Okay at our school we have this thing called Channel One which is a TV show
that has news that they play during last period. In between two segments they
played Moby's "Southside". I told all the class about him. It was awesome!

Subject: (mobility) Play popularity
Just thought I would add my post to all of this stuff today as I am sitting
here at my desk listening to WDMHFSB. Love that song. Funny how I found
out I had some sort of heart problem at about the same time I first heard
that song. Now for lack of a better category to place Play I am going to
say it is Electronic / Dance / Techno. Here in the States techno /
electronic / dance / trance / and whatever is just now starting to get big.
Yes there was an explosion of this type of music a few years back, but it
seems now people are really starting to take notice of it. Prodigy is
quoted as saying, "The US is about 2 years behind the UK in the music
scene." I think that this may be true. I mean, look in your big record
stores now. It used to be dance / techno music got stuck in the last four
rows of rock cd's in the Various section. Now, the dance / techno sections
are large enough to even rival the rock sections in most music stores. Now
if that is not saying anything about the gaining popularity of this type of
music then I don't know what would. I think that when Play came out people
thought it was just another dance cd. Being played in movies, commercials,
malls, and other places has most definately helped the growing popularity of
this cd. Yes the people may not have known at first who it was they heard
in the commercial, but if they really liked what they heard they probably
asked around and found out it was Moby and then went out and bought the CD.
I believe it has taken a while for people to realize that it is not just
another techno/dance cd. People are now realizing that this album touches
the soul in a way that no other artist in this genre has seemed to achieve.
Yes Moby has a large body of work out there, but this cd's content has
struck a chord with the people of the world that I really do not think
anyone can explain why so many people like it. I mean this album is liked
by people young and old. I really cannot think of too many artists that you
can play for both a 50 year old person and a 16 year old person and both of
them want to go out and buy the cd. And that is what Play has accomplished.
Anyway, these are my thoughts. If they makes sense to you, GOOD. If not,
well, I am not even sure I am making any sense to myself right at the
moment. I cannot wait until Moby comes out with his next project.

Subject: (mobility) Commercial familiarity
As much as I hate knowing that every single Play song has found its way from
being a beautiful piece of audial art to another ingredient in an ad, I have
to reluctantly agree that commercials do help, but probably only in a minor
sense, depending how hard people try to find out who the composer was.
Just like one of our newbies was telling recently about her Dad who liked
Play after hearing "Find My Baby" on that horrible MasterCard ad, I've
started to listen to songs on ads which are easy to find thanks to Napster.
Just type in the ad name, what you think the song's name might be, whatever.
Now I'm into Nicola Conte and those infectious Brazilian-influenced songs.
She (he?) may still not get a penny from me, but she's got one more fan of
the music. And that's kind of what Moby wants, too.
Sigh, never thought I'd be saying all that. Especially when I get mental
movies to every Moby song that I've loved & then have to watch Tiger Woods,
or a cheesy man with flowers in the rain, or a dancing Jenna Elfman pooh-pooh
on all that.
And welcome newbbies! I've been hella poor this whole time, but still have
found ways to listen to plenty of Moby & there's so much more great stuff
than what's on Play & MobySongs 1993-1998. Just keep looking, like finding
