Hello one and one all, I am here in my pseudodefense. I don't think the
size of one's CD collection of a particular artist matters either. It just
depends on how you feel about the music when you HEAR it. If you taped a
song you love off the radio and play that tape over and over and OVER and
OVER again, but don't buy the cd, that doesn't mean you don't like the song.
I know lots of people who are fans of bands but don't own any of their cd's.
I just wanted a general feel for the waters, just bcause I was curious.
Incidentally, I only have 2 Trophy releases, but am looking for the rest...
Anyone? Once again, how many cd's you own of a certain artist does not
translate into how much you like that artist, in my opinion. Well, see you
later. RRR

This is some old news that my sister found on the web, and I don't remember
reading about on the list:
"(9/9/97) - Shock-rocker Marilyn Manson and electronic guru Moby were the
key note speakers at the 1997 CMJ Music Marathon, the music industry
conference held by college radio trade mag College Media Journal in New York
last week. First Moby stepped up to the podium before an audience of music
biz folks, college students and rock journalists. Moby spoke out about the
lack of courage in contemporary music, citing the Wallflowers as an example
of sounding like they were "on Prozac," though he took some flack from the
audience for his own lack of courage, regarding his alteration of the lyrics
to his single "That's When I Reach for My Revolver" in order to get on MTV.
Moby admitted that his decision was also criticized by Mission Of Burma, the
band that originally recorded the song. Next up was Marilyn Manson who, in
his typical fashion, started off by boldly referring to mankind as "all
monkeys" and saying that "becoming yourself" was a process of
"self-contempt" and "inward dying." This was followed by an interactive
question-and-answer segment that covered such topics as sensationalist press
and protests, Manson's responsibility as role model for young fans, various
Internet rumors and his nihilistic tendencies."

i agree kees, demons is unlike anything else. there is a communication
there that i hear,,,that goes beyond words. i am not certain, but i thik
that demons may be my favorite moby track ever. when i listen to it
alone at night with my headfones on...something cums over me. i wonder
why moby never talks of this song. i get similar messages from several
spring heel jack songs that nobody else seems to understand but me.

My take on the whole "Moby genres"...
I got Animal Rights back in August. I had heard it extensively before
then but hadn't mustered the motivation to buy it. Finally did, and I
loved
everything on it. Decided to get EiW, thought it was kind of cheesy at
first, but soon fell in love with it. Played it in my friend's car
because I
wanted to hear it on his massive subwoofer, and he popped EiW out and
put in
disc 1 of Collected B-Sides & Remixes. It got me much more interested in
Moby's harder-edged, old-school stuff. Got a few MP3's from the
self-titled
on Instinct, thought them hackneyed techno at first, but then I started
to
realize there was quite a bit of unique melody and emotion in it. Right
now
my collection is about 12 CDs and rapidly growing. I'm tracking down the
earlier Voodoo Child stuff (Demons/Horses) in particular.
One interesting consistency in Moby's music is the ties to all of the
various incarnations of Ministry's music. The songs on Moby's debut
(particularly Everything, Electricity and Have You Seen My Baby) have a
mixture of Twitch/Land Of Rape And Honey-era Ministry influence,
especially
from the LoRaH electronic-based tracks. The first thing I thought when I
heard What Love was the blatantly obvious Ministry-punk influence.
Anyone
else notice this tie?

i can't say i've noticed it in any of his early techno stuff....
but the first time i heard "what love" i immediately thought of ministry.
some of ministry's really really really early stuff is even cheesier than
listening to the "everytime you touch me" remix parts...!

Whats up. I have ben listening to Moby for a only a year or two even though I
had heard his music before, only not known it was his. Anyway, I have 17 Moby
CDs now, although some are 2CDs and some are singles, but the main reason I
joined this mailing list is because I want to learn how to get some or the
more rare Moby CDs as Ihave only popular chain music store CDs. Thanks.

There are even more people calling themselves Moby on the net. One
has some kind of web graphics archive, and one makes MOD or other
music tracker files. But there is only one Moby that was originally
named Richard Melville Hall, who lives in New York and makes great
music for us! :)
