Meredith Ryan Packer, a 13 year old Beehive in the Ashford Ward of
Connecticut, is the only LDS Young Woman to Debut in New York's Carnegie
Hall.  She performed her solo recital there on March 15, 1997 in
conjunction with the release of her newest ablum, "Love One Another."
Her album can be purchased from Deseret Bookstores, Strawberries Music,

The positively lovely young face of thirteen year old Meredith Ryan
Packer gazes out at me pensively from the cover of her CD 'Love One
Another', an enigmatic Mona Lisa-like smile barely curving her lips,
suggesting a mischievous innocence.

Meredith is promoted as a gifted lyric soprano with a four octave range.
Make no mistake, this young lady does have a gift.

Ms. Packer possesses a sweet, light voice which she puts to good use on
this compilation of inspirational songs chosen to show off her vocal
abilities. This is readily apparent on the first song, "Love One
Another", a composition by Luacine Clark Fox, which impressed me the
first time I heard it. Ms. Packer's voice came out clear and strong,
with clean natural vibrato, sound resonance, and a good sense of
emotion. As "Love One Another" ended, and the second song began, I knew
I was in for a treat. "Please Lift Me Up" was written by Ken La Roche
expressly for Ms. Packer, and she approaches this song with confidence
and ability. She sends clear signals of longing which seep through her
voice and touch the listener as she laments,

"We've all been waiting for heaven, and heaven's been waiting for none.
Oh why do we wait for heaven if heaven on earth is now?"

Ms. Packer reminds me a great deal of the high caliber young Broadway
singers -- along the lines of the myriad ``Annie'' stars. Unlike the
Annie clones, however, Ms. Packer does not force her vocalizations upon
you -- her singing is gentler, sweeter.

For all of her ability and promise, Ms. Packer's voice is still that of
a young girl. She has been compared favorably with Country/Western
sensation LeAnn Rimes, but I appreciated how much Meredith sounded like
her age, as compared to LeAnn, who sounds too overproduced. If I were to
hear LeAnn singing in a more intimate setting I would be able to draw a
more decent comparison between the two. I applaud her producers
insistence that she come across as who she was, not as a mature, fuller
voiced artist.

If Ms. Packer has any room for improvement, it shows up when she ascends
the scale. As she reaches above the high C, Ms. Packer's voice thins out
and seems to lose support. Her vibrato is slower up there, and her pitch
wavers just a hair.

If Ms. Packer's vocal coach, Dean FH Macy (who kindly sent me the CD at
my request) were to make the mistake of asking me for my advice, I would
suggest that Ms. Packer stay away from public performance of songs that
require her to stay for any length of time in the higher registers, from
high C# on up. stick to a repertoire that allows her to only touch those
notes from time to time. Ms. Packer's strengths lie in her middle and
lower notes, which she imbues with a richness and grace beyond compare.

Mr. Macy has a winner with Meredith Ryan Packer. In my very humble and
unschooled opinion, he should continue the excellent work he is doing
with her, and take very good care of her.

I would award Ms. Packer's CD 3 out of a possible 4 Megafudge
Double-rich Chocolate Ripple Fantasy Brownies.

There has most certainly been traffic in the last year.

But this is a quiet list not given to massive amounts of distracting
postings.


When something really good comes along it gets posted and all of us take

I'm not familiar with Kevin Sharp. I do know there are other LDS stars.
Osmonds are the first thing that come to mind. Other Celebrities that
come to mind are Lynda Day Geroge, The King Family, Johnnie Whitaker
(From Family Affair), Jay North (from Dennis the Menace) Gordon Jump
(WKRP). Who else are LDS members.

Anyone know if there is a mail list for the PAF (Personal Ancestral File)
program. That should generate a lot mof mail, especially the new version
3.0.

Meredith Ryan Packer "One Christmas Eve"
(Eleven Year Old Lyric Soprano)

"One Christmas Eve", a musical designed to tug your heartstrings and
showcase the talents of then-eleven-year old Meredith Ryan Packer,
manages to accomplish its goals.  Written by Dean FH Macy, this gentle
tale tells the story of a young girl who is facing her first Christmas
Eve without her mother, who died in an automobile accident that also
took her infant sister.

The girl is played by young Ms. Packer.  The synopsis of the story has
the girl unable to sleep on Christmas Eve, and so she joins her father
(played by Dean Macy) where he broods by the fire.  The talk of their
missing mother, and how "Mommy" would have helped them to celebrate
Christmas.  In this way, and through time honored Christmas hymns and
carols, the two relive the Christmas story.  They bring Mommy closer to
their hearts as well, and both are enlivened by the feeling of oneness
they share with each other, with the gentle spirit of the mother, and
with God.

Mr. Macy's story is indeed a heart-tugging story.  He placed all the
right elements into it to guarantee a rapport with the audience. His use
of scenes in a series of Christmas cards on the mantle as a way to
introduce each song is ingenious. =20

I have had the opportunity to hear the now 13 year old Ms. Packer on her
latest CD, and so was able to compare the budding talents of the younger
version to her more polished older self. In addition, I was able to
assess some of Ms. Packer's acting skills, at least insofar as line
delivery is concerned (this was an audio tape, so I could only evaluate
her spoken lines, not her stage presence nor her facial and body
language).  When I first heard Ms. Packer's CD, I thought to myself that
this was a young lady who should be groomed for the stage.  My only
concern was, could she act?  Indications from "One Christmas Eve" tell
me that, yes, this young woman can act.  Her vocal characteristics,
still very youthful and even more so in this play speak plainly of a
person who should be prepared for the stage.

The flaws in her young voice are obviously being trained out.  It is
clear that she is well on her way toward vocal perfection.

Again, I really enjoy the emotion that Ms. Packer displays with her
singing. I confess that, by the time I finished listening to the tape,
I was reaching for handkerchief after handkerchief.  And not all of it
had to do with the sob-quality of the carefully crafted story, either.

Try Brian Keith, Jack Albertson, Meredith Ryan Packer (To Kill A Mocking
Bird), Sebastian Cabot (A Family Affair) and the two kids in the show,
Orson Scott Card, Samantha Leigh, Ray Radin, and James Rebhorn
(Independance Day).  There are others.  I'll post when I think of them.
However I think as LDS, we are all stars.

A viable alternative to conventional printed publishing is to publish them
on the internet.
There are many books that are available Only via the net where the author
has posted them for the world to read and asks for a $5 "Contribution" from
those people that truely enjoyed reading the book. Granted, most times
people will not pay you for what they hav read, nevertheless, if you have
already written it and cannot get it printed commercially, you have nothing
to loose and everything to gain from the added exsposure.

Hello KD:

I run a software corporation selling to the SCUBA industry.

As such we do a significant portion of our buniness on the Internet worldwide.

After much hand wringing we decided to publish our entire software manual
online to allow potential customers a better opportunity to look at our
software.

Clearly this also meant that our competitors would now have access to an
electronic copy of our manual, something that could potentially be very
advantagious to them.

In the end it proved to be to our Clear benefit and our fears were, for the
most part, unfounded.

This was a couple of years ago. Since then I have seen more and more
writters publishing there books / stories on-line. If i were you, and you
had already tried and failed at the conventional publishing route, then i
would strongly encourage you to put your material out in the public domain.
The copywrite issue is not as bad as it might appear. Once you publish it
on the internet, with the needed copyright notice on all of the text, you
will have established a clear public copyright by having released the text
to the public. Woe be unto you, if someone got hold of your work first and
got it out to the world before you did. Nevertheless, many Asian countries
are no respector of copyrights, heaven knows when it comes to software they
will copy and resell anything and everything they can get their hands on....

Another alternative is for you to only release the first 50% of the book to
the public and then charge a few dollars to tell people where the 2nd half
of the text is located. Certainly an old sales method, but effective
nevertheless. If I were you I would take one (1) of your better works and
make the entire contents available to the public. Publish it, promote it,
and see what kind of responce you get after say 6 months. Based on that
feedback make a decission as to whether or not to put the rest of your
works online. That reduces your initial exsposure, while giving you a good
feeling for what people in the real world think of your writtings.

Thank you, Christopher, for your encouragement.  Some would say that I am
impatient, while others would advise I have made an art-form of that
particular shortcoming.  I have been writing for a terribly long time ...
2 years ... or so it seems.  A few pieces have been read by what I
believed to have been "open, honest, and critical thinkers (in the
literary sense).  Just about all reviews have been on the heavier end of
the scale, not-so-hot on the light end.  So I apparently jumpted to a
conclusion that others were just waiting for the story(ies) to arrive.

So what makes our house run in Crockett, Texas?  Church, high school,
elementary school, and Sam Houston State University (my home away from
home...2 sems. shy of a secondary teaching degree in English/Political
Science), goats, emu, market hogs, 4-H, athletics (of course), the "oil
patch" and the U.S. Air Force (daughter headed to Italy for 2 years).  I
do believe it is possible to be in such a whirl wind that patience
becomes difficult to find within.

I will save your recommendations and if I am still buried under
rejections, I do believe I shall give it a try out.  Thank you very much.

I am a new web-surfer and am intrigued by this site.  Please add me to
your subscription list.  I am also a freelance designer for both theatre
and film here in Happy Valley and have been involved for the past year
with a project entitled "The Trail of Dreams" which is a bold, new
musical recounting the Mormon Pioneer experience.

Written by Marvin Payne, James Arrington and Steven Kapp Perry, "The
Trail of Dreams" has enjoyed a successful run, or series of runs, at
Utah Valley State College and at the Valentine Theatre in American Fork.
It also preformed to sold out audiences at Women's Week in the De Jong
Concert Hall at BYU, where it is expected to do equally well this week
forthcoming during Educatiuon Week.

This fall, "Trail" is scheduled to continue touching people's lives as
it returns to the Valentine Theatre for an extended run from September
18 thru November 22.  There, Marvin Payne will continue portraying John
Brown, an 1847 Vanguard Company member, and captain of many other later
pioneer companies.  Brown was also Payne's great-great grandfather.

The Valentine Theatre is located on the campus of the Utah State
Developmental Center in American Fork, directly across the street from
the Mt. Timpanogos Temple.  Showtimes are Monday, Thursday, Friday and
Saturday at 7:30 p.m..  Ticket information is available by calling our
hotline: [phone].  Patrons are encouraged to order tickets early
as all shows are expected to sell out quickly.
