lives for that of one man--a man they do not even know.
    Not surprisingly, the lives of some Capt. Miller's men are sacrificed
before they finally locate Pvt. Ryan (Matt Damon), but their loss makes
only a moderate impact.  _Private_Ryan_'s main weakness is the rather
one-dimensional crew with whom writer Robert Rodat surrounds Miller: Sgt.
Horvath (Tom Sizemore), Pvt. Reiben (Edward Burns), Cpl. Upham (Jeremy
Davies), Pvt. Caparzo (Vin Diesel), Pvt. Mellish (Adam Goldberg), Pvt.
Jackson (Barry Pepper), and Medic Wade (Giovanni Ribisi).  Only the wimpy
kid Upham comes off as close to a fully-realized character, but most of
personality he exhibits can be attributed to Davies's vivid, anguished
performance.  The other actors do well, but their roles are more shallowly
written and developed, half boiling down to single characteristics: hothead
(Reiben), Jew (Mellish), Bible-quoter (Jackson); the remaining are
nondescript.  Maybe it was a conscious decision by Rodat and Spielberg to
objectify the squad much like how most who serve in military combat are
seen as walking statistics, but it makes the risk of their lives a gambit
curiously low in emotional involvement.
    Compensating for the faceless squad members is the squad leader, Capt.
Miller,  _Private_Ryan_'s anchor in every way, ably leading his men and
serving as a strong, sympathetic emotional center amid the chaos.  Brought
to life in a well-modulated turn by Hanks, Miller is a consummate
professional and leader, but he is not immune to the psychological ravages
of war, which have now manifested themselves in the physical form of hand
tremors.  There are a couple of haunting wordless sequences where Miller
blankly watches the mayhem surrounding him like a lost child, bringing to
light a subconscious reason for his carrying out the "rescue" of Pvt. Ryan.
 It's not so much to follow orders and win a ticket home, as he says, but
rather to graft a purpose onto the senseless human toll, to put into
tangible human form the nebulous reasons behind the fighting--and his role
in all of it.
    By the film's end, _Saving_Private_Ryan_ reveals itself to be a rather
ironic title.  If he is indeed "saved," he is actually more damned--alive,
yes, but living with the burden of the men who sacrificed and were willing
to sacrifice themselves for his life, and the lingering doubt that the life
he would go on to lead would fully amount to the ones it cost.  Ultimately,
it's not Pvt. Ryan's salvation that Capt. Miller and his crew are fighting
for--it's their own.

Hollywood Hotline Featured Review
Polish Wedding (PG-13) * 1/2
    In this year's summer movie preview issue of _Entertainment_Weekly_,
Theresa Connelly described her writing-directing debut, _Polish_Wedding_,
as "a child that did not quite become the child I thought it would."  One
wonders what exactly she originally had in mind for this jumbled film, a
comedy-drama that appears doomed at its most basic elements.
    The family at the center of _Polish_Wedding_ is the Pzoniaks, which
consists of mother Jadzia (Lena Olin), father Bolek (Gabriel Byrne), sole
daughter Hala (Claire Danes) and four sons of varying degrees of
facelessness.  It's a large family, but there's not a sympathetic one in
the whole bunch, certainly not in the primary trio.  Jadzia takes pride in
building and maintaining a home and family, but she's kind of a hypocrite
since she's carrying on an affair with a businessman Rade Serbedzija).  Her
excuse for her affair is neglect from Bolek, who is such a passive wimp
that one cannot connect with his sadness and frustration.  Also, how could
he possibly pay so little attention to the saucy, sexy Jadzia?  Hala is a
spoiled, self-centered high school dropout whose reckless sexual
experimentation predictably leads to pregnancy.
    With such an unappealing set of characters, it's no surprise that
_Polish_Wedding_'s plot complications are far from involving.  Naturally,
Jadzia and Bolek would like Hala to marry the young cop, Russell Schuster
(Adam Trese), who fathered the child, but he refuses to make such a
commitment.  Ho-hum.  Another complication, involving the decidedly
un-virginal Hala being selected to crown a statue of the Virgin Mary, is
first played for laughs and then, inexplicably, as a Profound Statement in
the film's climax--which, ironically, is funnier than any of the film's
lame attempts at humor, such as a painfully labored slapstick attempt where
Jadzia leads her sons in a charge to beat up Russell.
    That scene is but one in a number of writing miscues by Connelly.  The
Jadzia-Bolek conflict is resolved in an overly pat way not unfamiliar to
sitcom viewers.  The Hala-Russell conflict isn't resolved in as contrived a
manner, but their ultimate resolution will leave viewers wondering if they
had missed something.  And then there's some atrocious dialogue, which I am
sure was not supposed to be as ridiculous as they sound: "Look at all these
pickles.  Just looking at them gives me such great sadness."
    What makes _Polish_Wedding_ all the more disappointing are the strong
performances by Byrne, Danes, and especially the fiery Olin.  They
obviously believed in Connelly and her material--a faith that audiences
will be hard-pressed to share.

IN BRIEF

Disturbing Behavior (R) no stars
    To borrow one of David Spade's quips on his old "Hollywood Minute" segment
on _Saturday_Night_Live_, I liked this movie better the first time I saw
it... when it was called _The_Stepford_Wives_.  In
_The_Cradle_Bay_Teens_--er, _Disturbing_Behavior_, a seemingly idyllic
Washington town hides a dark secret: in an effort to make their teens reach
their maximum potential, parents and a unscrupulous high school counselor
(Bruce Greenwood, a long way from Atom Egoyan's films) conspire in a
strange program that turns rebellious adolescents into robotic
do-gooders--"Blue Ribbons," as they are called.
    There isn't an original moment in Scott Rosenberg's derivative screenplay.
 When the _Stepford_ allusions tap out, he turns to _A_Clockwork_Orange_
for a climactic "conversion" sequence.  It is also incredibly predictable;
plot turns are telegraphed with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer.  He
even botches the de regueur "twist" ending, which is neither surprising nor
shocking nor of any real consequence.  It's hard to fathom what in the
script exactly attracted the involvement of a few _X-Files_ vets--director
David Nutter, composer Mark Snow (who wrote a terrifically eerie score that
the film doesn't deserve), and, in small roles, _X_ guest star Steve
Railsback (Duane Barry, the guy who kidnapped Scully) and recurrent Chris
Owens (Agent Jeffrey Spender, Cigarette-Smoking Man's son).  As Steve, the
hero with the requisite damaged past (he is haunted by the suicide of his
older brother), James Marsden has blue eyes and clean-cut looks tailor-made
for a _Bop_ pinup--and all the emotional depth and acting range of the page
it would be printed on.  Katie Holmes, the standout cast member of TV's
_Dawson's_Creek_, is wated as the token tattooed, body-pierced love
interest.  To paraphrase the theme of her hit show, you don't want to wait
for this film to be over.  Just leave.  Better yet, just don't go in the
first place.

The Negotiator (R) ***
    Even if you've seen the tell-all trailer, which idiotically divulges just
about every last plot turn, F. Gary Gray's hostage thriller is a tense,
entertaining ride.  Writers James DeMonaco and Kevin Fox cook up an
interesting central conceit: hostage negotiator as hostage taker himself,
so he knows all the little mind games and tricks that negotiators pull.
The astray negotiator is Danny Roman (Samuel L. Jackson), who, after being
framed for the murder of his partner and involvement in a laundering
scheme, takes an Internal Affairs officer (the late J.T. Walsh), among
others, hostage; Chris Sabian (Kevin Spacey) is the negotiator Danny
personally selects to mediate.  What makes this talk-heavy actioner (and,
yes, there _is_ action) work is the intriguing battle of wits between two
formidable, intelligent opponents, expertly played by former
_A_Time_to_Kill_ co-stars Jackson and Space, and the assured, skillful
directorial hand of Gray.  (opens July 29)

    In David Schwimmer's latest fizzled attempt at movie stardom, he stars as
a sportscaster who hires his best friend (Jason Lee) to seduce his
girlfriend (Mili Avital) when he questions her fidelity in this romantic

Krippendorf's Tribe (PG-13)
    The latest in Disney's line of execrable jungle-themed comedies is this
lowbrow effort about a professor (Richard Dreyfuss) who fabricates New
Guinea's last "undiscovered" tribe.  (Touchstone Home Video)

Nil by Mouth (R)
    Gary Oldman made his writing/directing debut with this grim look at
English working class life.  Kathy Burke and Ray Winstone star.  (Columbia

The Winter Guest (R)
    Alan Rickman makes his directorial debut with this drama focusing on the
residents of a very cold Scottish town.  Emma Thompson and her
mother, Phyllida Law, star.  (New Line Home Video)
