oi there mobilizers,
i've just completed not only a remix, but also a video remix of hymn. i've
got a copy of it up in realvideo format (150kbps, 3.1megs, 2:50) at
http://www.djmagic.com/moby/moby-hymn-phonicoids_behind_the_eyes_mix.rm
in case you can't tell by the filename in the link, it's the "behind the
eyes mix", and i'm also known as phonicoid.
hope you all enjoy it, a good deal of intensive effort went into it.
keep moving,

Hiya. I went to the Brighton show last Tuesday (1.Feb) at the Concorde and I
had an amazing time. It was probably one of the best shows I've ever attended.
The show was set to start at 8p with "special guests," but the guests never
showed. It didn't matter much to me because I didn't end up getting there
until a quarter till 10p, anyway. Moby went on a little past 10p.
Since it was my first time seeing Moby live, I can't tell you how it was
different from his earlier shows, but I think I can remember enough to give you
an idea of things.
My Weakness was played before the start of the show as the opener, with an
empty stage. I was right in front, and the bass was.. funky.
Band and Moby came on stage, Moby said a quick "Hello everybody" and
immediately went into Find my Baby. After that I believe he did Porcelain,
introducing it by saying, "This song is a delicate little love song."
I can't really remember the order of songs after those two, but mostly he
pumped Play, as you might imagine. He did Everloving, If Things Were Perfect
(After walking home in NYC @ 4a, and "When I got home, I wrote this song"),
Bodyrock (after playing the original Led Zeppelin riff he first used.. "But, I
decided not to be a plagiarist"), Honey ("I'm not the best judge, but I think
this song is... sexy?"), Troubles with God, Run On, Go, the James Bond theme,
Feeling So Real, and two older songs. For the Play songs, he sang with the
tracks, except for Run On, in which there was no vocal for him to sing with, so
he sang it by himself. He did Feeling So Real in folk version and then
hyper-active (I think that was Feeling so Real...). And as for the two older
songs, unfortunately I don't know the names. He said that if he had "any
shame" he wouldn't perform them because they were written 7-8 years ago, but
that they are fun to do so he did them anyway.
There were two encores, I think the first was the Feeling so Real set and the
second was his "hello, I am shirtless Moby" song.. the "fastest song ever"..
sorry, I don't know the name of that one either. If anyone knows the names of
the songs that I don't, please do tell me. If it helps any, it looks like the
same song he was doing in the picture on the Moby.org mainpage, going by his
expression, angle of shot (because he was standing on this.. what was that?),
and the fact that he's without shirt.
I was hoping he would do South side, but oh well.
All in all the set was a little shorter than I expected. I'm pretty sure it
came in under 2 hours, close to 1hr 30, but I'm not completely sure.
I had a blast and want to go to the show in Sheffield or Leeds, but am not sure
if I will be able to, because I wouldn't be brave enough to try and do it on my
own (as an American in England).
Allright, hope that helped some. If anyone has any questions, ask away. They
may bring back some memories of the show that I forgot to write down.
Cheers,
Elissa

Ok, so there is this club in Newcastle called Cuba Cuba that does a rock
night on Friday nights which I go to. But the Dj, formally from the
Mayfair, refuses to play Moby's rock stuff. he doesn't believe moby does
anything but dance. Me and Kim ( who you obviusly don't know) have tried
him, he just says shit like
" We don't play that kind of thing here"
And he really pisses me off, Little Geff is his name. Somehow I'm gonna
make him play Moby, have to convince him Moby actually does f*cking good
rock stuff. Somehow.

Subject: (mobility) Lomax recordings
It is frequently publicized that the recordings of Alan Lomax, which
Moby sampled for some of his recent releases, were made in the early
1930s. I am fairly certain that they were really recorded in 1959.
You can find source recordings for songs such as "Natural Blues"
(actually "Trouble So Hard", by Vera Hall) on _Sounds of the South_,
a 4CD boxed set released by Atlantic in 1993. The set comes with a
large booklet filled with information and pictures. In the
introduction to this booklet, Alan Lomax writes:
I had been recording in the field for twenty-five years --
beginning with the Edison cylinder machine and every few years
moving on to a better device -- before stereo came along. After
years of work in Europe during the '50s I returned to America to
find the folk song revival, that I had earlier helped to launch,
in full swing. Where Burl and Pete and Woody and Leadbelly and
a few others had held sway, now there were hundreds of singers
and scores of groups. Some of the young folkniks, who dominated
the New York scene, asserted that there was more folk music in
Washington Square on Sunday afternoon than there was in all rural
America. Apparently, it made them feel like heroes to believe
that they were keeping a dying tradition alive. The idea that
these nice young people, who were only just beginning to learn
how to play and sing in a good style, might replace the glories
of the real thing, frankly, horrified me. I resolved to prove
them wrong. Thus in the summer of 1959, supported by Nesuhi and
Ahmet Ertegun of Atlantic Records, I returned to my natie South,
where I had worked before, to record the singers of mountain,
bayou, prison and cotton patch with state-of the art equipment.
In a two-month tour, which took me from Virginia through
the Middle South to the Ozarks, into the Mississippi Delta and
back to the Georgia Sea Islands, I found proof that the South
still held a rich heritage of fascinating and ripened styles.
Ancient songs lived on and new songs were being composed. Three
instruments, previously unrecorded, were discovered -- the
mouthblow, the cane fife and the primitive panpipe. After these
stereo recordings appeared in 1961, there was no more talk about
the dominance of Washington Square. In fact, many of the most
devoted fans went into the field to do their own recordings.
The material for these four discs was culled out of eighty
hours of field tapes. The set reflects, to some extent, what the
Erteguns felt might best reach their pop audience. Yet some of
the songways date back to ancient European or African origins.
Others were created in the pioneer period. Still others were
born yesterday. The whole collection is a testament to the
creativity of the South, where country folk -- people of African
and British descent -- continue to shape the deep songs of this
country.

Anyways, I think this proves the origin of these recordings. If you
are interested in folk music, church spirituals, old bluegrass, the
roots of the blues, or just what Moby samples, you should check out
this compilation. It isn't cheap, but it's loaded with hours of
interesting music. From 1959! :)

right, i saw billboard and aparently VH1ne has been
playing NB more than MTV!!!! figures. VH1ne is
actually more edgier and subversive than MTV now. MTV
would not be giving Johnny Rotten his own show
nowadays. thats really something to think about. i saw
an article about that on the net somewhere, how Vh1ne
is better than MTV now....
anyway, also since Play hit the top 100 you might
wanna check out Billboard a few weeks from now,
becuase whenever they annoint an artist "Heatseeker
Impact" the issue after they hit the top 100 they have
a big article about them, so that might be nice to see
;)
anyway, also i saw NB on Vh1ne on sum show "Needle
Drop" or sumthin. they play like 30irty seconds of a
video and then play something else. like its "in the
mix" or something. like mixing Jennifer Lopez with
Sting is hip or cutting edge or something. ok maybe
theyre not THAT edgy. but hey, they played Moby. so
thats nice.
keep votin on TRL! btw, i never watch that show, at
least not if i can help it, has moby actually been
mentioned or anything? yeah right....

Mobiles,
This chat was news to me too. Kinda weird...I have no control or knowledge of
what gets set up in London and vice-versa. Hope those of you that knew about it
dug it...
Just so you know, we're working on a live AOL chat w/ Moby here in the US
sometime around the Grammy awards. Hopefully this will get firmed up for Monday,
Feb. 21 at 9pm EST. Again, I make NO guarantees and these things are harder to
schedule than you would think. This is jut a heads-up so Elie and me can stay on
speaking terms...
Oh by the way, "PLAY" shipped GOLD yesterday! This means that we have taken over
500,000 orders on the album. It's quite a thrill for us...big thanks to all of
you.
Good weekends all,
