  128.  I dunno if someone can help me but I don't seem to be
  129. able to hear the music playing from that place - I
  130. just downloaded the Quicktime Plug In from the site it
  131. gives you a link to but when I load up the radio it
  132. just has that grey bar with a play arrow at the left
  133. but no sound - I've tried adjusting the volume and
  134. pressing the play button but it seems to be something
  135. more technical - anyone got any ideas?

  257. * air - everybody hertz (astralwerks) 
  258. this particular compilation of remixes, remakes,
  259. and covers of a few of air's tracks off of 10,000
  260. hertz legend is all right. the track remixed are:
  261. 'don't be light', 'how does it make you feel?',
  262. and 'people in the city'. mr. oizo gets things
  263. started with his remix of 'don't be light', which
  264. is simply amazing. using his glitch dub tactics,
  265. he filters any cuteness from the track, and
  266. throws it in the french gutter where he resides
  267. and likes it. the eerie ending with the vocal
  268. part is disturbing. adrian sherwood and modjo
  269. provide some nice covers of 'how does it make you
  270. feel?' and 'people in the city' respectively. the
  271. neptunes tear up 'don't be light' for their own
  272. maniacal purposes. the hacker develops a return
  273. to the rave with 'don't be light', and the malibu
  274. remix is a nice, flowing piece of electronic
  275. brilliance. these are the gems of the ep.
  276. however, astralwerks still doesn't seem to
  277. understand that no one likes edits, as they place
  278. two edits on this ep for 'don't be light' (as if
  279. the fact thomas bangalter doing the editting
  280. grants any kudos) and 'how does it make you
  281. feel?' they waste track space. also, jack
  282. lahana's remix of 'people in the city' is just
  283. shock rock at it's worst. poor production,
  284. horrible lyrics (b.i.t.c.h.e.s in the city is not
  285. funny after a minute), and it's way too long.
  286. however, the cd rounds out nicely with 'the way
  287. you look tonight', a return to the mellow for air
  288. and very well produced. the live video is nice
  289. for all your air fans, and does the track
  290. ('people in the city') justice. 5 out of 10. 
  291.  
  292. * boards of canada - geogaddi (warp) 
  293. absolutely amazing. if i could stop the review at
  294. this point, anyone who has heard this disc would
  295. understand what i am saying. boards of canada,
  296. following on their underground success music has
  297. a right to children, release geogaddi on the
  298. unsuspecting masses. warp really found a gem with
  299. the duo, as they produce an absolutely brilliant
  300. album. each track is sparsed on either side with
  301. their signature short tracks and ambient noise
  302. pieces to provide transition and to overload your
  303. senses in bliss. 'music is math' is perfect to
  304. introduce their album with rolling trip-hop beats
  305. and their ambient noise. 'gyroscope' is a harder
  306. edged spanking of your mind, with wicked beats
  307. over filtered synth work. '1969' is an epic
  308. track, with vocoded lyrics over subtle, but
  309. forceful beats. i could go on and on, but there
  310. is not a track on this album i do not like, nor a
  311. track that isn't anything short of epic. layers
  312. upon layers upon layers of lo-fi ambient noise
  313. and glitch beats, washing over your mentals and
  314. commanding your attention. amazing. 10 out of 10.

  317. * dan the automator - wanna buy a monkey?
  318. (sequence) 
  319. the first mix cd from sequence records (a
  320. sub-label of ultra records), dan the automator
  321. puts together an eclectic mix of hip-hop, rock,
  322. and tons of tracks he's produced to create a
  323. wonderful mix cd. the tracklisting features
  324. automator's work on deltron 3030, an air remix,
  325. gorillaz, and even last year's disappointment
  326. lovage. interspersed is also some rock tracks
  327. from tortoise and doves, which blend near
  328. perfectly in between hip-hop seletions. he also
  329. brings along his good friends brand nubian,
  330. dilated peoples, and masta ace to make sure this
  331. mix set stays with the hip-hop. a bit of a
  332. disappointment is learning that 'additional
  333. scratch production thanks to kid koala' on the
  334. inside, which kind of detracts from his work.
  335. also, at times the mixing is off or too cluttered
  336. to be smooth enough to flow, but sometimes the
  337. tracks blend so well that you forget there is a
  338. transition. and that's hard with hip-hop as any
  339. hip-hop dj will tell you. much better release
  340. from dan this year, and does give hope to the
  341. sequence records label in the future. 6 out of
  342. 10. 
  343.  
  344. * dimitri from paris - after the playboy mansion
  345. (astralwerks) 
  346. dimtri returns with two discs of slamming french
  347. house and his secret re-edits of old disco tunes
  348. to keep the party going once the playboy mansion
  349. is over. digging through a bazillion dusty
  350. crates, dim pulls together a slew of rare tracks
  351. and puts them together on two separate cds:
  352. laidback and uplifting. the laidback disc is just
  353. that: laidback. meandering through breaks,
  354. hip-hop, and house - dimitri combines the smooth
  355. disco sounds that he's known for with a near
  356. perfect mix of tracks that really just make you
  357. want to relax. the uplifting mix is a grouping of
  358. uptempo house tracks that will certainly keep the
  359. party going into the afterhours, with not only
  360. great 4/4 action, but with themes that make you
  361. smile and grind a little closer to the person you
  362. are dancing with, or just cut loose on your own.
  363. it doesn't matter when it's that late - it just
  364. makes sense. this album will be enjoyed by fans
  365. of night at the playboy mansion or people who
  366. have enjoyed disco in the past for the new disco.
  367. it's nothing new from dimitri, but it's all about
  368. keeping the party going. 7 out of 10. 
  369.  
  370. * fog - fog (ninja tune) 
  371. against my better judgment, i picked up the fog
  372. album. my reasoning was that maybe they just
  373. picked a bad single and that the rest of the
  374. album would be better. and it is. moving between
  375. bizarre guitar samples, leftfield beats, and lots
  376. of crazy sounds, fog creates a world of noise
  377. that appeals to both the indie and the leftfield
  378. crowd. pneumonia really was the only possible
  379. single from the album that can stand on its own,
  380. so i don't blame ninja tune for releasing that.
  381. however, the rest of the album seems to be so
  382. much better. fans of kid koala's scratch records
  383. and other leftfield bands will enjoy this romp
  384. through sound. it does require your full
  385. attention to appreciate it, and shouldn't be
  386. listened to at work, or while trying to
  387. concentrate on something else. a true listening
  388. piece. 5 out of 10. 
  389.  
  390. * skin to skin - temenos (waveform) 
  391. you are on an island. it's a sacred island, full
  392. of monks walking back and forth, humming softly
  393. in deference. beams of light pass by your body as
  394. you walk closer and closer to the sanctum.
  395. somewhere far away, a stringed instrument is
  396. playing. this is the mood that is created by
  397. swedish duo skin to skin. a bit of a different
  398. direction from the waveform label, skin to skin
  399. creates meditative ambient and dub music for your
  400. ears to listen to and your mind to experience.
  401. there are three tunes on the album: temenos
  402. (meaning sanctuary), daimon (meaning guardian
  403. spirit), and nekyia (meaning rebirth from the
  404. underworld). the track names when placed with the
  405. music create a soundworld that should enchant
  406. even the passive listener, though the music
  407. itself is not passive - just slow building.
  408. daimon is layers upon layers of power chanting,
  409. and nekyia rounds out the album with a descent
  410. into a sonic underworld and back again. welcome
  411. to temenos - transporation provided by skin to
  412. skin. 8 out of 10. 
  413.  
  414. * something j/dj maxximus - mercedes bentley vs.
  415. versaci armani (warp) 
  416. i missed picking this up when it came out because
  417. it was filed under something j instead of dj
  418. maxximus. upon examination of the case, i should
  419. have know this was the... errr... case. anyway.
  420. warp is trying to expand their horizons past the
  421. usual idm beats and freaks into other realms. in
  422. some cases, it's brilliant (see boards of
  423. canada), in others it's crap (see vincent gallo).
  424. unfortunately, 'mercedes bentley vs. versace
  425. armani' falls closer to the crap side of the
  426. range. this particular single is a neo-rave track
  427. with old new york underground synth work and an
  428. mc who is talking about how he owes everything to
  429. mercedes, bentley, versace, and armani. nothing
  430. special. the dub plate remix of the track is just
  431. a lot of the annoying vocals taken out, which is
  432. actually kind of nice, but still reminds me of
  433. the a-side, which is somewhat disappointing. i am
  434. not a fan of nu skool rave, so this isn't my cup
  435. of tea. the production isn't even that great.
  436. poor effort from warp. 3 out of 10.
