hey folks

sorry if this opens up a can o' worms or something,
but i found an interesting article about paul yates in
the fairfield county weekly (local free alternative
weekly paper) yesterday. i guess he lives in stamford
(where i go to school) so he's considered a local
artists :)

anyway, as you could imagine, it mentions moby a few
times.

the paper's website is down now, so i cant just link
the article or anything, so i'll have to type out the
relevant parts.

so basically it talks about his mother, and how he got
into art, and how he was a punk and everything, etc,
and the first time it mentions Moby:

"Yates' first film exploration into surrealism came 15
years ago in _Geranium_. Done almost entirely in black
and white, Geranium features Yates and the nor
world-famous DJ Moby in a series of patched-together
clips. They sit at a bar, alcohol is poured, they are
in a field with one in ghost attire, one is falling
over, one is spitting up liquid, there are legs in a
tree and one is on the ground with a rope pulling the
other down. Behind the dreamlike sequence, music
plays, haunting and eerie behind this rotating, dreary
world. The film clearly grapples with alcoholism, with
despair and with death and with failed hope--all
captured simply in repeating images and objects."

"Yates has managed to step outside his own life just
enough that he can capture its human essence without
losing his emotional attachment. After Yates lost four
friends in three separate drowning incidents in the
early '90s, he incorporated water into his works. A
fast-moving video for Moby entitled "Hymn" shows city
streets and bubbling water rising around the rapidly
twisting DJ. Yates' surrealist senior thesis film
called _Space Water Onion_ involves futuristic
crewmembers trapped on an uninhabited planet. In the
black-and-white film, one member returns acting
strangely and they kill him. The female member awakens
on a spacecraft with the two remaining men, all in
white suits, and they learn that the life-support
system is down. It is filling the ship with water
instead of oxygen and they must resolve themselves to
approaching death. The three dance, bobbing slowly. In
a poignant, beautiful moment, their faces hover above
the water line, serene. Undernearth, subtitles read,
"We have found grace." [i'm assuming that's where the
Moby song "Grace" is played? ;) ] Then, they are
swimming. The film not only allowed Yates to graduate
but also won him awards at the Hamburg Hiroshima Film
Festival and the Onion City Film Festival in Chicago.
As he's placed distance between himself and his past,
Yates has allowed his less serious self to develop.
His close friendship with Moby throughout his turmoil
offered him the opportunity to tour worldwide with the
DJ as his cinematograper. Yates' film for the
documentary _Modulations_, the first definitive
history of electronic music, showed his comfort within
many factions of the cultural underworld.
'The electronic/rave scene was the second-coming of
the punk rock movement,' said Yates. 'No specific
dress code, almost no drugs initially, dancing for
eleven hours...you achieved a different state of
consciousness.'
Even through Moby's sell-out express ride to fame
(licensing all songs on _Play_ for commercial use and
appearing on MTV's _Cribs_), Yates and he remained
close. Moby appears in nearly all of Yates' films and
music ventures.

Then came _Porno_. This is the latest feature-length
film that Yates has written, directed and shot, and,
unlike past projects, it's a comedy. [Huh? Spin
magazine wrote a little blurb about this in 1997 or
so! oh well...] _Porno_ isn't even that heavy on the
nudity. The film is set in a porn store on Christmas
Eve and examines all the characters that pass through
its doors. Porn star Dyanna Lauren, whom Yates is also
documenting, sings in the film with a goofy-looking
Moby playing guitar behind her while wearing two
dildos strapped to his head. Over the year that the
film was shot, however, Moby's fame grew and he wanted
out of the _Clerks_-like comedy, afraid it would
smudge his now sacred-image. Yates balked.
'I said, 'Moby, this film doesn't hurt you. No one's
going to see it anyway. They don't know who you are,
by the way. You're not that famous. No one's going to
think, 'He wears dildos on his head in this comedy,
I'm not going to buy his records.' If anything, it's
going to help you.''
The film was made legally with a producer and, as the
rift between them grew, Yates refused to cut Moby from
_Porno_. At the time, Moby was using the value of
Moby-related items on Ebay as a gauge of his
popularity. Yates sold Moby's eternal soul through the
online auction; bidding started at 5 cents. The
auction closed at $41.
_Porno_ has already been shown to positive reviews at
the Silver Lake Film Festival in Los Angeles and the
former sex high-rise Showworld in Manhattan's former
Times Square. In February, the film will be shown as
part of the Director's View Film Festival in Stamford.
Needless to say, _Porno_ is not going away and Yates
is seeking a distributor. Early in 2002, Yates also
plans to release the music he made two years back with
his punk band, the Pork Guys, featuring Moby on drums
and his friend Tarquin [Katis, of Zambonis and
Philistines Jr. fame] on bass. With songs like
"Seven-Inch Sellout", the album will be called _If You
Don't Masturbate You're An Idiot_. [YES!!! I can not
wait for this :) ] His newest film work runs the gamut
from, as he says, "a dance-song with bizarro finger
puppets set to the original tune "Hey Moby!"
[uh-oh...] to another full-length film, which he
recently dropped off at Miramax called _Ravers_. In
_Ravers_ all the characters take drugs which do not
cause inebriation but, instead, induce multiple
effects like seeing in slow-motion or crossed
sensations (a character might touch something hot, for
instance, and taste something like peaches). Only one
drug, called God, is detrimental. For three days, the
characters are completely high, but they know that in
10 years they will die. Still, they take God."


well, anyway, there ya go. kind of a shame that their
friendship had to dissolve over this dumb movie. I
kinda agree with Paul tho, i mean, nobody's gonna care
about this movie. is anyone gonna care about the Pork
Guys album (which i really really hope actually comes
out)? there's lots of stuff about Moby that most
people don't know, or care about. i've never heard
anyone here talk about the last Philistines Jr album
here, which Moby contributes about 5 seconds of music
to ;)

but anyway, yeah. that's whats up.

this is the most i've posted to Mobility in about 3
years ;)

oi there mobilites,
a couple notes i'd like to make about this (oh stop panicing)...
no need to 'uh-oh' over "hey moby", it's called that 'cause of a sample in
it of someone going "hey moby". there's rumors *cough* that a remix of it
by moby may be getting released, in fact.
and thumbs if the pork guys album finally gets released. check out
oniongod.com's pictures section for the "if you don't nasturbate, you're
an idiot" photobooth sheet.
and porno rocks, and i think it should of had distrobution by last year,
and that would of made much better xmas fare on the indipendant film
channel than a few hours of spalding gray (nothing personal toward's him,
he's just not exactly 'holiday festive' ("peter, yer the spalding gray of
crap!"))
maybe i should wire up the vcr and put geranium up on oniongod.com.
it's fairly cool. we'll see...
and i'll say this fer 'moby vs. paul yates', when moby says "i want my
music online" he apparently doesn't have any legal ground, 'cause he
doesn't seem to own most or all of it, and he doesn't exactly stand up to
his management or anything about the point. that's made running a moby
site a much more painful experience than running a paul yates site lately.
and paul writes warmer emails than moby these days (to me at least).
so, um, yeah, that's my 2 cents, yay paul yates.
and while we're at it, yay paul simpson.

all over:

BT's Los Angeles studio was robbed while he was in
London for the holidays. The perpetrators made off
with not only expensive recording and computer
equipment but also tracks the producer/DJ had recorded
for his upcoming fourth album and follow-up to 2000's
widely acclaimed "Movement in Still Life." Among the
missing material is BT's recent collaboration with
PETER GABRIEL. Any information about the crime should

I wonder where this info originally comes from. the artist featured(and
credited) on the UK-version (which was slightly edited for the US-release)
is Jesus Loves You, Acker Bilk, Fleetwood Mack, Nick Coler, Evil Graham Lee
and Elvis (and of ourse the KLF). A sample which also is featured in Pink
Floyd's "on the run" is in the track Madrudaga Eterna, but should actually
be from an old BBC record (both Pink and KLF stole it from this source).
My theory is that the info on KLF's Chill Out once where mixed up with
another 'Chill Out'-album, and this wrong info still is circulating the net
 (maybe because of the wrong info at allmusic)

BTW: I don't know many of the people mentioned on www.allmusic.com, but I'm
sure that neither Moby, Irresteble Force(mixmaster morris) or Jo Bogart
(technotronic) is featured on the album.  Actually The KLF never worked
with(or sampled) any of these artist on their official releases (they could
be sampled on some af the unreleased chillout-sessions they did with The
Orb, but not as far as I know).

It would appear that allmusic.com has The KLF's _Chill Out_ and that
_Chill Out: The Techno Evolution Continues_ confused.

 From all of my studies on that album, The KLF (Bill & Jimi) worked
alone (with lots of sampled material, of course).

case, moby's up for another grammy.


if Alicia doesn't win best new artist, i think the
entire universe will collapse and blow up. or
something. :rolls eyes:

i'm happy to see Outkast nominated for a lot of
things, esp. album of the year. the geezers (dylan or
u2... yell at me all you want) will win that one, but
it would be nice to see them win it.

i'm trying to look for the entire list but these damn
computers are slow. oh well!

anyway, some news: from nme:


MOBY joined US punk band MISSION OF BURMA onstage at a
show in NEW YORK, an event which the dance star claims
completed a childhood dream.
The group performed two shows (January 12-13) at the
New York Irving Plaza, as part of a short string of
dates that will also include an appearance at the
forthcoming All Tomorrow's Parties festival in the UK
in April.

At the second night (January 13), Moby performed
guitar during an encore of 'All World Cowboy Romance'.
The dance star has been a fan of the group since his
youth, and also paid tribute to the group when he
covered their track 'That's When I Reach For My
Revolver' on his 1996 album 'Animal Rights'.

Writing on his official website, www.moby-online.com,
he compared playing with the band to when he worked
with his other heroes, New Order and David Bowie. He

alright, there's a lucky 13 random questions. now,

mine:
1. well, he's said it would be more "soulful" or
something... so what does this mean, Motown samples?
hmmm. i can't really imagine right now what it would
sound like. it'll probly not be what i expected.

2. it'll be interesting to see if it'll do better than
South Side. i think people like Spin magazine won't
give it as good reviews as last time, there'll be a
little bit of a backlash. i'm sure he'll definitely
come up with something catchy enough to have at least
one hit.

3. well, i guess its not that likely, cause moby seems
to like to work by himself. i probly wouldnt like it
if he did work with them tho.

4. Pork Guys: will this only be available at Yates'
website or something? i kinda doubt an album called If
You Dont Masturbate Yr An Idiot will have wide
distribution, hehe. if i can find it, and the radio
station doesnt get it, i'll definitely buy it. as for
the new Moby, probly wont get it the day it comes out.
unless the first single(s) totally reaffirm(s) my
faith in him. if i dont like it immediately i'd just
copy it from the radio station...

5. yes. i never used to like it, but we got some good
asparagus guacamole recently, and its awesome. and i
hate asparagus, which is blashpemy in my house (mom's
been obsessed with it forever, and please do not
ask...)

no - there is not enough nutrients in ramen
noodles to make some survive for a very extended
period of time.  of course, i couldn't do it
anyway since most of the flavors have some kind
of animal product in them, not to mention
chemicals i can barely pronounce.  however,
westbrae puts out a great selection of baked, not
fried ramen noodles for those willing to venture
into the temple known as a natural foods store
that has any merit.

3: if done right it could be cool. i've got some backstreet boys dubs 12"s
that really aren't bad. re-produced and re-mixed so it's mostly throbbing
groove bass lines, tight beats, and bsb samples in an almost amusing
fasion. and moby has torn up songs nicely in remixes in the past. of
course, the "what's going on?" remix doesn't bode well for the future
(we'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it was a rush-job).

Now that I think about it, it would be great to heard some really hard
shit, an entire album of MACHETE-like tracks would kick some royal arse.
I highly doubt that there will be many, if any at all, pop-star or guest
appearances.  At least none that are all too obvious.  As many have
pointed out, Moby's star status was never really that big.  Its also
further waned with the age and lack of play of PLAY.

For christ sake, Play is almost 3 years old now.  It got popular over a
YEAR after it was released.  I for one am looking forward to finally
seeing a new album.  I just hope that these ever increasing lulls in
productivity (read: major, full album releases), don't continue.  I'd like
to see fresh stuff on an annual basis.

well, i'll check for the mp3s on the day it comes out, since i'm such a big
fucking thief. it'll take me a few days to get the mo cd.  i'm really looking

i dont really think in terms of albums anymore, again, since i'm a big fucking
thief.  i'd have to see a list or something.  i did buy some albums in 2001 but
they werent released in 2001. of those, my favorite is probably watusi by the

Ok from the perspective of a cynical ex-journalist turned film producer/
biographer who lived in london too long and has been involved in the music

I would have said poppy, orchestral, soulful, acoustic but i'm sure the
effect of sept 11 will appear in his music so now i'd add angry. not
petulant like animal rights, but dark and angry, like we've never really
heard him. i kinda think it will be downtempo but not play 2 anymore.
knowing moby he'll probably shoot himself in the foot (commercially
speaking) and might even think that he did his record labels, publishers,
management(s) and the rest of the moby industry, enough favors the last time
round. ie thais will not be a licensing friendly record...
or then again he might just release that pop album he's threatened to have
already recorded.

the backlash will start in full effect. remember, the media were caught out
with play, this time they'll all want to interview him but won't all get the
time they need. this will fuel an editorial backlash, while all the people

indifference.

Angie Stone working with 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake and Moby

Angie Stone has recently been recording and touring with artists like
Alicia Keys, Will Smith, Maxwell, Moby, 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake
and Eve. While Stone was working on her second album "Mahogany Soul,"
she also recorded with Moby for his new album on a track titled "Jam
for the Ladies," together with MC Lyte and on a ballad. In return,

Sounds like "Honey ft. Kelis" part 2... Damn, there goes my last spark of
hope for Moby's next album. R&B and soul are really not my cup of tea. But
it could be expected, it's only style Moby hasn't really done yet, although
Play did come pretty close. So I guess my assumptions of Moby's new album
becoming "Play vol. 2" aren't false. Yes, my musical friends, we live in
musically dark times (as far as quality electronic music goes) and now one
of the very few artists I still buy new releases of is deciding to make
F*CKIN' R&B!  Now I understand how some people reacted on Animal Rights.

By the way, just as a formaility, does anybody know if there will be singles
preceiding the album?

I didn't mention selling out. It's just my growing fear that the album is
going to be not my musical taste. I'm really not a genre purist, I like his
old stuff, I like Animal Rights, I even think there are good moments on Play
:) I'm very curious about his new stuff, but I can't help being in my
"everything is wrong" life fase (just turned 21). You're right, time will
tell, but I wish time would go faster.

MOBY has titled his new album '18'.
As previously reported on NME.COM, Moby is set to release the follow-up to
his hugely successful album 'Play' in May 2002.

The first single taken from '18' is likely to be 'We Are Made of Stars',
NME.COM understands.

I wonder what's the story behind this album title... It would be kind of a
dull title if there wasn't a story attatched :)  I like the song title, it
could have been on Moon Safari by Air :)  Let's all try to find out what's
the story behind "18"!

- scenario 1:  18 is just the number of tracks on the album, in my opinion
the most likely scenario, dull, but effective.

I could go on with a lot of cynical scenarios about how 18 is the number of
tracks on the new album that sound exactly the same as Play, but I
won't.......

Let's be realistic here--how many albums has Moby put out that sound the
same?  When someone does EIW, which in ITSELF is a diverse collection, and
then goes on to do AR then PLAY, not to mention all his pre '95 stuff, I
don't think that Moby can be accused in the least of copying himself or
putting out something that sounds similar much less "exactly" as his
previous works.  Now simply look at PLAY: less than half the songs had the
unifying characteristic of sampling the "Sounds of the South" album, even
AMONG THESE songs, none of them sounded the same.  When you have such a
juxtoposition of songs like MACHETE, My weakness, and Guitar flute & string
on the same album, I don't see how anyone can claim that play has some sort
of idiosyncratic feature that could be defined, much less COPIED on his
upcoming album.

Finally, remember, as he's stated before, all of these tracks were at least
outlined before he even started touring for Play (does someone remember this
interview?  Link?), I doubt that it will sound EXACTLY or even SIMILAR to
Play, unless of course you are refering to Moby's usual diversity itself.

Moby performs at Winter Olympics 2002. He has composed a special piece of
music which is to be played at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, USA on
24th February. The composition will be played as the Olympic flame is
extinguished at the closing ceremony. Moby will then open and perform at the
concert for the althletes. Moby plans to release his new album, the follow
up to his eight million selling album 'Play', in 2002.

Thank you Chris. I don't get where the hell people are getting off
saying the new work will "sound like Play". Well what does Play sound
like? It's a diverse freaking CD, it's not like the whole CD has one
unifying sound or that it all sounds alike. It's funny how people's
judgment gets so skewed and the cynicism comes out just because "Play"
was so succesful.

thing is, i reckon all of moby's stuff sounds similar - its got typical moby
chord changes, key changes and basic structures. his melody lines, whether
on guitar or keyboard or strings, are all reminiscent of each other. this
isn't a problem, it's his style - the only thing that ever changes is how he
presents that style to the world.

And a lot of these new songs may date back to pre-play but then again he may
have gotten even more prolific and knocked out another few hundred tracks.

this is more intended for dj use than just
sitting around chilling, but i think it works for
that as well. jay denes puts together a series of
sexy house tunes with a host of vocalists,
including lisa shaw. my favorite song so far is
'close to home', with the lyrics 'if i
arrived/with a suitcase at your door/would you
throw your arms around me/would we make love on
the floor?'. if that doesn't get your motor
running, i don't know what will. a powerful first
album release from naked music. 7 out of 10.

* dan the automator - nathaniel merriweater
presents... lovage: music to make love to your
old lady by (75ark/tommy boy)
this album is quite a disappointment from dan's
work on deltron 3030, gorillaz, and handsome boy
modelling school. continuing on a great concept,
the future of handsome boy modelling school might
be in jeopardy. dan is trying to flex his stuff
and follow-up with the jazzy and sexy note we
remember from 'the truth' and 'sunshine' from
handsome boy modelling school, we see an album
that takes this concept, and uses way too many
annoying vocals to complement the standard, which
is to say expected, beats from dan.
unfortunately, this seems like more of the same
from the automator. 4 out of 10.

* v/a - recline: a six degrees collection of
chilled grooves (six degrees)
six degrees has the compilation thing down. over
the past ten years, they have released under one
label or another tons and tons of world beat and
fusion music. this particular compilation pulls
together original and remixed tracks from such
acts as dzihan and kamien, euphoria, and dj cam.
the result is a funked up version of your usual
chilled grooves. while it is a compilation, and
hard to judge on it, the tracks on this album are
tight and sexy, a great introduction to the beat
world of six degrees. 6 out of 10.

* trio mocoto - samba rock (ziriguiboom/six
degrees)
30 years ago, trio mocoto debuted with the
premier sound samba. the album, which took brazil
by storm and radiated up and out into the rest of
the countries, echoed a happy, laughing, vibrant
chord of music. after touring for a while, they
went into hiding. from this hiding, they were
dragged by ziriguiboom for their second album -
samba rock. samba rock combines rock, samba, and
jazz overtones together with an echo of hip-hop
to create a quite pleasurable, listening
experience for samba fans. i have found the
tracks to be quite uplifting, and make it easier
for me to get through slow days. for anyone that
is a fan of samba, this is a must have. now, if i
only knew porteguese.  5 out of 10.

Couldn't agree more. V. dull album with nothing fresh. Even though I loved
Deltron 3030 and Handsome Boy Modelling School, I have to admit I hated the
Gorillaz.
It shouldn't be forgotten that both Dan Automater and Prince Paul were
responsible for Tommy Boy's decision to sign some very dodgy rock and
drum'n'bass/ industrial bands a few years back. Despite their pedigree, they
are capable of showing extremely bad taste. As Lovage proves.

So, this is where we discover that Moby loves the album so much he's asked
Dan to mix his new stuff!!

Almost exactly the formula used for the SPAWN soundtrack, on which moby
was also featured.  The only difference is that they are using rap artists
rather than rock groups.  I think its funny that all the rap artists get
first mention in the by-lines, EXCEPT Paul Oakenfold.  He gets credit
before Ice Cube?!?!  I guess he is more mainstream than I thought.

ummm..i heard that moby figured out 18 new sex positions unknown in the
past..that is how he came up with the title..each song in the new album

My Next Is The E promo came in a plain black cardboard sleeve, center hole
cutout.. The only difference seems to be that the official release of NitE
is stickered. My guess is that they were all this way, as almost all of the
Instinct records I have are stickered cardboard. The only picture sleeve
from Instinct that I have is the Brotherhood.

actually, Eve will be working with the Chemical
Brothers.

uh.... i don't know how this is going to work out. i
really can not get into Mystikal. i really don't think
Moby could do a good rap song, honestly. but we'll

Cypress Hill & Roni Size could be interesting... as
long as Cypress stay away from guitars. they were way
better before they became another cheesy rap-metal
band. even tho they did do that stuff a long time ago,

Actually, it was your top 10 of 2001 (and 2000) that put me back a
little on the world map of (new) music. Allright, maybe too much credit,
but my interest received a new boost! I'm working my way back now a
little bit ... with a little help from AudioGalaxy (great Napster
replacement - highly recommended to everyone).

Recently (FINALLY according to many) I 'discovered' Goldfrapp ... can't
get those tunes out of my head (or the CD out of the player ...)

evidence' i won't discuss with them until they've

i think they removed the ghostware from
audiogalaxy.  anyway, i try to stay as far away
from major labels as i can, but i find my way to
liking some of the stuff that is released.  i
usually only stick to a few labels, but will try
anything once.

Cool.  No, I have not seen the film, but plan to when it gets to the
dollar theatre--In my experience hollywood usually fucks up the math when
it comes to movies.  Pi, goodwill hunting, etc...

And actually, I"m a computer science/mathematics double major, but I
graduate in May, guaranteed, so I say I already have a BS, no harm no

Did you see it on eBay? Then it's a (rather badly) self-made copy. Sound
quality is perfect, but the artwork is very badly scanned. I think that
there is/are one or two original "Play: The Outtakes" Cds around, but you
won't find them on eBay any more.  How I know all this? Long story, but it
includes that I got a copied version too thinking I was buying an
"original". At least I didn't spend the ammount at what they go for at eBay
on it, but IMO I spent too much for a copy. Be warned. The cd includes some
nice unreleased (instrumental) tunes though...

* luka bloom - between the mountain and the moon
(bar none records)
luka bloom's jump to an independent record label
was one of the best moves he's made.  his small
fan base has made him a wonderful icon in the
celtic, folk, and indie realms.  since jumping on
bar none, he has expanded his usual solo efforts
to include some regular vocals and new
instruments.  each track on this album is
delightfully different and presents a new side of
luka bloom.  female vocals provide backup and
stability, and rolling tracks like 'soshin' and
'bogman' remind you that this is in fact luka
bloom.  a wonderful release with a definitely
push towards expansion and creativity.  kudos,
luka!  9 out of 10.

* the chemical brothers - come with us
(astralwerks)
wow.  putting behind their experimental side of
'surrender', tom and ed return with a powerhouse
of a release.  three tracks are already hits with
the various crowds out there: it began in afrika,
galaxy bounce, and star guitar.  the rest of the
tracks are a flurry of genres, from electrofunk
to some idm-like beats to some dub/ambient.  with
guest appearances from beth orton and richard
ashcroft, both tracks of which were solid, the
album rounds out nicely.  regretably, the tease
of the idea of mixing all the song together
between it began in afrika and galaxy bounce
leave me with a wish to have seen them do it.
and while it is a solid album, it is nothing
extraordinarily new from the chems, just more of
what one would expect.  they also lose points for
allowing astralwerks to release a 'limited
edition' version of the cd.  7 out of 10.

* fog - pneumonia (ninja tune)
i've been trying to dig on this single for a
while, but i can only say it is straight up wack.
 i suppose it is good to see ninja tune willing
to experiment with some new ideas, but fusing
indie rock with hip-hop/turntablism/leftfield is
not well done here.  whiny flaming lips like
vocals drone over some minorly adjusted beats to
create a piece of noise i really didn't enjoy.
even coldcut's remix couldn't save it.  'moon
repellent', the b-side track, was only marginally
better, but still not something that is well
done.  try again, ninja tune.  2 out of 10.

* nine inch nails - and all that could have been
(nothing/interscope)
wow.  i never got a chance to attend a nine inch
nails concert, so this was quite a wake up call.
with a veritable greatest hits selection of songs
for the tour, delving into all his twists and
turns, trent reznor puts together a great album.
at least for a while.  while listening to both
discs in the deluxe edition, i actually had to
switch cds since two cds worth of nine inch nails
just grated on me.  there is very little
variation between the live version and the album
tracks, which while a good sign for trent, very
mediocre for the consumer.  however, nin fans
will see this as a must have and purchase it, so
it will not disappoint, but will not make one
stand up and take notice either.  5 out of 10.

* steve roach - streams and currents (projekt)
steve picked up where midnight moon left off in
1999 with the guitar he borrowed from roger king
in his bouts of insomnia during the making of
dust to dust.  it was a foreign object, but steve
has been teaching himself how to use and
incorporate this sound into his latest album.
recorded all live in the timeroom in tuscon, az,
he created lots of emptyspace ambient using
guitar and etheral movements.  this is not
steve's best work, far from it, but it is a solid
work of ambience.  the album is meant for a late
cold winter night, listening to it while thinking
about whatever comes to mind.  however, it's easy
to be distracted from the music.  roach fans will
love it, but this is definitely not an album for
the unitiated.  6 out of 10.

* thievery corporation - sounds from the verve
hi-fi (verve)
most fans of thievery corporation will be very
disappointed with this release.  true fans will
delight in seeing some very significant
influences into their music presented here from
the verve label.  eric and rob were asked to put
together a compilation of their favorite tunes
from the verve label (you might remember a
similar move by dj cam on his 'honeymoon' release
last year).  there is no mixing, but this albums
provides you with two essential elements: (1) a
look at what has inspired the new sound of
thievery corporation and (2) a wonderful
introduction to the verve label.  there is very
little electronic on this release, but it is a
nice compilation album.  5 out of 10.
