think its one of his best albums, but not the absolute best by far. Why did
it take so long for him to become some-what popular, especially since it was
released over 18 months ago? (I say some-what popular because he's still not
exactly a household name, nor do his overall sales match anything in the
mainstream music industry). Has anyone read anything from critics
explaining this, or does anyone have any ideas themselves?

I was watching some marketing commentary about Sting's resuccess with Desert
Rose was because he allowed it to be licensed to commercials, which brought
interest, so I really do think the commercial thing helped Play a lot. Moby
also got WB promotion which of course didn't hurt anything. And his
popularity came the same time as Macy Gray, both musicians polar opposites
from the popular music scene at the time. So Moby has come as a breathe of
fresh air for many people who are tired of the boy bands and bubble gum.
Also, electronica/techno (even though Play isn't exactly traditional in that
respect) is now becoming the trendy thing. Hell, BT is becoming popular
(which is very much deserved). This can probably be attributed to mainly
Fatboy Slim, because as cheesy as he can be, he was really the person that
became madly popular and brought life to the techno/electronica scene in the
mai!
nstream. Not to mention the whole controversy over raves and E and all
that jazz.

Just a quick analysis. Play is great, but I would love for him to return to
the animal rights era.

Moby himself has an answer to this question in the NME interview to which
