I just want to pass on a few names at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre:
Jason Woehrle
Public Relations Manager
312.595.5633
jwoehrle@chicagoshakes.com
Julie Stanton
Marketing Associate
(312) 595-5634
jstanton@chicagoshakes.com
Deborah Brosseau is no longer there. For contact with Chicago Shakes:
Alida Szabo
Director of Audience Development
312.595.5631
aszabo@chicagoshakes.com
Now a question --
Does anyone have any deals with local restaurants? I have been approached by
one, but they don't want to give us much, and I am out of ideas about how to
engage them. Any ideas would be hugely appreciated.

Regarding restaurant promotions, I think there are many opportunities for
cooperative marketing deals without "giving away the house" and helping them
get people in the door and taking advantage of what they can offer. I have a
relationship with a neighbor restaurant wherein they host our season
announcement pre-show party (all the mucky mucks eat and drink for free,
about 300 of them), they have set up house accounts for our marketing/pr
staff to entertain guests, media, whatever. We also have POP cards on the
table that list our season and also occasionally have post-show discussion
questions for people who go there immediately after the shows. We also have
a Portland Center Stage special reservation line that our big donors can
call and reserve a table since the place is usually slammed during
pre-theatre hours. We give them exposure, ads in our programs but overall I
think we get the best out of the deal. There are also the intangible
benefits of having really great service whenever I go there because we're
considered VIP's...
We have a couple other restaurants that we have company discounts at and we
exchange ads and we make sure the staff gets comps to previews (I think this
is key) and we make sure they always have our brochures available.
Whew. There's more, but that's the gist...

Here is something that we are in the process of creating. I am not sure if
it is a creative idea or not, but it is a great way to engage the
restaurant to promoting the theater, and not just giving us the opportunity
to offer 10% off one entree!
People that move from job to job or get a promotion, etc. are listed each
week in the local Business Journal or business section of the
newspaper. They provide the name and the company they work at right there
in the article. The restaurant and theater then coordinate a letter to the
individual of congratulations, or welcome to the area, or something and
offer a bottle of wine with dinner and two tickets, dinner for four and
discounts on tickets, or whatever.
One thing I have learned is that the restaurants have a hard enough time
keeping track of their own staff much less keeping track of who their
customer is, so it would be wise to do the research on weekly basis
yourself, but have the restaurant do the mailings and fulfillment.
Also, ever notice how restaurants around your theater don't keep a mailing
list? Get them to do it for their and your benefit. And since non-profit
bulk mail permits don't allow us to but their restaurant logo on direct
mail pieces, have the restaurant pay for the first class balance and you
can put anything on it, i.e. "eat at Ed's before the show" or an offer and
the mailing will get to your patrons hands faster.
Just some thoughts...
