well, i just joined a gew days ago, though i've been an avid listener for
some time now...

a few quick things...

who cares about sales? i came to the realization a long time ago that there
is no better indicator of a good record than mediocre sales. but it doesn't
matter. good musicians do not make music in order to make money. and it
generally shows. in the case of moby, and most other underexposed,
underappreciated musicians, it doesn't matter how much they sell, because
it's not a concern. the only concern with true art is the art. and good music
certainly is art.

i believe there's been some talk of this year's best albums (thus far, of
course)... and i'll go-ahead and throw in my picks...

in no particular order:

fountains of wayne - utopia parkway
jimmy eat world - clarity
the get up kids - red letter day
the promise ring - very emergency
guided by voices - do the collapse

i am writing on behalf of a friend who is unfamiliar with Moby
but who is very interested in his expressions about veganism.

i wondered if anyone might be able to offer information about Maureen
Kennedy Salaman.  she is an internationally recognised biochemist who
believes that the proper intake of vitamins and minerals will help the body
heal itself of disease.   her best known book is called All Your Health
Questions Answered Naturally.

my friend, sue, has a polyneuropathy which is a result of an
immunodeficiency similar to AIDS.  in some cases it can lead to fataly.  it
is not a popular illness which helps explain why there is
not a lot of research about it.  in addition to sue's regular medical
treatment (which intends to cure the symptoms of her neuropathy) she is
beginning to take a full amount of vitamins and minerals every day -
virtually flushing her system - so that the body may begin to heal itself of
the immunodeficiency.  (the minerals are bought in a general nutrition store
and taken in liquid form.)  as well she will move toward veganism and eat
organically (thereby trying to avoid chemicals and pesticides.)

one other thing for the list...

some of the things that i do in my professional life(not to mention
my personal life) end up being things that with hindsight i judge
as mistakes.
examples:
1-re-recording 'that's when i reach for my revolver' as 'that's when
i realize it's over'.  this was a mistake.  i regret it now.  luckily
the original version lives on while the sanitized version has been
consigned to the dust-bin of history.
2-wearing a body-stocking in the 'move' video.  ugh.
3-throwing the occasional tantrum on stage when things don't go well.
etc.
hopefully we learn from our mistakes?  it's not for arbitrary
reasons that i call myself the little idiot.  i'm little and i'm
an idiot:)
so if i do something that seems weird or distasteful, there's a good
chance that with hindsight i'll see it that way as well.

hey
i was just perusing the 'mobility' archives and i thought that
i'd answer some questions...

1-i do not have a girlfriend.  where did this rumour come from?

2-i'm not involved in making porno movies.  my friend paul made
a movie called 'porno' and i helped to pay for it.  it's a comedy
set in a sex-shop on christmas eve and it's kind hearted and there's
no sex in it.  two people do kiss for about 5 seconds, though...

3-i did a photo shoot for calvin klein, yes, it's true.  i did it
cos some of my other musician friends were doing it(john spencer, shirley
manson), and so that i could give the fee($5,000) and the clothes($5,000
worth) to homeless charities.

4-the whole sell-out issue...the marriage of art and commerce is a
complicated thing.  i don't want to 'sell-out', but i do want to
keep the record company happy so that i can continue to make
records.  a lot of the stuff that i do(mtv, etc) i do to reach more
people, and because it's interesting.  the marriage of art & commerce
was certainly at it's most intersting at the video music awards...

i guess that's it..  i'm heading to florida now to play in the hurricane.
then on to atlanta and charlotte(really.  i'm not making this up.  maybe
the hurricane is a fan...ha. ha.)

lemme catch my breath and then tell you about one of the oddest days of
my life.  It all started when the girl who bought my moby ticket for me
and was supposed to go to the show with me disappeared off the face of
the planet.  Why would anyone care? because she had my ticket, thats
why!  After exhausting close to 72 hours on trying to locate her, i
remembered a friend of a friend had extra tix and was goin to the show,
but one prob, I didn't have his number.  So after spending from 10am to
5pm attempting to call people who might know his number to no success i
decided I would go get my own ticket at the local alternative record
store.  Only problem, they had no tix.  so i come back home(now 5:40pm,
doors are at 7 and the venue is a good 40 mins away in no traffic) call
my friend one more time, get her roommate who thank god founf her phone
book and gave me the number, i call, secure two tix, invite my friend
along and the three of us(me, my friend and the guy with the tix) hop in
my car at 7pm and head west.
I should mention that in between all this i was breaking up with my
girlfriend today(that was fun), so going to the show became more than
just wanting to see moby but a need to distract myself from the pain.

anyway, while waiting for boom boom satellites(who never showed) we were
talking about old rock and started talkin bout Sabbath and "paranoid" in
particular, and lo and behold, Moby played paranoid.  At the beginning
of the show me and my friend yelled out "play some skynyrd" and
"freebird" which....moby played.  Then we were talking about smog and
fog and i mentioned how we never get fogged in in the neighborhood we
live in which used to happen very often but now never did....so of
course we drove home through thick fog.  Then we couldn't get in to my
friends gated community cuz some one had broken the keypad, so we had to
hot wire it to get him home.

But anyway back to Moby, awesome show, I was not disappointed in anyway
other than the fact he didn't play "south side" which is one of my
faves.

let me just say, i've never been so exhausted after a show like this
before.  I know I was dancing all show long but my legs were giving out
on me half way through the set.  Powerful powerful stuff.  After the
show the damn security threw me out and wouldn't let me talk to Moby who
was five feet away, but Moby stopped on his way out and I asked him
about Voodoo Child and he said he didn't see a new voodoo child album
for a long time(he's in a different place right now).  He also signed
three album covers and my setlist for me and then i go him to sign my
drivers license. =)  don't ask.

i'm glad you got to go. we were a few minutes late, but judging by your
setlist, we got there by the 1st or 2nd song. not bad, considering i had no
idea where i was going when i left the house and thot boom boom would still
be playing by the time i got there.
at any rate, during i guess Perfect was when he busted into a Public Enemy
rap, but now i can't remember what it was to save my sorry ass.
let's see, mostly all moby had to say on stage was "thank you. thank you"
and then apologize for his appearance. he wore a dingy white wife-beater
Tshirt and black trousers, which he insisted were too large. and i'm always
glad to see there's a market for old guys with little hair.
i liked the setup at jannus, since you walk in and you're at the stage. i
heard your friend holler for skynyrd and was shocked as all getout  when he
started playing it. didn't someone scream for bon jovi?
we got our tickets at the gate. there was no line to speak of, which was a
relief.
i thnk my friend who went was still unsure. he doesn't usually do anything
fun but thanked me probly a half-dozen times on the way home. "This was a
good idea. i'm glad we went. blah blah blah"
a friend in dallas didn't go, making his excuse that it was at lizard
lounge, plus it was dallas in august, which means about 150 degrees.
i'm off. i hope everyone else gets to see him when he comes through your
burgs.

Since I had some time, I'd thought I'd chime in on this...even though it may
be an old topic to some of you all...sorry..

This summer I had some luck and converted 3 people to Moby...2 by taking
them to a concert and the other one by playing PLAY at closing at my place
of employment. About a year ago one of my best friends bought a couple
singles because I talked about moby often and now he is a fan. Its pretty
cool...but I still cannot reach some people. I've found that many people I
know really like his punk stuff. But anyway...if you play the songs enough
around other people...it will slowly happen :-).

On other moby news: This is quite late...but I was fortunate enough to catch
moby in Denver last month. After being a fan for about 1/4 of my life (i am
19) I was pretty estatic to see him. The show was incredible...and if I
could describe it I would...but I am not feeling that descriptive right now.
But the DJ's before the show pretty much sucked (we did not get Boom Boom,
just some local dj's). ANd the concert was a reunion for me...saw two
friends I had not seen in ages. But anyway. Moby: Thanks a lot for making
some great music and putting on a great show.

Another way to get people into moby...if you are at college or in a town
with a community radio station get invovled. I know many of the people on
the list do this. Just play moby all the time. I play him at least twice a
show. I actually got a request for Honey one time (I go to a school where
reggae and folk/bluegrass are the music genres of choice, so I was shocked).

ST. PETERSBURG On disc, Moby refuses to restrict himself to any one
genre. Thursday night at Jannus Landing, he managed to break down, or
ignore, a few barriers live as well.
The hyperactive beats and ecstatic feel of Moby's more frenzied dance
tracks wouldn't be out of place at a rave. A crowd of only 561 meant
plenty of room for dancing as well.
But the performer (born Richard Melville Hall) and his three-
piece band had no qualms about slamming through remakes of rock numbers
such as Black Sabbath's ''Paranoid'' or Mission of Burma's ''That's When
I Reach for My Revolver.'' A half-baked take on Lynyrd Skynyrd's ''Free
Bird'' led off the encore.
The musical focus was on Moby's most recent album, ''Play.'' Key tracks
from that album feature samples of black gospel singers over
computerized dance beats. It's a mixture that could be garish (or
sacrilegious) in the wrong hands.
But on tracks such as ''Why Does My Heart Feel so Bad?,'' Moby achieves
something that is both painfully beautiful and transcendent. Watching
the slight performer on stage as the prerecorded voices of the Shining
Light Gospel Choir boomed behind him gave an added poignancy to one of
the evening's highlights.
Other numbers, such as ''Bodyrock,'' ''Go'' and a sound thrashing of
Monty Norman's ''James Bond Theme'' were pure hedonistic fun. And the
tune Moby introduced as a ''very beautiful disco song,'' ''Feeling So
Real,'' was an explosion of joyous noise.
Moby, given to lengthy essays expounding his political, spiritual and
social views in his albums' liner notes, proved a humble, gracious and
humorous stage presence. He also indulged in some rock icon poses on the
final number, pumping his fists in the hair and then standing atop a
keyboard as strobe lights flashed around him.
Scheduled opening act Boom Boom Satellites was an unannounced no-show.
It's a shame the headliner didn't compensate with a longer set.
