Im tired of all this ill talk of ed simons. he is the friggin' man. Tom is
cool, but by himself he would just be the 'chemical brother' and that just
doesnt sound right. Also, Ed has credit in writing all the songs, so you
have to give him props for that.

I recently listened to my "Exit Planet Dust" cd after not having listened to
it in a year and I came to a conclusion. "Leave Home" is really not that
great of a song compared to others on the cd. I think "Chico's Groove" "One
Too Many Mornings" and "Chemical Beats" are all much better songs. Why
werent they promoted as much as "Leave Home" or "Life is Sweet" which is also
not that great of a song. I overall could find much better songs on "Exit
Planet Dust" than "Leave Home" and "Life is Sweet." Does anyone else agree
with me on this?

Someone posted to this list a little while back that
this movie would be on. I've been keeping my eye on
htis movie since they were making it, and I couldn't
find anyone that had the sundance channel yesterday to
watch it. Last I heard Blockbuster didn't want it on
their shelves, it's about raves so they don't want it.
Did anyone get a chance to see it? Maybe tape it? I'd
like a copy if it was taped.
I'm not sure if Moby's music or Moby is in it. On
their website (which doesn't seem to be up to date)
there's a list of dj's that I believe are in the
movie-spinning I'll guess- and he's one of them.
If you want to check out info on this movie go to
www.technofilm.com
Or, if anyone knows if or when it'll be on again that
would help too.
Later
Emily

Yeah, that movie was pretty crappy, but the music was good. Funny thing
about that sountrack is the fact that it was the first time I heard one of
Moby's songs knowing it was Moby. I had heard his music before, but never
knew who it was by. That is also where I heard Underworld for the first
time. Pearl's Girls is my favorite songs of theirs. My favorite Moby song
would have to be "Living".
I was wondering what everyone's interpretation of "Living" was. When I hear
this song, what comes into my mind is someone losing a loved one, but has to
go on "living" without this person and the realization that he must be
strong because that is how his friend would have wanted it to be. That is
the thought that goes through my mind when I hear this song. Anyway, y'all
have a good day!
Tim

Interesting interpretation. Especially since Moby has said
that his original title for the track was "I Just Can't Go
On Living". He shortened it either because he thought it was
too long or too depressing. I can't remember which.
Personally, I don't have a specific interpretation for the
song, just a general swell of emotion that builds from
contemplative, almost somber, even, as the song begins, and
progresses to it's expressive, joyous climax.

Hybrid's Tour Journal - Week 2
http://www.distinctiverecords.com/site/news/hybridtour2.html
Here is the text...check the site though:
Hybrid Tour: Week Two
It's amazing how far off your
geography can be of the
States. I thought Portland was over
by Washington, and
why isn't Phillidelphia by Seattle?
A quick look at the
map that charts the number of gigs
we haven't done and
Portland appears to be on the
northen west coast,
apparently. This is the proper start
of the small venues
we'll be going to and just like in
the UK, the little gigs are
always mental. An expectant crowd
greets us with a roar
and promptly goes into orbit for the
next 45 minutes. We
managed to meet loads of very clued
up clubbers at the
aftershow party (basement room in
between the dressing
rooms under the stage), especially
Josh, a true lover of
breaks and beats who has since
e-mailed his mates in
San Diego and Portland and told them
to come and find
us. Next port of call, the West
Coast home of house,
San Fransisco.
We arrive in the morning and wake up
just in time to
watch the view over the misty bay
with the tiny island of
Alcatraz looming out of the haze.
San Fransisco is one of
our favourite citys in the US mostly
because of the
friends we met at Spundae last
November while on tour,
Guive, Kelly (now with Funky Techno
Tribe), Jerry
Bonham and Troy, the men responsible
for one of the
best clubs in the world who looked
after us so well and
also the home city for Karl our
technical guru. The venue
for the next three days is The
Warfield which has graced
such diverse bands The Grateful
Dead, The Prodigy and
Sly and the Family Stone and is in
possibly the weirdest
end of town you couldn't wish to be
in. With three huge
tour busses and two 18 wheeler
lorries parked round the
back of the venue, the local loonies
have a field day
talking nonsense to an overtired
crew and you start to
wonder if San Fransisco the American
home of Turrets
Syndrome. The venue itself is an
ageing but beautiful
30s style theatre with a huge
balcony covered in red
velvet seats reaching up an
unfeasably steep slope up
to the ornate ceiling above. Sound
check is swift and we
aquaint ourselves with the dressing
rooms and get
introduced to Paula from Moby's
management company,
Terry from the flyering and
marketing team and a
number of important record company
execs just to make
pre-gig nerves even easier to deal
with. Unfortunately
the first of three gigs isn't the
best time to have nearly
everybody involved in putting our
records out watching
us play for the first 25 minutes
with no monitoring at all.
Nice. Luckily no one even realised
that we were having
kittens on stage trying to listen to
what was bouncing
back from the gigantic sound system
hoping to god the
beats and basslines were in time. We
must be getting
good at this too pull that little
cover up off. The next two
gigs get better and better after
sorting out the technical
problems and by the third night it's
a pleasure to be on
stage rather than a white knuckle
ride wondering if your
actually going to be able to hear
what we're doing. We
also get taken to meet one of the
West Cost gurus of
dance radio, are rare breed in the
States apparently, Aron
Axelson at Live 105 who we meet in a
downtown radio
studio with the sounds of Ram Crew
blaring out of the
reception. We like this guy already.
He's a really
informal bloke who made us feel
really at home talking
live on air to a hundred thousand
listeners, a mean feat
in anyone's books. An hour of
discussing UK vs US
dance music and the local scene and
we're on the way to
the great establishment that is
Spundae to DJ. Greeted
by Guive and his rather swanky Merc
droptop outside,
we're glad to back behind the
relative saftey of a pair of
turntables. The Spundae crowd are as
always a really
receptive mob who don't get
flummoxeed by the mix of
UK house, funky trance and breaks, a
vast improvment
on Salt Lake City. 5am, I think
we're back on the bus, or
is it a hotel room? Dunno, we'll
find out tomorrow.
Santa Barbara is the next venue and
is the most unusual
interior of any concert hall I've
ever seen. There's a row
of what looks like a cross between
old Ibiza town terraces
and a Mexican ranch all with a mock
starry sky in the
ceiling. Are we outdoors or is the
owner a bit handy with
the interior design? Nice place,
shame it's all seating and
we're playing REALLY early. A
politely enthusiastic
crowd claps from the comfort of
their seats as we breeze
through the set, and rapidly realise
that Santa Barbara
isn't quite the dance mecca that San
Fransisco had
been. Unfortunately our mentor,
Richard Ford from
Distinctive has to fly back to
London so we say our
goodbys and it's back on the bus and
off to LA for a
very hot and sticky couple of days.
105 degrees
according to the diabolical weather
channel. So, who's got
a spare pair of shorts? More to the
point, where's my
bloody sunglasses?
The bus eventually pulls in at 2 am
in what only could be
described as a scene out of Colours,
is this actually
Compton or have we got lost on the
way to Crenshaw?
The Comfort Inn (complete and utter
contradiction) is
home for the night, one star or half
star rooms sir, and
would you like some attitude with
your check-in ?
Welcome to LA. The next day, the
lovely Sheniza from
Kinetic Records (our US home) takes
us to meet a
bonafide LA film executive at
Warners palatial West
Coast office to deliver a copy of
the album. On entering
his office, you can't help but
notice the multi platinum
discs for the Bodyguard soundtrack,
13 million copies in
the US alone. A quick chat backed up
by some banter
about Russian orchestras and we're
on our way. On the
way out we see him leaving for
probably one of many
lunches that day with the album
blaring out of his
soft-top Jag. It's a surreal idea to
think of Mr LA fronting
down Sunset Strip with 'If I
Survive' booming out. The
evening rolls round and we've got an
informal album
launch in a club called The Factory
run by a lovely
young lady from Australia called Dan
and we get a
chance to catch up with some friends
we've met on our
travels, the hugely talented Ryland
Allison and his gang,
Stephanie Rae ex Mute and Ultra
Records, Suzanne
(BT's manager) and Gaetaan Shurre,
the technical wizard
employed by Sasha, BT, Rowan Blades
and most of the
worldwide trance mafia. A blur of
records, bussiness
cards, whiskey and being told off
for smoking behind the
DJ console and we're back at a
studio in the foothills of
Hollywood doing what musicians do
best, play records,
get drunk and generally geek out
over the amount of
studio gear we haven't seen before.
Really time to get
some sleep, daybreak and busy
promotional schedules
don't really go hand in hand. Still
can't find my sunnys.
