quite simply: sales do not reflect the quality of music. reviews do not
reflect the quality of music. videos do not reflect the quality of music.
fans do not reflect the quality of music. airplay does not reflect the
quality of music.
music is a largely personal thing, but there are some fundimentals behind it.
one of my roommates is a big fan of rap/hiphop, and while i may not
personally enjoy the genre too much (though there are certain performers who
strike my fancy - the roots, the beastie boys, diggable planets, p.m. dawn,
eminem, dr. dre for example), i can listen to his cds and tell that a lot of
work was put into them. i can see the complexity behind the sound of a lot of
what he listens to, the thought behind the lyrics, the talent these people
have, regardless of whether or not it is my personal cup of tea. this is how
music reviews should be written. based on the quality of the music, with a
hint of the author's personal reflections, but with his biases well known.
chris is right. many fans of lesser known music, emo kids especially, can be
total idiots. you cited jimmy eat world and this is a wonderful example. the
two albums they have recorded since signing with capitol records are to of
the most awe-inspiring albums i have ever heard, in my personal opinion. and
both are well-produced, musically interesting, complex, well thought out
peices, as well. but many of their fans claimed they "sold out" because they
recorded something that really had nothing to do with their punk backgrounds.
but that's silly. people change and their music changes with them. it's not
punkrock, but does that make clarity any less amazing and touching an album?
moby's animal rights did not follow his typical path. was he "selling out"?
of course not. he was experimenting. trying something differnt. this is what
the best music is all about. post sgt. pepper beatles, the new three-membered
rem, the ever changing aphex twin. musicians change, music evolves. it
happens for all sorts of reasons. "up" was the most beautiful album musically
rem has ever produced, but most people seemed to condemn it because it was
different. why? artists like beck and moby have made careers of doing
something different every album. and if anything, doesn't their ability to
master so many different genres say something about their talent?
so trent reznor did something different. it has been four years. he's likely
to have changed. haven't you changed quite a bit since you first listened to
closer? aren't you a different person with different musical tastes and
different beliefs and different ideologies? then why shouldn't trent be as
well? if the trade magazines are calling it the best record of the year then
it's because of "the way that album is produced is totally mind boggling.
It's layer after layer after layer, and most of the samples he
made himself." as chris said. you may not like it. but it's sad if you cannot
appreciate it.
i'm not much of a NIN fan, but i have a couple of trent's cds because indeed
they are amazingly produced peices of work. and i will more than liekly pick
up the fragile eventually, and it will be largely due to the many reviews and
number one listings. and while i may not like it, i'm certain that i'll at
least be engaged by an interesting peice of art for a couple of hours.

Subject: (mobility) IMPORTANT: NATURAL BLUES
okay folks, you are not even going to believe this,
but i swear its true. i was listening to the Electro
Circus on 104 last nite, which is supposed to be from
10-2 but he ALWAYS goes later than that now (he was on
til 6 last week) so he went til 4 today. and hes
playin all cool shit, bla bla bla. then i wake up
sometime after 4 (i mean obviously i fall asleep
sometimes during it, i can never stay up the whole
time) and lo and behold, what is on the radio but a
slightly edited "Natural Blues." i'm thinkin its still
the electro circus, but he actually played it at like
11:30 or so, and anyway it was about 4:20 on my alarm
clock radio, which is about 15 or so minutes ahead of
time (so i can try and get up earlier, not that it
werks). but anyway i was wondering, is this for real?
the next song they played was Blink 182, note the HUGE
GAP between songs, they were definitely not mixed
together, so i guess there you
go............................................................................................................
NATURAL BLUES IS IN ROTATION AT RADIO
104!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
a DOUBLE SHOCK to us because 1) we havent heard about
any radio edit promos about NB have we? and 2) 104
never plays this damn shit anyway, they never played
Bodyrock in rotation either.
wow. anybody heard about promos? damn, frickin 104 is
playing it in December 99, and it isnt set to be
released in the UK til feb 2000. is it gonna be
released here too?
anyway i also got an issue of MUZIK the one with
faithless on the cover (the shop had had it for a few
months, they were desperatly ttryin to get rid of it i
guess) and it said a few interesting things. it
reviewd WDMH? and Muzik gave it 3 stars and guest
reviewer Graham Gold (who?) gave it 4 stars, for some
certain mix..... i forgot which. but hes relieved that
the ATB mix sounds not similar to 9PM, other wise hed
have smashed it into 10 million pieces. no twangy
guitar thingy in it.
also, it has the playlist for a Paul Oakenfold
Essential Mix, and it lists a Moby song called "Your
Side" and its on a white label. now theres no way to
get any more information about this, so if anybody
ever meets Paul Oakenfold, try and ask him about this
ok?
also, thers this thing about Hybrid, and theres also a
little interview with Julee Cruise, and when asked
what shes been up to all this time it says shes been
working with MOBY! but i guess theyre trying to say
that isnt coming out or something, the stuff she did
with Hybrid is tho. theres also a track by Hybrid on
the enclosed cd, its kinda nice, and Julee sings on
it, kinda orchestral-trancey or whutevr. Hybrid are
kinda huge in the UK right? over here theyre best
known if at all for a bootleg remix of the extra track
on the Alanis Morisette cd "Jagged Little Pill".
well anyway if anybody meets MOBY, ask him about these
rumors that hes recorded with Julee Cruise ok? we know
that hes a fan, of course.
okay bye! i had this really cool quote to say here but
i forgot it, all i remembered was that it was really
cool.... i think it was something to do with raver
nostalgia, kinda like "ardkor u know the score" or
sumthin.....nevermind....

this one ;)
7-Blur:13
8-Orbital:Middle Of Nowhere
9-Luscious Jackson:Electric honey
10-Indigo Girls:Come On now Social
11-Primus: Antipop (biggest surprise of the year, i
think, what with Fred Durst and Matt Stone involved)
12-Lords Of Acid: Expand Your Head
13-Ash: Nu Clear Sounds
14-Verbena: Into The Pink (produced by Dave Grohl, so
it has that classic Nirvana/Foo sound to it, plus they
got a female singer so it sounds like the Pixies!
rock)
15-Skunk Anansie: Post Orgasmic Chill
16 (tie):Prince Paul: Prince Among Thieves AND
Handsome Boy Modeling School (i am a male model! not a
male prostitute! MODELING SUCKS! ;)
17-Sasha And Digweed: Northern Exposure 3: Expeditions
(mix cd of the year, my other faves were both Thievery
Corporation's and Kid Loco's DJ Kicks cds)
18-Boom Boom Satellites: Out Loud (thanks Kees!)

Herbaliser, Tone Matrix, etc.
WORST ALBUMS (remember, all my negative comments here
are MY OPINION, you dont have to agree):
Basement Jaxx: Remedy (god do these guys suck!)
Death In Vegas: Contino Sessions (i loved the first
album by them, but whats up with this "we're not
techno, we're a 'psychadelic' rock band" bullshit?)
Nine inch Nails:Fragile (pure boredom, and its not
that its that terrible, its just that all these damn
critics think Trent is the greatest thing since
macaroni and cheese..... there are many more
underground folks doing things way better and more
innovative than this guy is!)
REISSUES/COMPILATIONS/ETC
1-Beatles: Yellow Submarine
2-Beasties: Sounds Of Science
3-Gang Starr: Full Clip
4-Simpsons: Go Simpsonic
5-V/A:Everything Is Nice (matador records 3cd
anthology, only costs like 12 bucks and theres lots
of good stuff, so buy it!)
great, and remember, THIS IS ALL MY OPINION, IF YOU
DONT AGREE THEN FINE, but dont come yelling to me
"Nine Inch Nails rule! you suck bastard!" or anything
if you happen to disagree, ok? we are all entitled to
our opinions. you can always give me your list.
right, hope nobody is offended there, i guess i should
skee daddle, ok bye now!
What you talkin bout, everyone!

hey i was surchin roun dEBAY and i found a copy of the
Sasha and Digweed "Renaisance" 3 cd mix from 94, and
they said Moby was on it. not whcih trak tho, and damn
if i can find which one is. anyone know? this is
interesting, Sasha and Digwweed are like a far cry
from Moby now. back then all these techno groups/djs
were all like in the same boat, now everyone is there
own genre. weird.
i also so on ebay some old hardcore compilation with
Vatican Commandoes on it. the giy said "including some
guy who now is called MOBY i guess, i dont know i
still listen to the Ramones and Minor Threat i guess i
havent progressed ;)
but i thought the only VC song moby was on was the
"Hit Squad For God" single (not that i've heard that
or anything) oh well maybe that songs on there. i know
some of you have heard the Pork Guys but has ne1 here
heard Vatican Commandoes "Hit Squad For God"?
moby should do like a "Some Old Bullshit" type thing,
all old hc stuff! then agian, most of that stuff he
did wasnt even recorded i think....
hmmmm also i went to the raddio 104 home page, and
they actually have "the playlist" posted (altho it
hasnt been updated in a while, i could tell cuz
"Nookie" is the only Limp Bizkit song listed there)
and "Bodyrock" is on there it turns out. so is BIS and
GUIDED BY VOICES for some reason!!! ha!!!!! damn, i
guess they havent been playing that. im kinda pissed,
Pyke that damn night dj was doing the CAGE MATCH last
night, and he was playing Splashdown "Ironspy" which
rocked cuz that song is cool, and then the cd starts
skipping which is bad enuff, then he yanks it off and
is like "im sorry but that really sucked. ive heard
cows mating and it sounded better than that" and im
like YOU SUCK DAMMIT! yeah, and Limp Bizkit is better
than that? fuck you!!!!!!
right, im ouuta here. Drive milk and drink slow. PHIZZO

greetings:
at the request of the kind and informative email i received after signing
up to mobility, these are my relevant vitals:
name: jackie killian
loc: nj, usa
age: 20
moby and related sounds: 'play'--a recent acquisition that i have fallen
deeply in love w/
first acquaintance w/ moby: probably '96.. or whenever he did that james bond
theme (please feel free to correct me)--i knew someone who played horns and i
knew he did experiments in electronic--but wasn't aware of the full range of
his talents. i am better educated now. but most recently, i caught a show of
his in manchester, uk and was destined to a life of devotion.
other musical interests: primarily ska/rocksteady, dub, dancehall, skin
reggae (organ), old hc, some punk/oi, d-n-b/house (i love lionrock)/trance,
and basement jaxx (a whole category unto themselves).
hope this is helpful,
jackie
ps-my first question: any moby shows or dj happenings in nyc area prior to
the vancouver gig or miami for 12/31 (if i'm not mistaken)? i'd love to catch
another show before going back to school
