Hi there, I'm going to one of the shows soon, and I'm taking a couple
friends who believe it or not don't know Moby! Anyway I was hoping somebody
has some idea of what he will be playing so I can give my friends a taste of
what to look forward too.

Subject: (mobility) Moby's Dream Gig
Sonicnet article on MOBY - January 21,2000
Moby Lands Dream Gig With Filmmaker John Waters
Shy electronica-rocker gets two Grammy nominations and a movie job.
Senior Writer Gil Kaufman reports:
Moby's career has blasted off into the stratosphere since the release in
June of the critically acclaimed Play.
Besides garnering a pair of Grammy nominations, Moby's latest album has
taken the shy electronica-rocker places he said he never thought he'd be.
He's been able to rub elbows with Michael Jackson and Guns N' Roses leader
Axl Rose and remix their work ù and has landed a dream gig: the chance to
score a film for trash-cinema king John Waters.
"I sort of have a moratorium on outside projects," Moby (born Richard Hall)
said. "But John Waters is a huge, huge hero." Moby is scoring Waters'
upcoming film, "Cecil B. Demented" (late summer), which stars Stephen Dorff
("Blade"), Melanie Griffith ("Crazy in Alabama") and frequent Waters stock
player and talk-show host Ricki Lake.
"If someone likes a record I made, I almost feel like I owe them something.
... Like I should take them out shoe shopping, or clean their bathroom or
something." ù Moby, electronica artist
"It's very funny, it's wonderful," Moby, 34, said of the movie, which
focuses on an unhinged indie-film director (Dorff) and his group of teen
acolytes, who kidnap a Hollywood starlet (Griffith).
Moby ù who likened the excitement he felt working with Waters to his feeling
during a phone conversation a few years ago with his musical hero,
electronic-music composer Brian Eno ù said he wasn't sure yet if he'd be
writing solely score pieces or some vocal tracks, as well.
Moby's two Grammy nominations for Play are for Best Alternative Music
Performance and Best Rock Instrumental Performance. His competition in the
Alternative category includes mainstays Tori Amos and Beck as well as
electronica peer Fatboy Slim and industrial rockers Nine Inch Nails.
But the bald singer/programmer ù who took his name from Moby Dick, the white
whale created by author Herman Melville, whom Moby claims as an ancestor ù
faces a more unusual field of competitors in the Instrumental category,
where his hip-hop-influenced track "Bodyrock" (RealAudio excerpt) is up
against songs by punk-rockers Green Day and guitar gods Jeff Beck, Steve Vai
and Santana, featuring Eric Clapton.
"I felt like someone had made a mistake," Moby said of his two nominations.
"It's the sort of thing that's supposed to happen to other musicians, not
me. I really felt like someone had made a clerical error" (RealAudio excerpt
of interview).
Best known for electronica, Moby made a foray into guitar-rock on his 1997
album Animal Rights. Moby said he was not a fan of any of the guitarists he
was facing ù he prefers more renegade players, such as former Black Flag
guitarist Greg Ginn and former Television guitarist Tom Verlaine ù and he
was surprised to be in their company.
Moby said he likes the music he makes, but he never expects others to like
it. He's humbled by the accolades and attention Play has received, he said.
"If someone likes a record I made, I almost feel like I owe them something,"
Moby said. "Like a debt, like I should take them out shoe-shopping, or clean
their bathroom or something."
The 18-track Play mixes some of Moby's traditional soaring
ambient/electronica sounds with a suite of six songs that sample a cappella
music from a pair of albums by folk archivist Alan Lomax. Moby said he found
those recordings on a four-CD set, Sounds of the South, at his local record
store. He was so drawn to the yearning in the singers' voices that he
quickly set to work in his home studio building atmospheric blues-soul
tracks around them.
Lomax's daughter, Anna Chairetakis, said she was sure her father, who has
been too ill to work for the past several years, would be happy that Moby is
helping a new audience discover artists such as former Sunday school teacher
Vera Ward Hall, whose longing voice can be heard on the techno-gospel track
"Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad" (RealAudio excerpt).
"I'm glad, and I'm sure Alan would also be glad, that people are finding
these songs and that these recordings are inspiring a new source of
creativity and new musical ideas," said Chairetakis, who is an executive
producer of the 100-CD Alan Lomax Collection series on Rounder Records.
"It's also a very good thing that the artists' heirs receive royalties and
licensing fees," Chairetakis said, echoing what she said was one of her
father's longtime goals.
The album also features samples of such blues and gospel greats as Bessie
Jones, who can be heard on the album's propulsive lead-off track, "Honey"
(RealAudio excerpt).
In addition to a possible trip to the Grammys on Feb. 23, Moby said most of
his year will be taken up with his ongoing tour in support of Play.

There is a group of mobility members looking to trade MP3s, and we're
looking for space to host an FTP site. If you can help, please let me know.
If you want MP3 files, everybody will be welcome to use the site once it's
available. (assuming we can find some space to make this a reality) I hope
to encode the Brotherhood 12" for the FTP as well as other goodies like live
performances and some obscure vinyl only remixes, like Moby's (A Capella)
remix of Brian Eno's "Fractal Zoom." Please help if you can!

I have over 2 gigs of space on this ftp site:
129.93.212.27
log in anonymously and go to the "Moby" directory.
Here you can upload to any directory, I have already posted 2 mp3s that I
had as well as some text and graphic files from a long time ago.
Any one can access and d/l the files as well as upload, up to 5 users at a
time and there is no ratio, please make as many uploads as you wish--and for
any trolls I have shut off "delete" access, so you can't erase other's hard
work.
Have loads of fun with your loads.

Subject: (mobility) going to the movies...
I read this little article in the Oor magazine:
"Electro-punker Moby's going to write some music for the new John Waters
film "Cecil B. Demented". Waters is one of Moby's most favourite directors.
Moby has also written some songs for The Beach, the new Leonardo DiCaprio
film and for new films by Madonna and Julia Roberts."
Will these be all new songs? I never go to movies or buy soundtracks, so
I'm not that well informed when it comes to films/soundtracks...

Also, Air's soundtrack for The Virgin Suicides will be released on February
the 28th. There will also be a single from the soundtrack called
"Playground
Love" with vocals by Gordon Tracks. Air's new album is due for September.
I've seen the cover of the soundtrack, WOW!!! You would buy this soundtrack
only for its artwork! Simply beautiful! more info: www.virginsuicides.com

Chris, Thank you!!! I'll be making MP3s over the weekend, so there should be
some great stuff there by Monday afternoon, if I get my technical problems
worked out...
Does anybody have suggestions about what FTP program to use on a local area
network? I viewed the FTP directory from my browser successfully, but
CuteFTP won't connect to it. It seems to expect me to use an ISP, and did
not let me choose LAN. I don't know if that's the problem or what...
