  248. request for um... Blind Melon.... so I played the only
  249. song by them I can stand, their cover of "3 is a magic
  250. number".... which is on the Schoolhouse rock tribute
  251. cd Moby did Verb on..... so hey I figures I'll play
  252. Moby too.......... This was the first time I'd heard
  253. this song in a while.... actually, this was the FIRST
  254. Moby song I'd ever heard (second being Revolver, 3rd
  255. being Go.... all of which are, like covers (well sort
  256. of for go ;) ) and I forgot how much the song ROCKS.

  612.  than an hour and a half of bizarre covers and
  613. long-forgotten hits, most of
  614.  them unrehearsed, many of them sloppier than you
  615. could imagine. 
  616.  
  617.  All wearing identical black button-down shirts,
  618. matching black suits, skinny
  619.  white ties and oversized eyeglasses, it was easy to
  620. spot Moby and his
  621.  fellow band members as they drank beers and mingled
  622. with the audience
  623.  before the show. In addition to Moby, Mushroom and
  624. Fancy, the group that
  625.  took the stage included Paul Yates, a friend of
  626. Moby's, on tambourine. 
  627.  
  628.  "It was like a wedding band gone wrong," said
  629. musician John Hancock,
  630.  who witnessed the whole fabulously awful thing. "But
  631. in a wonderful way. It
  632.  was almost like a wedding band who'd gotten all
  633. pissed-off at each other
  634.  and decided to each do their own thing." 
  635.  
  636.  "If anyone knows the lyrics or chords better than we
  637. do, come on up,"
  638.  announced Fancy as the band warmed up for the show,
  639. which included
  640.  unique takes on, get this, Jim Croce's "Time in a
  641. Bottle," Bob Seger's
  642.  "Night Moves," Billy Idol's "Dancing with Myself,"
  643. Joan Jett's "I Love Rock
  644.  And Roll" and Kenny Roger's "The Gambler." 
  645.  
  646.  Hancock, who described the vibe between the musicians
  647. as "very
  648.  haphazard, mostly straightforward, but definitely
  649. bizarre," said most of the
  650.  audience seemed to be in on the joke, and loving it. 
  651.  
  652.  If it came from the '80s, the All-American Band
  653. covered it, and with great
  654.  energy: the usually reserved Moby howled the lyrics
  655. and paraded around the
  656.  stage like fluff pop star Rick Springfield conducting
  657. a cheerleading rally.
  658.  Like a mirror facing a mirror, the band was obviously
  659. a parody of itself; it
  660.  was like listening to a cover band cover a cover
  661. band. 
  662.  
  663.  Shelby Meade, of Nasty Little Man, publicists for
  664. Moby, had her own unique
  665.  take on the show, which also included covers of "99
  666. Luft Balloons" by Nena
  667.  and Guns 'n Roses' MTV hit "Sweet Child O' Mine."
  668. "Hot. Sweaty.
  669.  Uncontrollable dancing. Horrible at moments and
  670. breathtaking at others,"
  671.  quoth Meade. Like the invitation promised, "come in
  672. and let us lay you down
  673.  with the covers." 
  674.  
  675.  "I've seen a Russian band do American cover songs,"
  676. one friend shouted to
  677.  me over the thump-thump-thump of bass during Neil
  678. Diamond's "Sweet
  679.  Caroline." "They didn't speak any English," he
  680. yelled, "They were singing
  681.  phonetically, and they were better than this band." 
  682.  
  683.  Others in the audience were less amused, especially
  684. with Fancy's vocals,
  685.  consistently flat and off-key. "I'm a musician," an
  686. annoyed friend
  687.  commented. "And this is just gross to watch." 
  688.  
  689.  During the entire length of his mule-like crooning of
  690. Bonnie Tyler's "Total
  691.  Eclipse of the Heart," a female audience member held
  692. a lighter aloft
  693.  dangerously close to the singer's face. Whether this
  694. was a sign of adoration
  695.  or a threat was unclear. 
  696.  
  697.  For the brave who stayed through to the end of the
  698. 25-song set, there was a
  699.  rousing, bongo-accompanied version of Bow Wow Wow's
  700. "I Want Candy."
  701.  The future of the #1 All-American Cover Band seems
  702. unclear. Conflicting
  703.  stories abounded after the performance. 
  704.  
  705.  "We're going to L.A. next week to start recording,"
  706. Mushroom enthused
  707.  after the show. 
  708.  
  709.  "At Ocean Way Studios," added Moby. 
  710.  
  711.  "It's just going to be fun recording party songs,"
  712. Mushroom continued. "To
  713.  make a lot of money for our musician friends who did
  714. the songs." 
  715.  
  716.  A source at Nasty Little Man thought differently.
  717. "L.A.? What? No, Moby will
  718.  be in Europe next week." 
  719.  
  720.  But what about this record? "I don't know anything
  721. about it," she said with a
  722.  conciliatory giggle. "You know Moby..." 
  723.  
  724.  Was it all a dream? Was the band just having fun, or
  725. was this a disturbing
  726.  sign of things to come? 
  727.  
  728.  "It's always fun to be terrible," said Moby brightly
  729. after the triumphant
  730. show. 
  731.

  775. all we know maybe Moby and crew decided to do this at
  776. the very last
  777. moment..therefore had no time to rehearse...which
  778. seems to me would
  779. make things sloppy :)
