Hi everyone,
    I saw Patch Adams yesterday and thought that I would share a few thoughts on
it.  For information on the movie your can look up www.patchadams.com and
www.imdb.com
    I felt that the rating was appropriate for the movie and if you are planning on
taking anyone to see it who is 13 or younger.  I suggest, maybe waiting.  The
movie does contain some pretty crude humor and some nudity, something that is
not the greatest for anyone to see.  Obviously, the film does not perfectly live
up with church standards, but the it has several themes that I think anyone who
believes in a Supreme Being (see the First Missionary Discussion) : ) will be
able to connect with.  One scene in particular involves a Butterfly and Patch.
    If you are going to and want to see a Robin Williams impromptu slapstick
comedy, you may be disappointed.  Although there are some pretty good gags and a
lot of really funny jokes, the show does take on a very serious tone and, in my
opinion, does a great job.  Robin Williams was the perfect choice for the role.
Even though he seems much too old to be a Medical Student, I don't think that
anyone else could have taken on this role and done as well as he has.  Robin
Williams movies happen to be some of my favorites.
    My wife, who is a Nurse, thinks that all Medical Students should see the film.
If you have ever been a patient (which I am sure that most of us have been at
one point or another) you will probably be able to connect with some of the
patients.
    One suggestion while watching the film.  Take along a cushion to sit on if the
theatre that you see it at is any older than about two years.  I saw it in an
older theatre and without enough leg room and seats that felt like they were
from the Flinstones, I was getting a little restless. It gets a little long and
some scenes seem to drag, but it is worth seeing.
    One other suggestion, if you are prone to crying take along a box of tissues.
In one scene, Robin Williams delivers a (IMO) a beautifully acted and scripted
scene that can bring you to tears.  For those of you wanting to know which scene
it is, watch for the one where he wears a suit coat.
    Aside from a shot in the rear end of one patient and a Graduation Gown gag,
there is not much nudity in the movie but there is enough to make people turn
their heads a little.  There is not nearly as much as was in Titanic, but if you
saw City of Angels and that didn't embarass you, then you should be safe.
    Overall I really liked the movie, and once it makes it to video it will find
its way to my collection.  Anyone else who would like to comment on the movie

Hi.  I saw You've got mail - the new Tom Hanks / Meg Ryan movie.  I went
with my best friend, and we both thought it was "pretty okay."
To be honest, it seemed long, even though it was only about two hours.
Some parts were pretty draggy, but it made up for it.  The whole movie
sets up a nice, slow pace, and then the last twenty minuites or so jumped
into high gear and the last five minuites were so good I felt all warm
and fuzzy inside.

Meg Ryan is starting to look a little matronly, but she sure hasn't lost
her spark!  I wonder about the believability of the general plot, but as
romantic comedies go , it's a pretty good one.

I don't recall any real language or nudity, although at the beginning
both of the main characters are living with someone but not married.
This ends though, and any movie complete with a mushy scene in a garden
is good enough for me.  I recommend it for a mid week date perhaps, or a
mid day show.

It was better than "Sleepless in Seattle" because they do more than meet
this time (!) but I believe we have not yet seen the last of this pair.
I think they are great together.

Oh, and it took a little while to get going.  I was dissapointed at how
the fact that he put her out of business just got swept under the rug and
didn't matter anymore once the movie was half way over, but like I said,
I reccomend it.  It was pretty good.  Especially for romantics like me.
I left the theater saying "That's something I want to have" (or maybe
"that's something I have" or whatever is appropriate for your situation.)

Re "Bug's Life": Maybe I'll have to keep a more open mind about this
animated movie, based on Karin's strong recommendation. Also, on "Antz"

Re "Patch": Based on your strong recommendation and also those of others
whose opinions I trust, this is on "must see" list. I understand I should
bring some Kleenex with me.  I also like Robin Williams. I enjoyed him in
"What Dreams May Come" even though I apparently missed the point and
meaning of that movie. That was not a comedy, fortunately. I dislike
"Slapstick" comedy. A clever play on words is the kind of comedy I like
most, that appeals to an adult intelligent mature mind. Really too bad
about Robin Williams' illness. The world will miss his talent.

Re "You've Got Mail: I've heard from several sources that this one is
very good--Good scenes in NYC, cute dialog. Of course, those of us
"online" with e-mail are also particularly interested in the subject.

Re "Stepmom": Haven't seen this one either, but I've heard from a couple
of sources that it is good.

Re Other recent releases: Seems there are several interesting looking
ones coming out now with PG ratings. Don't know if the movie industry
rating standards have been changed so that more films that would have
formerly been rated R for just 1 or 2 "offensive" words or scenes, have
been rated PG to attract a wider viewership. I wouldn't trust the movie
industry's ratings unless, with individual films, the rating is validated
by source(s) I trust like yours, people at church, etc.

I have received messages from Karin Gilbert via your LDS Movie List. I
guess you must have forwarded her message to everyone on your list so
far. Is she the only one who has given you input or is she one of your
Committee?

I have never made any input to any of the other mail lists I am on, but I
may to your movie list. It looks like fun, especially if occasionally I
see my words "in print" and feel as though someone out there may be
interested in what I think and have to say. Maybe just so much
pontificating from the safety of my high ivory tower, and not much in way
of reviewing movies, since we seldom go to movies or even rent them.

Other than good full-length features like the above, my favorite TV
shows include(d): "Hiway to Heaven", "Little House" anything by or with
Michael Landon (unfortunately, no relation), "Touched By An Angel",
"Promised Land", most everything with or by Gerald McRainey, Roma
Downing, Della Reese, etc. and/or produced by M Williamson.
I also enjoy "7th Heaven", though sometimes it is a bit "sappy" and
borders on the "dumb adult, smart kids" theme.

Re R-Rated Movies: I think these need to be individually considered and
reviewed, rather than trusting the movie industry ratings to be any where
near accurate. I think these ratings are often contrived. Certainly if
the violence, nudity, etc is germane & integral to the story, especially
a historical story, the movie should be PG-13 rather than R-Rated like
"Schindler's List", "Private Ryan", "Amistad", etc. It is the
"unnecessary" extraneous or excessive insertion of violence, gore, bad
language, nudity, sex, etc I personally object to.

Uh, I'm not on any committees...just a teenage movie-buff that loves to
share opinions w/ others.  I haven't posted many times on my other
mailing lists either, like Cougar-net (I feel left out b/c I'm not in
Provo and we don't get to see many BYU games on TV in Delaware).  But
this is a list I can knowledgably contribute to, b/c anyone can go to the
movies and buy a ticket for Patch Adams or A Bug's Life, or even go to
Blockbuster and rent a good recent release (or do what I do and rent old
corny '80's movies your mom always told you not to watch).
Just to let everyone in on my opinion of "You've Got Mail"...I refuse to
see it.  I haven't seen "Sleepless in Seattle" either.  I don't want to!!
 I lived it, and it didn't have that happy ending where the guy gets the
girl and whatnot.  As much of a sap as I am when it comes to happy
endings (I cry when I watch Beauty and the Beast and I watch It's a
Wonderful Life in July just so I can get that warm-fuzzy feeling and have
a good cry at the end), the thought of seeing my life on screen
ultimately scares me!!
  Not to offend anyone by bringing up the dreaded "R" rating, but has
anyone heard any good/bad/indifferent reviews of "Elizabeth"?  It sounds
like a good movie, but commercials can be so deceiving!!  We covered the
history of the Elizabethan era in my AP history class and I thought the
movie might "bring it to life."  I'm also pretty tempted to see
Shakespeare in Love, but I have a sneaky feeling it's more about sex than
Shakespeare's writings and oppression of women.
  Oh, well...that's enough from me for now =)

Actually, it is Michael J. Fox that announced that he has Parkinsons.  I did do
some research on Robin Williams, though.  One web site that I found (I don't
know how credible the site is) said that Robin Williams is Bi-Polar.  So you
were correct in that he is "sick" it is just not something that will keep him
from entertaining us.  Thanks for keeping us on our toes though.

If you look on www.imdb.com they have listings of movies that people are
starring in or have starred in.  If you have not already, you should check it

Does anyone have some good information (other than trailers) on At First Sight
and She's All That?  I have only seen the trailers for it tonight and am
wondering what people are thinking of it or if you have seen a sneak preview of

It seems to me that it is simply a cycle, a long string of R rated movies that I
typically have no interest in and then all at once quite a few come out that I
really want to see.

Another movie that I saw is coming out is "Baby Geniuses" (PG), starring
Christopher Lloyd, Kathleen Turner, Randy Travis and Dom Deluise.  It looks like
a cute story, but it almost sounds a bit like the "Look Who's Talking" movies
(which I can't stand)  Has anyone heard or seen anything about this movie.  It
is supposed to be out Jan 29, but I have not seen anything on it, of course I
watch maybe two hours of T.V. a week, so I don't see many commercials.

For information sake, I get most of my information from the Internet Movie
DataBase (www.imdb.com) if any of you have some other really good sources,
please let me know.

I still don't have to www site up and running, but I hope to real soon.  Thanks
