Six Days, Seven Nights (PG-13) ***
In recent years, Harrison Ford has been such a grave screen presence,
scowling through the likes of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series,
_The_Fugitive_, and last year's smash _Air_Force_One_, that one wonders if
the rogue charm that made him such a superstar had been completely drained
from his system. Apparently, it was just lying dormant. With Ivan
Reitman's enjoyable romantic comedy/adventure _Six_Days,_Seven_Nights_, the
lovable scoundrel is back, giving audiences a fresh reminder of why Ford is
one of the most enduring and popular modern screen icons.
Ford plays Quinn Harris, a carefree and slightly slobby (endearingly so)
pilot in the Tropics whose broken-down plane crashes in a storm, stranding
him and his charter, New York magazine editor Robin Monroe (Anne Heche), on
a deserted island. Of course, the sophisticated Robin and the
salt-of-the-earth Quinn are at odds long before the plane goes down, and
all manner of hostile repartee is exchanged between the two from their
first meeting. While some of the lines fall flat, the formulaic motions
work because of the unexpectedly electric chemistry between Ford and Heche.
Both actors, who have largely done serious works as of late, seem
liberated by the lack of dramatic weight on their shoulders, and they
deliver their zingers, as weak as they sometimes are, with beguiling abandon.
Naturally, there's nothing like a life-threatening crisis to bring two
people together, and Quinn and Robin's warmup to each other is sped up even
further by the arrival of some bloodthirsty pirates. Granted, some
conflict needed to be introduced on the island, but this tacked-on
development from writer Michael Browning is a bit too obviously thrown in
for the purpose of adding gratuitous action scenes. But the point is to
get the two together, and their newfound affection causes complications for
both, but mostly Robin, who came to the islands on a vacation with her
fiance Frank (David Schwimmer), who frantically awaits her return on the
home island.
Reitman, and old, reliable hand at breezy comedies, keeps the pace brisk
and capably handles the more action-oriented sequences. His big
accomplishment, however, is bringing the old, smiling Ford back. As
appealing and charismatic as he always is, Ford hasn't been quite this
charming and affable in years; he's obviously having a blast, and the
audience cannot help but have one along with him. Holding her own is
Heche, whose scrappy character never becomes the screaming ninny she
initially promises to be (as the plane goes down, she frantically pops
stress pills). She can take her lumps, physical and otherwise, just as
well as Quinn, making her a formidable foil and ideal match.
Formulaic and light as a feather, _Six_Days,_Seven_Nights_ could be cited
as a classic example of the summer "popcorn" movie season's lack of
substance. It's certainly fluff, but it's unpretentious, undemanding,
and--most importantly--fun fluff that goes down as easily as a frothy pina
colada on a balmy tropical beach. Pass the popcorn.
IN BRIEF
Can't Hardly Wait (PG-13) **
Trust me, you _can_ wait for this messy throwback to '80s teen comedies.
A big, post-graduation blowout bash is the setting at which a number of new
high school graduates set out to resolve some long-simmering issues, most
prominently the shy Preston's (Ethan Embry) unspoken love for the popular
Amanda (Jennifer Love Hewitt), who was just dumped by her jock boyfriend
Mike (Peter Facinelli). This thread is supposed to be the emotional hook
of the piece, but it is done in by the underwritten character of Amanda;
Preston claims to see the "person inside" her glammed-up exterior, but the
audience is never treated to a glimpse of this purported interior soul.
All that shows up on screen is an above-it-all, constantly bitching snob,
and as such writer-directors Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont do a
disservice to the engaging performance of Embry.
Far more involving--and upstaging the central action--is a subplot
following the unlikely but inevitable romance between Preston's acerbic
best friend (the delightful Lauren Ambrose) and white homeboy Kenny (a
hilarious Seth Green), who find themselves locked in a bathroom together.
This thread is sweet yet raucous, and often very funny, which is the mix
Kaplan and Elfont obviously strived for in their other storylines. But all
else, including a predictable arc about the geeky valedictorian's (Charlie
Korsmo) beef with Mike, quickly grows tiresome, as does the movie as a whole.

"Kenny could be killed" NO WAY!!! Kenny's the best thing about the Lizards.
But an awesome idea nonetheless. And yes I think it would be BIG box office.
Where do I go with this idea (I'd like to cash in on it!)

I'm wondering if your rental store carries or can get the Tiffany Shepis

Generation X, Heavy Black Smokestack, Shampoo Horns, etc.
I have seen them but would like to watch them again. Any ideas on how to go
about finding them?

Gary, once my brain starts working properly I'll try to do some fancy

BTW, A Perfect Murder sucked.

Ladies and gentlemen of the 54th airbourne,
I too am puzzled by Bruce's analysis. I would have guessed the movie would
be mediocre to good.
I can't see a film with Michael Douglas and Ms. Paltrow bombing.
Anybody have any thoughts on the Anne Heche-Harrison Ford movie? Is it
worth a look-see?
Whadda ya think Bruce?
PS Whilst you were in Hawaii (LUCKY DOG) I had to settle for time at a
Casino in Verona, NY. It's a place called Turning Stone Casino Resort, and
I give it ****. FYI
Speaking of Casinos, Is the movie Casino good? I never did see it!

So it's come to this. Most of you know of my admiration for the Ford man
so I'm sure you must understand the difficulties with this review. Yep -
that's right - the first bad Harrison Ford movie ever. I'm so biased the
other way you'd think nothing could be this bad - but...damn it! I just
couldn't buy the whole thing - it felt very forced, predictable, fake,
obvious, redundant, old, tired, rehashed with poorly written dialogue to
boot! The chemistry was not there - there was no emotions with their
characters - at times it felt like I was watching a bad 80's movie in which
a deceased character named Bernie might show up any moment. I am sorry to
say this and I hope that I won't go to Hell because of this review - but
this is one stinky movie. I have to fail it. I have to...you don't
understand - my reputation is at stake! Urrrghhh. Well at least he is
close to signing a deal to work with Robert Zemeckis for his next picture
(and then Indy 4 of course!)

I saw this one over the weekend. If you don't expect too much from it,
it's entertaining. If you're a Harrison Ford fan I think you'll like it.
Anne Heche and Harrison Ford were good together. I had some doubts myself
as to whether or not I would see her believable in a heterosexual role, but
I didn't have a problem with her. I think her timing is pretty good and
with some time could be a pretty good comic actress. I think with the
material provided for them, Ford and Heche did well. The movie is
definitely fluff and doesn't make any pretensions about any thing more
serious. It was all formula and totally predictable, but it knew itself to
be this. That's what had it be fun. It called itself what it was. On a
scale from 1 to 10, I would rate this movie a 5.

6day7n wasn't as good as I expected it to be. I was looking for
more of an action movie i guess. There wasn't much action, so it was
pretty boring. Some parts were funny but that was it. It's an average
movie. (**) out of 4

All I can say about A perfect Murder is that it was completely
uninvolving. There was no tension, thrills or chills, mystery or
humor. Douglas was doing the same Gecko character from Wall Street
and although he does it well, I just am not interested anymore. The
boyfriend was a non-character as was Paltrow.
How do you describe nothing? All I can say is that my emotions ran
the gamut from a to b while watching and I think my emotional
highlight (b!!!) was while eating the taco I snuck into the theater.
I haven't seen 6 Days and probably will not bother. As much of a fan
of Harrison Ford as I am, I haven't heard anything that makes me want
to see it. I don't think that it is Ford's first bad movie. I'm
sure most will disagree but I thought Airforce One was awful. Just
because you can make a jet appear to careen around an airport like
race car does not mean you should. I thought is was a prime example
of filmmakers overusing fX just becasue they can.
I think that Casino was a case of Scorcese making one too many mob
films. It was well done but much too familiar. Been there done
that. While I could buy Joe Pesci as a tough guy in Goodfellas, it
was stretching it for Casino. And there were some scenes that I
thought were simply gratuitous. At one point a guy is killed by
having his head crushed in a vice. That seemed more appropriate for
the latest Friday the 13th installment. I heard that they actually
had his eye pop out but cut it for the ratings.
Is anybody getting the new Gone With the Wind print in their town?
In case you haven't heard they have made a new Technicolor transfer
that is supposed to be beautiful. It is getting a limited theatrical
release (to promote the new video I'm sure). I haven't seen the movie
in a few years and am really looking forward to seeing it in a theater
again. Evidently there is a controversy because some feel that the
new Technicolor process is not true to the original. I'm sure that
it is just fine.
I'm off to Chicago tomorrow. Does anybody have suggestions for
things to do there? I'd like to hear some good blues.
bye,
bb
