Yeah; it's a cover.
If you don't want to pick up MOBs album you can find it on DIY: Boston Punk,
and Too Cool For School. The latter is actually a really decent compilation
with some good tracks by Material Issue and some remixes by DJ Spooky & Sub
Dub....

There was an internal contest at the record company to provide an amicable
lyric change to the song. The Chihuahua one was his favorite because it was
funny, but it was never actually recorded...

I just saw a trailer on TV for Species II. The background music was
none other than Moby's "Oil 1". I wonder why the same songs can and
do get used over and over again in different movies (like the track
"Shining", and now "Oil 1"). I wonder if the song is just in the
trailer, or if it is actually in the movie...

i really think james bond shoulda been a hit. yeah, i was pissed that
elektra didn't promote it. i heard it was to be released here in u.s.
but they scrapped releasing the single here 4 sum reason. why do major
labels hate releasing singles? the world may never know...i'm still
mad that mtv didn't put the video into rotation even though hes not
popular, they are pretty good at doing things like that...if youve
watched it lately, theyve been playing the new roni size video, and
fatboy slim's video, adn if it werent for mtv playing block rockin
beats, dig yr own hole wouldnt have hit #14 on the billboard charts,
and it probably wouldnt have won a grammy (hee hee, i'm still
surprisedd about that...)
of course if it werent 4 mtv, hanson would still be no one,
gaaaaaaaag...well, if moby was that big i wouldnt mind
because...um...ah....well, he's just so talented....
actually, i heard j.b. on kiss 95.7 (pop station) once, they played it
on their sat. nite dance party...they also played "the box" once,
which i was reeal surprised about...
i really think that pop stations are trying to prevent the fabled
"electronica breakthrough" that record labels predicted all last year
(i think i saw a 97-year-in-review article once called
"electronica--what happened?")...i mean, pop stations rarely play an
instrumental song, besides as background music...since most electronic
music is w/o words, that prevents the song being played on the
air...why is that so? another never-to-be-answered-question...
i really thought "You're Not Alone" by olive was going to be the song
to break electronic music here (or at least trip-hop) because that
song is just so emotional and the music is good too. The second i
heard it i knew it would be big. Of course mtv tried to like it but
the general public hated it, so it disapeared. (well the vid sucked
anyway). i have heard it on pop radio, and rick dees and casey kasem
have played it, but it didn't go far...(maybe if they played tha ganja
kru mix people would've listened...heh heh heh....)
whatever. who cares. most of that had nothin to do w/moby neway. sorry
that topic was old i get the digest.
i heard the blur remix, real good. Maybe i'll get the m.o.r. import
single. (blur..there's another band who should be sick-huge here...)
oh, my page has just been updated...if you have any desert island
discs(not just moby) or movies (NOT titanic, i'm sick of it, everwhere
you look on tv its titanic, titanic, titanic, titanic, AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!)
just tell me, and email me some good links too...

i'm going to update my sig soon, my current one is getting boring, no?

Mtv played it a few times the first two weeks after release. But didn't put
it into high rotation because Elektra was not going to release a commercial
single or promote it to top 40. Major labels don't have anything against
releasing singles. I see hundreds everytime I go to any music store.
Elektra, however, under Sylvia Rhone's leadership have sank more careers and
left more artists floundering for sales and airplay.
Motley Crue's new reunion project was expected to do over 2,000,000 units,
but has barely peaked at 250,000 due to poor promotion. And if elektra
couldn't capitalize on the whole Pamela Anderson/Tommy Lee video thing then
they must truly be incompetent.

Hey all--
On a completely different note from any thread currently happening, I saw
Pigface play earlier this evening here in St. Louis. Pigface, for those
of you who don't know, is the pet project of Martin Adkins (sp?), of KMFDM
fame. Reason why I bring this up is that the show was both the closest to
metal and the closest to a "dance" show I've ever been to. it was
odd...and despite going with barely any knowledge of the group, I enjoyed
myself thoroughly. Now if only Moby would come here once....
Oh yeah, and the radio station I work for (KWUR, in St. Louis) got the new
Playboy, for some strange reason. So I have indeed seen Moby in all his
glory (well, most of it) sandwiched between naked womyn. Scary.

my feelings on this is that moby doesn't make groundbreaking
electronic music anymore. the stuff he makes these days
that is worthwhile is his more ambient/theatrical material like
"the end of everything" and "little idiot". i see these songs
as being the Adult Contemporary of late 90s electronic music.
they don't appeal to most people just getting into the chemical
brothers or whoever, and it's that audience that k-tel is
marketing for. if it were a compilation of the most important
pieces of electronic music from the 90s, then i think that
moby absolutely MUST be on it....of course, we're talking k-tel
here, so even if they would do a comp like that, the only
track they'd consider would be "go".
so what do you gals and guys think? what track(s) by moby
have been most IMPORTANT to electronic music of this decade?
sicerely,

Probably licensing. They probably didn't have enough green resource or
influential grip to attain a gem so fine as a Moby song. Or maybe they're
just dumb.

Now you know that's a rather difficult question to answer. I wouldn't know
whre to start or finish, and I listen to what I like but realistically I
don't have a broad perspective on music. I coulnd't say what was important
in the context of "music in the 90's" I don't know why it would be because I
don't always notice what I'm listening to is 'landmark'. With this question
you are inviting a whole slew of essays, and I applaud you for it. Start
